hi ive just bought an iphone from my friend not sure if its a 4 or 4s However when i put my new sim into the fone its just saying searching ..ive been told as it was an ex contract fone that i need to restore back to its factory settings but how do i do this ?

If you synch your phone to your computer via itunes,it performs a backup prior to synching. You can check by luanching itunes select preferences>devices,all backups should be shown there. If in fact there is a backup of your phone listed then do a restore of that back up.

It's weird that you have to restore from backup, and then choose to start as a new phone. But I didn't lose ANYTHING when I did it that way! Thank goodness!

Oh, and by the way... sync your phone everytime you add ANYTHING.. I did a restoral which DOES wipe everything clean.. but after it was all done.. even my contacts were still there.. not the ones I added since the previous sync, but all that where there before my previous sync were there!

There should be no problems other than the inconvenience of having to restore your iPhone to factory settings.
Except for one factor - contacts, calendar, notes, photos in the camera roll. You need to copy all of these to your computer or you will lose them. The easiest way is to sync these with apps on your computer such as MS Outlook or iCal and Address Book on a Mac. Photos are copied the same way you would with any digital camera.
The alternative is a 3rd party app that can copy files from an iPhone to your computer. iOS Data Recovery software is probably the best. It is not free, but has gotten positive reviews.

That does happen. It depends on how hard the server is being hit, as well as the connection speed of your system. If you are on a windows system, you will want to disable any antivirus or firewall software during the download.
