Restore Autorecovery Excel file

Hello,
Can't figure out where autorecovery excel files are stored, provided that the autosave box is checked.
Cheers,

Hi, I have a very similar problem.
After working extensively on a file for over 3h, MS Excel for mac crashed.  Thankfully I had auto-save turned on, and my file was saved as ...(version 1).xlsx.  However, I cannot find this file anywhere, and searches with data recovery programs did not find anything.
Accepting that I had to start from the beginning, I began over again and MS Excel for mac crashed again.  I went to save this auto-recovery file which happened to be of the same name, and it asked if I wanted to overwrite the existing file (the complete one that had been auto-saved previously).  I can see the file in the folder in the save window, however searches of my computer in Spotlight don't turn anything up, and when I go to the MS Office Autorecovery folder as listed in the save window, no files are present.  Why cannot I not see these files, and where did my file from the other day go?  It is very frustrating as I believe the complete finished product file is on my computer somewhere, but as I cannot find it I feel I am being forced to start over.
Has anyone had this problem, or is anyone able to help?  It would be much appreciated, thanks,
HRockefeller

I safed a excel file with the same name of an already existing file.
Can I, and if so how, retrieve this original file?

FYI, Office for Mac does not support Versions,  backup is the only likely route to recovery here.

Follow these instructions to uninstall MacKeeper. They have been tested with the most recent version of MacKeeper (v 2.8). Earlier versions than the one released in 2012 require more extensive work to uninstall all its components.
The effects of having actually used MacKeeper to do anything are a completely different matter. The fastest way to take an exquisitely designed and painstakingly engineered Mac and make it run like a steaming pile of dung is to install and use such ill-conceived "cleaning" or "security" products. This is just one example of a broad category of time- and money-wasters capable of causing damage that can only be rectified by reinstalling OS X, restoring from a backup, or completely erasing your system and rebuilding it from the ground up. Never install such junk on a Mac.
If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.
Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.
You will be asked to authenticate (twice):
You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it:
Just click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.
After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash and restart your Mac. All that will remain is an inert log file that does nothing but occupy space on your hard disk.

  • Can no longer open Excel files.

Whenever I try to open an Excel file, I get the message "The file name or path name no longer exists or the file that you are trying to open is the same as another that is read only."
This is the same for all .xls files. I even get it if I try to create a new workbook. I have the files backed up on my iDisk, with iBackup, but restore fails. I can open them with Appleworks. I think that I may have lost a link between user/documents somehow. Can anyone please help?

Generally if this happens the thing I have found to do is to quit the application and then restart the application by clicking on one of the files (like the ones in your documnets folder), not by starting the application and using the open command. Doing this immediately will usually solve the problem.
This could also be an indication of some sort of file or disk corruption so I would recommend that you not only check the disk using Disk Utility from the CD but also checking your disk permissions just to be sure. Instructions for doing so can be found in steps one and two here: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/repairprocess.html
If the first two steps don't solve the problem then you might as well go to step three, otherwise stop with one and two.
If you have backups and cannot get the files to open then your only other choice will be to restore from the backup copies. Either way I would make sure that my disk was healthy, by following the above noted steps, before doing the restore, otherwise you may corrupt the restored copy.
Good Luck and let us know if this helps!!

  • Excel Files become "Broken" and cannot be opened

    Our environment is as follows:
SharePoint 2013 server, web application running in 2010 mode.  Our users are primarily on thin clients in a 64-bit Citrix environment running Office 2013 applications.  We use a redirected desktop/my documents on a network drive so that users will
have their documents and settings on any computer they log into.
The issue we've run into is that sometimes one of the Excel files becomes "broken" and will no longer open.  This seems to be related to when a user has the file open for long periods of time and loses connectivity or if the user's Excel /
session crashes.  When the file becomes broken, the symptoms are:
Open document from SharePoint and Excel splash screen reads:
    1.  Starting...
    2.  Contacting the Server For Information.  (This message lasts ~2 min)
Then an error message in Excel states:
"Microsoft Excel is waiting for another application to complete an OLE action."
    OK
    "Could not open 'https://sharepointurl/site/subsite/documentlibrary/document name.xlsx'."
    OK
Microsoft Excel cannot access the file
'SameFilePathAsAbove'.  There are several possible reasons:
The file name or path does not exist.
The file is being used by another program.
The workbook you are trying to save has the same name as a currently open workbook.
    OK
    Empty workbook
We've had problems determining "who" broke it, but the result is the same - nobody is able to open it, whether using Excel2013, Excel2010, or the Excel Services thru the SharePoint "view in browser" option.
Our terminal servers reboot nightly, we've tried rebooting the 2 SharePoint application servers and the SharePoint SQL server to no avail.  It seems like the file is stuck waiting for itself.  In some cases, we've found that older versions of the
file can be restored (generally a few versions back) but when versioning is not enabled then that possibility is out.
We cannot seem to resolve where the issue lies at it's core or how to resolve it.  This happens much more frequently for the documents that users keep open for long periods of time making modifications to them, but we suspect that's because they are
just more likely to have a SharePoint document open if their computer or Excel client crashes.

They don't want us (the dealers) to edit the spreadsheet, but they do want us to read it. It's their pricelist, they wouldn't sell a lot of equipment if we couldn't see how much it costs! The point is that Numbers won't even open a spreadsheet that is edit protected, not read protected. This is a major issue, it should at the very least tell me I can open or import the sheet as a read only.
Excel will always open the spreadsheet, it just can't make changes to it.
For right now, when I need to get information from the pricelist in Excel, I have to copy and paste the info from the edit protected page to another blank sheet. This is a royal PITA because the Excel pricelist has 50 plus pages. I have been officially told to do that by my manufacturer. But they won't give anyone the password to unprotect the edit function of the sheet. Go figure.

  • How to restore/retrieve my files from external HD backed up by Time Machine

I'm recently a victim of car theft and my MacBook Pro, iPad 2 and external hard drive was stolen from the car. A friend of mine is lending me his MacBook Air to temporary use until I get a new MBP. I use Time Machine and Time Capsule to do frequent back up of all my files. I am attempting to restore my files on this MacBook Air, but I need assistance in trying to retrieve files/information from the external hard drive that I have attached to my MacBook Pro. My previous research on Time Machine/Time Capsule is that it will also back up external hard drive as long as they are attached/mounted to my MacBook Pro during back-ups.
How do I restore/retrieve the files or folders from my external hard drive using Migration Assistant. Do I need to get another external hard drive? Should I get the same exact brand and type of external hard drive?
I hope that someone can help me with this? Like most of us, my entire life's work in on my computer and hard drive. I need to be able to retrieve this valuable information.
Thank you everyone for taking the time to help m

Sorry you had such an experience.. not the first I have heard..
Having your entire life on the laptop is a concern!!
The pondini knowledgebase will give you an excellent starting point. as recovery is not necessarily simple in this scenario.. as the external drive might or might not have been backed up depending on the settings..
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
    Look at Q14-20
Particularly 16 to restore to alternative location.
You will probably need another disk, just because the disk in the air is small. It does not have to be the same size or model.. just get one big enough to restore everything.

  • Had an Excel file in the dock. When I restarted  computer a question mark appeared in the dock. I can't find the file. Where can I find what was in the dock on my Time Capsule

I had an Excel file icon in my Dock on the compter. When I restarted my computer a Question mark appeared where the file icon was located in the dock. I need to find that file. I can't locate it either on my computer or on the Time Capsule . Anyone have any thoughts where the actual file may be located?

    Sorry, you lost me.
If the file is on your computer, then you will find it if you open Excel, click the File menu, and click Open Recent.
If you deleted the file before Time Machine saved it, it is gone.
If the file was on your computer long enough for Time Machine to save it, it will be in your Time Machine backups.
Open up Time Machine, wait a few minutes for it to load, and click on All Files on the left side of the window.
Then scan to select a purple bar over on the right hand side of the window to select a recent date when you know that the document was on your Mac.
If the document was saved, then you will see it in there somewhere. Click on the file to highlight, then click Restore to bring it back to the present time.

I am using a 27" iMac with Mac OS 10.8.2. I copied an Excel file to my 13" MacBook and it opened fine. I have since turned off Time Machine but still cannot open any Excel files on my 27" iMac.
    Can you help?

I realize this is an older thread but I just ran into this issue with a restore from Time Machine backup on a clean install Mac OS X 10.9.
It seems that the issue has nothing whatsoever to do with the file in question or the permissions or the ownership of that file and everything to do with hidden files. If Excel saved a temporary file then you will not be able to edit the file until you delete the temp file - which is hidden.
So what you want to do is the following:
Open a Terminal Session and paste in:          defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool YES
    The paste in:       killall Finder
Go to the folder where the offending file is and find the copy of that file that is prefixed with ~$ and delete it
Then past in:      defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool NO
    The paste in:       killall Finder
or you could leave hidden files visible for a time until you clean up everything - then turn em off when you get cleaned up.

  • Migrated files to new MBPro w/Mountain Lion, Excel Files won't save

Just received my new MB Pro and migrated files from my 5 y/o MB Pro to the new machine using Migration Assistant.  Now, none of my Excel files on the new machine can be updated and saved.  Help!!
    Thanks,

    Hi
I have a problem along similar lines. MBP 2007 new logic board fitted. Restored files from Time Machine. iPhoto messed up - still to fix but appears to be something to do with permissions. Now to your problem, and mine, with Excel. I originally found one file opening as Read Only. Checked all the permissions, etc, as you have done. Initially thought it was only one file as others opened OK. I have now found another one with the same problem. I found that by changing the name of the file in the Finder i.e. adding a "1" to the name, the files would open OK. In looking through the Microsoft site I found one similar problem and one suggestion was to copy (I just dragged them) the files to the Desktop and see if they would open. Answer, yes they do. The theory is that there is a sharing problem. I have checked these two files and enclosing folders. Nothing is locked and nothing is, or ever has been, shared. All the permissions appear to be correct and I am signed in as Administrator. That is as far as I have got at the moment. You might like to see if your file(s) will open from the Desktop - just double click them.
Not sure where to go next but at least I can now use the files.
    TY

  • Problem repairing excel file in office 2010

    Hello,
I have a problem with one of my excel file, I was working on file in excel and computer suddenly restarted due to electricity fluctuation. After computer restarted, I try to open the file but it gives error.

I try to repair the file using repair tool of Excel 2010 but it is useless.  I also tried different software to recover corrupted excel file but all useless.
Does anyone has solution to make my file useful.

  • Corrupt Excel files in Windows 7

i use excel 2007 . most of excel files open ok . Some of them (.xls) , produced by some sql software, wont open in windows 7 . I tried everything , from compatibility modes , remove antivirus software , etc. the system says that file wont open and that is corrupted , trying to restore it nothing happens . Though in other windows versions these files works ok.

    Hi,
What version of Excel were they using?
Have you tried opening it up in the latest version on Excel?
I had it in the past where says a 2003 file wouldn't open but opening it in 2007/2010/2013 it would repair it & open it ok.
Then I just saved the file to a new location.
Have you tried Open Office? might be worth a try just in case?
    Also try

  • How to recover Excel file if not saved?

The situation is - an accountant in an Excel file deleted data and save the changes. Tell me how to restore the old data? And in general it possible?

I agree with your viewpoint as Excel autosave is limited to 3-10 minutes and generally it is hard to restore the old data via this method. But i do not agree with that you say it is no way to get the old data because a professional office excel recovery
tool can help get the previous excel easily. Take a random example http://drm-assistant.com/datarescue/restore-overwritten-word-excel-powerpoint-file.html

  • All excel files keep opening when I open excel?

Dealing With The Resume Feature of Lion
Managing Mac OS X Lion's application resume feature.
If you shutdown your computer you should get a dialog asking if you want applications to resume on the next startup. Simply uncheck the box to prevent that from occurring. Open General preferences and uncheck the option to Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps. You can also install a third-party utility to control resume features on individual applications: RestoreMeNot or Application State Cleaner.
It is possible to completely stop the Resume feature although I'm unconvinced that it is that annoying. Nevertheless see the following:
If you have not yet done so you must first make your /Home/Library/ folder visible. Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. At the prompt paste the following command line:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press RETURN. Quit the Terminal application.
In the Finder navigate to the /Home/Library/Saved Application State/ folder. Delete the contents of the folder. Back up to the /Home/Library/ folder. Select the Saved Application State folder. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Sharing and Permissions panel at the bottom click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window.
Quit all open programs except the Finder (this is very important.) Next, navigate to the /Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ folder. Look for a .plist file with "com.apple.loginwindow." in the file name followed by some numbers in hexadecimal. Select the file. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and in the Sharing and Permissions panel click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window. If you also find a file with the same filename but with a last extension of ".lockfile," then you should delete it.
The above should eliminate the Resume feature system-wide. Note that any future system updates or upgrades will likely undo these changes. You will then need to repeat this procedure assuming there are no major changes in OS X related to it.

  • Report Generation tool kit for MS office (Opening an existing excel file and appending to the bottom)

I don't have any problems creating and filling an excel sheet with data. I use the New Report.vi, Easy Title.vi, and Easy Text.vi to create the file. I then save and dispose properly.
What I don't seem to be able to do is open the exsting file and append data to the end of the sheet.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    todd

    Hi Todd,
You can do this by creating a new Excel report with the existing excel file path wired to the "template" input. Then use "Excel Get Last Row.vi" (located under Report Generation\Excel Specific\Excel General) to obtain the location of the last row. Then use that location to input new data into the file.
    Hope this helps,
    Dan
