Restore backup from encrypted external drive?

I seen many articles about restoring Time Machine backups encypted/non-encrypted from external hard drives. Is there any problem restoring an unencrypted Time Machine backup from an OS X encrypted external hard drive?

The procedure is the same, whether the backup is encrypted or not.

  • Restoring backup from an external drive

    Hi,
My pictures (originals) were stored in an external drive, library in the default location and the preference "copy items to the iphoto library" off.
Yesterday my external drive just stopped working now iphoto can't show me any picture anymore!!
I backup this external drive into another daily, so I have a copy of all originals (same structure) in another external drive.
How can I instruct iphoto to redirect to this other drive the smoothest way possible?
    Thanks,
    jp

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
This is the major weakness of running iPhoto in Referenced Mode.
    Let’s try the easy one:
    1. Make sure the alternative disk has the exact same name as the damaged one, so that the path to the files is the same.
    If that fails:
    2. Select a photo in an Event in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). It will tell you that it cannot find the file and ask if you would like to locate it. Do.
If you’re lucky, you’ll only need to do this for one file per Event, as this will connect up all the other files in that Event.
If you’re unlucky you’ll need to do this for every pic in your Library.
    Regards
    TD
Jim: Your suggestion won’t work because the Library is not on the disk, only the photos.

  • Transfer Time Machine backup from one external drive to another

Surely this has been covered, but I can't find it.
If you have your time machine backup on an external drive and get a new (larger) external drive, what is the best way to transfer the backup from one drive to the other (and define the new drive as the backup drive)? Straight copy ? Then to define the new drive, rename old drive to something else and name new drive the backup name?

I haven't tried this yet but a few other methods are described at http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071128055047339

  • Cannot transfer Time Machine backups from one external drive to another

Since I bought my 13 inch MacBook Pro in September 2014 I've been keeping Time Machine backups on an external 1TB Lacie Rugged.  This is partitioned into three and one of the partitions contains my iPhoto library.
Last weekend I left my MBP disconnected from the power source but with the external hard drive still plugged in.  Long story short - the battery level fell below the minimum needed to operate so it turned itself off and 'disconnected' the external hard drive.  This resulted in a corrupted iPhoto library which is no longer accessible.
In order to restore my iPhoto Library from another backup I needed to buy a second external hard drive.  Yesterday I bought a 2TB Lacie Rugged which I've now partitioned into 5.
I want to move my Time Machine backups from the 1TB Lacie Rugged to a partition on the 2TB Lacie Rugged (to take advantage of the new Lacie's Thunderbolt connection).
I read the Apple article -
HT202380: Time Machine: How to transfer backups from the current backup drive to a new backup drive
and followed the instructions precisely.  About 2 hours into the transfer I came back to my MacBook Pro and saw a message saying that it was not possible to complete the transfer because I did not have the correct permissions.  The only option was to click the OK button which stopped the transfer.
Can anyone advise what I should do next?
    Cheers

    Hi Eric,
Thank you for your response.  I came across another thread yesterday which suggested the Restore via Disk Utility method.  It worked for me, too.  This was after I had tried following the method suggested in the Apple article above three times but each time the message was the same ....
The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items.
I dare say that Apple would like to have us believe that it's a simple matter of 'drag and drop' but it certainly wasn't for me.  From what I've read the permission problem crops up fairly frequently. Before the second and third attempts  I had already amended Permissions on the Time Machine backups so that everyone could read and write, so that mustn't have been the problem.  I'm the only person who uses my computer so that's not a problem.
The next problem I have is that I decided I would use the Restore route to transfer my SuperDuper clone rather than start from scratch.  Unfortunately, the partition size on my original backup disk where SuperDuper clone is is 350GB and the size of the SuperDuper clone partition on my new backup is 300GB.
Of course, Apple says you can resize partitions using Disk Utility.  What they don't say is you can downsize partitions but (in my experience and that of many other frustrated users on various forums) you CANNOT upsize using Disk Utility.  I have 100GB spare on my external hard drive (from downsizing two partitions by 50GB each) BUT there is no way Disk Utility will let me increase the size of SuperDuper partition to 350GB :-(((

  • My experiences copying Time Machine backups from one external drive to another

I am reposting this.  The first one was rejected because it contained 'product feedback' and I was directed to the 'Terms of Use'.  The 'Terms of Use' say feedback is welcome...***?!?
My 3TB external drive started to die a few weeks ago.  It was still under warranty and I just got the new one yesterday.  I wanted to preserve all my backups (I had every backup for my late 2012 iMac) on it.
The short of it is that there were like 20-25 million files there or something crazy like that. Finder was going to take forever to count the files.  cp and rsync would take like a week. I decided it wasn't worth the hassle, so I just securely erased the old disk and did a new initial backup on the new disk.
The old disk would only mount in read-only mode, so I couldn't prune the backups down to a manageable size. Unless you only have a handful of backups, or you can internally mount the drives to make it go faster, it's going to take forever to do this.

  • Is there any way to restore data from an external drive to another external drive without using the macbook pro you backed up?

Is that I sold my macbook pro an the person who bought it needs it quickly so I have an external drive but it is not portable so I bought a portable external drive but it may take a while to arrive so I backed up my data with the external drive that I have in my house but I would like to know if I can restore my data to the new external drive without the macbook pro and just with the external drive of my house to the portable external drive.
    Thank you

No, that's not possible. A computer is required in order to effect such a transfer. Connect both drives to your computer. You can use Disk Utility to clone one drive to the other. Be sure you first partition and format the new drive:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new external drive. Source means the old external drive.

  • Need to delete old time machine backups from a external drive

was using a 500 gb external drive for time machine so when i upgraded to time capsule 2 tb i just started all over basically. i have these back ups abd videos i wanted to delete from the toshiba dr but appear and attempt to erase securely everytime i need to connect the toshiba to my mac to transfer stuff. i want to use this disk with whats on there like videos and music but i cant seem to figure out how to delete these backups...

Don't try to transfer any old backups to your new TC TM backup drive. Just create a new complete backup. I hope you aren't someone that is trying to store files in a TM backup that you have deleted from your internal hard drive. That is not what TM is for and eventually those deleted files will be removed/deleted from the TM backups.

  • I can't restore photos from my external drive

I can't get my files (e.g. iphoto library) from my WD external hard drive onto my macbook pro.  I wanted to transfer some of the files from my old imac (because I think the hard drive is about to die and I took it in to get it fixed) to my relatively new macbook.  I disconnected the external hard drive from the old mac and connected it to the macbook and used the migration assistant.  It didn't work.  I then tried to import photos, but this didn't work..."preparing to import" never changed over many hours.  I did find the individual file location on the external hard drive, but I don't have "permission" to open the folder and it does not give me the option of giving the password.  Please help!

To move and iPhoto Library from the external, simply drag it to your disk.
Never try import one Library to another. It's a mess.

  • How to transfer backup from another external drive

Have a LaCie making clicking sounds ...about to go.  Should I transfer my docs to a disk before buying the Time Capsule ? How do you  transfer info to the Time Capsule?

Transfer any documents you have immediately back to your Mac.. if they are not just backups..
If you don't have space then yes, get another external drive.
The TC is for TM backups.. if you mix backups and data on it, can lead to issues.. also the TC is not designed to store files.. we recommend against it.
    The info is here though.
    http://pondini.org/TM/TCQ3.html
The TC is just a network drive if you copy to it, just standard copy and paste via finder.

  • Restoring time machine files from unmounted external drive

    Help please..
I have a time machine backup I need to restore.  It's a backup from an external drive that has failed.
When I go "enter time machine," I can't see the contents from the external drive anymore to restore it.. because the external drive isn't mounted.  It's not mounted because it has failed.  I can see when I browse the TM backup directly via finder there are files from the amounted drive in the backup... as I'd expect.
So... How do I restore drives from an unmounted external drive?
Do I need to buy a new drive and name it the same as the old drive?  Then will it show up?

While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.

  • I had to reformat my OSX 10.5.8 and i can't restore my emails from my time machine backup from an external hard drive - only the latest (post backup) time machine back ups are available to restore. Please can any help

I had to reformat my OSX 10.5.8 and I can't restore my emails from my time machine backup from an external hard drive - only the latest (post backup) time machine back ups are available to restore. Please can any help? I can find the mail folder in my libraries, but the Restore Button is grayed out

OSX treats the reformatted drive as a different one; it's the same as replacing it, and the old one is no longer connected.
See #E3 in  Time Machine - Troubleshooting to see and restore from the "old" drive.
And, you may not want to restore via the Finder; see the blue box in #15 of  Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

  • Unable to backup from one external USB drive to another

Hi all, this one's been doing my head in for a few days and now I'm waving the white flag of surrender and deciding to ask on here.
I'm trying to backup some of my video files off one of my external HDDs onto another external HDD (or DVD - more on that in a minute) but I don't appear to be able to do so. The files I'm attempting to back up are either my own DVD rips or iTunes Movie purchases, since we don't yet have Movies in the Cloud in the UK. At various points during the copy procedure I get the following messages:
The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in <<various names>>.m4v can't be read or written. (Error code -36)
then, after clicking OK, I get:
The operation can't be completed because one or more required items can't be found (Error code -43)
If I use Finder to navigate to the offending named file, there it is in its original place on external disk 1 all nice and happy. In iTunes the file is in the playlist and is perfectly playable. I have turned off "enable disks to sleep where possible" in Preferences to see if one or the other may be going to sleep during the operation. If I use Disk Utility to verify the two HDDs in question both come up as OK. User Permissions are of course off for the external drives and I have tried reformatting the 2nd drive jsut in case. Obviously I can't reformat drive 1 since it contains the data I'm trying to back up and since I can't back it up......you get the idea.
If I try to use a DVD to backup the media files I'm getting the same errors, along with (in the case of an external DVD drive) something about comunnication between the computer and the drive has failed. Now I'm fairly sure I should be able to backup my data for archiving purposes so does anyone have any idea what could be casuing this problem?
I'm currently trying again, using yet another external drive and to copy just over 18.5GB it's giving me an estimated completion time of 15 hours and has seemingly frozen on 50.3MB copied! Now I know USB 2.0 is slow by today's standards but still I feel this is a little excessive. It's now down to 3 hours estimated but keeps pausing and climbing to 15+ then back down again. I'm guessing it's either a read error from disk 1 or a write error to disk 2 but since Verify Disk is showing both are OK I'm not sure how to tell which. And now I just got the error messages quoted at the top of the page again.
    OK, ideas anyone.....

You can copy the entire  to a file.  Use the dmg extension.  Double click on file to mount.
Perhaps you should run disk utility on the drive. Maybe the filesystem is mess up.
    Do a  bit-by-bit copy
You can use the following command to display all partitions:
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
    # This is a little deep.
#It is  best to do the pdisk command before you eject the external hard drive. Now, eject the external hard drive.  Do another pdisk command to see what drive name has disappeared.  The disappearing name is the name of your external hard drive.
    sudo pdisk -l
    #for details...
    man pdisk
    # Do a  bit-by-bit copy.
#eject the partition in the normal GUI
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
    dd if=/dev/disk0s10 bs=4096 | gzip | dd of=~/disk0-s10 bs=4096
#this can take awhile. Open another window and do ls -l ~/disk0-s10
    # Here is  how to restore the partition.
    dd if=~/disk0-s10 bs=4096 | gunzip | dd of=/dev/disk0s10 bs=4096
Don't zero out your unused records, since you are having problems with your disk.
Here is another way to run the command. When you run the command in the background you can question how for the process has gotten.  Adjust or eliminate count as needed.
    mac $ dd if=/dev/zero  bs=1024 count=1kx1k of=/Volumes/MacOSFirewire/zero&
    [1] 510
    mac $ man kill
    mac $ kill -s siginfo 510
    953197+0 records in
    953196+0 records out
    976072704 bytes transferred in 82.524495 secs (11827673 bytes/sec)
    mac $ 1048576+0 records in
    1048576+0 records out
    1073741824 bytes transferred in 89.700333 secs (11970322 bytes/sec)
Here are two utilities for making a complete backup of your internal hard drive.  I've recommend using one of these so that you can create a bootable system  on your external hard drive. ( PPC require a firewire connected drive. )  Once created, you can run your system from the external drive.  Hold down the option key on your keyboard then power on your machine.  This will bring you in startup manager click on the drive image you wish to boot then click on the arrow key to the right.

  • Lightroom - how to restore backed up files (not Lightroom catalogue) from one external drive to another?

How to restore backed up files (not lightroom catalogue) from one external drive to another.
I recently backuped my photo files from one external drive to another. The backup (carbon copy cloner) pointed to some corrupt files on the original drive.
I have deleted those files and am finding good copies of them  in Time Machine backups.
I want to get rid of the original external drive; use the recent backup as my main external and then back it up onto a brand new drive.
What I am not sure about is how to point lightroom to the backups so it knows to look on the new drive instead of the old drive and all those exclamation marks and question marks go away.
There are close to 60,000 images in numerous folders all with one 'parent folder.'
My best guess is from Lightroom Help - Create and Manage Folders -  Locate Missing Folders
Can I point to the one parent folder and all the subfolders will come back?
Is this the process to recover files into lightroom and will there be a problem with so many photos?

If you made a full catalog backup using the organizer's backup command, and you did it to a removable drive, yes, you can restore it to the mac. A backup made on discs will not work, though.
