Restore catalog to new pc after unexpected event (loss or damage to old pc)

I know there is a recommended way to use PSE catalog backup to transfer a catalog to a new pc
http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/backup-restore-move-catalog-photoshop.html
This is fine for when I have planned to move to a new pc.
But what about if the move to the new pc is unexpected (such as after a loss of the pc or the pc stops working)?
In this case, I would have an up-to-date backup of the old pc (because this is done automatically on a schedule), but would not have an up-to-date backup of the built in PSE catalog backup (because it is not automated).
How do I use my regular drive backup to restore the PSE catalog to the new PC, whilst preserving my albums?
Thanks

Well you obviously have another PC, so once you have everything linked up you can use the built-in back-up/restore to transfer to a mac.
My question is hypothetical. Before I invest a lot of time in creating albums and tags etc, I want to know that I can recover the information if an unexpected loss of the PC occurs.
If not! well you can't expect to transfer an automatic system backup from Windows to Mac OSX.
Well, that depends on how PSE organiser operates (something I am trying to understand).
With iTunes, for example, I can easily transfer the my automated backups between Windows & Mac, preserving the information held in the database (song ratings etc).
By the way, I am not talking about using an image based backup (Windows backup / Time Machine / Norton Ghost). I am talking about using my own automated folder-based backup that would include my photos folder and the folder containg the PSE catalog.

If you haven't been keeping a backup of your downloads (none of your iTunes downloads are included in an iCloud backup, apps, music etc are only redownloadable whilst they remain in your country's store) then you can try contacting iTunes support and see if they will grant you a redownload : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/- click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption

  • Restore catalog to new hard drive on same PC

I am using PSE 5 on Win XP.
I had an unexpected (aren't they all)Win XP Op. Sys. problem that required my technician to install a new hard drive with Win XP Op Sys.
The old drive is still in the computer and all data is accessible. (It was drive 'C' and is now drive 'F'. The new drive is now 'C')
All my pictures (5000+)are still there and on drive 'F'.
    I re-installed PSE 5 on the new drive 'C'.
How can I get my catalogs ( there are 4 of them) from Drive 'F' to the new PSE 5 on drive 'C'? Is there a drag and drop method? If so, where are the catalogs data located and what file name?
I do have an old backup from last April on an external hard drive but as usual it is missing my latest photos. If possible, I would like to recover all my old catalogs from the old drive but will use the backup if necessary.
A second question is, if I use the restore feature from the external HD, it asks if I want to restore to the "original location" or a "new location".
Does this mean that the "original location" would be the external HD or the original location on the computer which is now drive 'F'?
    Thanks
    Dave Mason

    Paige:
I found the .psa folders in the hidden files just where you said they would be.
So now I was thinking, can I just move/copy these .psa catalogs to the "C" drive and then reconnect all the album photos back to the "F" drive where they are stored? This may take some time but I don't like to do any unneccesary moving.
    Thanks
    Dave Mason
    Paige,
I don't know what happened to your post. Forum is really acting quirky but below is a partial copy of your reponse.
Your catalogs are .psa files on what is now your F drive. Search for them. You may have to make folders unhidden for them to be found. When you find them, move them to your C drive anywhere where you can find them easily.
Also, you need to move your photos from F to C. The folder names, the folder tree, and the file names, should be *exactly* what they were before. You can do this via drag and drop, or copy and paste, in Windows. If they were in C:\My Pictures\Some_Stupid_Folder_Name before, then that's exactly where they should be after you copy them to the new C Drive.
Then, double-click on one of your catalog files, and you should be up and running. The catalog may have to rebuild thumbnails, which takes quite a long time if you have a lot of photos, but it will work.

  • Transfer Catalog to new computer after I've deleted photos on old

I still use Photoshop Elements 5.0 since it does the basic things I need, although I could upgrade if necessary. My problem is that I want to transfer the CATALOG from my old XP computer to my new Win7 but I mistakenly deleted the photos (not the catalog) from my XP already! The photos are on my new computer but most of the catalog is not. Can I back up the catalog only, restore it to my new computer, and have it reconnect to the photos on my new computer? I have already seen the help articles on “Use Backup, Restore to move catalog” and “Common catalog upgrade issues”, but I don’t want to backup and restore the catalog and get everything messed up! BTW, although all the photos are on my new computer, the Win7 catalog references only August 2010 and May 2011-July 2012; the XP catalog contains references from July 2007-April 2011 (August 2010 is on both).

Hi again, Ken. Thanks for all your help with this issue. I wanted to test my various ideas before responding to your latest message.
Since I had a conglomeration of different images and captions on each computer, I defined what was where for each folder. All photos were on my new computer, some captioned many not, but most were not in a PSE catalog. Some but not all photos were on my old computer after I loaded photos from an incomplete flash drive copy, either captioned or not. I was afraid to do any backup and restores in case I messed things up further.
Since I had more complete files on my new computer, I decided to work with it instead of backing up and restoring from my old. I decided to start with my new computer to “Get Photos” from folders not in a catalog; that includes most of my photos. I tested these depending on whether or not they were captioned and whether or not they were already in the catalog. I created a matrix to determine how to handle each “type” of folder: HD only, HD captioned, PSE only, PSE captioned, and various combinations. Don’t try to parse this! I tested each type of folder to determine what I had to do for each and made notes so I can complete the job as time permits.
Soon I will perform a full backup. When I have “completed” the restoration task, I should be able to do an incremental backup and have everything on a 16GB flash drive, right?
Yes, complicated, but I have learned a LOT about working with Photoshop Elements, and your comments have helped me with that. So, thanks for your attention to my problem. I still have a bunch of work to do, but I think I know what I’m doing now. At this point I can delete all photos and catalogs from my old computer (a 2005 Dell Inspiron 6000) and give it to a friend whose computer is even older (a 1998 or older computer that is barely operational).
    Again, thanks for your help!

  • Time Machine problem after restoring to a new HD (after my original HD failed)

I am running Lion 10.7.5 on a MacBook Pro Late '11
My HD was getting SMART errors, so I did a complete back up using Time Machine using a WD My Passport 1TB external, and then sent my MBP to Apple for HD replacement (under my Applecare plan).
I collected it yesterday and restored my system using Time Machine (using the data from my external HD) and everything was restored perfectly, which was great,
However, I'm now encountering a problem after plugging my external HD back into my MBP on the new system. Rather than Time Machine doing a swift 'top up' back up, it appears that TM is attempting to do a full back up. (I have 300GB and it took nearly 24hours to backup on the faulty drive) Is this normal after installing a new HD? Bearing in mind the Time Machine data is still on my external drive?
It's also appearing to be taking FOREVER to do this entire back up again. It is stuck on 'preparing back up' and when I do get some movement, it's doing a couple of KB's at a time and with no genuine back up progress.
Fundamentally, I just want to just top up my Time Machine back up without having do a complete back up, again. (which doesn't actually seem possible, viable at the min)
Any help / support would be much appreciated

AFAIK, it'll do that since the HD has a different UUID and the old TM backup won't recognize it. See Pondini's TM FAQs, for starters.

  • HT4859 How content is restored to a new device after choosing start as new iPhone

I got a new 3GS that is built with iOS5.
The thing is my former 3GS had the iOS6 and hence my recent iCloud backups were done with iOS6.
When tried to choose "Restore from iCloud backup" I could only see very old backups (I assume latest iCloud backup with the iOS5). the apple support (at the Genius Bar) advised me to later upgrade to iOS6 and restore from iCloud; and right there he chose "start as a new iPhone".
Now I upgraded to iOS6, signed in on with my appleID under Settings>iCloud but can't find how to manually restore from iCloud and get to my latest backup (on the phone I see only manuall backup, no manual restore - I can't see anything to do so on iTunes neither)

I just realized how to sort this out; so sharing the update...
I think there's no manual restore from iCloud and the only way is to go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings and start over from the Set up iPhone screen and choose "Restore from iCloud Backup"
Given that I upgraded to iOS6 in the meantime, I can now see my recent backup I was after.

  • Locked controls on new tab after finishing event structure

    Greetings All,
My first question for the forum.  I found a few posts which had similar issues but I still can't seem to figure this one out.
This program creates a temperature profile and it's within a much larger program where I want the user to be able to cancel, continue, go back a step, etc.  It all works fine until I leave the event structure loop and go to the verify tab.  The user should be able to continue or cancel but the buttons will not press.  I believe the event structure is locking the front panel but I turned off the lock for that case and still no go.
I've attached the LLB, please check it out.  Any help will be most appreciated.

    Hi,
The answer is almost in the question, just go to the event structure and disable the option "lock front panel until event completes"

  • New install after hard drive loss - no backup available - what to do?

    Hi,
Recently lost my iTunes library due to harddrive failure. Unfortunately I do not have any backup of my library at all. Will I lose all my content from my iPodTouch if I synchronise with a blank iTunes library?
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

*Will I lose all my content from my iPodTouch if I synchronise with a blank iTunes library?*
Yes you will. Open iTunes first and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices and check the box "Prevent iPods and iPhones from syncing automatically" and choose Ok before connecting your device.
If you want to recover the music from the iPod transfer it to your new computer there are a few things you can do. iTunes will only give you the option to copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPhone or iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
Purchased applications can be downloaded over again, see this article for details: How to redownload purchased applications from the App Store
For everything else (music from CDs etc.) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod Touch or iPhone. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer data (such as playcounts and ratings), movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well.
A selection of iPod/iPhone to iTunes utilities:
Senuti Mac Only (iPod Touch & iPhone compatible)
SharePod Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPodRip Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
Music Rescue Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • Restore catalog function is corrupted

Backed up catalog of 5001 images following instructions to the letter. Bought a new computer and installed the same pse 10 that was installed on the first computer. Attempted to restore catalog to new computer. All 5001 images made it as well as the 153 keyword tags. What's the problem you ask? There are hundreds of thumbnails that have the dreaded "diagonally torn negative" image and even more hundreds have hour glasses in place of my pictures. EVERY SINGLE TIME I PURCHASE A NEW COMPUTER AND ATTEMPT TO RESTORE MY CATALOG I HAVE PROBLEMS. ADOBE HAS A BIG PROBLEM WITH THIS PART OF THEIR PROGRAMS. Does anyone know what they are doing? Is there a human that can help with this? I can fly to your corporate offices if someone there would help me out.
    Thanks

Hi there.  I have PSE 10 on a Windows 7 laptop.  I have a very large catalog that contains photo and videos from over 11 years.  I have had to move some media to an external drive due to drive space.  I basically have years current - 2010 stored on my laptops HD.  2010 - older is on external HD.  Most of the videos are also on HD.
I am at a point where its time to wipe my PC and start fresh or buy a new laptop.  In the past, I have use the backup and restore feature to handle my library of media and that has worked great.  Now, being spanned between multiple HD, I don't know how to proceed.  I fear that the catalog is too large for my laptop HD.  So I cant backup and restore, then move some media to external HD.
My only thought is to restore to external HD, then move stuff to internal HD?  Or use a third party solution and restore the directory structure manually?
    Any suggestions?
    Jason.
My preferred solution would be to do a full backup on an external drive with enough free space. The backup will contain everything to restore the catalog and photo/video files on a new destination, even if those files are split today between several drives. If you choose the option to restore on 'custom' location keeping file structure, the different drives will be replaced by different master folders on the destination drive. That could be the new computer if it has enough space or another external drive. (It's not recommended to choose the backup external drive as the destination one, but that should work).

Any replacement device is going to have a new IMEI. You need to contact whomever replaced your device (Apple or Authorized Apple Service Provider) and work through them and your carrier. You should have some paperwork from the replacement to show the carrier.

  • Migrate to New PC and Upgrade from PSE7 to PSE9 - How do I Restore Catalog?

    Hello,
I recently bought a new PC.  To migrate, I copied all of my data files (including 50GBs of images) to the new PC HDD.  I also performed a full backup of my two PSE7 catalogs I want to migrate.
I installed PSE9 on the new machine.  When I restore from my PSE7 backup file, will it recognize the source file images already present on the HDD and only restore the catalog metadata or will the PSE9 create a new copy resulting in two copies of the same file?
    I appreciate the help.

Apologies for butting into this thread. I have a similar problem. I have just acquired a new PC and I'm trying to migrate my PSE7 program and some 15,000 images into the new PC. Unfortunately I was ignorant of the Elements Backup process and have always simply backed up my image files from Windows Explorer, as with all my other types of data, onto external drives.
I installed PSE7 onto the new desktop and dragged the image folders and contents across from a Windows Explorer window onto the blank PSE Organiser pane. PSE then imported all the images into Organiser but only a small proportion came across with their tags. No categories or sub-categories transferred with the images.
Having realised I'd done things entirely the wrong way I then started to read the Help (typical male - read the instructions AFTER you've screwed up!) I found out how to import the category/sub-category structure and have done that, but it's simply appeared as a list under the heading "Imported Keyword Tags" which isn't tidy. The bigger problem is that most of the images have lost their basic keyword tags and there are way too many to go through and re-tag!
So what's the best way out of this mess? I could perhaps delete the whole catalogue (I have just one) from the new PC's PSE7 (leaving the images still on the hard drive) and do a Back-up in PSE7 on the old PC and then attempt to "restore" this to the new PC - but will this create a second edition of all my images on the new PC's hard drive?
Do I have to go right back to square one and delete the image files from the new PC hard drive and do a full Backup on the old machine and Restore on the new one (having first deleted the Catalogue from the new PC)?

iPad can connect only in one iTunes Library. If you want to connect it to a iTunes Library then you have to erase it. You can erase it from iTunes. Make sure you iPad doesn't have a password, or if it has a password make sure that you connect to the computer and enter the password of your iPad

  • Bought iPhone 5S refurb from service provider 'as new'. After restore multiple Apple ID's are offered,1 of which belongs to me, the others have never been used on my phone. iCloud restore from backup is now permanently incomplete. Ideas?

There are several factors involved here, I shall explain them as best I can and will include all details, regardless of immediate relevancy:
In August of last year I purchased a new MBP15", and 2 months later I purchased an iPhone 5s refurb (unused) from my service provider (02), there were no issues connecting the two or with iCloud. Fast-forward several months to February I had a liquid spill on my laptop that rendered it unusable. After a month my insurance came through and I received a new laptop, and in order to successfully pair my replaced MBP with my 5S I performed a restore on my iPhone after backing up my data on iCloud.
When I turned on my iPhone after the restore, I was presented with the usual set-up process: wi-fi connection was completed without issue, as was enabling location services, entering my Apple ID and choosing my selected back-up.However, I was subsequently presented with an option to transfer purchases from an email address have never used and didn't recognise, so I declined. Immediately afterwards, a second Apple ID (again that I neither used nor recognised) popped up for the same reason, I declined, a third unknown Apple ID popped up, I declined again. After declining the three previous IDs, the old email address for my ID was presented to me, I entered my password to see what happened and it declined, saying 'the email is no longer valid.
After this, the restore continued, I finished setting up my iCloud with my correct ID. Since then (about a week ago) my iPhone has been unsuccessfully trying to 'restore from iCloud Backup', and every time I exit & re-enter a Wi-Fi zone I am presented with the same series of incorrect Apple ID's

The answer is very simple: You were not the original owner of the phone. Target sold you a phone that had been returned. You can verify the date of the original sale here: Apple - Support - Check Your Service and Support Coverage. I suspect you will find that the warranty expiration date is not one year from the date that you bought it.

BTW, the phone has never been jailbroken or anything.  Stock standard
