Restore collections and captions after disk format

Hi,
What can I do to preserve my captions and collections after formatting the disk?
Also, I would like to back-up all my pictures and related information linked to collections and captions to a CD / DVD. Is this possible with PSASE 3.0?
Are there some files which I can save manually and restore them after formatting?
Thank you!

Lee
The "SE" versions of PSA keep their catalog in a fixed place. I don't know exactly where that is for SE 2.
BTW, you do understand that your images are not in the catalog? It just holds references to the image files.

  • How to restore playlists and ratings after hard drive format

Several people have reported problems restoring paylists and ratings after reformating a hard drive. Here is what worked for me and what did not.
I had to reformat my hard drive. Before doing that I exported my playlists from itunes to another hard drive as an xml file. I also copied the folder with all my songs to another drive. (Also of course had it backed up on DVDs.)Then I copied the itunes library files (see url http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93732) to anoher drive.
After reformating my hard drive and installing the lastest verion of ITunes, I copied the actual songs back into a subfolder in my music folder. I then told iTunes to import the subfolder with the actual music. That resulted in a restored library that lacked playlists and ratings.
    Don't do this
I purchased Anapod ($30.00) because its web page said (http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/):
"Anapod CopyGear is an easy-to-use, compact utility for copying music tracks, playlists, podcasts, photos, and videos from your iPod back to your PC."
Well, I did transfer 104 playlists back to my iTunes library through the Anapod backup function. However, the transfer also put more than 20 gigs of duplicate songs into the library. All of the songs listed in the playlists were duplicated in iTunes. I could find no way in Anapod to simply copy the ratings and the playlists. Anapod documentation was outdated. For example the online help pages said that playlists could not be backed up. This was confusing because I had just done that.
"In a future release we will be adding the ability to backup your iPod playlists. This will allow you to generate backup files of your iPod playlists on the computer. These files will not be usable on your computer though. They can only be used to restore playlists at a later time on your iPod (assuming it still carries all the audio files referred to in that playlist)." This text is from url http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/support/tome/tx2pc.php#5.1.2
I sent requests to Anapod for help today, but they have not been answered yet. Docs truly did not seem to help. Would have been good if there was a pdf file rather than just an online help html file that seemed outdated.
    This worked for me:
I ended up having iTunes wipe out the entire library because of all the dups Anapod made. (Made sure that iTunes only wiped out library and did not delete actual songs from hard drive. Then I had iTunes import my subfolder with songs again. That brought me back to where I was before wasting money and much time on Anapod.
After I had my iTunes library up (without ratings and playlists and after finding Anapod did not meet my needs.
    1. I imported the xml file to which I had exported playlists before reformating hard drive. That gave me the playlists back although an error message said some items not copied because the music tracks listed in playlists were not in my iTunes library. --Possibly I deleted songs after playlists were downloaded some time ago to iPod. Importing the xml file is probably not necessary because of what I did below.
    2. Quit iTunes
    3. Because my song ratings were still missing, I then moved the iTunes library files made by the new version of iTunes into a different folder.
    4. Then I put my old version 4 library files into the place where the library files should be.
    5. Then I crossed my fingers and restarted iTunes. It took awhile to start and said it was updating my library files. Now I have back most or all of my playlists and ratings.
If problems develop, I will probably wipe out iTunes library and use Anapod to move everything from my iPod into a folder and tell iTunes to import that folder. That approach might avoid the dups that Anapod makes when restoring playlists to iTunes.
So my message is keep your actual songs backed up somewhere (such as DVD's and anotehr hard drive) and keep a duplicate copy of your library files somewhere not on your hard drive. With these items you should be able to restore iTunes library to its former status.
Sorry for the length of this message. Hope it helps someone.

    The simple version of above:
iTunes Files to Backup (anytime you make additions or changes to the Music or Library that you want to retain)
    1) All music files in their current folder structure (usually located in and under the ‘iTunes Music’ folder)
    2) The Library database file: ‘iTunes Library.itl’ located in the ‘iTunes’ folder
    3) The Library XML file: ‘iTunes Music Library.xml’ located in the ‘iTunes’ folder
    4) Any XML playlist files created for Playlist retention
    5) The two iTunes.pref files (optional)
    -- C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
    -- C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer Inc\iTunes.pref
    6) The XML file of Ratings, Play Counts and Last Played attributes saved from the main Library and created by Otto’s SaveRatings script (also optional, but recommended):
“Download this: http://ottodestruct.com/itunes/SaveRatings.zip . It's a program, just run it like any other program. Run it on the machine where you're copying the info from BEFORE you move the files to the new machine. Click the "Save Ratings" button and it'll create a ratings.xml file. Now when you move the files, move the program and this file as well. Then after you make your new iTunes library, run it again and click the "Restore Ratings" button. Voila, all your information is back in the Library. Well, most of it anyway, it's not perfect. It'll tell you what songs it couldn't figure out though, and there's usually not very many.”

  • How to restore views and procedures after drop user command?

How to restore views and procedures after drop user command?
We have 817 EE on NT and one developer created a lot of procedures, functions and vews. DB was not backuped and archived and export has not been done - our fault and we understand it. Sorry for this.
Ok, now the story: another developer dropped this db user and we lost everything: procedures, functions and vews. The new user with trhe same name was created and new schema was imported in this user, but all old objects are lost. We don't have export and backup and archive log files.
Question: may we can restore this lost stuff from some other sources. We are looking for lost codes, not data. May be we can use redo logs or shared pool or any other things. Any idea will be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Victor
    [email protected]

The switch has occurred after user was dropped, the data has been overwritten and there is be no way to use redo log files.
I would like to explore another opportunity. Is possible to use Shared Pool or any Data Dictionary internal information to restore texts of the lost SQL and PL/SQL scripts executed in this DB before user was dropped? Not too many scripts are executed in this DB and the lost ones may still be in stack. I remember that Shared Pool (cash) should keep last executed scripts in order to improve performance. They probably are kept in some special format. Can we restore these scripts? Of course they also might be pushed out by Import that had been done after user was dropped.
    Thanks for your help,
    Victor

  • Problem restoring files and settings after a recovery

I did a system recovery using recovery disks purchased from HP. My files and settings were backed up during the recovery program on an external drive.
There were no instructions included on restoring files and settings after the system recovery. I called HP and a support tech told me to run the backup program on the external drive from the admin profile which I did. However, the program put my old files on my C drive at the following location C:\System Recovery Files\C\Users\Bill.
How do I use these files under my current user profile at C:\Users\Bill?
I suppose I could move my data files, folder by folder, but is there an easier and better way?
    My computer is as follows:
    HP Pavilion GC673AAR-ABA m8100n, SN MX3733051W
    Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit
    This question was solved.

Unfortunately the backup feature within the recovery manager is used as a last resort option for gathering whatever files can be saved, and there is no way to place the files back to where they were previously.

  • Restore tags and captions

I have a PC with Windows Vista and am using Elements 5.0. Because of a virus I had to have my hard drive formatted and the data restored on it. My pictures have all been retaimed but I have lost a lot of tags and captions. I have a Windows backup that I did before the format. Can I restore the tags and captions from this backup and in what file are they stored?

Users in the Photoshop Elements forum may be better equipped to answer your question
Photoshop users use Bridge or Lightroom for that type of function. So that information would be stored in different locations than where it would be stored for Element users.

  • How to restore Mail and iphoto after a complete OS reinstall

    Hi
I have searched as best I can to see if anyone has asked the same question, but no luck.
I want to do a complete reinstall of Leopard. I have an external HD and have activated TM so as far as I know I have a full back up.
Once I reloaded the OS can i bring back my Mail set up as it is. By this I mean, is there a way to restore all my folders, emails and settings?
Also with iphoto, can i bring it all back in as it is now?
I fully understand how to get a file back using TM, it seems pretty easy, but applications seem a little more difficult.
Please can someone give me some advice on this.
    Many many thanks
    Stewart

So you intend to erase (or replace) your boot disk and install Leopard on it, right? After the installation finishes, you'll be asked to create your account etc etc etc. The very last step is you are asked if you'd like to use the Migration Assistant to restore from another Mac or TimeMachine. If you say yes the Migration Assistant starts up and you can choose your TimeMachine drive.
Here I'm fuzzy because I've not performed this step. I think you'll get the same options as you do if you migrate from another Mac - the choice of Applications, Files/Folder, or Library. If I'm correct, you choose what you want to migrate, start it, and walk away until it finishes.
Now I know this works because I did before I knew I could use the Migration Assistant with TimeMachine. After you get to the desktop you select TimeMachine and select the drive that has the backup. TimeMachine starts up and you can browse the folders and times until you find a folder/file you want to transfer. Select it, click on the Restore button down at the bottom right hand corner of the screen, and let it work.

  • Can't reinstall SL after disk format

My problems began when a got a kernel panic when the computer was starting up on Tuesday morning. After that I could not successfully login I would get one of three error: a kernel panic, the apple logo changed to a circle with a line through it or the spinning circle below the apple logo would just keep spining.
I tried resetting the PRAM and resetting the SMC. This allowed me to login successfully once.
I tried safe mode. After about 20 minutes of the loading bar it automatically restarted but didn't solve the problem
I booted using the recovery partition. I ran disk utilities, both permissions and the disk verfied with no problems. I tried to restore the hard drive from my time machine backup but it came up with restore failed. I tried reinstalling lion (From a DVD) and I tried reinstalling snow leopard both of which failed.
After this I decided that I should do a clean install. Using disk utilities I was going to erase the hard drive but it say that it could not unmount and there were files still in use, dispite trying to run from the lion and snow leopard install disks. So I took the harddrive out and put it into a external docking station. I ran disk utilites again and this time it unmounted and erased successfully.
I put the harddrive back into my mac hoping that everything should go smoothly now with a clean install from the snow leopard disk. However the installer failed twice and looking in the installer log it failed both times because the harddrive could not be unmounted.
I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to get around this unmounting error as I have exhausted all my ideas

    Hi,
The repair disc you mention does not contain the files to reinstall Windows 7, it just provides a way to access recovery and diagnostic option etc.
    There are Two options available.
    1.  You can order an OS Recovery Disc from HP.
    Contact HP.
    2.  Another option you could consider is to create your own Windows 7 installation disc.
Before trying the following, make sure you can still read the 25 Character Product Activation key on your Windows COA label ( 5 blocks of 5 alpha/numeric sets ).
An example of a COA Label can be seen Here.
You can create a Windows 7 installation disc yourself using another PC - just download the correct Disc Image ( this must be the same version that originally came with your notebook ) from the link below and use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  These Images are clean and from a well-respected source ( Digital River ).
    Windows-7 sp1-iso-official-32-bit-and-64-bit
Use the disc to perform the installation, enter the Windows activation key found on the COA Label when requested and when the installation has completed, use the 'Phone Method' detailed in the link below to activate the OS - this method supported by Microsoft and is popular with people who just want a clean installation of Windows 7 without the additional software load normally bundled with OEM installations.

Additional drivers and software for your notebook can be found Here.

  • Ipod keeps asking me to restore over and over after updating ITunes

I opened ITunes to add some new songs, and it told me to update the latest version of ITunes, which I did, and then it told me my IPod was corrupted, and I should restore it, which I did, and now I am in that loop where it keeps telling me to restore the software. I cannot get the songs back onto my IPod. I even tried the part of changing the drive letter, and that still didn't solve my problem.
After the restore, the IPod looks okay, but whenever I plug it in to upload the songs, I get that restore error again. I see this problem over and over again, so it appears as though others are having the same problem. Can anybody help?

Can't help remembering those infamous Apple commercials where the PC guy is ridiculed. Anyway, I'll give the same model 5G/30GB one more chance. The one I got was white; maybe the blacks are better.
The fact is, these devices are indeed jammed with sensitive technology. An actual spinning hard disk that doesn't do well under vibrations or shocks, and the extra battery juice it needs are not to be ignored. I never understood why anybody would want to watch moving images on a 2-in screen to begin with. I tried to no avail to convince my son to go for iPod Nano thinking it'd be more stable with its flash memory technology (I assume that's what Nanos have). The price difference didn't make sense, and I gave in. But now, I sort of think maybe it does. Anybody with experience to put in a good word for Nano as opposed to 5G Video?

  • Restore programs and files after a restore to facory settings

When I suspected my hard drive was failing I tried recovery to factory settings, and when asked if I wanted a backup I agreed and after many hours, a backup was made and a restore to factory settings was done. I recovered the backup to my desktop, but before I move each of the folders to their rightful place (wherever that is) I wonder if an old windows image I have would be better to use? Will it restore programs without having to reinstall the. And restore my files to where they belong rather than on my desktop?
    This question was solved.

The windows backup image is not very flexible nor trustworthy from within the trade.
More knowledgeable users, as well as myself, use Macrium Free to perform Image Backups on a regular basis:
    http://download.cnet.com/Macrium-Reflect-Free/3000-2242_4-10845728.html?part=dl-&subj=dl&tag=button
The only problem with the free version is that you cannot backup individual files but you can with the paid version.
Suggest you check it out.  It is easy to use and very reliable.  It has saved me on a number of occasions.

  • Restoration of iphoto albums after disk repair

I had a serious disk problem that required complete wiping of the disk and then restoration of the original files from Time Machine. My photos (14GB worth) are now organised into years (2003,2004, etc) only and not the original titled albums. What is the file that contains the original album titles and content and where should it be located in order for iphoto to read it? The file should still be there on Time Machine. Any help appreciated to avoid manually re-allocating files to albums even if I can remember which is which.

YOu need the iPhoto library intact - there is no file that contains albums - you must restore the database as a single entity
Typically you open TM and go back to a good date, select the iphoto library and click "restore"

  • Restore Catalog and links after C drive crash

My C drive recently crashed so I've replaced it with a new drive and I'm in the process of reinstalling all my software. My photographs were all on my D drive (which was unaffected). I managed to get my old C drive working again and I've installed it as a slave (now K) drive.
I located the 'My Catolog' folder on the old C drive and copied it in the My Pictures folder on my D drive.
I then clicked File > Catalog > Custom Location and browsed to the new location for My Catalog. However, when I click on Open, it waits a few seconds then the dialogue box disappears and goes back to the main (empty) photowell: 'No items match this combination of filters...' (The filters are all ticked..)
As none of my photos have moved and I still have the orginal Catalog file, I was rather hoping that I could just point the new instal of PE9 to the Catalog and everything would look as if nothing had happened.. Is there something obvious I'm doing wrong? I've been looking at forum posts all day and not found anything quite like my situation or solutions that help.
The files within My Catalog are:
    backupCt.dat               DAT File          1KB
    catalog                        PSE9DB          126KB
    collstatus.dat               DAT File          1KB
    face.thumb.9.cache     CACHE File      15KB
    tagstatus.dat               DAT File           1KB
    thumb.5.cache            CACHE File      10KB
Very grateful in advance for any help in solving this one..
    Tony

Very many thanks Ken, not only for the answer that sorted me out, but for the speed of your reply. I found the right .pse9db (28.328KB) file on my back-up drive.
    Huge relief!
    Many thanks again.
