Restore core services folder
I fiddled in terminal with a sudo command to change the login background and then tried to change it by changing the default desktop jpeg in the core services folder. Neither worked as i ended up with a blue screen instead, my boot up time was also a lot slower. I tried to put it all back to normal and replaced everything where it should be but it didnt work.
I have tried many different things but nothng has worked. I tried reinstalling snow leopard but the problem is still there.
Asides from restoring to factory default and backing up my files, is there a way i can restore the core services folder to factory deafult again?
Can i do a disk repair using the snow leopard disk, would that work?
No, it's just repairing permissions and it doesn't require a backup, but I'd do one before you do anything so even if something goes wrong you still have your data. If it's the folder's contents that are messed up, though, it may not help much but it's worth a shot. I think if that doesn't work probably starting from scratch and putting your files back on would be the best option (i.e. completely deleting everything on the drive and reinstalling Snow Leo, but migrating just your apps and files, not the System folder). Anything in an invisible folder or in /System/, or /Library/, should be attended to with extreme care.
Anyone else have some input on this?

Classic Application SKPlugins in Core Services folder.
I noticed that I have a folder, SKPlugins (Classic Application plugins) in my Core Services folder. They have the slash through them, meaning they are invalid for my OS. I'm guessing they may have come from a data transfer from my iMac G3 when I got my iMac 5,2.
I'd like to trash these, but thought twice and searched for a clue about them. I haven't had any luck researching this. Can I trash these without causing a problem? Did they come from the transfer?

Core Services and Boot X "duplicates" -- can't trash
I am cleaning up various files and hard drives on my G4 tower.
I'm running OS 10.4.11.
I had a complete duplicate of the Applications folder on a 2nd Hard Drive.
I put it into Trash and selected Secure Empty Trash.
Most of the items in the folder were trashed okay.
But I got a warning window about "Core Services" being in use.
Yet I still have a folder of it in the System folder in the main Hard Drive.
There is (1) file inside of "Core Services" called Boot X.
I unlocked it to help the process -- but still no success with Trash.
Any suggestions to eliminate the duplicate "Core Services" folder.
Thanks,
DanIt worked!
Thank you.
I actually Googled Mac + Trash + Option Key to get the correct procedure.
There are several possible methods for "forcing" Trash to empty.
Using the Option key seems to be the easiest by far.
Thanks, again

I have an iMac purchased in May 2011. OSX Lion 10.7.3. I deleted backup file from the external hard drive which operates from Time Machine.
Now, the trash can will not empty some of the files deleted from the backup harddrive.
The trash contains-- File folder: "Core Services" which contains a locked file: "boot.efi".
It will not delete.
How do I get the trash can empty of these files?Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think? -
Last couple of days I have had an issue with Safari saying the following : The error is: “cannot decode raw data” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1015). I have reset safari and in seems to go away but it comes back. On a whim I ran my disk permissions via disk utility and noticed a whole list of stuff it fixed with the last line being: Warning: SUID file “System/Library/Core Services/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAgent” then cant be repaired. I tried redownloading safari 5.0.5 to reinstall but the installer ran and said it needed 10.6.7 to install. Since im running 10.6.8 i was like ok there must be bugs popping up in 10.6.8 update finally. any help and fixes would be great . THANKS

XML Core Services Not Installed Properly but Cannot Remove
I needed to install the XML Core Services on a Windows 2008 R2 Standard x64 server with SP1 as a prerequisite for some other software. I downloaded the file msxml6_x64.msi and installed it, but the other software said it was not there. I tried to
do a repair and to uninstall the software, but both times it also said the software was not installed. So, I tried to install the software again and it said it was already installed. Did I download the correct software? More importantly, how do I get
this thing off my server? Does anyone know a good KB article. I could not find any that really addressed this problem.
BGCSOCALHi BGCSOCAL,
à I downloaded the file msxml6_x64.msi and installed it
Would you please let me know the link which you used to download the msi file? Did you get any error message
when install it? Meanwhile, please check log file if find errors which may be related to the installation.
Please refer to following KB and check if can help you.

If any update, please feel free to let me know.
Hope this helps.

Sun took the time and energy to supply a readme that outlines supported platforms and the supported JDK. Read it.If you still can't figure it out, come back. -
What to do about error msg in Disk Utility on MacBook Air:
Warning: SUID file “System/Library/Core/Services/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDA gent"has been modified and will not be repaired.”As long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:
Permissions you can ignore on 10.5 onwards:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard onwards changed the location of a number of system components.
Poster rccharles has provided this description of what it all means:
drwxrwxrwx
d = directory
r = read
w = write
x = executeable program

Upgrade of Core Services Application Configuration Data in Yosemite
anybody knows if the upgrade of Core Services Application Configuration Data in Yosemite can be forced?
Due the my Matlab2012a failure to start, Mathworks advises to have a new version of the Core Services Application Configuration Data. They stated that a new version, a few hours after Yosemite installation would have been autoinstalled (Core Services Application Configuration Data 10.10", Version 10.39 or later!). I have setted the OS X system autodownload and installation, but after all these day my version is 1.025 and I do not see any 10.10 or 10.9 reference. The many Download trials by AppStore are completely unsuccessful at this moment.Hi friends.
Also if the Core Services Applications Data Configurations is not updated yet after many and many days since the Yosemite Installation on my iMac, I have solved my Matlab2012a problem thanks to the wonderful Mathworks Support (in particular Daniel Vandenbulcke of the Mathworks Installation Support). I describe the steps needed for starting Matlab2012a (this is the last version as to my knowledge to use XQuarz)
1. Uninstall any version you have of Xquarz and X11 if you have them already installed
2. Download and install the latest version of XQuarz
3. Go to the Applications and select the Matlab2012a.app
4. right-click, then open the package content and go to Contents/MacOS
5. duplicate the StartMATLAB making an alias (StartMATLAB.alias) then drag this copy to the Desktop or another location
6. double-click on this alias and the Terminal window will open and start the program
I hope this will solve also your problem.
Though: No help from Apple people for the Core ...problem. -

Where is the Services folder in Library in Lion?
I used Terminal to make my Library folder appear, but there's no Services folder inside. I'm pretty sure there used to be one.
Dan, there are two Library folders, one visible to all users, the other visible to the logged-in user, that is the one you do not normally see in Lion, must press Option/Alt Key.
You may have Services folder in both, as you may have other folders with identical name inside the Library folder. The difference is that one makes things visible to all users, the other to the logged-in user only, the difference being important if there are more users with the same computer.
