Restore dashboard to earlier state

I have recently formatted my Mac, and I forgot to take a screenshot of my dashboard. I tried pulling the .plists from the Library/Preferences, I also copied the widgets and the dashboard-related cache-folder, also in found in my library.
What I achieved by doing this is that my dashboard looks just as before, but all the content is missing. So, my question is, will it be possible to locate a file or something that contains what was actually written on my yellow notes, or is that gone forever?

If you weren't using Time Machine or a similar backup routine, there is no way to do what you want.

  • Need to restore to earlier state

I have a new HP Touchsmat Laptop - bought two months ago - and I seem to need to restore it to its earlier state every week. At first it appeared to slow just after I installed <kaperrsky security software. So I uninstalled but then NOrton's trial that HP provided was expired so I bought it again. And I still need to restore otherwise Internet Explorer stops working and so do almost all my apps on Windows 8. Now, I read on the Microsoft Community that Windows Defender stops working with Norton so I need to uninstall and turn Defender on, which would mean that I bought two security packs - one recommended by the FNAC with the HP touchsmart - and the other recommended or pre-installed by HP, and I need to trash both to use Defender. But would that solve the problem of not having to restore every two weeks to ensure that all mmy apps and my browser keep working.
A second issue, HP offers one operating system backup but every time I try to do it, it just stops working. I have a USB external hard drive I was going to use to do it, but it does not recognize that I plugged something in to start the process. Do I have to buy CDs to do this. It says it will work with a USB if it has enough space. Please advise,
    And thanks in advance,

You cannot use two antivirus solutions at one time.  The first thing you need to do is go to the kaspersky website and find their uninstaller program. Download it and run it. Once that is done you can install your Norton Internet security product and activate it. Don't worry about Windows Defender not working. That is how it is supposed to work. Norton Internet Security will handle all of your protection issues, including providing a firewall. Leave Windows firewall off when Norton internet Security is installed.

Use DVDs, not CDs. CDs do not have enough capacity to be used. I suggest a well known brand such as Verbatim.  Your usb recovery media creation will not work if it is plugged into a USB 3.0 port. Don't use a port with an SS on it. Use usb 2.0 flash drive, not an external hard drive.

If you want to restore to an earlier state invoke the search charm and type in Windows Restore. Click on the icon. When Windows restore starts you can choose a restore point dated before all of the problems began. Don't forget to print out the email with the active Norton Internet security license key. you will need that. In my opiniion it is an excellent product. My previous HP product loan Envy17-3002ea notebook was delivered with it. It performed well for the entire time I had the notebook in my posession.

  • How do I reset Mountain Lion to an earlier state? I'm looking for a PC-style restore point.

I upgraded my MacBook Pro to Mountain Lion about a week ago. Soon after, I noticed a problem with Zinio Reader (I could not view my magazines any longer). I found instructions on Zinio's Web site to remove the reader and Adobe Air, then re-download and install the reader. Things seemed to go smoothly for a short while, but then my MacBook slowed to a crawl. It takes about five minutes just to log into my machine. I'm getting a lot of the beach ball action. Every action—even resizing a window—has become an agonizing chore. So now I'm looking for a way to set my machine back to an earlier state—something like Windows restore points.

To answer your Carbonite vs Time Machine (you should probably ask this in a new thread .)
I prefer Time Machine because it backs my system preferences, user account (if you have more than one), apps, and files.  It's also fast to restore.  4 hours max from reinstall of my osx (from Leopard to Lion) to Time Machine Restore.
Carbonite just back up your files.
I tried the free version of Carbonite once (5 gigs of storage), and didn't like it.
I also know people have a hard time restoring from Carbonite because it is so slow.  You should probably test that out sometimes.
One last problem I have with Carbonite is that if you delete a file on your mac, it will be deteled on the Carbonite within 7 day (something like that).  With Time Machine, as long as the drive is big enough, the file will be there (until the drive is full, than the oldest Time Machine backup will be deleted).
The advantage of Carbonite is that the files are not in your house.

  • Sync messed up my bookmarks, can I restore to an earlier version of my bookmarks?

a lot of my bookmarks that were previously nicely ordered in tabs, now have been moved to "Unsorted bookmarks". Besides that, a part of my bookmarks is missing. Can I restore my bookmarks collection to an earlier state?

Ok. I think I figured out where the contacts were on the phone. It appears to be on the tab selected on the phone versus the cloud. Going backwards on the "groups" tab on the phone, I was able to select "All Contacts" tab and it opened all of the contacts on the phone (partially satisfied). However, when I open the "All iCloud" tab on the phone it doesn't have all contacts that are in the "All Contacts" tab. Similarly, when I look at the cloud contacts on iCloud.com, it doesn't have the larger population of contacts ("All Contacts") on the phone itself.
That concerns me in that ALL of my contacts are not backed up to the cloud. How do I get my "All Contacts" tab to backup or merge to iCloud?

  • I did a system restore to a previous state now can't open I-Tunes

To cut a long story short my windows XP PC is having problems so I have done a system restore to 1 month ago. The problem is that I can't open I-Tunes now. First it said that I need to uninstall & reintsall ITunes because it can't open quick time, so I went to my program files and opened quicktime manually which opens ok (although it may be an older version). When I then try and open i-tunes it says that it can't read my library because it has been updated since, and nothing happens. If I then re-set my PC back to today then everything is fine again. I believe that I-tunes last updated itself on 3rd June, but my PC problems happened before that so I need to restore my PC to an earlier state.
I have over 3500 songs in my I-tunes libary, about 200 purchases and about 20 playlists and I am worried about losing them all if I re-install as suggested. Can anyone help me please????
Or is there a way to transfer my i-tunes library over manually so that it opens it ok?

+When I then try and open i-tunes it says that it can't read my library+
Use the directions from this article to find an itunes database that will work.
Surely one of the files in the *Previous iTunes Libraries* folder will work.

  • HT1414 I'm trying to restore from an earlier backup but my iphone only shows the most recent. I'm on Windows Vista and found the backup folder. If I delete the recent files, will it force the iPhone to backup from the next older file?  Why doesn't it show

I'm trying to recover a file and the app company said to restore from an earlier backup.  My iPhone only shows the most recent backup.  I've been searching the net for answers - I found the back up file and date sorted them (over 6mb of files).  How can I get my iPhone to restore from an earlier backup?
I am on Windows Vista so I don't have Time Machine.
I have backed up the backup folder so if I mess it up, I have it in a separate place.
Can I just delete all the files with todays date in that backup folder and have it forced to the next oldest date?
Why doesn't the iPhone show a list of the least several backups.
    Info:
    iPhone 4S
    Software version  5.1.1
Backed up to computer through iTunes (not iCloud)

As you backup the iPhone in iTunes, it overwrites the last backup. Files are kept as they are changed, so that would explain how you get different dates in your backup folder. The only backups that are saved and not overwritten are the ones done just prior to a restore. You do have the option to go back in time on a Windows computer, however depending on the last time you set a restore point in Windows, it could be back further than you are willing to go.

  • , I-tunes can no longer 'locate' my library , after a botched cut & paste attempt to back-up onto an external drive. Still syncing with i-Pod but playlists lost , podcasts no longer syncing, Can't play music .. how to restore back to original state .

I-tunes can no longer 'locate' my library , after a botched cut & paste attempt to back-up onto an external drive.Cant play any music as it "can't find" the library  Still syncing with i-Pod but playlists lost , podcasts no longer syncing.   How to restore back to original state . I have tried re-installing  - with no change

I do the same thing as you do...
My music is on an external drive as to not use up gigabytes of storage that need not be used for media.
There are a couple basic principles to iTunes that I believe you should know.
    1. iTunes is not a media storage program. It does not store your media "in iTunes". It simply is an organization tool for your media already on a hard disk.
    2. As iTunes is not a storage mechanism, it has no way to "know" whether or not the media that is listed is actually there. This is where the "design" of iTunes comes into play.
I like to think of iTunes as a bread-crumb trail. The "music" in iTunes, isn't actually there. The bread crumb is the location on the external hard drive.
If that bread crumb trail disappears (in this case the external drive you use). If said external drive is not plugged in, that bread crumb trail is not able to be followed. iTunes is "lost" and unable to find the media. The only way to remedy this is to place the media on your local drive.
To address your issue of the library. If you hold down shift, you can select your library on your external drive. It will be a file with an .itl extension. The folder name will be your external drive.
I go into edit > preferences > advanced and set my library to the correct location. Make sure you check the box "Copy to iTunes Folder when importing" (or whatever it says).
You can't fix the issue of iTunes not seeing the media if your drive is unplugged unless you physically move the content to your OS HDD...Or any other HDD you use.

    Hi chuckrabaw,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like the iPhone is searchiong for a network. It looks like you have already done some troubleshooting. There are a few steps listed in this article you did not mention trying, they may be able to help the issue.

  • When I try to instal latest version of iTunes onto my computer I get error messages, and then the only way for me to access iTunes is to do a System Restore to and earlier restore point

When I try to install the latest version of iTunes, during the installation I get error messages saying that a program is trying to change registry and the installation is stopped.
After this happens the only way that I can open iTunes is to do a 'system restore' to an earlier time.
Has anyone else experienced this and can you help?

Could you please post the exact text of the error message or provide a screenshot?
There is advice on issues with the update at  Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates. One of the entries in the further information section refers to a possible registry permissions problem which might be what you are seeing.

  • Can be done restore from an earlier backup if the backup was deleted?

can be done restore from an earlier backup if the backup was deleted? restoring from backup is lost application

No, you cannot restore from a deleted backup, because the backup is deleted. It therefore no longer exists.
Just re-download the lost app from the AppStore.

  • HT1414 How do I restore from an earlier icloud backup that is not showing up for my ipad?

How do I restore from an earlier icloud backup that is not showing up for my ipad?

You can't.  Usually you have only the most recent backup to choose from (I do).  Some users has said they get 3 to choose from (this is the max as stated in Apple literature).  You can't go back further than that.
The usual advice is that all photos should be synced to a computer (too many users have lost some/all their photos doing a restore - don't trust them solely to icloud).  If you've been doing that, you can find them on your computer.

  • I was having ios 4.3 and decided to upgrade to ios 5 and in doing so I lost all my apps despite I restored from my earlier back up. The itunes I've backed up is different from the itunes I have used to upgrade-..

I was having ios 4.3 and decided to upgrade to ios 5 and in doing so I lost all my apps despite I restored from my earlier back up. The itunes I’ve backed up is different from the itunes I have used to upgrade….. I was wondering if I can get back my apps that were purchased using different apple ID (not mine). Since I am in Ethiopia doesn’t even have the chance to buy it again. I have searched it in my computer/c/user/adminstrator….but couldn’t find it. Anyone p/l help

When I updated my iPhone to IOS 5, I did it from my MB Air, when my iPhone's "home" is my work 27" iMac. I figured I could just download the new OS at home where internet is fast and then sync at office and be done.
WRONG!!!  So, like others here, all my apps were "gone."
Following some of what I read above, I did the following and now all my apps that I purchased in the past are downloading to my 27".
In iTunes I went to Purchased, under "Store" in left column of iTunes.
Then at the bottom of the Purchased screen was something like Download all apps, borrom right (sorry, cant see it now, its downloading all of them).  Once I hit that, I could see all my apps and it looks like they are all coming back.
Now all I have to do is put them all like I had them before, folders, etc.  That will be a pain BUT at least I have all of them.

  • How to restore slide to original state?

    Hello,
Is there a quick way to restore original state of a slide?
In my project, slide changes dramatically after user's actions (a lot of objects are hiding and showing). When user returns to that certain slide through custom menu, it looks exactly the way he left it.
But I would like the slide to look "brand new", with all the posible actions untouched and ready to be re-explored.
I relise that one way is writing "mirrored" advanced actions but this is very time-consuming method, considering the size of a project.
Is there any quicker way? Like a designated action or command for restoring slide's original state?

There is no standard function to achieve this.  There are too many ways a Captivate author might have set up their interaction.  Having some function that reset all variables to default settings would be a dangerous thing to use in a course module.
If you have built this interaction, then you should understand how it works and what would need to be reset for a new attempt on the same slide.  It's just part of creating interactions that you (the designer) needs to allow for this requirement.
