Restore data from Time Machine to iMac just repaired

My husband's iMac has just come back from having new RAM fitted.  It is essentially an empty machine.  I finally found the backup in Time Machine although it was "hidden"  Do I now use disk utility to restore the data?  I had the screen up and currently am asking it to replace Macintosh HD with iMac.sparsebundle  Is that right?

OK so I used Migration Assistant once I knew where the old back was. Why don't all backups show when you go into Time Capsule? Wouldn't that be easier?

  • Re-install OS X and restore data from Time Machine on iMac

I have a mid-2010 iMac with 500 GB internal hard drive and OS X 10.10.3.  I also use an external 1T hard drive for additional storage.  Total usage of both these drives is 800G.  I have another external 2T hard drive that I use for Time Machine.  I want to replace the 500G internal drive with a 1T internal drive.  The new hard drive will be replaced by a local computer store (MicroCenter) and I intend on re-installing OS X and then restoring all the applications and data from the Time Machine backup from both the 500G internal and 1T external to the new 1T internal.
Please advise on the best way to do this.

  • HT201250 Circle and cross through iTunes icon afte the seagate hard drive replaced and restored data from time machine backup.

Circle and cross through iTunes icon: had the seagate hard drive replaced and restored data from time machine backup. Why does the iTunes icon have a circle and cross through it? As though incomplete? tried everything and still Circle and cross through iTunes icon.

No it isn't something you'd find on the computer, it has to be custom installed from the 10.6 installer disc or Software Update if it wasn't before.  It allows you to use older PowerPC applications on your Mac.   On the other hand double check the version of iTunes you have does not require 10.7 minimum either.

  • HT201250 (1) Where is the "Time Machine menu" and the choice to "Enter Time Machine" (mentioned in the "Restoring data from Time Machine backups" section)?

    1) Where do I find the "Time Machine menu" and the choice to "Enter Time Machine" (as mentioned in the "Restoring data from Time Machine backups" section in the Mac Support article "Mac Basics: Time Machine")?
    2) How would I restore e.g. a particular photo from a backup I made with Time Machine? I can see how this is done with Word documents, but can't see how to do it with photos?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    1. The Time Machine icon is on the menu bar.
    2. If you want to do that with individual photos, it's the same way as for documents. If you want to do it with iPhoto, you have to restore the whole iPhoto library, not only one photo

  • Just reinstalled software and migrated data from Time Machine, now iMac does not recognize printer or camera

Under the direction of Apple Support, I recently erased my iMac (Intel) hard drive, reinstalled and updated software and migrated data from an external hard drive via Time Machine.
Now, after clicking on "PRINT", the print dialog box says "printing" then says "no pages found", and finally says "stopped"; and when I plug in my camera to download photos, the camera is not recognized.  Both printer and camera are connected via USB.
I checked connections, verified printing and iPhoto preferences, turned printer off then on again, unplugged and replugged USB connections, and checked and followed directions in the Help menu.

Thanks very much, I'd just tried rkaufmann87's suggestion and entered "This solved my question" when your suggestion popped up—you deserve a "This solved my question" too, though I saw only an option for "This helped me".
Before I got rkaufmann87's suggestion, I repaired disk permissions and that resolved the camera problem.  Both of you nailed the solution.
    Thanks again!

  • HDD fails again after restoring data from Time Machine?

    Hello,
I will try to explain my case and end with a question that maybe someone will be able to answer (I hope..):
    1. My imac started to run very slow and every 2 minutes or less appeared the coloured wheel for some secs. While the wheel was visible, the Os and all the apps running freezed.
    2. Firstly I thought it was a software problem, but after some "testing" I started thinking on a hard drive failure or similar.
    3. I did a disk verification whith the Disk Utility and it failed.
    4. Panic!
    5. I booted from the instalation DVD and tried to repair the hard drive with the Disk Utility.
    6. Nothing..
    7. I erased my HDD partition and created a new one.
    8. I used the DVD to install again all the Os X.
    9. After the installation all seemed ok. The HDD passed the verification and the spining coloured wheel appeared only when it should.
    10. I restored my data, apps, etc from my Time Machine HDD using the Migration Assistent utility.
    11. After the restore, the problems with the HDD reappeared.
Do you think Time Machine can store damaged files and after a restore make a healthy disk (only with the Os X installed) crash?
    Has anyone experienced the same?
    Thank you!

Sounds like the hard drive might be starting to fail.

  • How Do You Restore Data From Time Machine Backup?

    Hi
In my case I have a ORIGINAL Leopard Disc but ONLY an UPGRADE Snow Leopard disc. I'm installing a new hard drive in my Snow Leopard macbook pro and I have been using time machine for my backups. Am I correct in thinking I need to reinstall Leopard on the new drive THEN upgrade to Snow Leopard THEN use Time Machine to restore my data from the old drive? Seems a bit time consuming but I guess it's more of a fresh install?
    Many Thanks
    Jeff

    Hi Jeff,
If you want the iLife package that came with Leopard, yes, that will work. If not, just need the SL installation before TM restore.
If you have a HD available, the fastest/easiest would be to clone your existing internal to it, then install new HD and format/partition it, then clone back to it.

  • Restoring data from Time Machine to a replacement secondary drive

Hi all.  I have a Mac Pro with 4 drives installed - one as a system drive, the others for storing project data, music sample libraries etc.  They are all routinely backed up by Time Machine to a large external drive.  One of the library drives has failed and I am trying to restore it to a newly insatlled drive.  I have read as much info as I can find online, but so far, I am not having much success restoring the data.
I have named the new drive the same as the previous drive, navigated to the restore point I think is appropriate and right clicked to choose the new drive as a destination.  When doing this, it starts to copy all the items but then flags up that I may need my admin password to continue for certain items.  It doesn't matter if I check the box to say 'apply to all' or just do them each separately, I put my password in and it just copies over the top level folder without any of the contents.
I have opened the TM backup drive and navigated to the drive to copy the files over manually, but for some folders/items, I get a message saying 'the operation cannot be completed because I don't have permission to access'.  This is fast becoming a tedious experience and not really what I expected from Apple's backup solution.
    Any assistance gratefully appreciated.

I don't know whether this procedure works in 10.6. I've only tested it in 10.8
Turn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane. Leave the window open.
Navigate in the Finder to your backup disk, and then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the top level of the volume. If you back up over a network, you'll first have to mount the disk image file containing your backups by double-clicking it. Descend into the folder until you see the snapshots, which are represented by folders with a name that begins with the date of the snapshot. Find the one you want to restore from. There's a link named "Latest" representing the most recent snapshot. Use that one, if possible. Otherwise, you'll have to remember the date of the snapshot you choose.
Inside the snapshot folder is a folder hierarchy like the one on the source disk. Find one of the items you can't restore and select it. Open the Info dialog for the selected item. In the Sharing & Permissions section, you may see an entry in the access list that shows "Fetching…" in the Name column. If so, click the lock icon in the lower right corner of the dialog and authenticate. Then delete the "Fetching…" item from the icon list. Click the gear icon below the list and select Apply to enclosed items from the popup menu.
Now you should be able either to copy the item in the Finder or to restore it in the time-travel view. If you use the time-travel view, be sure to select the snapshot you just modified. If successful, repeat the operation with the other items you were unable to restore. You can select multiple items in the Finder and open a single Info dialog for all of them by pressing the key combination option-command-I.
When you're done, turn TM back ON and close its preference pane.

  • Do I need to reinstall software prior to restoring data from time machine?

I only have working files backed up via time machine.  Do I need to reinstall all software PRIOR to restoring from my time machine backup?

I may have misunderstood your question. But, if you have an application such as Photoshop or Word, (from what you say neither of which are backed up by TM) and their files are backed up (ie., Photoshop image files and Word text files), I see no reason why you cannot restore individual Photoshop and Word files. I have done that by choosing "Enter Time Machine", navigating back in time to the desired file and pressing the big "Restore" button at TM's window, bottom right. I have never needed to restore the parent applications.

What exactly are you referring to?   Are the menus or templates for Pages in a different language?  Does something strange appear on the screen when you type?
Could you perhaps use the Camera icon here to post a screenshot of what you are seeing?
To make sure you have the right keyboard, go to system preferences/language & text/input sources and make sure that only the box for US or British is checked (and that the box for French or German or anything else is not checked).

Twas quite a hassle if I am honest which was eventually resolved but I don't feel qualified to help anyone through the process as it required a trip to my local apple store and a genius bar appointment.
Personally, I would do anything like moving pictures out of folders etc. Certainly not creating a new users. i don't think that is an elegant solution
Try the following which MAY just about rescue the situation for you but if they don't work you may have to do something more drastic.
    (1) Holding down Cmd & Alt at the same time, start iPhoto by clicking on the iPhoto icon. From the resulting menu choose Rebuild photo library by selecting all available options given to you and then pressing REBUILD!
    If that doesn't work
    (2) Fire up Utilities. Go to migration assistant. Chose 'From another Time machine back-up'. Open the 'Users' option that comes up next and from there select Pictures, then uncheck everything else like Applications etc (you don't want to do a full migration of everything) and click go.
If that doesn't work, take a deep breath and this step is rather complicated but it worked for me. First of all close iPhoto! Then go to new Finder window.
From the Finder window choose Pictures, then iPhoto library, press CMD and the letter i. It brings up a new window. Go to Sharing & permissions. From there select the padlock to unlock settings. and then select User account, then press the 'cog' icon next to +/- abd choose Apply to enclosed items.
This may take a while. Once completed, re-open iPhoto.
And that should (I stress should) cure it.
    Good luck.
