Restore display resolution without disk

I was trying to get monitor display to show on a screen using digital projector. Nothing worked so I tried adjusting display resolution. This partially worked but the image was not centered. So I selected a different resolution and the screen went black. Now I can't return to the original resolution because the monitor screen is blsck and I can't select anything. Is there something on the key board I can do to undo or return display settings to default?

Hi I have a macbook with snow leopard on it, and I recently tried to restore it with the disk until the superdrive litterally carved grooves into the disk. So I know I can purcahse replacement disks, but the disk drive doesn't work, so what do I do now? Is there any way I can do it without the disk, or will I have to drop 100 dollars into a disc drive and a new replacement disk? I would really prefer not to so any help is appreciated.

How to change external display resolution WITHOUT clicking "CONFIRM"?

I have a somewhat unusual situation. My MacBook laptop is actually now a ModBook (a pen-tablet computer), and as such I no longer have a trackpad attached to it. All of my inputs are via the stylus, tapping directly on the built-in display.
This works perfectly fine, except when I need to give presentations on an LCD projector (which is quite often lately). I like to use the projector as an external monitor, so that I can run the Keynote presentation on it while using my laptop screen as the presenter's display, with the upcoming slide, etc. If the projector doesn't give me an ideal native display option (sometimes, the aspect ratio for the 3 or 4 resolutions available in the Displays drop-down in the menubar turn out to be stretched or squeezed), then I, naturally, have to open the Display System Preferences and try out different resolutions.
The problem is, since my stylus only interacts by clicking directly on the built-in-display, I have no way of moving the cursor over to the external display when the dialog box with the "Click here to confirm change/You have 15 seconds..." message appears. So I can never click it ... so I can never confirm the new settings.
The workarounds I've used so far are:
- Mirror displays (not ideal, as I need the presenter preview of the next slide)
- borrow a mouse from someone (usually from a Windows desktop, frankly) and plug that in to briefly mouse over and click the confirm button
I'd love to find a software workaround that allows me to NOT mirror displays and also doesn't require me to carry around a mouse all the time (my laptop bag is already overstuffed...).

Display resolution changes during sleep

This does not look quite like anything I've seen here already. Mid-2010 Mac Mini, OS X 10.9.2, Acer V173 monitor with 1280 x 1024 maximum resolution, connected via Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter (because the monitor has only a VGA input). Resolution is set at 1280 x 1024. I have Display Menu installed and the icon sits at the top in the menu bar.
Display goes to sleep when there is no user activity for a few minutes (because although the display doesn't use much power it's still against my nature to waste any). I wake it up by hitting a non-printing key such as control, option, command, or all three together. Often as not, the display wakes up in a lower resolution. I can usually restore it to 1280 x 1024 by using Display Menu, but then I also have to resize some of the windows that have been shrunk by the lower resolution.
I don't want the display resolution to change. I tried resetting NVRAM and repairing file permissions, no help.
Why does the display resolution change without my knowledge and consent? More to the point, how can I keep it from doing that?

Another helpful hint, again I forget where on this discussion board I saw it, is that holding down the Option key while hitting the Scaled button in Display Preferences gives a wider choice of resolutions. Ordinarily the only resolution option is 1280x1024, but the Option key brings up others, including 1280x960.
On the theory that Apple doesn't like the 5:4 aspect ratio of the native 1280x1024 resolution of the monitor, I set the monitor resolution to 1280x960 yesterday (June 23). There's a little distortion from using a 4:3 aspect ratio on a physically 5:4 monitor, but if two weeks go by (July 7) without the resolution going bad, I will try a new (or used) monitor.
The next question is, would Apple dislike a wide screen aspect ratio? If it likes 16:9, would it dislike 16:10? With my hardware and OS, and a 1080p HDTV/monitor connected with an HDMI cable, would the resolution stay put?

External display resolution changes after returning from display sleep

I often use an external display as a second screen with my Macbook Pro (OS X 10.8.2) However, when I return to the computer after the display has gone to sleep, the external display resolution changes when the display reappears. Then I have to go into System Preferences > Display and "Detect Displays" in order to return the external display to the proper resolution.
Does anybody know of a way for me to avoid having to do this every time my display sleeps?

I have the exact same problem.
I found the key combination ⌘ alt F2 also restores the proper resolution on both displays, however it's still a bit annoying

Macbook Pro, how to reset invalid external display resolution?

Hi there. I have a question about the external display configuration.
I recently connected my 2011 Macbook Pro 13" (10.8.2 Mountain Lion) to an external HD-TV using Thunderbolt to VGA adapter. After connecting the TV had 1920x1200 resolution which made the text and everything look very tiny. So I thought I'd lower the resolution a bit. But then I messed up and accidentally changed the resolution and refresh rate for the external display to one that wasn't supported. So the TV went black and gave an error about an invalid resolution. At the same time, on my Macbook screen I had only the background image and display settings dialog. No mouse cursor, no menu bar, no dock etc. So I couldn't do anything.
I disconnected the Thunderbolt adapter and got my Macbook screen back to normal, but when I plugged it in again, the same thing happened. Invalid resolution on TV, just background image and display settings on Macbook screen.
Now, this was just before I was going to give a presentation and it resulted in a very awkward situation with me franticly re-plugging the Thunderbolt adapter and looking just completely clueless In the end I had to borrow my colleague's laptop.
So my question is: when this happens, is there a way I can reset / clear the external display settings back to defaults? They are obviously saved somewhere since replugging the Thunderbolt adapter didn't give me back my original resolution.

Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

How to restore Ipod database without iTunes?

Hi,
My iPod mini is visible to any aplication except iTunes. I have tried all it sugested on the manuals to fix it and nothing worked.
Others applications like RealPlayer and Anapod can see that the iPod is connect but can´t show its content. RealPlayer says that the database file doesn´t exist or is corrupted.
The only way I can see my files is accessing the iPod-Control directory using windows.
If I disconect it from the Pc I can´t see the musics that are on it.
I have made a copy of the songs that were on it and now I want to know how to restore it without use iTunes, because nothing makes iTunes see it.
Is there any update link that still work on apple website, so I don´t need to use iTunes?

The only way I can see the iPod is runing the diadnosis under the help menu. Nothing have worked to make it be showed as device.

Internal vs. External Display Resolution

Hi,
I just purchased a KVM switch by IO Gear Model GCS1782. Hooked up my Mac Book Pro 15 inch 2.16 Ghz with DVI Dual Link and Mac Mini Power PC with DVI single link.
The KVM is working perfectly. The Mac Mini Display resolution is 1680x1050 as normal. The MBP Color LCD is 1440x900 as normal.
Question: Why does the display on the internal display of the MBP look crisper than the Cinema Display? The CD looks like a lo res VGA monitor.

Okay everybody...something funny happened this morning.
Last night I put my MBP to sleep by using "Insomnia" and woke it up this morning and to my surprise, the resolution is matched. No more fuzziness. I have the display icon on the title bar which shows the only one display, only the ACD at 1680x1050. Yesterday it showed two displays because I was mirroring.
Yesterday morning I hooked up a new KVM (I/O Gear Model GCS1782) and discovered video display problems (not from the KVM). From 10:30 AM to 2:45 PM I called IO Gear support, Apple Sale Support (x2), Apple Technical Support (x2), and continuously scoured these forum reading and posting.
Yesterday:
1. Could not close lid of MBP because ACD would go black. (Solution: Insomnia)
2. Could not get MBP LCD display be crisp on the external ACD (Solution: Insomnia)
3. Mirrored the MBP causing the ACD to use a lower resolution (Solution: Insomnia)
Today, all is well.
I think it had to do with the MBP sleep mode or ????. I am not positive on what exactly happened to get the max resolution. I am just a wee bit concerned that it will happen again because I have to disconnect the MBP tomorrow and reconnect without the confidence I can get it to work. One thing for sure, I won't mirror any longer.
Lessons Learned:
1. No one person is proficient with using external displays on MBP. The pieces of information that I needed were either scattered and fragmented or just not available.
2. The people at Apple is nice, helpful, and well meaning. But this particular situation revealed a lack of technical cohesion in its communication.
I want to thank all the good people who help me along this journey.

New Display Resolution

I can't believe I'm asking this but since the 8600MT supports the higher resolution option, is that only possible through applications? I dont even see it as an option under the display tab.
Also does anyone know of a gpu clock frequency display program? I love how nividia provides no tools for mac users that I know of.

Resolution independence refers to, and will only affect, the way the OS uses the number of pixels displayed on screen. It will not affect anything about the display itself, or what goes on between the GPU and the display.
As display resolutions have gone higher and higher, with display size remaining the same (for example, a 17" MBP with a display resolution of 1920 X 1200), the fact that the number of pixels being packed into the same physical space has gone up considerably. This presents a problem for OSs that have held to the old convention that 1" = 72 pixels, and vice versa. This is the 72 DPI convention.
To this point, everything "graphic" in nature about computing relies on this convention. Fonts, photos, web pages, etc., etc. are all rendered accordingly. A photo that measures 576 X 720 pixels is considered to physically measure 8" X 10". Text, based on this 72 DPI convention, is rendered quite small even on a 17" display with a resolution of 1680 X 1050 (my MBP). In spite of the fact that this smaller text is actually sharper, because the pixels are "finer," there are many complaints that it is too small.
Resolution independence does away with the 72 DPI convention, thereby allowing the OS to take full advantage of higher-resolution displays without making the GUI "miniaturized." Text will still be thought of, and rendered, at 72 DPI, but a "dot" and a "pixel" will not have to equate; one "dot" could be comprised of 4 pixels, for example.

Odd Display Resolution

1280 x 800. Is this the default display resolution for the MacBook? Sorry for this trivial question, but I am in a hotel room using the WiFi here and one of the web-pages I customarily view looks different. Of course this is really rather minor, but on account of jet lag, I am wide awake and this is somewhat worrying me. Is it possible that a display resolution can fluctuate without me adjusting it manually? The news web-page I check daily, is never displayed with a scroll bar at the bottom. Now, however it's there, and I am wondering if the resolution setting somehow got changed. So what is the standard one, anyway?

The horizontal scroll bar will show up in any application, including Finder windows, anytime there is more to be presented horizontally than the width of the current window allows. It could be that the width of the content of that Globe site you reference is right on the edge of being too wide for a full width browser window on your MacBook. Accounting for slight differences in how information is rendered between the two browsers, Safari and Firefox, Safari is pushing it over the edge and the horizontal scroll bar appears automatically as it should. I imagine the scroll amount has very little stroke or range to it, correct? Like maybe just a few pixels?

Why is there no restore to time capsule disk?

It's pretty clear from the previous discussions that, although there's a clear way to backup a Time Capsule's disk via the Airport Utility "Archive Disk ...", there's no easy way to restore a time capsule's disk from an archive. This lack of restore capability appears to be by design.
Anyone know what the reasoning is for not have a restore time capsule's disk from archive capability? What's the use case or use cases that the "Archive Disk ..." functionality in Airport Utility is designed to?

The reason Apple does what it does is never revealed. It is as it is.. your role is not to ask why.. but to ask how to do it the way Apple has designed.
Network drive is not easy to restore since you do not have console access or any access to the actual disk utility in the TC itself. You cannot do some things remotely without it.. and Apple do not want you to have that level of control.
Archive is designed so you can backup a full TC (full of TM backups), so you can wipe it and start over. TM needs a lot of space to function effectively. But if you want your old backups you can read them off the archive disk.
And BTW you can restore the items to the TC.. but you do it manually.. ie you plug the USB drive into your computer.. select the items you wish to restore and simply copy them back.

Problems with the display resolution on Android

We have a problem with the display resolution on our Google Nexus 7 (2013) and our Multi-Folio-App. If we watch an article inside our published Multi-Folio-App, the article does not use the full screen of the tablet. But when I look the article inside the content viewer, it use the full screen of the tablet. For your information: We use the resolution of 1280 x 800 and the tablet has the highest resolution of 1920 x 1200.
However, under iOS it works without problems. We use the iPad 4 (2048 x 1536) with the article resolution of 1024 x 720. Do you have any idea what we can do? Under this post, you can find two screenshots which discribe the problem.

In previous releases, smaller renditions in Android apps were not scaled up, causing both letterboxing and pillarboxing. With v28 AIR-based Android apps, smaller renditions are now scaled up proportionally.

Can you restore an iPod using Disk Utility?

I put a new hard drive in my 1st gen iPod.
It still shows up in iTunes and music can be transferred over, but when disconnected the iPod shows a folder and exclamation mark so I can't navigate to / listen to any music.
As it's first gen ipod I can't get it to restore or update via iTunes - no options show up to restore or update the software.
Is there any other way I can restore or update the iPod - via disk utility or some other means?
I do have a back up of all the original files that were on the iPod hard drive before I swapped it over.

Hi - thanks, but unless I'm reading the article wrong that won't work for me because you need to use iTunes to restore the iPod and I can't do this - as it's a 1st gen iPod it will only sync with an old version of iTunes and the 'update' and 'restore' tabs don't appear.
So, I'm looking for a way to restore the iPod without having to use iTunes.

Where did display resolutions go?

I just updated from 10.7.3 to to 10.7.4 on intel 24" iMac. In 10.7.3, I had a choice of 12 different display resolutions. In 10.7.4, I have 2 - neither of which I find acceptable, so I reintalled 10.7.3. Where did my choices go?
And how do I contact Apple directly without having to pay to tell them there is a problem with their update?
I was forced to switch to Lion so I could keep my contacts and calendars synced with all my Apple devices. Frankly, I've been an Apple user all the way back to the IIe. I don't like Lion. I don't like being forced to upgrade - if those items still sync with Windows XP, why can't they in Snow Leopard? I don't like that there is no easy way to contact Apple support about this. I don't like the snooty and less than helpful personel at my local Apple Store. Makes me wonder why I'm still an Apple user.

Can I restore OSX to a disk, from a backup that's on the same disk?

I have a Powermac G5 Quad, that has two internal drives. (a 250gb system drive, and a 500gb spare).
Both drives are now out of space. I want to purchase a 1TB drive to replace the 250 system drive.
Tell me if this plan makes any sense:
1. Remove the 500gb spare drive.
2. Install the 1 TB drive, format, & use it as the Time Machine backup disk for the system drive.
3. Once the backup is complete, Remove the 250gb system drive.
4. Boot to the 10.5 Install DVD, and select "restore from backup"
5. Use the Backup on the 1 TB Drive, to install the OS on the same disk.
It's step # 5 that I'm not sure will work. Can I install an OS to a disk, from a backup that's on the same disk?

Sorry it took me so long. I had a baby. Anyway, here's how it went down:
I attempted to use the disk utility to "Clone" the original 250gb system disk to the new 1tb Hard drive.
It did not work. Tried booting to the Leopard install disk, and doing it from there, no dice.
So, I went ahead and created 2 partitions on the new 1TB disk. One I called "Time Machine" and it was 300 gigs. The other I called "New System Disk".
I booted to the "Old" System disk, and set up Time Machine to back-up to the "Time Machine" partition. It took 5 hours to back up 250 gigs, but it worked.
I then booted to the 10.5 Install DVD. one of the utilities you can use is "Install from Time Machine Backup" This worked. Took about 5 hours to copy everything to the new "New System Disk".
When that was done, I removed the old system disk. It booted to the new system disk without any trouble.
I was now stuck with a "Time Machine" partition that I did not want. It was EXTRAORDINARILY EASY to delete that partition, then re-size the other one so it took up the entire 1 Terabyte of available space.
So, the answer to the question is: Yes, you can use Time Machine to restore to the same disk, provided that the disk is using two partitions.
