Restore DVD-RW's RW capability after a burn with iDVD

I recently burned a very simple video from an iMovie project onto a DVD-RW with iDVD for a class project. The DVD-RW had a few files on it that I transferred to my hard drive so that I could temporarily use the DVD for the video. iDVD deleted all of the files at my request to make a disc able to be read by a regular DVD player.
Everything worked fine until I tried to delete the video from the DVD-RW and restore the files I originally had on it. I attempted to move all of the information I had burned onto the DVD to the trash, only to discover that the folder "VIDEO_TS" was read only. Further the entire DVD had been changed to "Read only." Thus, it seems that burning the movie from iMovie onto the DVD-RW by means of iDVD somehow altered my DVD from a DVD-RW to a DVD-R.
I simply want to restore my DVD-RW's Re-Writing capabilities. Is there anyway to do this?

Q: I simply want to restore my DVD-RW's Re-Writing capabilities. Is there anyway to do this?
A: Yes, there is a way. Maybe even a couple of ways at least. You can use apple's disc utility (applications > utilities > disc utility > erase). Roxio Toast will also work to erase DVD-RW.

  • Disc burned with iDVD will not play in DVD player only on MAC

I used iMovie to create a movie and then shared it with iDVD. I successfully burned the DVD through iDVD but it will not play on my DVD player. It plays fine on the iMac. It is in UDF format. After reading through posts, I saved the file as a disk image and then burned through Disk Utility. This plays fine but I would really rather burn the disc directly from iDVD. Any ideas why the DVD player says "This type of disc cannot be played"?

Media quality affects the burn errors on a disc. Computer players tend to have better error correction (to preserve digital data) - set-top DVD players tend to have poorer error correction since the are designed to play commercial, stamped DVDs with low error rates.

  • Poor image quality after burning with idvd

I used Final Cut Express to make a 45min movie. When I preview the finished product as a Quicktime file it looks great. BUT when I burn it with idvd, the quality of the video is terrible! Jagged diagonal lines, some color loss, some dancing pixels,...
I have been trying to find the solution to this problem for days on end, I have burned about 20 dvd's now, all in different settings and so on, but the quality is not improved.
First I thought it was my tv, but then I put the dvd in my mac and compared the same scene from my quicktime file with the scene on the dvd, and the difference in quality is staggering! For instance, diagonal white road markings are crisp on the quicktime file, but jagged on the dvd.
What is idvd doing with my movie????? Help me!

My Final Cut Express movie (.mov file) is crisp, and interlaced.
You are missing the point - your CRISP FCE movie is mpg-2 compressed by iDVD - that's what DVDs are - mpg-2 compressed video content. Unfortunately, mpg-2 is a very low quality CODEC compared to modern CODECs like h.264.
The best image quality out of iDVD will result in using the 'Best Performance' mode of encoding - this requires your content be under 60 minutes for a single-layer disc.
'Best Performance' encoding uses fixed bit-rate encoding that produces a DVD with about as high playback bit-rate as can be supported by set-top DVD players.
You have three choices: (1) live with the mpg-2 compression on a DVD because you can't do anything about it, (2) use the h.264 CODEC out of FCE and create a data DVD with the file that can be played back in computers, (3) make a Blu-ray disc if you have the equipment and buy the software.

  • DVD problem burning with iDVD..... PLEASE HELP ME !

    hello,
i have a big problem during burning a dvd of a presentation of pictures from iphoto by idvd.
When the burning processing is almost finish i get this error:
    "error during formatting process"
I never had this kind of problem previously,so i don't konw what's going on!
I am really worrie about it(i tried to change label of dvd,and i have 125 Gb free in my mac)
    Please,anybody can help me?
    thank you
    alessandro

    HI,
First, you tried different labels? I take this to mean you tried different media? Verbatim, Maxell to name just a few might be good.
    Second... try repairing disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
Next, please click My Settings on the right side of this window and tell us which Mac you have. The more details you provide, the easier to help you. Your profile indicates you are running 10.5 but you posted in the Tiger forum 10.4.. please update your profile.

  • Using an external dual layer DVD burner with iDVD??

I created a 3 hour iDVD file on a dual 2.0 G5 desktop with a dual layer DVD Superdrive. I have since migrated to a MacBook Pro. Now, when I open the iDVD file, it says there is no DL Superdrive on my system and that it will convert the file to single layer or something like that, with the option to cancel or proceed. If I purchase an external DL DVD burner will iDVD detect it and allow me to continue working with the file?? Or do I have to get a whole other Mac with a DL Superdrive (iMac or 17" MBP)?? The error specifically stated 'Superdrive', so I am not sure if just an external DL will work. Thanks for any help.

Sorry to have to post this here, but your topic "How can I see the bitrate while playing a DVD?" in the DVD SP forum.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=325516
has been archived and no one can reply to it.
Thank you so much. Using VLC 0.8.5 to view bitrate was an excellent discovery for those who don't have the cash to buy the DigiGami poducts.
Perhaps you should re-open a new topic for others to respond to.

  • Choppy footage on DVD, after perfect burn in iDVD

    Hello,
I've just got done with a documentary on my local Parkour Group. I've finished Editing the piece and I have exported it into iDVD, here comes the problems, after burning the video at a burn speed of 1x with Professional Quality, my video on DVD turns out at some parts choppy. During these times, the video is being reversed with slow motion and desaturation. I've tried everything that may solve this problem but each DVD has the same verdict. These parts where they are choppy appear not to be in the preview in both iDVD and FCE, I had a friend download it to his computer (windows) and it played perfectly until he played it in his player for his TV, this hasn't happened to me before, my first video turned out great using the same technique.
    I am using:
    DVD-R (TDK)
    MacBook Pro '09 version
    Final Cut Express HD
I hope this can be solved quickly, I want to begin my next project! Help is greatly appreciated.

I have had the same problem when burning videos made with iMovie, videos play via iTunes and Quicktime just fine on the computer; but when i burn to disc (using various brands and types) the video comes out very choppy, as if it is skipping frames. The videos i'm doing are of lacrosse games so the choppyness is very obvious. I have only had problems burning these videos on my iMac since the release of Ilife'09. Videos from the previous season were not choppy at all. In the past version of iDvD I had to do something to encode the videos before they could be burned to disc by iDvD, but this step seems to be skipped now. I've found (for movies from iMovie) that you lose the choppyness if you burn it directly to the disc instead of going through iDvD... I guess I'm saying that I have no solution, but the same problem that you do.... you are not alone... Anyone with suggestions?

I Wonder if apple is aware of these issues lol

  • Cannot boot OEM Restore DVD

I am trying to restore my PB to its original state. When I boot from the Restore DVD (10.2.3), shows the grey screen with the Apple logo and the wheel bars, then the You-need-to-restart message in several languages comes up. Tried the double-clicking on the Install Mac OS X icon / Restart button and the Hold-down-C while restarting--same result. Removed added RAM--same. Reset PMU--same. Reset PRAM--same. Did the Hardware Test--all OK. But booting from the installed 10.3.9 is flawless. Short of sending it for repair, does anyone have any suggestion? Thanks!

  • No audio on dvd burned with idvd6

Relevant software: Mac OS 10.4.11, iMovie 6.0.3, iDvd 6.0.3
Problem: No audio on dvd burned with iDvd
What happened: Created movie in iMovie (audio and video fine). Shared to iDvd (audio and video fine on playback). Burned Dvd. No audio on dvd but video is fine.
    What I did:
    1. Saved as disc file. Opened with VLC and DVD Player. No audio, video fine.
    2. Deleted encoded assets in iDvd then 1 (above).
    3. Removed non-Apple extensions in Library/Quicktime. Then 2 and 1 (above).
I've read other discussions about this same issue and followed those recommendations as well as that in the article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303550.
Clearly I'm missing something. But, what is it? Anyone have any suggestions?

i too am having the same problems with iDVD 6.0.4. I just ended up wasting 5 hours of time burning these damned DVDs... what was really strange is that the first DVD I burned was a dual-layer, and I checked that one on a set-top DVD player and it worked fine. I then needed 5 more copies of the DVD, so I simply inserted a fresh dual-layer DVD into the drive at iDVD's prompt of 'Would you like to burn this disc again?'.
Assuming that they would all be fine since the first one was fine, I simply burned 5 more DVDs. Only now, checking them after I've wasted a godawful amount of time burning them, do I find that they're all f#$ked. Thanks apple.
Crap like this makes me steamed. My PC burning software doesn't have nearly the same simple, elegant interface as iDVD, but it also lacks this CATASRTOPHIC problem. I mean, dual layer DVDs are relatively pricey... so screw apple. i will be glad to go home to my PC after being forced to work with this junky, buggy software.

  • Dvd keeps ejecting during multiplexing and burning in idvd

Ok, I realize a lot of other people have had this problem and somehow managed to resolve it. I have done a lot of reading and experimenting but so far NOTHING has worked. So, to recount everything that I have tried and all the details to this problem:
First of all, I would like to mention that I have successfully burned a number of DVDs in idvd in the past. Then suddenly it just stopped working.
I have run a verify/ repair disk permissions. I have deleted all the idvd files off my computer, the .plist and preferences file, restarted, and reinstalled iDVD TWICE with a custom install. I have 500 gb of free space on my boot drive. I used a cleaning disc on my SuperDrive, and my regular DVD player. I switched to a better brand of blank dvd. I am now using Sony DVD-r, 4.7 gb discs although memorex DVD+r always worked just fine before. The project I am burning fits on the disc. I am not using chapters. I tried turning on the tv safe area and made sure everything was inside it, but still the same problem. I tried booting up in safe-mode then restarting. Still, same issue. I am burning at 2x speed, using professional quality setting. The project preview works just fine. It goes through the whole idvd process just fine, until the burning and multiplexing. After burning about 10 minutes of the project, the disc ejects suddenly. Idvd says "done" but then at the bottom it says "about one minute left" and the little burning wheel symbol is still spinning. The disc plays fine in my DVD player till about ten minutes in, then freezes and eventually goes back to the main menu. I can see on the disc that it is only partially burned.
Oh, and I have also tried saving to a disc image and burning with toast and disc utility. Once, this actually did work with toast and resulted in a playable DVD. The weird part was that I still got the error sense key message in toast and thought I had made another coaster, but when I tested the DVD it worked fine in my regular dvd player only (it was not readable in my xbox or ps2). Since that one fluke, however, it hasn't been successful. Disk utility did not work for burning the disc image. I am absolutely at a loss here...somebody PLEASE help.

I believe I have finally fixed the problem but I am going to post what I went through just in case someone else ever runs into these same issues, maybe I can save them some time. I went through so much troubleshooting and each problem solved seemed to result in new problems, so, let me recap.
First, computer was working fine. Burned a DVD, it worked. Then a few days later, tried to burn another DVD. It didn't work. I tried different brands of discs, different types of discs, (-r and +r) sometimes there was a partial burn, sometimes no luck at all and an unusable, unplayable disc. The disc would eject early during the burning phase, giving me simultaneous contradictory messages that it was both "done" and had " about one minute left".
I tried running a verify/ repair disk permissions. Everything came out fine, but still no burned DVDs. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling idvd. I tried a cleaning disc. Still no go. Sometimes idvd would crash or freeze on me or give me error messages. Result varied depending on what i tried, but were never good.
Then I bought an external drive and tried saving my DVD project as a disc image and burning with toast as many people have suggested. This worked! So, I concluded that my SuperDrive was faulty but I'm not going to bother getting it replaced right now because the external works just fine. I thought my problem was finally solved, but then...
I noticed that upon restarting, my computer would display a white-gray screen as is normal, with the familiar apple symbol, but now a new addition: a very annoying loading bar that took 5-10 minutes to load. Unacceptable!!! Also, I noticed shortly after that iTunes did not work. It wouldn't even open, but crashed due to an error and asked if it could send a report. I tried deleting and uninstalling iTunes but that didn't work.
I ran another verify disc permissions with disc utility, and I got a very bad error message. It said there were errors on the drive and it could not be repaired and it said I needed to start up from the Mac OS X install disc and use disc utility to repair the volume. Problem with that...my install disc says it can't install on this computer. I soon learned from one (finally) helpful apple support guy that the reason for this was that I am running snow leopard 10.6.8 and the disc that came with my computer was for 10.5.2 or something.
On a side note: I had called apple support before and specifically asked if the reason the disc didn't work was because it was for a different version and the guy said he had no idea if that was the reason or not. Jerk. CLEARLY, that was the reason and my ignorant butt didn't know any better and he wanted me to pay 19.99 just to answer that question for me.
So, I went to the apple store and purchased snow leopard. It was delivered today, I started my computer from the new snow leopard disc and repaired my drive. Restarted. A bit slow restarting but no more loading bar and not as bad as before...iTunes still didn't work but I completely uninstalled a reinstalled it again and this time it seems to be working fine. Idvd is working, I saved another movie to disc might. And am assuming it will still burn fine with toast in the external drive.
During my arduous troubleshooting I discovered that I most probably have the seagate 1 tb hard drive that was recalled by apple due to its tendency to fail...whether this has been the root of my computer's troubles from the start, I still don't know for sure. But, everything seems to be functioning correctly now at least and since my computer has lasted this long without hard drive failures, maybe it will be ok. It's possible that I somehow caused the errors while I was fiddling around on the computer trying to fix idvd and iTunes. Hope this is helpful to somebody, someday. I did gain a lot of advice from various forums on the web and found many people having one or more of the issues I was running into, so I thought I should record my process here for others as well.

  • DVD menu title selection on DVD player with DVD's burn from iDVD

Regarding DVDs burned with iDVD 6.0.3, I have burned multiple DVDs with 6 buttons on the main menu page each of which links to a short film. On the menu screen when I push the right arrow button on the DVD remote not all the menu buttons light up. In addition to pushing the right arrow button on the remote, I have to push the up or down arrow button on the remote (to the DVD player hooked up to the TV) to get to some of the buttons in my DVD menu to be selectable. The buttons are arranged by me in a grid sort of pattern. Is there a way in iDVD I can get all the buttons to be selectable using only the right or left arrow keys on the DVD player remote? Do you understand what I am asking?

    Hi powerbookaid
And welcome to apple discussions. It's actually difficult to find standalone versions on ebay and CL / Apple's FCP and DVDSP. I found them myself but it took me a very long time. Not always something you can do overnight. But if you are very patient something will show up eventually.
If you need something now that works (although I advise caution as in backup your dvd or video_TS first) then consider this app for much less money (donationware):

  • Play dvd created with iDVD won't play in QuickTime

    Hi!
Just a simple question:is it possible to play the dvds I created with idvd in quicktime? and if so, how?
If not, are there any other players one could recommend for detailed video analysis and coding? Ideally I need to be able to forward to a specific time and to take notes at the same time (would need that for my research project).
I can not open the dvd with QuickTime, even when I set it as the default player in system preferences.
The only thing that works are VCL and the pre-installed DVD player.
I have QuickTime Player Version 7.1.3.
and the movies are downloaded from my digital camera with iMovie 6 and then exported and burned with iDVD 6
    Many thanks!!!

Just a simple question:is it possible to play the dvds I created with idvd in quicktime? and if so, how?
Yes and no. QT does not play DVD material (VOBs in VIDEO_TS folder) natively. In order to play the video portion of the "muxed" data stream requires the purchase of Apple's MPEG-2 QT component ($20). Even then, most commonly used "muxed" audio formats are not supported. Since QT does not properly handle/convert this material, Apple included the DVD Player as you have already mentioned. This application will play both DVDs and VIDEO_TS folder VOBs on your HDD.
If not, are there any other players one could recommend for detailed video analysis and coding? Ideally I need to be able to forward to a specific time and to take notes at the same time (would need that for my research project)
MPEG Streamclip (a free MPEG based third-party application), will also play VOB files (single or multiple file series), allow scrubbing to a particular time, select segments, and, if you have the QT MPEG-2 component installed, perform minor edits, apply "on-the-fly" filters for bightness, contrast, saturation, volume, de-interlace, crop/scale, etc. as it converts to QT compatible formats (if your iMovie projects are no longer available) or third-party formats for which you may have other installed components. While it will provide limited "stream" information, I would not call it an analytical tool. (E.g., provides audio/video information like formats average data rates, audio sampling rate, etc. but not graph/read things like an instantaneous data rate -- something I have been seeking.)

  • [solution inside] Poor quality of DVD created with iDVD '08 (jerky movie)

    Hi everyone !
I have a problem with the export of iDVD, the result is jerky.
    Here's what I done
    - filmed (cam sony 42E, DV)
    - imported to iMovie '08, exported to the media navigator
    - taken in iDVD and burned on a DVD simple layer in professional quality
And it looks like the movie is 15 images/s (but apparently no problem of sound)
I checked everything's in PAL (I'm in Europe)
    I checked with another DVD
    I checked the large selection in the navigator (720 * 540, H.264, 25 fps, 4Mbps)
    I tried with "best performances"
    I tried to cut the movie : 72 min -> 35 minutes
I exported just an image disc
    Nothing fixed the problem
Finally, I exported from iMovie in .dv then integrated the file in iDVD and, this time the result was the same as in the preview (thanks to SkyDrinker for the tip)
So this is a solution, but this is strange :
or my iLife is corrupted, or the way Apple say to work (with conversion in h.264) is not good.
Did anyone else had the same problem ?
    Thank you for your feedback.
    Take care!

I had the same problem with jerky pans and dancing pixels particularly when using Ken Burns on stills.
Here is a solution. Save the 08 movies in Quicktime using AIC encoding then burn using Toast 8 with the quality slider set to best. The improvement in quality is substantial.
There is some improvement(not as much as using Toast) using Quicktime AIC encoding then burning with iDVD with Professional Quality and dual layered DVDs just to make sure the quality indicator is well into the green.
The disadvantage in using Toast as compared to iDVD is that the cool menus are lost.
PS: All my burning is done using NTCS but it should not make a difference.

  • ?? burn multiple iMovie movies onto one dvd with iDVD

I understand how to burn a single iMovie project onto a dvd by using the share menu to share with iDVD. But how can i burn multiple iMovie projects with iDVD onto one disc??

You can share the first movie from iMovie, but all the others will need to be exported from iMovie as movies and dragged into the iMovie project.

  • How to restore HP factory defaults without system restore Dvds if Win7 is formatted?

I recently encountered a problem with pre-installed win7 in HP Pavilion Dv6 6121se laptop after replacing the old battery. The hard disk had three partitions: C, D & E. By default the windows was installed on C drive. The following operations were performed in sequence:
1-      Using Partition Wizard 7, I decided to format C drive with the idea to re-install the OS from recovery partition. I accidently changed the recovery partition from "Primary" to "Logical" during this process. Soon I learnt that the system recovery (F11) wasn’t functioning followed by this  message: No bootable device - - insert boot disk and press any key
2-      I made a system repair disk from another laptop to overcome the above issue. It didn’t work,  so I then decided to merge the C, D and  E partitions using AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional Edition. The status of the hard is asunder after merger:
Partition            File System          Capacity        Used Space        Free Space            Flag                     Status
    C: SYSTEM           NTFS                     199 MB         13.8MB             185.2                    Primary                  None

    F: HP_Tools        FAT32                  103MB           15.5MB             87.5MB                Primary              System
    Here comes the problem:
    A)      When C: SYSTEM is set as active partition, I get this message on startup
    BOOTMGR is missing
    Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
    B)       When E: Recovery is set as active partition (or tapping F11), I get this message on startup
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.
               File: \Boot\BCD
              Status: 0xc0000098
Info: The windows   boot configuration data file does not contain a valid OS entry.
Please bear in mind that I didn’t make any system restore DVDs in advance which could have been used at this stage but I do have the default recovery partitions intact in hard drive as shown above. After all this, is there any way to retrieve my system to factory settings without losing recovery partition and HP tools?
    Thank you all!

Try download a PE system and get in there and run an WIM tool to install windows to C
(Look for base.wim in the recovery partition and install it)
