Restore ESXI Windows VMs to another machine / host. Licensing requirements?
Right now I have a Dell R710 running ESXI with the essentials license. I am now buying another server to use a spare. In case the main server fails, I need to have some hardware to restore backups to.My questions/concerns relate to licensing:If I restore Windows Server 2012 VMs from that server to another server do I need another set of licenses for that backup server? What if they are only going to run for a week or 2 waiting for the main server to be repaired? If I have a separate 2012 server license(2 in a vm install) how do I utilize it if the restore will be using the key from the first server? Does just having the licenses allow me do this or does it need to actually be activated under the new license(change the license after restore)If I wanted to do failover to the second server using VMware ESXI...do I need to get additional...

Restore Oracle XE database to another machine
I have an oracle XE database on a Windows XP machine, and I want to copy it to a Windows 7 machine.
On the XP, I performed a backup through the "Backup Database" from the GUI (BACKUP.BAT). The Oracle backup created 3 new folders underneath C:\ORACLEXE\APP\ORACLE\FLASH_RECOVERY_AREA\XE\
ARCHIVELOG
AUTOBACKUP
BACKUPSET
I installed XE on the Windows 7 machine and it seems to work well.
Then I coped the 3 backup folders onto a jump drive and put them in the corresponding folder structure on the new Windows 7 machine. I ran the Restore from the GUI as an administrator (RESTORE.BAT). The restore failed, and I can't seem to figure out why. I'm not sure what the Sequence Numbers are all about.
Now I can't get into Apex or Apex_Admin
Thanks for taking a look at this.

Recovery Manager complete. After playing around a little bit I fixed the problem.
There are a total of four folders in \FLASH_RECOVERY_AREA\XE\ I had only copied three of the four.
ARCHIVELOG
AUTOBACKUP
BACKUPSET
The Windows services keep the files in ONLINELOG open, so I had to shut down the services and then work with the folder. Therefore four folders have to be transported and copied onto the new machine:
ARCHIVELOG
AUTOBACKUP
BACKUPSET
ONLINELOG
If you run as an administrator "Backup" from the GUI, it executes BACKUP.BAT, a batch file which calls RMAN. Once that's done, copy the four folders to the same location on the target machine and then run as an administrator "Restore" (RESTORE.BAT).
In another forum someone said to be sure that the "Archive Logs" are copied. It should be interpreted to mean not just the "ARCHIVELOG" folder, but all four folders.

Restore backup in another machine
Forgive me for the 'weak' English.
Oracle 10gR2 in both machines.
RH4E in both machines.
I am trying to restore one backup in another machine.
I copied the backup files to the new host, created one passwordfile, created a init.ora file and created the directories used in the init.ora.
I set the ORACLE_SID for the SID of the original db and after to try to connect as sysdba I receive error ORA-01031: insufficient privileges.
sqlnet.ora:
SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)
But I also tried with other parameters (NONE, EXCLUSIVE) and nothing.
I have one another instance running in this machine (where I want restore backup).
export oracle_sid=my_sid
sqlplus /nolog
SQL> conn /as sysdba
ORA-01031: insufficient privileges
Somebody can help me?sqlnet.ora:
SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)Assuming your OS user (normally oracle) is member of dba group, try removing (or commenting) that line. -
How is the performance of Mac Pro if i use it as host for windows and linux virtual machines.
How is the performance of Mac Pro if i use it as host for windows and linux virtual machines.
I am planning to buy a high performance PC to run my Windows and Linux servers as vitrual machines for my testing purposes.
Initially i planned to build my own computer with recommended configurations but considering space constaints and cooling factors i think Mac Pro can be a choice. But need some inputs if Mac pro (Intel Xeon E5, 12 GB RAM) is good for running virtual Machines. You could even run Windows natively and still run your VM servers.
I have seen reports and such on MacRumors and elsewhere - run Windows natively as well as VMs (can also do testing and run Mavericks in a VM under Mavericks)
The fast internal PCIe-SSD, plus 6 or 8 cores, and 32-64GB RAM. Of course for $5,000 for 8-core, some Thunderbolt storage and 32GB/64GB RAM you can buy some serious hardware. -
After I install itunes on my windows 7 - 64 bit machine it will not reboot and I need to restore to a date before itunes was install. How do I fix this?
I'm having a very similar issue, paired with iTunes not being able to get online.
iTunes shows up in processes and then hangs at 17,000 K or so -- sometimes it will start up, but that (if it occurs) is a delay of literal hours.
Pretty meticulously went through all the 'cannot connect' trouble shooting, and have uninstalled, restarted, and then reinstalled every piece of apple software; issue is just as firm. Starting in safe mode or admin mode don't fix it; signing in as a different user doesn't fix it. -
Recognizing hardware from a Windows virtual machine hosted on Linux
Hi,
I would like to isntall windows in a virtual machine run from linux, and run my labview vi's and do aquisition from there. I tried once using a virtualized Windows XP 32-bit on ubuntu 64-bit, with Virtualbox, but the windows installation didn't recognize my PCI-MIO-16E-4 card. Maybe its because I didn't have the linux drivers installed.. I don't know. Soon I will begin using a the 7853R FPGA with the PXI-1036 Chassis, and would prefer if my virutalized Windows installation could see this hardware.
Has anyone gone through the steps of using NI hardware from a virtual Windows installation? Either Virtualbox, Xen, Vmware, or whatever..
Thanks,
-Sidney
NI Hardware: PXI-7853R, PCI-5122, PCI-6733, PXI-1036, PCI-MIO-16E-4, PCI-6110
Computer Hardware: Xeon Quad Core - 2.33 Ghz, 8 GB RAM
Software: Labview 2009, Labview FPGA 2009, Vista 64-bit, MAX 4.6, DAQmx 9.0, NI-SCOPE 3.5
Solved!
Go to Solution.Hi Sidney,
I see that this thread is a bit old, but I still have something to add. I know for a fact that VirtualBox, VMWare and VirtualPC won't let a guest OS see any real PCI card installed on the host computer. However, you might have better luck with Xen. There are options in Xen which allows you to pass PCI devices forward to guest OS's. People have gotten pretty far with using PCI forwarding that they have even managed to run Windows Vista with full hardware acceleration with Aero as a guest operating system. The only requirement is for your CPU to have virtualization support, i.e. the vmx or svm flag. The only catch is, Xen is significantly harder to set up.
I haven't tried this myself, and I am not from the LabVIEW group, and I am by no means authorative on this topic (don't let my signature fool you).
If you manage to get this to work, we would be interested to hear from you!

A few months ago I partitioned my mac using BootCamp and successfully installed Windows and a few Windows-only programs (games). I never restored my mac from the Time Machine backup and now I would really like all of my files back on my mac. I am wondering if I insert the osx install disc and restore from Time Machine backup, will that get rid of the partition I made for Windows? Will the Windows side of my hard drive stay in tact or will everything on that side get erased when I restore the mac side from the Time Machine backup. It was a HUUUUUUUGE pain to do the BootCamp partition and get everything Windows set up and I would really like to not have to do that all over again. I just want to make sure that if I insert the mac osx install disc and restore from Time Machine backup it will only affect the Mac partition, NOT the Windows partition.
Hi,
Time Machine does not touch your BootCamp Windows.
It simply said ignores it completely.
Nonetheless, I am curious as to why you wanna restore a Time Machine backup.
Usually during partitioning with the BootCamp Assistant in OSX to make the Windows partition your OSX stays intact.

Is it legal to use Macintosh virtual machine hosted by Windows operating system? If yes, please suggest recommended hardware and license cost?

I thought that at least some version of OSX could not be VM in Mavericks, but if you say it is allowed so be it.
There are some people who dispute the details of what "the software" means in the license. From my point of view, I have a license to run all of those versions each license explicity says I can use a VM. I don't think it is illegal or even unseemly. The only version restriction I know of that the new VM policy only applies to Lion or greater. 10.6 could only be run on a VM if you had the expensive server version. The licenses do explicity list the acceptable uses and that includes OS X Server, software development, and non-commercial use. They don't want people selling online access to OS X, that's all.
I do not VM Windows on my MBP because I have no need.
Me neither. I used to though. Funny how a Mac was the most critical tool in debugging web sites on various versions of IE
I don't even run OS X in a VM anyway. It does work but it is quite resource intensive. Maybe if I had one of those new Mac Pros... -

In this case even mysub.myCompany.com is considered a different domain from www.myCompany .com.

Using Time Machine from another machine to restore Library Folders
I am using TM from another machine, (which has died) to restore folders onto a working system, some of the folders i need are in the User Library, but how do i display the User Library in TM?
Thank You
JohnHello,
I have now noticed that the cmd+shift+g method works OK if you are doing a standard restore from the TM on the current system, but does not work when using a TM from another machine. I do not know enough about Unix file structures to specify the correct file under these circumstances, any help woudl be grateful
Thanks

Windows Service, SSPI, Kerberos, SQL Server on another machine.
Hi,
I have a TCPIP service running on SERVER which connects to a SQL Server that is located on another machine. (SQLSERVER).
The client authenticates with the SERVER using the Kerberos security package successfully.
the 3 machines are in the same domain.
When the service is running under the System account, the connection to the SQL Server machine succeeds (I have enabled the "Trust computer for delegation" option for the SERVER machine).
But When the service is running under a specific user profile (eg: USER1), the connection to the SQL Server machine fails with this error:
Login failed for user 'AUTORITE NT\ANONYMOUS LOGON'
I have tried toadd the "Impersonate a client after authentication" user right for USER1 in the Local Security Policy, but it does not solve the problem.
Does someone know what is wrong here please?
Thank you,
Olivier gg.
(Note: the "Forest Functional Level" of the domain is Win2000).Retried in a test domain with
Forest Functional Level set to 2008, and figured out what to do.
This page (How To: Use Impersonation and Delegation in ASP.NET 2.0, (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms998351.aspx#paght000023_delegation) especially the
Use Kerberos authentication and delegation part) helped me.
However something remains unclear: I had first selected the "Trust this user for delegation to any service (Kerberos only)" option for the domain user,
but it did not work (Does someone know why?).
I had to select the "Trust this user for delegation to specified services only" option and specify explicitely the appropriate SPN in order to have the delegation working. -
Restore sessions within another "restore session" window
SOS!!! Yesterday I opened firefox through a link in my email. The window opened with two tabs: one is the new link I opened and the other one is for restoring my previous sessions from earlier time. Since firefox was working a bit strangely so I tried to open the new link several times. Now problem happened. When I try to restore sessions, it only restores to the last one I had with just two tabs. Even though I kept clicking on "restore session" within the restore session window, it won't show all my previous tabs information but stuck with the two tabs lastly seen. And it continue to repeat these two tabs no matter how I choose (even by deactivating the new tab window, it still doesn't restore to original status). I thought by shutting down my computer completely, maybe firefox will go back to my previous settings, but this morning when I turned it back on, it still stick with the last two tabs opened yesterday. Where can I find all the old tabs I used to saved? SOS!!!
Is the History > Recently Closed Windows (or Tabs) item available ?

Hello, I was just watching a presentation where the spokesperson is stating that Windows VMs (8.1 I assume) on a Hyper-V host with Dynamic Memory enabled can possibly use as little as 300 MB of RAM when idle.
My 8.1 Enterprise VM's with Dynamic Memory enabled still use about 2600 MB of RAM when sitting idle. Is this normal? It would be great to get this usage down. I hear rumors of 'MinWin' but don't think this really relates to a VDI deployment.
Also, I have configured 8 GB for startup RAM if that matters.
Thanks
- Mr. Sid
- Mr. SidAmount of memory is very dependent upon workload on the system. If nothing else on the Hyper-V host is asking for memory, the VM will not simply give it up. If you have plenty of RAM on your host, and the total amount of memory needed by all
the VMs and the host is less than the amount of RAM on the host, you will not likely see any decrease in the size of the VMs. With dynamic memory, if there is less physical memory than the sum of all the running VMs, one VM may need memory so it asks
for it. This might cause the memory manager to request to take the memory away from another VM. That VM looks at what it has allocated and determines what it can give up. Without this 'external' pressure, there is no need for the VM to give
up memory. In concept, this is no different than what happens among processes on a stand-alone system, except that when a process exits, it releases its memory. So, if the VM is sitting idle, that means processes are not exiting, so no memory is
being freed. It there were other machines needing the memory, it is possible that the idle VM could give up memory to those VMs needing more memory.
8GB for startup memory seems really excessive for a Window 8.1 installation. I can't think of any sort of typical workstation application that would require that much memory to start up. But, that makes no difference on freeing memory.

Does anyone has idea what files (tsm files) need to be modified to do redirected restore on windows.
