I've brought an Imac pc off a friend and they havent removed all of their data.
so i need to restore it to factory settings, but my command R key isnt working.
Im not sure what to do next. please help?

but my command R key isnt working.
The command-r (boot from recovery partition) did not start until OS 10.7; your PowerPC iMac is limited to no higher OS than 10.5.8.
Depending on where you live, you can phone the Apple Store, give them you serial number, and they can see if they have original system disks available. In the US the cost is about US$16 a disk
Does your friends still have the original gray disks that came with the computer?

  • Restore factory settings  Imac  (2001) and upgrade

    Hi,
I have an Imac that misses some software. I'm trying to install a browser but nothing seems to work.
I suppose I can restore factory settings but I don't have any idea how I should start.
It is the first generation of Imac's
    thank you for any answer
    kind regards

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If it is an iMac from 2001, it isn't the first generation, albeit it is the first generic chasis structure. Significant modifications in terms of compatibility were made between 1998 and 2001. Thus if your desire is to install a browser on it, you'll have a bit of a chore doing it depending on the age. First off, determine which generation iMac it is:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1463?viewlocale=en_US
Next if you don't have the original installer discs, at least discover which firmware is installed by booting into open firmware by holding command-option-o-f at startup.
It will give you a Boot ROM version.
This will tell you if you need to find some place with a compatible version of Mac OS 9 first before installing any version of Mac OS X. The iMacs listed here have specific firmware versions required before installing Mac OS X after the clock battery is replaced:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
Once you have the correct firmware installed, let's discover if Mac OS 9 is sufficient for your web browsing needs:
http://browser.netscape.com/releases - lists Mac PowerPC versions compatible with Mac OS 9.
http://browsers.evolt.org/download.php?/ie/mac/5.1.7_Classic/InternetExplorer517 EN.bin is the only place you can get the most recent version of Mac OS 9 compatible internet explorer.
http://mac.oldapps.com/opera.php?old_opera=26 Opera for Mac OS 9 is available.
http://www.icab.de/dl.php iCab is also good for Mac OS 9.
    http://www.floodgap.com/software/classilla/
    http://wamcom.org/latest-131/
Are both Mozilla versions for Mac OS 9.
If none of these serve your purposes as a web browser, then installing a compatible version of Mac OS X will give you many more choices. Tell us your iMac release version, and we can tell you what can be done.

  • Is there ANY way possible to MANUALLY restore factory settings for an ipod classic, FROM the device ITSELF (as opposed to restoring from iTunes or forcing a reformat elsewhere)?

I have 3 iPods:  1 Touch and 2 Classics.  The Touch and 1 of the Classics are both working fine; the other Classic is not showing up in iTunes, My Computer, or in Device Manager.  While I CAN do a simple reset, it accomplishes nothing, and I am UNABLE to get the faulty Classic into "disk mode".
Based on what I've encountered thus far, I have a suspicion that my faulty Classic somehow thinks it's formatted for the Mac, as I DO see the serial # and I do NOT see "Windows Format" in the About screen on the ipod itself.  Is that even POSSIBLE?  I have never used a Mac, but that's what the documentation I've read on this Support Site have lead me to believe.
The faulty Classic will charge ONLY in a wall charger; it clearly wants nothing to do with my laptop as it refuses to stand up and be recognized in iTunes or in My Computer....why??!!??    I DID try all of the other obvious troubleshooting items; I tried different USB ports, different cords, different laptops, and even different ipods.....BUT....all is well with everything else BUT for this pain-in-the-@$$ ipod.
IDEALLY.....since my ipod refuses to make itself available for me to "restore factory settings" via iTunes, the way it SHOULD be handled....., I'm wondering if there are any hackers out here that know of a way to FORCE a MANUAL restoration of factory settings of the ipod, via super-secret "key strokes" on the ipod itself (and not via the iTunes software that is curently useless for this particular ipod)....?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!  Without your assistance, my Classic ipod remains an expensive door stop and/or paper weight.  It's behavior at this point is nothing shy of rude and inconvenient!

There is no way to restore/reformat the device without connecting it to a PC or Mac.
Have you checked the iPod's dock connector for signs of bent/damaged/corroded pins that could prevent a full connection with your PC?  If there is any lodged debris, take a can of compressed air to it to blow it all out.

  • Trying To Restore Factory Settings

(Apologies for this double post, trying to find my way to the right forum)
    Hi all,
My iPod has been getting worse over the last month, and now won't play anything.
I thought it might be time to wipe it clean and restore factory settings. I downloaded updater from here:
    http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
Ran the updater. It seems to have erased everything on the iPod, without installing the update. The iPod no longer mounts on desktop. iPod screen seems to be asking me to plug iPod in to wall socket. iPod was fully charged before update procedure.
I just want to wipe iPod clean of any corruption, install the latest iPod software, and then will reimport tunes.
I've always charged iPod battery from iMac, don't think we have wall adapter, and don't understand why it is needed now.
My best guess is I have the iPod with Clickwheel. iPod was a gift from friend, no packaging. Manual does not identify iPod.
Basically, I seem to have killed my iPod, and will surely be grateful for any advice. Thanks!

Thanks for your report Ken, maybe we can figure it out if we work together.
I'm all Mac here, so Vista may not be the issue.
Do you have the actual wall adapter? I don't have it, and never needed it, but looks like I'll have to try to buy one to get past this.
Regrettably, the manual is worthless on this issue.
As best I can figure it, the restore process wiped the ipod clean, but didn't reinstall the needed software. So now the ipod can't talk to the computer?
Dunno. We need the help of somebody who knows more than us, or knows where to find such help.
Thanks to anybody who can point us in the right direction!

  • Formatting HD/restore factory settings?

I have an Imac G3 500mhz, currently running panther. I have lost my panther disks, however i have tiger disks. I want to either use the tiger disks to erase the HD and/or load tiger, or erase everything accet panther from the HD. However the imac does not have a DVD drive. I have an external DVD drive, but that only turns on when the imac is running - disabling me from booting up from the Tiger disks. Is there another way to load the tiger disks, possibly through my 20" core duo, or restore factory settings on the imac without a disk?
Would there be a way of delaying startup, so that the external DVD drive had a change to startup, and then run the tiger disk?
    Thanks in advance, Feron.
Imac 20" Intel Pentium 4 Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

PowerPC Macs (like the iMac G3) can't boot from USB drives - so that may well be the issue. Intel Macs can boot from USB drives.
① You could exchange your Tiger DVD for set of CDs.
    or
② Using a 6 pin to 6 pin firewire cable connect the two machines together. Place the Tiger Retail install DVD into the iMac Intel.
Go to  > System Preferences > Start-Up Disk > and click "Target Disk Mode". The iMac Intel will boot with a purple screen with a yellow Firewire logo.
Then restart/turn-on the iMac G3. Hold down the Option key (marked as 'alt' on many UK keyboards) and select the Tiger Install DVD and click the right arrow. (It takes longer than you think it should to load this screen so bear with it - it's checking for networked drives.)
Then the iMac G3 should start up with the Tiger DVD and lead you through installation. Remember using this retail disk you won't get any of the bundled OS 9 applications that came with the iMac G3 in the first place.
Remember you must use a Black coloured Tiger disk. The grey one that came with your iMac Intel won't work.

  • How do I restore factory settings on my MacBook Air?

I have sold my MacBook Air (bought in August 2011) and I need to restore factory settings.  Can someone please help?

As quoted from apple member Kappy
Boot from the Recovery HD by restarting the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and "R" keys until the computer starts from the Recovery HD. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
At this point all your data are securely removed. You can shut down the computer or reinstall Lion from the main menu.

first, you posted a symbian question in the maemo forum...you may have better luck there.
second, i hope you have a backup.  the only way credible people would help you with this is if you posted a receipt showing the unit you have is paid for by you...and not stolen.

  • I phone 4 restoring factory settings

I am looking for some help. Like others on these forums I have just passed an old iphone on to a friend. I have been trying to restore factory settings.
When I use settings general - reset I have a restrictions pass code. I do not remember this. I have tried all the 4 number combinations I normally use.
I went onto I tunes and tried to restore factory settings - it just keep timing out
The phone is linked to an iTunes account that I don't have the email access anymore, icloud is also linked to this.  Do I have any options.
    Thanks

  • T42 - Problem in Restoring Factory Settings

When I pressed the F11 or Access IBM button to interrupt menu during startup to restore factory settings for T42, it always turn to
Press one of the following keys to continue :
    ESC to resume normal startup
F1 to enter the IBM BIOS setup utility
F12 to choose a temporary startup device
I don't have the recovery CD with me.  I tried to go to "Access IBM" to create recovery IBM, I can't find this in "Access IBM".
Could you advise how I can restore to factory settings?
    Thanks!

You probably have your recovery service partition removed, or someone removed it for you. I presume that your normal OS is not booting up correctly anymore???
There is two ways you can go about it if you don't have your normal OS running anymore, you can use a normal XP OS you got from somewhere, and then proceed to install your OS and then download all your relevant drivers from Lenovo site here:
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?doctypeind=9&template=/productselection/landin...
make sure you fill the requiste detail regarding model type
or call Lenovo/IBM service at your location and see whether they can send you the CD for a service charge, this will depend on whether you still got warranty, and whether your warranty is valid in Hong Kong for your machine, the Lenovo/IBM service may send you the cd if you don't meet either one of those conditions, but it is not a given.
I will suggest you just get your own XP os, you can still use the serial key on the bottom of the machine, but you may need to call Microsoft regarding issue of specific activation code.

  • Locked out of phone, can't restore factory settings

my iPhone 4 is seized up and I can't restore because it won't let me enter my passcode. This occurred after I accidentally enabled the voice-over and tried to turn that function off. After repeatedly turning phone off, then on, it still occurs. The voice-over remains on, and when I try to enter my passcode, it doesn't take my input unless I tap the number several time until the field/cell is populated.  Once I enter all cells with my passcode, the phone says that the code is incorrect and locks me out for progressively longer periods.  Since I can't unlock the phone, I'm unable to restore factory settings.  Of course I would like to not have to do this since I don't want to lose all the data on my phone.  Does anyone know how i can unlock the phone and/or restore it?

Thank You very Much sir. it works on my iphone 4.

When you synced with iTunes It would have tried to replace the music on the iPhone with what is on the computer. which is what happens when you sync with iTunes.
If the songs are purchased you can re-downloaded them Pretty easily. You mentioned that you still see the songs and that you could not play them. Do they have a Cloud symbol next to them? If so this means that you can download them but that they are not on the device.

When selecting "update all," it says "Cannot Download.  There is not enough available local storage to download these items.  You can manage your local device storage usage in Settings."
How can this be the case when I haven't changed any apps from before updrading to iOS6, and I don't have any music yet on the phone?  Why is it telling me there is not enough local space?

    Hi RileyAvaCadenRiver,
If you recently updated your iPhone to iOS7, you will need to update iTunes on your computer to iTunes 11.1 or newer for it to correctly recognize the iPhone. You may find the following link helpful:

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • How to Restore Factory Settings on a Mac?

How to Restore Factory Settings on a Mac OS X 10.6.8?
I have been told you can do this without the Installation CD. I also do not remember the installation CD when i got the laptop. If it's possible then please someone let me know! if not then how can i get a new CD to do this?
my computer keeps freezing on me at random times, and i have tried taking the laptop to my college tech support and also Best Buy and they said they can't do anything and that i need to try resetting the mac.

You may not remember the installer disks but they came in the box. Your profile shows you are running 10.6.6 Snow Leopard. To restore back to factory settings you need those disks. That said to go that route may be unnecessry. Stay away from Best Buy tech people. They know nothing. Without the disks you do a repair disk to see if that helps:
Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line.
Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
    At the command-line prompt type:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:
** The volume (name_of_volume) appears to be OKIf fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****
Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.
Your computer should start up normally and allow you to log in.
