Restore failure - not responding

my ipod mini dowloaded restore info, the final step as shows on the screen is to plug it into the wall... which i did and nothing changes! plugged in (tried 3 different wall sockets) and the 'plug into wall' diagram still shows on screen. tried resetting twice, no luck... help!

hi ombre!
hmmm. do you have access to a different AC Adapter? it's plausible that the one you have at the moment might be sick (rather than the ipod).

  • Restore Failure - not enough space!

    Hi all,
I just used Disk Utility to make a backup of a MBA (65GB) onto a 500GB external drive (Restore from internal HDD to external HDD). I then reformatted the internal hard disk and proceeded to restore my backup (external HDD to internal HDD). I soon received an error message stating "Restore Failure - not enough space". I guess that means Disk Utility backups are a one-way operation, since you can't restore from a larger drive to a smaller one? Is there something I am overlooking? I ended up using Carbon Copy Cloner to do the job, but I'm wondering how (if?) restoring from a larger backup drive is possible using Disk Utility?

Another way of dealing with the problem would be to install OS X and then transfer the data in Setup Assistant.

  • Firefox crashed and now when I try to open it, all it ever says is session restore and not responding. How do I stop this?

When I downloaded the latest version about a week ago, this started. Any time it is opened, it goes to session restore. When I click anywhere on the screen, the tab says not responding.

Try updating your QuickTime to the most recent version. Does that clear up the DEP errors in iTunes?

  • Restore Failure:  not enough space on /dev/disk2s2 to restore

New MacBook Pro with Lion all up to date.  Have 9 partitions (plus the two hidden ones).  Operating system is on one with 125GB.  82.72GB are used and 42.28GB are available (says disk utility).  I want to "restore" to an external hard drive.  I don't care if that partition is bootable or not.  It is 124.48 GB and 124.26GB are free.  When I try to do the restore, I get the message in the subject above.
Background.  I've been doing exactly this for 8 years on my two previous macbooks.  It used to be that you could do this with the computer running, but it didn't always work.  Now you have to unmount the partition to restore it, which seems more likely to work.  In other words, you have to restart and go into recovery mode.  Irritating, but if it worked better it would be worth it.  (Only have to do this for the operating system partition.  Easy to backup all the others and that's been done.  However, I would really like to back up the operating system partition.)  I have always found this an easy operation.  You could copy your computer onto an external drive, replace the computer's hard drive and copy things back, all using restore in disk utility.  Obviously, if I can't copy the partition off to somewhere else, I'm not going to be able to copy it back if I ever need to.
It is true that the OS partition just points to /.  Is it possible that restore wants to carry along all the other partitions as well and that's why there isn't enough space?  If so, this is a bug, since OS has always pointed to / and there has never been a problem before.
I am moderately paranoid because I have lost enough hard drives in my life.  I do have time machine but I read that if you backup from it, it wipes out your recovery partition.  I'd like to have both my time machine and my restore copies.
I'm thinking of packing up the external hard drive and the computer and making an appointment at the apple store.  Help very much appreciated.

Disk utility seems to be broken now, at least from my point of view.
Disk Utility's restore function never was quite good to begin with, very dumb.
You'll like Carbon Copy Cloner, it's the best, and it's smart.
Especially the huge control it gives and the fact that you can update the clones and even save states between the updates as backups.
Best of all it will copy EFI and Recovery and "fit" to upgrade to larger or smaller partitions if the data will allow it. The scheduling ability is a nice feature too.
I use it for auto-updating and/or reminding me to update clone on another partition on the boot drive and external drives every few days or weeks or so, depending upon my needs. So it's nice for the fact that I can scheduale many clones on seperate hardware.
All my clones are option key bootable, plus the files can be accessed directly by any platform that can read the HFS+ format, I'm not locked into using or restoring only to another Mac.
Freedom is good, TimeMachine is the absolute purist evil as a backup system. (just kidding, it's ok for some )
BTW, if you want your data to be a lot more reliable on hard drives, you should perhaps read this.

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

    - Try another USB port.
    - Try on another computer

  • IPod Touch accelerometer not responding, can't detect in iTunes to Restore

Well here's an odd problem. My 64GB iPod Touch 3rd gen suddenly stopped responding to rotation/movement from the accelerometer.
The Rotation Lock feature is off. I've toggled this on and off many times. There is no icon in the status bar indicating it is on.
Everything is stuck in portrait mode. When trying to play a game that relys on the accelerometer the game will also not respond to movements.
I followed Apple's KB directions and held down the Sleep+Home buttons to hard-reset the iPod, and that seemed to occasionally help, but sometimes the accelerometer still would not respond. I plugged in the iPod, went into iTunes (latest version, 10.1.2) and did a full Restore, erasing and resetting everything to default 4.2.1 firmware. I did not revert to a previous saved backup, so there should be no trace of the previous firmware at all.
After the Restore, I synced my music and apps back to the iPod, and the accelerometer seemed to work fine. After a while, the screen would not rotate again, and apps using the accelerometer would not respond. Again, I checked that Rotation Lock was off.
I plug the iPod back into my MBP, hear the "Ding" charging sound from the iPod, but iTunes does not detect it! However, it is listed in System Profiler under USB as "iPod":
    iPod:
    Product ID: 0x1299
    Vendor ID: 0x05ac (Apple Inc.)
    Version: 0.01
    Serial Number: xxxxx
    Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
    Manufacturer: Apple Inc.
    Location ID: 0xfa140000
    Current Available (mA): 500
    Current Required (mA): 500
    Extra Operating Current (mA): 500
To rule out my user account, I used a Guest account, opened iTunes, and it still doesn't detect the iPod, although it still appears in System Profiler.
Is this some software bug? Is the hardware at fault? I've been out of warranty by about a month now, as I bought it a year ago, so it's kind of frustrating that my iPod would suddenly bug out like this. It's still usable, but it's annoying to be forced to type everything in portrait, and be unable to use app that relys on the accelerometer.

My money's on an intermittent hardware issue. Replacing the logic board would most likely fix it.

Unfortunately you've discovered too late how important it is to maintain an up-to-date backup of your iTunes library (and all other data of value).  You could, before wiping the drive, have considered making use of a commercial data recovery service that could (albeit at considerable cost) have extracted your library from the hard disk, even if virus infected.
In the absence of that option, you will need to restore the content of your library from its original sources:
Depending on your location, you may be able to re-download any iTunes Store purchases that are still available on the Store
Likewise, most digital purchases from Amazon (including auto-rip copies of purchased CDs) should be available from the Amazon Cloud and via the Amazon Music application - the same may be true of other commercial sources for digital downloads
Content imported from your CDs will have to imported again
The specific situation that you describe regarding the music imported from your friend's external HDD suggests that either the source is badly organized and/or originates from a source other than iTunes (other media players may use alternative tags for information like artist, title, album, etc. that are not wholly consistent with how iTunes handle these).  Without details of the issues you're seeing it is difficult to suggest a remedy other than going through the media album-by-album, track-by-track, and correcting the inconsistencies.
In the absence of a backup or access to the original library data there is no option other than painstakingly recreating your library as described above.  As you do so, you'll now realize how important creating and maintaining backups are - in my case I have at all times three separate duplicates of my library, in two different locations, where none is ever more than a week old compared to the content of my master library.

  • IPad touch screen does not respond even after full restore and update

    I have an iPad 2 64 GB
It has for a number of months intermittently stopped responding to any touch screen inputs. This issue began almost as soon as I opened the iPad for the first time. As it was happening very rarely and normally responded eventually, so I thought nothing of it.
This week the iPad will not respond to any touch input at all (Home, On/Off, Volume and Mute buttons still respond). I have tried the hard reset process a number of times and still nothing.
I backed up the device to my machine and applied the latest update 5.1.1 and still no response. I then did a factory reset and still nothing.
I have never dropped or damaged my iPad in any way.
Does anybody know of any ongoing issues with the touch screen or a solution to this problem?

    Thank you.
I've already booked myself in to the Genius Bar this week.
I suspect it is a hardware failure and more specifically a loose internal connection.

iPod touch not responding and has white screen. Tried to restore, drain battery and re-charge etc but still nothing. What can I do?

Try what you have not tried so far. You may have tried all and the Apple store maybe in order.
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
