Restore failure sql server 2012
Hi All,
SQL VERSION :
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 - 11.0.2100.60 (X64) Feb 10 2012 19:39:15 Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation Enterprise Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.1 <X64> (Build 7601: Service Pack 1) (Hypervisor).
I have taken a backup of a database say A and trying to restore the same backup over a new database B. When I try restoring it it fails with error : Exclusive
access could not be obtained because the database is in use.
When I uncheck the tail log backup option it doesn't fail but keeps on going for a while. MDF size is about 2 GB and ldf is about 7 GB for the database A.(I know its bad and may be no one has taken a log backup for quite a while)
Moreover , I found that the mdf and ldf file was created for the new database except that it was still performing the restore until I stopped it.
Please guide me whether I need to be more patient or there is some other way around.
Thanks and regards, Rishabh K

This message says that some request was connected to database when you were trying to restore. You need to make sure nothing is accessing DB when you are trying to restore close all open SMS windows and query windows. Run below query
use master
go
alter database db_name ser single_user with rollback immediate
go
restore database db_name from disk='location' with replace, recoverey
--edit restore script as per need

My Technet Articles
HI Shanky_621,
I am working on the dev environment and this is the new DB I have created just before restoring so no body else can request anything.
One question : is there any possibility that there was uncommitted transaction recorded in the log file which is causing so much time to restore ?
Thanks and regards, Rishabh K

How to backup/restore credentials in sql server 2012
Hi, Can any one direct how to restore credentials using T-sql or GUI on SQL Server 2012.
As per BOL, we know how to create credentials.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms189522.
But looking for taking backup/restore credentials sql serve 2012.
ThanksHi,
I highly recommend to go from step 1 to the end in this tutorial, but if you realy want to just only to restore than you can start in Lesson 4: Perform a Restore From a Full Database Backup

SQL Server 2012 restoring database from backup file
Hi All,
1. I was restoring the database from PROD box to DEV box with the deferent name.
For Ex: Both PROD and DEV boxes are having "A" database. Now I am refreshing database"A" from PROD bot to DEV box with name "B". Now while restoring in SQL server 2012 I used GUI and took database name as "A" by default.
by mistake I executed the request. before completing I notice that "A" database in DEV Box went to restoring mode.
Now, in middle I stopped the query but still I am seeing database "A" is in restoring state.
Please guide me is there any way to bring database online with current data?
2. Why sql server 2012 takes tail log backup of the existing database while restoring database with different name?Hi,
check this link for the same issue and solutions:

Failure installing Sql Server 2012 x64
Hello,
I am trying to install Sql Server 2012 x64 with SP1, but I am running into the following error(s). It occurs almost immediately after I run "setup.exe":
<error>
TITLE: SQL Server Setup failure.
SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:
There was a failure to initialize a setting from type Microsoft.SqlServer.Configuration.SetupExtension.InstallSharedDirSetting.
Error code 0x8564000E.
For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?LinkID=20476&ProdName=Microsoft%20SQL%20Server&EvtSrc=setup.rll&EvtID=50000&EvtType=0x9F9575BA%25400x38AD03A5
BUTTONS:
OK
</error>
Any ideas what else I can do to get past this?Well... Don't know when I downloaded the original ISO image file. I re-downloaded, and now it extracted, and I ran it, which now I get the expected SQL Server Installation Center.

How to restore a database backup taken from a SQL Server 2012 instance to SQL Server 2014
I am trying to restore a database backup taken from a SQL Server 2012 instance to my new SQL Server 2014 instance. When I add the .bak through the Mgmt studio UI, it does not seem to find a backup set in the file so I cannot proceed (does not give
me any errors though either. I tried restoring through TSQL command but only got a database restore terminating abnormally error with no other details. How can I restore this database to SQL 2014?Hello,
Please examine SQL Server Error Log and share with us any error you can find. The following article may locate the log:

Hi all,
Has anyone come across SQL Server 2012 SP1 CU8/9 failing to install with a “Failed to retrieve data for this request.” error.
The error is too generic for a useful search on web, for me at least anyway.
Had no problems patching a whole bunch of other servers in the same environment.
I’m no good at reading these error logs. For some reason the primary replica is referenced in the detailed log???
The CU8/9 patch has been run by both Domain Admins and local Admin with no luck.
We are trying to patch a secondary failover replica. (SharePoint 2013 is installed on this server.)
This is from the summary log:
Overall summary:

review the log files.

Thanks for posting the detailed log. I dont have exact solution for this but I can give you some hint what could be reason patch has failed below message points to fact that there is some issue with account which is used to install CU patch.Have alook at
below log.It says that when patch was trying to get details from other node in cluster it was not able to.

IMO I strongly feel it is issue with the account. Microsoft has also documented about this for SQL Server 2008 .Have a look at following links
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-US;2000257
Please also assign privilege mentioned in below link
http://www.bradg.co.za/?p=12
Hope this helps

I have unique service accounts set up for multiple instances on the same SQL Server 2012.
When step 3 of the inbuilt syspolicy_purge_history job(Erase Phantom System Health Records) runs, it appears to attempt to run against every instance on the server despite being passed the instance path!
The SQLServer's powershell script call:
if ('$(ESCAPE_SQUOTE(INST))' -eq 'MSSQLSERVER') {$a = '\DEFAULT'} ELSE {$a = ''};
(Get-Item SQLSERVER:\SQLPolicy\$(ESCAPE_NONE(SRVR))$a).EraseSystemHealthPhantomRecords()
so with instances SERVER\X this runs as...
(Get-Item SQLSERVER:\SQLPolicy\SERVER\X).EraseSystemHealthPhantomRecords()
SERVER\X's job will run and I will see login failures in the error logs of SERVER\Y and SERVER\Z for the service account set up for instance X.
It seems Microsoft's only 'accepted solution' to this problem is for me to compromise my security by escalating the access of these service accounts?
Has anyone else run into and corrected this failure?Hi Atombath,
When you install multiple instances on one Server, and the SQL Server’s powershell scripts are the same in inbuilt syspolicy_purge_history job steps. However, when you start PowerShell by right clicking
syspolicy_purge_history job, you will find it will point to their own instance. I do a test in my SQL Server 2012,
it will not across instance to collect the error logs. So I recommend you use its original powershell scripts for the syspolicy_purge_history job.
Sometimes, if you run the syspolicy_purge_history job on a clustered instance, the syspolicy_purge_history SQL Server Agent job may fail due to using the computer node name instead of the virtual server name. For more information, see:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955726/en-us
In addition, you can use different service account for your multiple SQL Server instances on the same Server. And make sure the accounts that you created get added to the sysadmin fixed server role, the accounts are also set in the three Agent roles (SqlAgentUserRole,
SqlAgentReaderRole, and SqlAgentOperatorRole).

SQL Server 2012 Express error 9002 while restoring a backup from 2008
Hi all,
I have installed SQL Server 2012 Express on my laptop operating with win 8. Then I took the backup in my old laptop with SQL Server 2008R Express / Windows 7 and tried to restore it to the new one.
After it restored it produced an error messaging saying that restore failed. The error code was 9002 and it says due to NOTHING. I checked the log file it is a file of 1024 kb size, not big. When I installed the SQL 2012 I disabled the autogrowth of the
log file (exactly same setting as I had with 2008) The log is not big. I tried to further shrink, no change.
Moreover the db is already there with full records, I can manipulate it. Even take a back w/o problems. What is this issue? Is it resolved?
thanksan error messaging saying that restore failed. The error code was 9002
and it says due to NOTHING. I
select *
from sys.messages
where message_id = 9002
=> "The transaction log for database '%ls' is full due to '%ls'. "
Is your disk may low on free space?

SQL Server 2012 Install Failure
I am attempting to install SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition with SP1 as a standalone installation. This is the downloaded version. en_sql_server_2012_developer_edition_with_sp1_x64_dvd_1228540
Here is my environment. Windows 7 X64, SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer Edition,
I've tried to bypass the update step by executing as: "setup.exe /ACTION=Install /UpdateEnabled=False". While this did eliminate the two KB downloads, the same error still occurred.
I've extracted the ISO to my local machine and attempted the install according to another thread. Still no joy.
I installed a hotfix recommended by another thread but still no joy. System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [August 2013]

I am doing an in-place upgrade of SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 > SQL Server 2012 SP1, both 64-bit, installed on Windows Server 2008 R2.

SQL Server 2012 DB Engine does not start (clean install with server 2012 and 2008 R2)
I'm trying to do clean installation of SQL server 2012 on Server 2012 (which is runnning as a VM on ESX server) and getting this "wait on the DB engine recovery failed" message. Initially, I though this issue was related to some permission issues
but changing the permission or service accounts didn't help. I'm not seeing any "denied" messages in the log files either. Even with Server 2008 R2 (clean built VM), the installation gives the exactly the same error messages.
My setup is purely for test purpose; so, the security is not a concern. Can someone help or give me a clue where to look?

(01) 2014-05-28 17:17:28 Slp: Parameter 6 : 0x9C5770A6Hi Nababoya:
As you are telling this is a test installation process...
In the logs i m seeing the error message "An error occurred while processing the log for database 'model'. If possible, restore from backup. If a backup is not available, it might be necessary to rebuild the log.".
1) If the SQL Services was installed successfully and SQL Service was not able to start because of model database issue...
1.1) If you have model database SQL back file, start the SQL Server in single user mode with minimum configuration and try to restore MODEL database
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqlserverfaq/archive/2011/05/11/inf-hey-my-sql-server-service-is-not-starting-what-do-i-do.aspx
1.2) If you don't have backups., try to rebuild the system databases but make sure that you are not losing any data critical data on master and SQL Jobs on MSDB
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd207003%28v=sql.110%29.aspx#RebuildProcedure
2) As if this is a new installation try to repair the instance with the help of setup media file
3) If the repair option fails., the last option wipe out the complete SQL Server components from Services.msc and Registries and start new installation.
4) Make sure when you are doing un-installation all the required SQL Server components on services.msc should be in stop state.
Hope this helps and let me know any questions...

I was running SQL Server 2012 in Win 7 64 bit OS. Some how I found SQLSERVER server is not running and I was not able to run the service. Then I tried to unisntall and install again. And I found that some of the SQL Server
features got failed, like: Reporting Services - Native, Database Engine Services, Data Quality Services, Full-Text and Semantic Extractions for Search and SQL Server Replication. I checked the Summary.txt
file from location C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\Log. It thsi logs referes to another log file location like:
Feature: Database Engine Services
Status: Failed: see logs for details
Reason for failure: An error occurred during the setup process of the feature.
Next Step: Use the following information to resolve the error, and then try the setup process again.

Please advice. I searched many places and did not get actual solution that will resolve my case.
Nusrat AkhterHi Nusrat Akhter,
According to your description, when installing the first install failed, and it looks like the instance did not uninstall completely. To solve the issue I recommend you changed the instance name in re-installing SQL Server, and check if it can work fine.
There is a similar issue that the SQL engine will not start, and there is no method of uninstalling either it, or any of the components etc. You can review the following post.

I would like to add that if you see summary.txt file you would see
Message:
Unable to generate a temporary class (result=1).
error CS0009: Metadata file 'c:\Windows\assembly\GAC_MSIL\System\2.0.0.0__b77a5c561934e089\System.dll' could not be opened -- 'File is corrupt'

You can see file is corrupt. So either you have to download the setup file again or there can be chance that Antivirus caused some issue.
Plus if you see starting of summary.txt you could see
Requested action: LandingPage
The error message came while landing page was being loaded/or was in action so again I think it is some thing related to corrupt media or antivirus.
Please
1. Download ISO file again and extract using WINRAR, don't use Winzip
2. Disable Antivirus.
3. Make a new folder and extract installable there.

Unable to upgrade SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012 SP1
I'm encountering error after error, after successfully installing the upgrade advisor (which took some doing) and running it with essentially no warnings/errors (the one warning was on the connection strings, as I recall -- and all of the warnings had a
"fix after" status.
First failure involved SSRS and the inability to create the "managed account". Backed out the upgrade using http://sqldbanotes.blogspot.com/2013/10/how-to-fix-failed-in-place.html
Now the failure involves SSAS and unable to connect to analysis services with name MSSQLServerOLAPService. That is the logical name for the service, although it shows up as just MSSQLServer when looking at it in the services list. I tried
setting the service account to a local account as well as to Local System -- did not make a difference, the upgrade couldn't apparently find it regardless.
Has anybody successfully done an in place upgrade from SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012?Hi Bob,
Thanks for your post and I am glad to hear that the issue is resolved. Thanks for you posting a reply to share your solution and I had marked it as answer. That way, other community members could benefit from your sharing.
