Restore files from Backup

Hi, I'm having problems restoring from the Backup I made in Tiger to Leopard.
I did a full backup onto an external drive of my iPhoto, iTunes, Mail, iCal and Address Book using Backup which is part of the .Mac bundle.
I have 70 gig of 'backup' files from Part 1 to Part 18 on my external hard drive.
I have installed Backup 3 onto my fresh copy of Leopard ..... but when I run a restore of the Backup files it only lets me select one "part" of the backup files not all 18 in one go and then it says:
"This backup does not contain a full restore catalog"
"If you choose to restore from this backup, you will only be able to restore files contained in this backup".
It then takes me through the process of "ticking" the boxes for the files i wish to restore and then scans all 70 gig but when it tries to copy it fails. ie: Failed Restore.
Any ideas how to get the 70 gig back onto my mac?
Cheers

Two things - Is the version of Backup the very latest from Apple?
I would suggest working backwards - I know it sounds like a lot of work.
Install Tiger on another computer, using the exact user/admin names/passwords
Install the original version of Backup you used on Tiger.
See what happens.
As an aside, and as you are finding out, Backup is not a very satisfactory way of backing up.
I use Superduper and CarbonCopy which make a bootable clone which you can test beforehand.
I believe that Backup encrypts the files - at least it does when you use iDisk, so you may not be able to easily get into the files, directly.
As I say, the easiest way to attempt a recovery is to go backwards, to Tiger.
I hope you will be able to recover the files.
Some other user here might have a better idea.
I am sure that there is a way to get them - it's a matter of finding it.

  • Restore Files from Backup on Vista Home Premium ; HP Pavilion m8120n

    Hello,
I backed up files on HP personal media drive M:HP8120 and did a full System Recovery on my HP Pavilion m8120n. Now when I attempt to restore files from a backup made on this computer, the message says there are no backups available on this computer.  I tried advanced restore/Restore files from backup made on another computer or restore files for all users on this computer.  I can see the file in Select the Backup set to restore window.  I select the file and in the next window, select the date to restore from, I get the message “Backup location is not available.”  If I click next, in the select the files and folders to restore window, nothing is listed.  However, I get the opportunity to restore everything in this backup -- add files, add folders, etc. If I click add folders, I don’t see drive M: but I see drive C: and D:.
At this point I am at a loss.  Can anyone shed light on my situation?

Thanks for the info. It appears that your Time-Warner router is serving a public IP address.
My suggestion is to use the D-Link wireless-router for your local LAN (connect the Time-Warner to the WAN input of the D-Link). If you're concerned about speed issues, you can connect your laptop into the LAN bridge of the D-Link.
If you're worried about speed, you can do a simple before and after experiment to see if the D-link is degrading your I/O throughput. I've used sites speedtest.net with good success in troubleshooting bandwidth issues.

  • Cannot restore files from backup

I'm attempting to restore some files from backups on one of my PC's.
If I attempt to access the "Restore files or folders for the computer" from the Essentials server I get the following:
If I launch the dashboard on the PC that I want to restore the files to, I also get an error message.
Not sure why I'm getting that message above when launching the Dashboard from the Launchpad. I can run the Dashboard from my *.remotewebaccess.com site with the same username/password.
How can I get access to the backups to restore the files?

The restore should indeed be done on the PC the files are from (Which i think is a bad implementation) anyway,
Please check the following registry key on the Server:
    HLKM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\TSAppAllowList
It should be set to a 1.

  • Restoring Files from Backup - Firewire Drive

    Hello!
I recently performed a complete re-install of Tiger on my iMac G5, and it is working nicely now. I used SuperDuper to back up the my hard drive to an external firewire drive before doing the install.
Here is my issue: When I try to copy files from the firewire onto my internal hard drive, I get this message: "One or more items have special permissions and cannot be copied. Do you want to skip them?" For example, I received that message when I tried to copy SuperDuper from the firedrive into my internal drive.
I do not want to bring everything from the backup onto my machine since I believe it was software that might have caused my issues which led to reformatting to begin with.
Is there a way to bypass this error? A key combination, perhaps?
    Thank you for your time!

For apps, I would reinstall from the source. There may have been corruption over time. Most Mac OS X app files are not single files at all, but a package, which is like a folder. You can look inside by right (control) clicking on an app and select +Show Package Contents+. Some apps that use an installer program may also place support files at +Library/Application Support/+, both at the root level and user account level; you may not know about those files. Also, there may be a newer version available (for downloads) that you didn't even know about.
However, for the apps that were drag-and-drop installations, it should be OK to do the same from your backup, if you don't want give your apps a fresh start along with the OS reinstall on a blank volume.
FYI, there is a way to get a fresh Mac OS X system without reinstalling apps, or even restoring your user data. You use the +Archive and Install+ option in the Mac OS X Installer. This will retain user accounts and settings, as well as third-party apps, while installing a fresh system. You should still backup your data as a precaution (since something bad could happen), but your data should still be there when you restart into the fresh system. Your installed non-Apple apps should also be there, although you may need to reinstall or re-register some apps. The bundled Apple apps get reinstalled.
As for your immediate permissions issue, try copying it from the external drive into the Shared user folder at Users/Shared/. If that works, try moving it from there into your user account folder

  • HT4859 how can i restore files from backup after i reset my ipod touch?

I rebooted my ipod touch how can i restore my back up files

    Welcome to the Apple community.
Rebooting your device is not the same as restoring it, to restore a device go to settings > general > reset > erase all contents and settings. Once you do this you will then be given the option to restore it from a backup or as a new iPod.

  • How to Restore Files From Backup HD/Time Machine

I want to restore data from external HD, which backed up with Time Machine, onto new internal HD. If I restore from date prior to 10.6.1 upgrade (which resulted in HD failure) will I be restoring from 10.5? Do I install Leopard on new HD first? Both internal and external HDs corrupted by upgrade but professional diagnostics indicate data on external HD can be accessed.

Could you explain a little more about what you meant by this? The update to 10.6.1 should not corrupt an otherwise OK HD. It is probably worth the effort to try to figure out what caused this in case it is something that would continue to affect the HD's after the restore.

  • Restore files from last Time Machine backup after HD erase and install

I just had to do an "erase and install" ... trying to restore files from my last Time Machine backup but after completing the Airport Utility setup / configure steps, it says "waiting to restart" for a few minutes and then says it cannot find TIme Capsule after restart (though TC never restarted). I'm pretty desperate to get my files back as it's Sunday night and my business needs to be up and running by morning. Any help would be greatly appreciated ... even if it's saying I need to take TC into a Mac store to have them retrieve my files.

While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.

Where is the data file for the address book located, I need to restore mine from backup but don't know where it is to do so.  Putting my Mac Pro onto icloud synching contacts resulted in duplicate and triplicates of the same cards.  I have a few THOUSAND contacts and the last time this happened was on mobile me.  that had a function where you could replace info on the mobile me server with info on the computer.  I see no way to do that on the new cloud.

In the stupidly hidden user's Library->/Application Support/AddressBook/ labeled as AddressBook-v22.abcddb
For TM restores, see Pondini's TM FAQs for starters, since I don't use TM.

Reinstalled maverick on Mac mini 2010 now can't restore files from previous backups can't even roll back to previous setup

    This is typical Mavericks.
Was the old backup taken from Mavericks install?
Did you already start TM from the new install and thus totally foul up and corrupt your old backup?
You will need to try migrate assistant.. and if that fails you will need to manually pull your files from the old backup if you can still access them.

  • Restoring files from Time Machine after installing Maverick

I have an older MacBook Pro and while installing Maverick my aged hard drive gave out. I got a new hard drive installed by an authorized Mac dealer and now I'm trying to restore files from Time Machine. I haven't done anything at all yet with Maverick. I followed the Migration Assistant directions and have the backup connected to my laptop. The backup icon appeared on my desktop. I hit continue and followed directions and reached the point where it said "looking for source" and there is a spinning ball. That was an hour ago. Is it just taking a long time to sort through the large volume of material in my Time Machine backup, or is something wrong? What should I be doing, if anything? Thank you for your help.

  • How can I restore files from a time machine back-up of my iMac to an EXTERNAL hard drive connected to MacBook Pro. Using Migrat

I would like to restore files from a time machine back-up of my iMac to an EXTERNAL hard drive connected to MacBook Pro. When I tried using Migration Assistant it only gives me my internal hard drive as an option to restore to. The internal hard drive on my macbook isnt large enough to store the files.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
OS X can only restore data to the drive where Time Machine backed up files from.
If you want to restore files from the Time Machine backup onto an external drive, your only option is to access to the Time Machine drive manually (open a Finder window and choose your Time Machine drive in the Finder sidebar), navigate through its folders and copy the files you want to the external drive

  • How to restore files from Time Machine after Clean Install of Mavericks

How to restore files from Time Machine after Clean Install of Mavericks. I know the data is there but seems unaccessable because I may have changed the Computer or Owner name. Is there any way to fix that now?

    Hi Linc,
my back-up data is managed by Time Machine; the actual data is on a second internal Hard Drive with a capacity of 1TB - not partitioned. I am using Time Machine and have access to all data backed up since Mavericks Clean Install but not the data prior to this date.
When I open the 1TB drive in Finder I can see a folder "Backups.backupdb/Sigi's Mac Pro/ followed by many folders of backup dates going back to 2010-09-20-103441 and up to 2014-02-07-142414 all followed with folder Macintosh HD.  February 7th  2014 was the date of the clean install.
These Backups are followed by backup date folder 2014-02-08-075554 with a subfolder of MacPro-320GB (this is the name I assigned to my Boot Drive during formatting; I suspect I should have assigned the same name as before ie. Macintosh HD) and 2014-02-11 with a subfolder Macintosh HD, these are the ones I get access to by way of Time Machine > Restore.
Weird thing is on Febr 11 when I relised my possible mistake and renamed the Bootdrive back to what it was initially ie. Macintosh HD despite this I have access to all backup data since the Clean Install in both folders MacPro-320GB as well as Macintosh HD but not to any data prior to the Clean Install.
Is there something that Time Machine knows and prevents access or is it simply a matter of renaming the subfolder 2014-02-08-07554/MacPro-320GB to ........./Macintosh HD?
I like to restore selectively and not everything - It was hard work reinstalling apps that were supposed to be the troublemakers (ref my discussion on Maverick problems) but I now need to get onto data specific to some of these apps as well as other data I may have missed. Long story? Yes and sorry.
    Sigi
