Restore Finder/Window Settings
I accidentally hit the "sort by date" for my desktop when I intended to use it for one window.
Now my desktop is "sorted" by date. The problem is that my desktop had previously been sorted using a scheme that made sense to me but wasn't something Mac OSX can do with a menu item.
So, is there any way to restore the previous arrangement? Can I copy an older .DS_Store file from a backup? Revert the desktop folder only from a previous backup and then restore the two or three items that have changed since then?
I have about 250 items on my desktop, so restoring the order manually is a bit of a pain.

Eh, I didn't bother doing that. I just sorted the "temporary" desktop items into various folders to cut down on the RAM/CPU/GPU drain (computer seems faster now, hurrah) and put the remaining items in place semi-manually.
Semi-manually, as in I booted from a backup (the permanent items have always been there and always will!), took a screenshot of the desktop, copied it to my internal hard drive, and set it as the background picture to use as a guide for putting everything in place.
Yes, I can be VERY obsessive about exactly how my desktop is arranged.
PS— if you try to move a .DS_Store file into a new folder in Finder, it just says: "The item '.DS_Store' can't be replaced because it's invisible." I haven't tried deleting the .DS_Store file already present and replacing it before it respawns or using Terminal or otherwise to make the move instead of Finder.

'save as' finder window settings and size (on mac)
Hi there ~
Whenever saving/downloading any type of file from any firefox tab, and the 'save as' window opens and I choose where I want the file to be downloaded to, the finder window columns are really tight and narrow, cutting off the folder names so I constantly have to stretch out that first column so I can see the folder names .. this only happens in firefox and the finder window is always squooshed, even if I adjust it and then close/relaunch firefox .. how can I permanently set the finder window settings to avoid having to manually adjust it each time?

Probably not the only one... the OS 9 Finder way did slow things down a bit. But it may be a helpful feature for some. Best if you could activate or not. You can file a feature request here Mac OS X Feedback

Finder window settings not "sticking" after restart (boot drive only)
I have an annoying problem with the finder window only on the boot drive not holding whatever settings (list view) I give it after a restart. Odd part of it is that it reverts to some old settings I had at one time in icon view. When I switch back to list view I get a view with the library folder opened. I figure there is some corrupt setting somewhere, I deleted the desktop db for that folder with no luck. I have no problem on any other drives.

navigate to ~(yourhome)/library/preferences and trash these two files:
com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then log out and back in again.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

Finder Window Does not retain custom size and/or view
I recently installed OS X Snow Leopard and ever sine I have had problems with the behaviour of my finder windows in that they simply will not retain my custom view settings.
+For example, I set the default view to coverflow with a 50/50 ratio of coverflow (on top) and file lists (on the bottom). But as soon as I click to another location, close and then reopen any finder window, at any time, the result is always the same - the window opens in coverflow with the coverflow graphics taking up around 90% of the window space and the file lists underneath squeezed down to minimum size. Even if I set all windows to open in icon view or list view, the same thing happens.+
*I have tried all of the following:*
Opening a finder window, resizing, and then closing it straight away
Deleting the both the finder and the side bar plist files, emptying the trash and then restarting finder
Restarting finder on its own
*Is anyone having the same problem and if so have they found a solution?*This problem affects a few of my Finder windows, including the Application folder window. I recently did a clean reinstall of SL (which stands for Stupid Lunatic, because that's what I was for upgrading), and the problem occurred a few days later. This cannot be due to using Migration Assistant (and moving "bad" folders), because the installation process creates the Applications folder and populates it with Apples apps. Migration Assistant just adds your apps to the existing folder.
This problem, or minor variations of it, has occurred with all seven major versions of OS X. Finder window settings were rock solid way back in OS 7 days and remained so through OS 9. I know that Steve Jobs hates the Desktop/Finder approach, but if it's going to be in OS X, then it should work correctly. I actually long for the days when rebuilding the desktop fixed most of the icon and window problems.
We need a utility that can erase the custom settings for our folders and let us start with a clean settings file. -
Hide time capsule finder window at login
Bit of background info first:-
I've been using iTunes on windows for a long time and have my whole library stored onto a time capsule. I had windows map the time capsule drive so that it auto connected to the drive at windows start up and then itunes would imediately have access to the content when i launch it.
So onto the question:-
I have recently bought an iMac as i much prefer their systems to that of windows. As my iTunes library is alreday on my time capsule i decided the sensible thing to do was simply get iTunes on the iMac to use that storage so told iTunes to use the time capsule drive for the library got it to organise it etc. I also added the time capsule drive to log in items so that it auto connects to the drive when i start up the mac so that i don't get the broken links in iTunes. This all works fine but it means everytime i "login" i have a finder windows which contains my iTunes files on my Time Capsule so was wondering is there anyway to either map the drive like windows so it auto connects but doesn't have to show me the contents of the folder or simply get mac to hide the folder when it starts up so i don't have to see the finder window everytime i log in?
CheersOK, so I fixed it.
I started deleting my personal user prefs files (in Users>me>Library>Preferences. One at a time at first with no joy, so I got annoyed and deleted a whole raft of com.apple prefs. I ditched my login prefs in the process so I had to change those back, (login as me automatically - easy fix).
Due to my zealousness All of my login items bar except Logitech Daemon got killed, which were the usual denizens, itunes helper etc, and I lost a couple of window view settings, again no biggie.
I pretty much singled out anything pref file that may be related to login, finder, window settings etc. I'm guessing that I found an old or rogue pref lurking amongst the pile I removed, couldn't say which one I'm afraid!
So (if your still having problems), that's a possible fix for you to try confroy, just be careful what you delete from your prefs folder, I limited myself to com.apple files. -
How to restore iphone/ipod icon in Finder window?
I accidentally deleted my ipod icon a while back and now can't seem to restore the icon in the finder window even with my new iphone. How can I restore this? I can find the files on the ipod and iphone in other applications (ie. itunes and iphoto) but just not in the finder.
Thank you.You can restore the iPod icon by doing a "reset home screen layout" on the Iphone. Go to Settings ->General -> Reset -> Reset Home Screen Layout. It will come back

Find photos from iphone after restore to original settings
So I was having issues after upgrading to OS4 and decided to follow advice to restore to factory settings. This did solve my issues with being able to edit contacts, but it presented a new issue.
I did do a backup of the phone before the restore, but I did not think to import my camera roll photos into iPhoto.
I just checked in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup to see if I could somehow grab the camera roll photos out of the backup, but was surprised that the only back up that looks to be in there is from after the restore. Is it possible to find an earlier backup to get the photos from? And if so, do I have to restore the phone to that backup or is there some other way to maybe just import the photos to iPhoto or open them with another application? It looks like all the files in the backup are text files.
I looked at a Time Machine backup but that was from an iphone backup about a week ago so there were newer pictures.
Any help would be appreciated.I think to harvest the camera roll photos from the backup requires you to restore the iphone off the OLD backup, import the camera roll, then restore the iphone off the newer backup to get it back the way you want it.
There are various third-party iPhone Backup Extractors that should be able to pull the photos from the backup file, just FYI. Both Mac and Windows. Of course, since iTunes overwrote the backup file the OP wanted, doesn't really help in this case.
You can manually move the backup files before doing any kind of major syncing, etc, for future needs. -
MY computer was restored to factory settings. Is there a way to get my previous itunes library back? I don't have an Ipod or other device that I saved my itunes library to.
Restore the media from the backup of the computer.
If it was simply restored via the Windows restore point, no data on the computer should have been affected.
If the computer was formated and Windows re-installed, no data remained on the computer and will have to be added back by the user. -
Starting from the finder window of an Air model laptop (OSX 10.8.5) were do I find 'Select Settings' to access review and update of the Apple TV hardware I just spent eight hours trying to set up?
I believe those instructions are for the Apple TVand not the MacBook Air.

How do I get Finder windows to hold their settings?
Reading in other discussions, I see some folks are having problems with desktop icons moving around. My desktop icons are fine and stay put, but my Finder windows continually rearrange themselves to whatever random design Lion wants to give them.
They will not retain size, toolbar on / off, arrange by / sort by, icon size or grid spacing etc. For a while I thought I had the problem sorted by leaving the main User window open when I shut down at night, but this 'solution' didn't hold either.
I have worked my way through the View options, tried resetting defaults etc etc, but either there's nothing I can do about it (bug?) or I am missing something simple.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. TIAI have this problem too, and it's maddening. My latest effort fo fix it has been to make .DS_Store read only using the Terminal. This will work for directories that you never alter; I did it to my home directory. If you do it to directories that change, the results will be undefined, because the Finder will be unable to write changes to the .DS_Store file reflecting the position of the new files.
To do this, open Terminal in /Applications/Utilities, and then type:
cd "/Path/to/directory/to/fix"
Replace the path with the folder you need to fix. If you're not sure what it is, you can just type "cd " (without the quotes, but note the space after the letters 'cd') and then drag the folder you want to fix onto the Terminal window. Then press return.
Now, type:
chmod 444 .DS_Store
Make sure you include the period at the beginning of the .DS_Store name. Press return. This will effectively lock the .DS_Store file and prevent the Finder from screwing it up. Your icon positions and window settings will be fixed in place until you make the .DS_Store file writable again. To do that, repeat Step 1 above, and change Step 2 as follows:
chmod 644 .DS_Store
That will return the .DS_Store file to its original state and undo the changes you made.
I have tested this only on my home directory, which never changes. Doing this to directories to which files are added and removed will result in undefined behavior. It will not damage your computer or your files, but Finder windows for that directory will not behave in a predictable fashion. -
How to make default settings for a new Finder window ?
Will, i am abit ashamed to ask this question cause it's problaby very basic OSX knowledge.
However, since using 10.0 , i never have find a solution ..
What i want is this:
EVERY new Finder window i open, be it with the keycommand (CMD)+N, or double clicking a Folder a disk icon, has to be shown to me in only 1 way
which i have setup beforehand.
I am talking bout: List view only, with specified columns ("date added" for example etc) in a vast specific order.
For these settings, i open one finder window, setup the "view options" for that window, re-arrange the columns, then do: save as default"
Now, i would say that next time i open a new finder window, (keycommand (CMD)+N, or double clicking a Folder a disk icon), it defaults to the settings i made above.
But nada.
OSX has always intuitive for me but this issue scratches my brains.

Even the order of the columns is retained
However, i wish the (CMD)+J settings would apply for ANY Finder window you open, not just ones that are in the same directory.

I find it annoying that, if I have a finder window with several open tabs and I close the whole window at once, the next time I click the finder it will open up that same window with multiple tabs I don't need anymore instead of my default location. I've looked all over for a way to turn off this behavior, any ideas?
ok, first of all I haven't given up on you yet.
I just restarted my computer and had reopen files checked, the settings remained the same.
I restarted without remember open windows checked and the setting is still the same.
I hit cmd n multiple times and the setting still opens my finder window to the specified folder.
So this is a bug and worthy of calling apple support about fixing it for you.
also feel free to make some feedback so they might know to fix it.

Try resetting the iPad by holding the home and power keys down until the Apple logo appears.

Finder Window Won't Pop Up / Restore

The sequence of events is this:
Use the Finder
Minimise the Finder window, clicking on the Orange blob
Click on the Finder in the dock to bring back the window - doesn't appear
Click on the Finder window menu, see screen shot
If I click on the window with the diamond (called "aImages" above) the window will appear
If I click on the WIndow with the check mark/tick, the window will not appear
I also get this with Safari too.
Things I tried:
Keep up to date with Mavericks
Clean Mavericks install - I wiped my Machine and restored just the apps I used and dumped all the accumulated junk

Only half of video is imported into itunes
I clicked on 'file', then 'add file to library' and clicked on a home video. It imported it into my library as such - but only half of it. The video stops playing (in iTunes) exactly halfway through it. When I play the video using Windows Media Playe
