Restore from leopard onto lion?

I have (had) a 2008 black MacBook that was running snow leopard. I backed my computer up regularly with time machine. I recently installed lion however did not back up my computer after install. Yesterday my computer was stolen. If I buy a new MacBook with lion, how should I go about restoring my data? I really don't care about settings or programs, most were out of date anyway.  However I would like my music documents and photos (files etc). Suggestions, comments, sympathies???

Here are some in-depth instructions to help decide:

  • How can I change my OS from Leopard to Lion?, How can I change my OS from Leopard to Lion?

Now, with the IOS6 fro iPhone, I have got problems to sync my phone with my computer. It says that I am not using a compatible version of OS or something alike.
I am using Leopard and everytime I select "update sofware" it says I have already got the most updated. Same happens when I do for iTunes versions.
I just realized that I can't use "app store" in my compueter neither. Everytime I try to download it, it says I haven't got the version compatible.
I guess it's time to change from Leopard to Lion, but as I haven't got the app store istalled in my computer I don't know what to do or if there is another solution to do it.
    Anyone can help?
    Cheers

You have to upgrade to 10.6.8 to be able to download  10.7 Lion. The Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD should still be available from Apple for $20. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775 to purchase it. It may still be in the Legacy Products list. The App Store which is required to download 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion is part of the 10.6.6 update.
If they no longer have any in stock you will have to buy it from eBay or Apple resellers that still have stock. But you will have to pay a premium since the DVDs are no longer being made. Snow Leopard DVDs are already up to $100 on Amazon.

Once you are at 10.6.8 Lion is still available from Apple. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. to purchase it. Then within 3 days you will get an email with a code which you can use to download Lion from the App Store.
Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly. As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.7 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

I want to give an iPad to my wife to use for work, but her employer won't let her upgrade her Macbook from Leopard to Lion.  It's pointless if she can't use iCloud.  Is there a workaround?

So far Apple has not upgraded the other Mac OS X versions to iCloud.  She can manually enter information to be synced in the cloud but that is really tedious.

  • Is there a step by step guide on upgrading from leopard to lion inlcuding data backup and migration?

is there a step by step guide on upgrading from leopard to lion inlcuding data backup and migration?

Let me just give you the breakdown:
Snow Leopard (10.6) needs to be purchased. You need Snow Leopard because it has the Mac App StoreAlternatively, you could get the Lion USB drive, but much more expensive
Once you have installed Snow Leopard, open the Mac App Store and find OS X Lion. This downloads OS X Lion Installer. After the download finishes, click on it, follow the steps and the installation begins!
No data will be lost during any of the upgrades
Let me know if you have any further questions.

  • I upgraded from leopard to lion and my epson printer will not work. I get a communication error

I upgraded from leopard to lion and my Epson printer will not work. I get a error message comunication error. What can Ido to fix this I bought a new USB cord and it did no good.

I suddenly had the same thing happen. I've had my new iMac for 3 months and at first my Epson Artisan 50 worked okay then yesterday I started getting the same error message other people on this support site have gotten. I tried ALL the advice given (deleating the Epson files from the library folder, etc. reinstalling older software) and nothing worked. With the newest iMac (and operating system) you cannot pick and choose which version of Epson software you want. You must use the 10.8 version or it simply will not open when you've downloaded it. Finally I found the comment above by den.thed and tried the OS X Mountain Lion: Reset the printing system suggested. As much as I hated to lose all my printing presets that took a lot of expiermentation to set up, I was desperate. I tried it and it worked. Now I just have to consult my old computer and try to recreate all my printing set ups.  So to others with Epson / Apple 10.8 issues this may help when everything else fails. Thanks den.thed for your advice.

  • Best way to upgrade from Leopard to Lion?

    Hi,
I am planning to upgrade a number of computers in my household and am trying to figure out the best upgrade path for each one of them.
Specifically, my dad uses an iMac running OS 10.5.8. Due to this fact I obviously cannot upgrade it to Lion from the app store, so I will have to do a clean install - meaning erasing the hard drive.
Since I do not want my dad to reorganize his whole computer environment from scratch, I was wondering if I will be able to use Migration Assistant to restore his user with all his files, preferences and cluttered desktop from his Time Machine backup.
    Thanks

    Things to keep in mind
1: Old Rosetta PPC based programs will NOT work in Lion.
2: A machine using PowerPC processors can't upgrade to Snow Leopard or Lion, 10.5 is it.
3: A machine with Core Duo (not Core 2 Duo) processors cannot run Lion.
4: Lion is a RADICAL change, to the UI and everything, Snow Leopard is very less traumatic and offers performance tweaks in the video drivers over Leopard, as well as strips out the PPC code your not using on your Intel Mac's.
5: A machine as old to run 10.5 likely has old software, all that will likely need to be replaced under Lion, but perhaps not so much under Snow Leopard.
6: Lion is somewhat unstable, the 2011 Mac's with EFI 2.2 Firmware are being truckloaded into Apple Repair for new logicboards.
7: Lion has issues on older hardware that likely be last on the list for repairs as they are gathering information now about it's problems.
My advice, perhaps upgrade to Snow Leopard and leave Lion alone for a 2011 Mac or beyond hardware when you replace it.
Lion has got at least another YEAR of repairs ahead of it before I consider it as stable as Snow Leopard.
Everything from the AppStore, EFI firmware changes, Thunderbolt fixes and well as UI fixes, MAJOR security issues I can't disclose as well as all the third party programs requiring their fixes and updates.
Leave Lion alone for the time being, unless your a masochist.
And here's one bad security feature, anyone can hack your Mac with Lion like this.
1: Boot the Mac holding Command R keys and select the Terminal
2: Type  resetpassword  and press enter.
    That's it. No disk needed.

  • Restore from time machine (Lion)

Just installed Lion, which crashes on startup every time. So naturally I went to restore with time machine by attempting to boot using snow leopard install disc. However every time I tried to boot into CD by holding C at startup it just boots into lion which crashes. So I tried safe boot which worked and tried to boot snow leopard install disc but it says "you can't use this version of the application install mac os x with this version of mac os x" " you have install mac os  23.1." (no typos there which made me laugh). What's the point of me backing up my system if Lion won't let me restore from a crash? How are you meant to restore when the install cd doesn't boot because of Lion and your os crashes on startup? Well done apple you have made an important part of your software redundant.

I haven't made a backup yet.  I was running Snow Leopard and I just installed Lion.  I have to go back to Snow Leopard.....I don't want to use the Recovery HD because that is all Lion now.
A complete disk wipe is necessary to remove the Recovery HD partition.
Back to Snow Leopard from Lion install method
Read and print out these instructions, your computer is going to be offline and you wil be cutoff from help until your machine is restored.
Clear the Desktop, Downloads and Trash of anything you wish to keep by placing their files in the respective Documents, Music, Pictures, Movie folders.
If you have a TimeMachine drive, update it and disconnect for the duration of this restore time. It will be your second backup system and will have to be wiped and setup again after successfully going back to Snow Leopard if it was connected to the OS X 10.7 boot drive. If it wasn't, then leave it disconnected without updating to Lion. (note: I'm not a TimeMachine user, so I don't know how to restore 10.6 from this medium)
Backup ALL your Users folders (Documents, Pictures, Movies, Music etc) manually (drag and drop methods) to a (not TimeMachine) external powered drive (HFS+ journaled formatted in Disk Utility) and disconnect, your going to be wiping the entire disk of ALL DATA. (warning, everything will be gone and not recovered, OS, programs, files, Windows etc all gone.)
    Here we go!
Hold c and boot off the 10.6 installer disk that comes with your computer and second screen in just STOP.
Look at the Utilities Menu for Disk Utility.
On the left is the name of your hard drive maker, click it and Erase (format HFS+ Journaled), give it the same name as before, and click Erase...
This should wipe the drive of ALL partitions (GUID, OS X and 10.7 Recovery, Windows if present)
When it's done, quit and install OS X 10.6. Then install all your programs from fresh sources and validate/update.
When you setup a first account, use the same user name as before, this way you can simply drag and drop the content of your previous Users folders from the external drive right back into the new Users folders and everything should work peachy. Links in iTunes to music, playlists and iPhoto links especially.
Update OS X to 10.6.8 using the Combo Update for best results.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
(Note: If your original machine had 10.5 and you want the free iLife that comes with the disks with the computer, then you'll have to install 10.5 first using the same c boot/erase/format methods as above, then update to 10.6 via the disk, then Combo Update 10.6.8)
Final step optional but highly receommended.
A lot of people use a Carbon Copy Clone of their boot drive to a HFS+Journaled external drive as a "hold the option key" bootable backup in case something goes wrong with their boot drive or need to restore to a previous OS X version..  (in addition to TimeMachine drive for more immediate backups.)
It's not advised to have a Bootable Clone and a TimeMachine partition on the same external drive, as two drives gives hardware protection in case one fails.

  • Restoring from leopard to snow leopard

    Here's the situation.....
I tried upgrading to Snow leopard, but it crashed my HD. Apple replaced my HD and gave it back to me with Snow leopard already installed.
I had been backing up my info (previous to crash) to an external HD via Time Machine. They told me to have this external HD connected when I booted up for first time and it would ask me if I wanted to transfer any old info. from Time Machine. I did this, but my external HD would not come up in the list of available sources to choose from-so I just checked the "will recover files later" box and continued with opening.
SO- I essentially have a brand new Macbook with Snow Leopard installed (no pictures, no music). I want to restore a back-up from my external HD when I was using regular Leopard. Since I was using Leopard when I backed up last, and I now already have Snow leopard installed...will it be a problem?
AND...how do I do this? Isn't it smart enough to find the most recent backup by itself and restore it?

    Wahaco9 wrote:
Cool, that definitely helps....but couldn't find the part about having back-ups from an older operating system. I found this.....
"You can restore your entire system from it's backups, unless you excluded System folders (see #11 above). But do not try this full system restore from a different Mac's backups. If it boots at all, many things will likely go wrong, as the new Mac won't have the correct hardware drivers, among other things."
Since my back-ups are from an older OS, will this be like using a 'different Mac's backups?'
if you use this option it will wipe your hard drive and restore your old leopard system back. it's possible but you'd have to reinstall snow leopard on top of it afterward. right now it might be easier to just migrate provided your backups are in order which is not clear. see my post above.

  • Software Installer and wireless internet problems after upgrade from Leopard to Lion.

Last weekend I upgraded the OS on my MacBook Pro from Leopard to Snow Leopard, and then from Snow Leopard to Lion. I'm having a couple of problems.
First, I cannot get the wireless internet to work. My internet connection is fine, I can plug the ethernet cord in and all is well. But I cannot get wireless signals to work. Have tried both my Airport Express and an old linksys router, and neither seem to work. They both worked just fine before the update. I had very fast wireless internet, and now nothing.  With the Airport Express, when I plug it in iti'll just continuously blink orange, and the Airport Utility refuses to recognize it. The linksys router seems to work, because it puts off a signal and my iPhone connects to it. My computer recognizes the signal, but it won't open any internet pages, says I'm not connected.
Today I tried to install Apple's Migration Assistant software to help with my first problem.  But a funny thing happened.  The software installer says I don't have enough space. But I have plenty- I have almost 200 GB, and I only need 5 MB for the program.  I've never seen this happen before, it's so odd.  Any suggestions?
    I really appreciate any assistance/suggestions!
    Thanks,
    Ellen

You can't purchase Snow Leopard from the Mac App Store.  Or "download" it.  That will be possible for Lion.
For the Apple Online store, why can't you just look for yourself?

i run a commercial recording studio since 2009 and purchased a mac pro quad core with os x 10.5.8 and record with protools,   it has now got to the point where i can no longer purchase plugins for protools because the operating system is to old i need at least snow leopard ,i have never upgraded and am concerned about losing any previous protools sessions and plugins ,it has been suggested to me to upgrade just one of the hardrives to snow leopard or lion or the latest system and then just open a protools session on the old osx hardrive and save to the new upgraded hardrive , is this possible? or has anyone any suggestions ,many thanks

You should seriously consider establishing a Boot drive, with only System, Library, Applications, and the hidden unix files (including Paging/Swap) on it. User files are moved off to another drive.
This makes maintaining the System and maintaining your User files much easier, and it makes your Mac faster in every way.

  • Restoring from Backup onto Mountain Lion

I'm thinking about upgrading to Mountain Lion from Lion 10.7.5. Everything is backed up via Time Machine. After I install the new OS, how would restore my previous data Games, movies, video etc?

Setup Assistant should give you the option of doing this.
Unless you are planning on doing a clean install, your files shouldn't be affected.

  • Upgrade from leopard to lion?

What is the best procedure to follow to rebuild step daughters Late 2007 (825-7048-B) macbook hdrive. I've installed new hdrive (320GB from windoze laptop) and 4gb ram in her laptop. Ideally I think I'd prefer to install Lion instead of the Leopard she had previously. She has her personal files backed up ... which is awesome. Will Lion run as well or better than either Leopard? Will she lose any functionality? Will we be able to do this for only $29? I have a strong windoze (don't beat me too hard, lol), some AIX background but no OS 10/X. -Thanks

10.6 Snow Leopard came out in July of 2009 and was made obsolete in July of 2011 when 10.7 Lion was introduced. Unlike earlier Operating Systems which were removed from the Apple Store when a new OS came out Apple kept Snow Leopard around for a year until 10.8 Mountain Lion came out.
It might still be available from Apple. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775 to purchase it. It may still be in the Legacy Products list.
If they no longer have any in stock you will have to buy it from eBay or Apple resellers that still have stock. But you will have to pay a premium since the DVDs are no longer being made. Snow Leopard DVDs are already up to $100 on Amazon.
