Restore from RAW
Hi,
I have installed a database on a RAW file system.
Now, my database got crash..
How can I takeoout all the DBF files from that raw system to a normal filesystem?
Regards,
Indraneel
Hi,
This is the famous Unix dd command.
<quote from Metalink Note 120934.1>
Copying raw devices to filesystem
This can be tricky because we must
offset the header block for the raw device. You will need to contact the OS
vendor to find out how large the OS header block for the raw device is so that
it can be offset with the skip command. Also make bs equal to a multiple of
db_block_size (setting to equal db_block_size is recommended)
% dd if=/dev/<raw device> of=/path/<dbf> bs=<BlockSize> skip=
<SkipInputBlocks> count=<# of blocks (bs) in the datafile used by oracle
(optional)>Regards,
Yoann.

Hi
If I take the rman backup of one tablespace which have raw device datafiles.
Can I restore this tablespace as a file system in other database? In 10g/11g database version you can do it by transportable tablespace.
Go to this link:
http://oracleonline.info/transport_10gdba.html
It will help.

Restoring my RAW files from the Vault.
I keep my Aperture photo files on an external hard drive and back them up in the Vault after every import. This external drive just crashed. I have a replacement drive and want to restore these files from the Vault and be able to use them. I called Apple support last night and he had me make a copy of the old disk (this took several hours and fortunately, I finished JUST before the old drive crashed!), but when I plug the new drive in, Aperture doesn't recognize the files as Masters so I can't modify them. How can I restore these files so that I can once again work with them?
Do you have a referenced Aperture library? Then the vault will only contain the library with the version previews, but not your master files. Those you will have to restore from your regular backup of your master files.
From the Aperture manual:
All masters for managed images, all versions, and all metadata, previews, and adjustment information associated with your images are backed up. The versions, previews, and metadata associated with referenced masters are also backed up in the vault.
Important: Referenced masters are not backed up in the vault with the library. Because the masters for referenced images are stored outside of the library, you must manage the backup and archiving of them yourself.
So, please explain in more detail the setup of your Aperture library, referenced or managed; if referenced, where both the library and the masters on the external disk that crashed?
If the master files were on the external disk, then you will have to tell Aperture the new location of the referenced masters on the new copy of your disk - with "File -> Locate Referenced Files" -
Restored from Vault - extra images appear?
First some background:
I was having stability problems with 1.5 so I decided to back it out.
I backed up the app and library and then deleted them.
I installed all the various versions till I was back up to 1.1.2.
Then I restored a vault that I had updated just prior to my 1.5 upgrade. (So the vault was completely up to date)
After the restore was finished I noticed images showing grey boxes insead of thumbnails. (Although the thumbnails would rebuild when I selected the image)
I switched to the Library "All Images" view to see if this was true of all images where I noticed my problem.
Problem:
- There are a bunch of JPG images named FILENAME - Version 2 that show up in the "All Images" view. These images appear to be the .JPG sidecars that got imported with my .NEFs when I imported a folder of images. However, before I could have sworn that the .JPG that corresponded to a .NEF did not show up in Aperture.
The .JPGs don't appear in the album view (Which is where the .NEF+.JPG's were originally imported into).
Is there anyway I can prevent the restore from vault from creating these new versions of the .JPG's?
Aperture also won't even load some of these .JPG's. It only loads the embedded thumbnail and "Loading..." stays on the screen. Not sure why, because preview loads them just fine. I don't think I care about this part since I don't want them.Apparently no one cares, but I figured it out myself.
It's a bug with Aperture
The Vault does not restore correctly if it contains images that had both a Master Raw and Master JPEG.
If you try to restore a vault that has images that were imported with both a raw file and a jpeg file the restore will create multiple versions of the image. One for the raw file and one for the jpeg instead of only having one image that contains both the master raw file and master jpeg.
To reproduce:
- Import a folder of images that contains pictures that had both a raw image and a jpeg.
For instance:
DSC_2428.NEF
DSC_2428.jpg
- Take a note of how many images are in your library.
- Create a vault
- Update the vault so that it contains all the pictures.
- Go to the File menu and select Vault->Restore Library...
- Select the Vault that you just created.
- Continue the vault restore process until it has completed.
- Now look at your Aperture library. You will see that you have twice the number of files as the jpeg's will show up as additional files with "- Version 2" after the filename. -
Clonning from RAW file system to Coocked using RMAN ..Possible ?
One of our customer wants(For a project) to migrate their 9.2.0 database from one machine to another using a physical standby. Their current production machine uses RAW files for the Oracle datafiles. On the new machine (what will originally be the physical standby) they want to use filesystems (eg cooked files).
The process (very basically) will be :
1. backup production
2. restore production to new server
3. establish physical standby
4. switchover/failover to standby
5. Former standby is now production
The question is, assuming that the backups are being taken with RMAN, is it possible to restore the datafiles to cooked filesystems (given the original backups were taken from raw)? Are there any additional steps or gotchas we have to watch out for when doing this? Do you have any documentation which details how to clone a database in this way?

Restoring from a time machine backup question
Hi!
I have done several time machine restores before (every occassion has been restoring to a fresh install of the OS) and have had no problems. But i have a question about what will happen in the following situation:
I plan to install Lion on my mac which has 2 hard drives: 1 has the OS, apps, and media cache; and the other just has raw footage and project files. My Time Machine disk backs up BOTH hard drives. What I am going to do is erase my OS hard drive and do a fresh install of Lion and then restore all my data and files to it using Time Machine (I always do a fresh install when changing OS because it eliminates problems and works fine when restoring from Time Machine). But my question is: what Time Machine will do about the secondary hard drive when it is restoring since I am not going to erase it? and the Time Machine has a back up of it.
Since I have done it before, I know what options Time Machine gives you when restoring, but they are irrelivent to this issue since I have files on both hard drives.
Thanks!soccomp wrote:

Do you mean use Setup Assistant when your Mac boots up to transfer everything but OSX (via this window)?:
(That's the Snow Leopard version; the Lion version is a bit different.)
If so, that will transfer only from the backups of the OSX partition. Time Machine keeps the backups for each drive/partition separate, and only presents the ones with OSX on them here.
I always do a fresh install when changing OS because it eliminates problems
Such problems are fairly unusual. Most folks do just fine by simply upgrading "in place."
And unless you bought a Lion OSX USB thumb drive, or have another Snow Leopard bootable volume, you'll have a problem: you must use Snow Leopard to download Lion from the App Store, so you can't erase the drive first. -
Upgrading to Lion - restoring from Time Machine
So - I updated my MacBook Pro yesterday - and when I went in to play around with photostream in Aperture - I realized most of my images were missing. (I restored from a TM backup after a clean install of Lion) The thumbnail outlines were there - but if you clicked on them you got nothing. I can manually go get them by locating the referenced files - but that's time consuming process. So I have two questions.
1. Is there a faster method to get all of my images back - and what could I be missing? Will the RAW images still be associated with those .jpgs?
2. How do I avoid this situation when I upgrade my iMac which I plan to do as soon as I figure this out.
Thanks
I should also add that I don't use the default Aperture Library file - I import into my own file structure.Yes - I have to do that project by project - I was hoping there was a bulk method. Also - I have one project - for which that's not working and I'm not sure why - I'm wondering if I might have imported those from iPhoto when I first started using Aperture since the file names have .importing in the name.
I was hoping to avoid having to do this all over again when I update the iMac to Lion - which has even more images and projects.
Do you think if I chose to do migration assistant from my SuperDuper clone - that it would avoid this issue? -
AP 2 doesn't support restoring from 1.5 Vaults
I had an AP 1.5 Library containing JPG images only (no raw files), and one project, containing folders and a book. I had this library backed up to vault. I installed AP 2. I restored this vault into AP 2. AP lost 100% of my data: images, project, folders, and book. I was left with a completely empty library. This is 100% data loss. It appears AP 2 just isn't backward compatible. It doesn't support 1.5 JPGs, it cannot properly upgrade 1.5 libraries, and it cannot restore 1.5 vaults.
See related post:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6699965#6699965
I'm headed to the Apple Store right now to return AP 2. I burned months with AP problems on the 1.0 release...not this time around. Consumers should not be alpha testers.
BThanks for the reply.

Bradley,
After reading this and your other thread, might I suggest you have a different problem - you have a broken 1.5 library. If it doesn't upgrade, restore-from-vault, or otherwise work, I'd blame the library first.
...except that it works just fine in 1.5. And if it were corrupt, it seems that it would raise the question of how one could successfully create a vault without any errors if the library were corrupt in the first place. And finally, if this is the problem, then take your pick ... AP 1.5 corrupts libraries without any outward signs or indication that it has done this?
Complete Newbie wrote:
I assure you that I have restored a 1.5 vault with 2.0; and I'm not alone - there are countless reports of people doing just that after purchasing 2.0 if you look in the forums around the launch-date. I don't have any problems with JPEG images either (whether from 1.5 or 2.0). It was certainly backwards-compatible for me.
Glad to hear it has worked for some. Unfortunately, I'm not working with your images, on your hardware configuration, with software purchased with your money. So the fact that others are working fine doesn't lend any comfort to the fact that I've experienced 100% data loss, and the product is unusable.
Complete Newbie wrote:
Did you try reporting the problem to Apple ? Perhaps even offering to send them the problem vault ? It sounds like a small vault (only 100 JPEG images). Even if it's corrupted, they may be able to recover your photos.
Yes, I reported both problems to Apple as a bug report. Unfortunately, I learned the hard way the first time around with AP 1.0 -- it may be months or never before this problem is addressed. I've run through this whole cycle now twice, with exactly the same results both times. I'm going to try one more thing: uninstalling AP 2 and reinstalling AP 1.5, and trying this library again in 1.5. If that doesn't work, I don't really care if Apple can recover the photos or not -- I cannot use a data management app that loses data, and further, I won't burn my time/revenue again spending hours testing an app I paid for to work. I'll be returning AP 2.

IPad 2, restore & setup as new, then restore from backup?
Confused yet? I am!
So here we go, yes, I'm new to the forum, I've had my iPad 2 since Oct. 2011. And No, this problem isn't in my head.
Last week, I finally updated to iOS 5.1.1, and I deeply regret doing so. I had NO issue before the update, and now, my battery is garbage.
I used to be able to go 2 - 3 days before having to charge and that's with an average of 4 hours a day. Now, after just a few hours (5) I have to charge and it takes forever. I've been working with Apple, but they having given me an option I'm happy with.
1) Mail my unit back to them to switch out with a refurb. I am against this option as I like my unit. I didn't originally buy a refurb and I should have to accept one now. The screen on my unit is perfect, no bleed or dead pixels. I've taken immaculate care of mine and I'm afraid I'll get a unit I'm not happy with. Plus, it will be running iOS 6, which I'm not ready for.
Option two is...and this needs to be done whether I return my unit or not, is a restore and setup as new. Which means I would loose all my information buried deep within my apps. This would also install iOS 6 on my unit.
My question is this...
If I do a Restore, Setup as new, can I then go back in and do a restore from back up, to put all my stuff back in its place.
I'd love to hear from anyone that has any insight, suggestions, experience, or comments about this.
How did you handle it?
What was the outcome?
Did you involve Apple in the resolution?
Or,
Is it just not worth dealing with and I should just keep using it until it won't take a charge.
I know there have been a million posts about this, and I've read a lot of them, but I just haven't found a solution yet.
And before anyone states the obvious, ALL locations are off, all email accounts are set to manual, there are no notifications set.
In the past week, I've done 3 reset all settings, drained battery until system shut down, and did an uninterrupted full charge.
I've reset network settings. I make sure apps are closed by double tapping Home button, and done a hard reset by holding power button and home button until apple icon appears. I'm at a loss, and don't know what else to do.First, make sure you are using the most current version of iTunes 11.1.3 (8). Second, what version of iOS 7 was your old phone running, i.e. 7.0, 7.0.1, 7.0.2? If your back-up was made with a version of iOS that is newer than the version on your new phone, it will not sync. For example, if your back-up was of a phone running iOS 7.0.4, and your new phone was running 7.0.2 out of the box, the back up will not sync to the new phone until it is updated to iOS 7.0.4.

Restore from Time Capsule after Hard Drive Crash
The HD on my iMac crashed Christmas Day. I have been running backups on Time Machine to a Time Capsule since I purchased the iMac (and also backing up a MacBook Air), but never had any occasion to see if it worked.
I yesterday got the computer back with a new HD installed. When I tried to do the restore from Time Capsule from the Setup Assistant which ran on start up, I could not get past the initial screen. It kept hanging up on "Opening Time Capsule," and then on one occasion it found only the MacBook Air back up volume.
After some research here, I tried running the utility after booting from my Snow Leopard disk. This time, it immediately found the backups from both computers, but hung up on opening the iMac backup.
After more research, I ran the disk utility and repaired the HD on the iMac. It finally worked -- I woke up to a "Restore Complete" message (it started around 10:00 pm last night). The iMac started up without a hitch to the way it looked Christmas morning. The only problem I have noticed is that my most recent events in iPhoto are empty. The thumbnails are there, but no pictures. I tried to rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager, but no luck. Any ideas?
The other thing I noticed is that I had to reauthorize the computer for my iTunes purchases. Will Apple fix that so it doesn't chew up my last remaining authorization?think about the speed of wifi here
speed at 802.11n = a theoretical 540Mbps (less in real world scenarios)
Mbps = Mega bits per second
MBps - Mega bytes per second
8 bits = 1 byte
8 mega bits = 1 mega byte
How long would it take you to download a 1 gig file from the internet wired into your modem? About 10-20 min? And that is taking into account that the info is being uploaded hardwire. Now imagine that same file over wireless in your home being upload by the Airport card in your computer. People over look upload speed when considering these things. The wireless upload speed of your Airport card is what is limiting this. Just a limitation of the technology, not a fault of Apple just stating the numbers here. -
Can SL restore from a Lion Time Machine backup?
I want to downgrade from Lion to SL. If I do a fresh install of SL will it be able to read my Lion Time Machine backup to restore my applications and data?
To clarify any perceived inconsistency between my advice and that of sig's, my presumption was that you were going to do a complete restore from Time Machine. If that's not the case, sig's advice is important.

Can not restore from a backup in Time Capture
I reinstalled my computer because some reason. The automatic time machine was always run on this Mac, and I am sure it did a backup just ten minuets before I started to install. However, I found that I am not able to restore from backup. I can see the computer name but there is a short phase "No Volumes found in this Backup".
I also tried to open the backup file by Finder from anther Mac, but I failed with a notice "Some resource not available".
How could I do to save my data and files???Can only offer you Section C here > Troubleshooting

Can not restore from all Time Machine backup locations
I've just set up Time Machine in Mountain Lion to rotate backups between a Time Capsule (existing) and a Synology NAS (new).
When I select "Enter Time Machine" only the backups created on the NAS are shown.
How can I make Time Machine show restore points from both devices, or at least select a Time Machine location to restore from?
Backups are rotating and operating between the two without any issues.Pickled Hamster wrote:

You have to use the Browse Other Backup Disks option, per Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #17. -
Unable to restore from my icloud backup
I backed up my 3gs via iCloud and purchased a new 4s. I was expecting to be able to restore from my iCloud backup, but when i tried, it said there was no backup information. I did reset the 3gs before attempting to get the restore started on the 4s. Could that have deleted my backup? I don't think it should have, but I'm not sure why else my iCloud backup is gone. It's screwed me pretty bad. I lost a lot of information!
Help!I had the same problem, too (but when switching from 4 to 4S).
Reason: The iPhone 4S had firmware 5.0.1, whereas the older iPhone 4 was updated to 5.1 already. The backups are incompatible and hence not shown!!
Solution: First update the 4S to the same (or newer) software version, then restore from the backup.
The update is possible without using iTunes, just update "OTA" ("over the air") from within the iPhone (General -> Settings -> Software update) -

Nov 15 10:50:27 localhost Viewer[200]: NetworkBrowser failed to launch "/usr/bin/nmblookup" (No such file or directory)You can't restore a backup made by Time Machine in Mountain Lion using 10.6 discs! You need to start up in Mountain Lion's recovery mode. See How do I restore my entire system?
Since you have replaced the hard drive, that means (unfortunately) that the recovery partition is gone. However, I believe that the recovery partition gets backed up on your Time Machine backups, if you're backing up to a directly-connected hard drive. Try starting up while holding option with the Time Machine drive connected. If you see any recovery "drives" show up, boot from that and you're good.
If that doesn't work, since your machine didn't ship with Mountain Lion (which it obviously didn't if you're able to install Snow Leopard on it), it may not be capable of internet recovery. You could always try internet recovery (hold command-option-R at startup), as there was a firmware update for certain machines a while back that added this capability... though that might only give you Lion, I'm not entirely sure how it works.
If all else fails, you'll need to install Snow Leopard, then update to Mountain Lion. (Save a copy of the installer for the future, and make a bootable Mountain Lion disk from it.) That will give you back the recovery partition so you can restore.
