Restore from Rescue and Recovery 4.1 FAILED

The machine is a Thinkpad T43 running XP. Rescue and Recovery 4.1 backing up to a network share.
Last night, while using nCleaner, I accidentally wiped 30% of my C: partition (I have two: C and D). Since I run a full weekly backup to a network share using Rescue and Recovery 4.1 (RR4.1), I used RR4.1 to do a full restore (via the "simple" interface), however it not only didn't work, it made things worse!
It seems that while R&R 4.1 recovered the programs that had gotten wiped out on the C partition, it deleted almost everything in the C:\Documents and Settings folder (profile information, settings, Thunderbird mail, etc). It also cleaned out my entire D partition!
R&R 4.1 seems to be gone now, BTW (or it's hidden somewhere and I can't find it).
I'm thinking of installing version 4.2 + the patch and trying to restore again.  Any idea what I can try at this point?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Bob,
which version of client security do you have?
From Lenovo site: "Rescue and Recovery 4.1 is only compatible with Client Security Solution 8.0 or later."
or
have you tried uninstalling 4.0 and then 4.1 new?
Regards
Andy

  • Cant restore from rescue and recovery discs

    Hi Guys
I bought a set of Windows 7 64bit Lenovo Rescue and Recovery Discs approx. 18 months ago so I could "restore" my X201 if and when the hard disk died, well the day has come and the discs dont work !!!
I have attempted to "restore" to the new hard disk 3 times and this is now starting to become a joke.
I boot the 1st disk, then I'm asked to insert the 2nd and then 3rd disks, I dont have a 4th disk but the process asks me for one. I believe that this is all working as it takes a number of hours and the drive lights is flickering except when I'm being asked to insert the next disc.
After the final re-boot. following the "Setting up drivers - 100%" on the screen I get a message box that says "Setup cant configure windows for your configuration", this is after I have had the "Starting Windows 7" booting on the screen.
    Has anyone had any experience with Win 7 64bit R & R discs for a X201 ???
    TIA
    NG

I assume your issue is laptop boot mode related.
In order to restore from Lenovo Recovery discs set laptop should be in legacy boot mode. Check out this option in BIOS setup. Unfortunately you'll can't change boot mode later. But this mode just speeds up a boot process only 2-3 secs.
Boot and installation processes don't inform the customer about error boot mode related.
Check out the 1st disc. If it consists a folder like BOOT and files like BOOTMGR and WINRE.WIM (all of them are for boot process) and folder like FACTORYRECOVERY - it's OK and your 1st data disk is bootable too.
If you had partition like Lenovo_Recovery (Q: usually) on your x201 with factory images you could make Factory_Recovery Discs set yourself w/o purchasing it from Lenovo.

  • Service Partition - Rescue and Recovery installation fails (not enough free space)

Im am aware about  former posts to this subject  on this forum, but they didn't answer all my questions, so I reopened  the subject.
I tried to install "Rescue and Recovery" on T60 with win XP  Pro and got the following message:
'There is not enough free space in the boot sector to install the Rescue and Recovery boot manager'
I followed the   solution in "Rescue and Recovery installation fails") from 08-09-2008 03:03 AM
and  created a hidden partition with Parted Magic but the rescue and recovery still fails with the same message.
Somewhere in the forum I read that the original service partition has a special format and not ntfs.
Could somebody tell me is it true or not ?
How can I rebuild this service partition ?
Do I need special setting, flags there ?
Is it possible  to rebuild this partition without recovery CDs at all ?
Actually I'm wondering to,  about the error message. It is saying '"..There is not enough free space in the boot sector ..." .
Is it possible  that the boot sector is the problem and not the service partition ?
How can I fix that ?
Thanks in advance if somebody helps.

I have a 4-year-old ThinkPad R51. Because I was getting intermittent boot-up error messages--"Rescue and Recovery has encountered a problem and needs to close"--with ver. 4.0, I tried to upgrade to ver. 4.2.  Per instructions, I first removed ver. 4.0 using Windows Control Panel.  Then each attempt to install 4.2 failed with the message: "Error 25025. There is not enough free space on the computer to install or upgrade the Rescue and Recovery environment."  Just before that error message popped up in center-screen, I got a Windows message at lower right saying "You are running out of space on SERVICEV001 (Z:}"  Of course, there was no way I could view partition Z (that I knew of).
Thanks to the helpful messages above, I downloaded Parted Magic (http://partedmagic.com), burned a boot CD per its instructions, and re-booted with that CD.  Using GParted, I saw that my SERVICEV001 partition was merely 590 MB, and 587 MB was in use.  So I reduced my C partition by 500 MB and added 500 MB to the Z partition, raising it to 1090 MB.  Then I was able to re-boot into Windows and the installation of Rescue and Recovery 4.2 was error-free.
Out of curiosity, I again re-booted with the Parted Magic CD to see how much space on the Z partition was taken by the RnR ver. 4.2 installation.  To my surprise, it showed that still only 587 MB was in use, and 503 MB remained unused.
I thank those in this forum whose messages gave me the needed guidance.  And I thanked the author of Parted Magic with a $10 donation, as I hope other users of his open source program will do.

  • Restore X201 from Rescue and Recovery file says it will take 6 days complete

    Hi,
I had a malware issue that messed up my firewall (McAfee) and so I decided to restore from a RnR file.  The file is located on my home network drive so I connnected via ethernet cable and initiated the full restore of the file.  I'm running an X201 with Win7 64bit.
I started the restore last night before I went to bed.  This morning I checked on it and it was had the progress bar showing and the estimated time remaining.  It said it was restoring partition "1 of 2", approx 5% complete, with approx 8800 minutes remaining.  12 hours later, it has approx 8200 minutes remaining.  Yep, about 6 days.
I've done a restore before but only back to factory settings.  This 6 day restore can't be normal.
What does the RnR file contain?  Does it only take an image of the user partition of the drive or does it also take an image of the system partition (Q?  What if I forced the laptop to power down and restarted the restore process?  Will I nuke the system?  Or can I recover from that with my RnR file?
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Additional comments.  If have home computer 1 and computer 2, does backup to Network imply you have a /RRbackups folder on computer 1, which is a backup of computer 2?
If computer 1 has RNR installed, maybe you can copy backups to another medium(cd/dvd). /RRbackups would have to reside on the local(C) drive of computer 1. Then you can REFESH computer 2 from the backup medium, avoiding ethernet issues.
If backup of computer 2 is on computer 1, you can reach in and restore single files which you might Love.  Glad you
had your DATA backed up via other means!!
You mentioned restore of 1 of 2 paritions.  Lots of debate lately about the System Reserve partition used by bitlocker.
Do you have a windows 7 which supports bitlocker? (ie, windows ultimate, professional).
After you get your Factory reset calmed down, could you post a  diskmanagement screen of your partitions? I did a clean install of windows 7, so only have 1 partition.  If you bought a Lenovo with win7, you got win 7, win re and RNR factory reset partition. If RNR takes a base backup C drive, maybe Factory partition, maybe a bitlocker partition are backed up.
Depending on which options your choose for RNR standalone restore (6 days), you choose base, 3 weeks ago incremental, etc.
If you interrupt the restore of any of the above C drive is trash(brick). You made the correct decision to do factory reset.
If you love your base backup, you can tell RNR  standalone to start there.  IF you astro exit out of a incremental backup restore, wax. Go back to base.  So you astro out of the incremental restore!. Simple, do the base restore, then come back and do the incremental restore.

  • Can't exit from Rescue and Recovery 4

I have been having problems with my Z61t laptop so I thought I would use the R&R recovery disks that I created.  I was able to start the process with the recovery disk but when I went to do a recovery, a box on the screen asks that I insert the disk labeled "Final Disk."  I don't have such a disk and was never instructed to label a disk with that label.  I tried inserting the final disk in the series that I made, which is labeled disk 5, but that doesn't work.
I would like to exit the R&R program, but there is no way to quit.  When I reboot, it automatically goes into R&R and there is no apparent way for me to escape it.  I even tried booting from a bootable CD to reinstall Win XP (SP3), but the setup program informs me that it can't see a hard drive.  Apparently R&R still has control of the computer and is blocking access to the hard drive.
How do I get R&R to terminate?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
to me this looks like an issue of a missing SATA driver.
In this case I would advice to go into the BIOS and change the SATA mode from AHCI to Compatibility. Once this is done you can use also the Recovery Disks and the restor will work.
Let me know, if this worked out.
    Cheers

  • Rescue and Recovery 4.21 failing to do initial back-up of HD

I have a Z60M that's running XP Pro. I recently had to reload everything including all new drivers from Lenovo site. I have an external HD that had an image of the Laptop HD that was created from RnR v4.0. Because of some issues with the registry on the laptop and backed-up image, I decided to blow-up the Z60m and reload everything. I restored individual files I needed for programs such as outlook & firefox from the back-up. Now, when I attempt to back-up my "shiny-new machine", the RnR runs for between 1 to 4 minutes then returns message "back-up not successful." I still have the old base backup and 2 incrementals on the external HD. Am I missing something or is the software just bad? Thanks!
Additionally, not sure if this is related, but Lenovo System Tools (PC Doctor) has following message in backup location field:
    "Missing string: scriplets.p5p: ThinkVantageRescusRecovery.BackupLocation.usbhdd"
    Thanks again

  • Rescue and Recovery Issues!

    Hello All,
I purchased a T60p about a year and a half ago along with the 3yr. extended warranty.  I have been trying to recover a saved backup on my hard disk since I have had some problems with Windows but have run into a serious problem.  I have tried to restore from rescue and recovery but keep getting a password entry dialog box.  I didn't set one up since I've owned the computer and this is confirmed by the dialog box that states for me to set one up and try again.  I even tryed to use the "forgot password" option and it still sends me around in circles for a password entry.  I have contacted customer service several times and got a set of rescue and recovery discs to set it up to factory state but the password thing still comes up on bootup even from the CD.  The last suggestion from customer service was to purchase a SATA drive-to-USB cable to back up the data to another computer.  But other than seeing the contents of the drive directories I cannot back it up (probably a protected partition).  I am at a loss here and was wondering if anyone could help.
The files on this hard drive are vital for me to recover as they contain lots of personal pictures of family (some now gone), CAD work, as well as other irreplaceable info.
Can anyone suggest a course of action?  Is there a service that can retrieve the data?  I have no problem reloading the applications I just need the data files.
    Couple of questions:
Why can't I reinstall Windows from the discs sent to me from Lenovo (only the R&R disc is bootable)?
Can I reinstall Windows on the drive without loosing the data on the R & R partition?
    Please Help!

    Hi Nemo,
My questions may be totally irrelevant, but I'm going to ask them anyway. Just in case.
Some versions of R&R, when launched, would ask if you want to set a password or protect the backups with your windows password. As you don't mention having tried your windows log-in password, if you have / had one, have you tried using it or, if set up, the default admin account password?
Also what about the good old enter key i.e. no password, or trying "admin"?

I am currently analzying logs from "rescue and recovery" and "swshare" program and notice SMA.log and capture.sma in particular. I want to verifiy what do each of those 2 logs mean. does one mean the data that was successfully backed up and the other one means what was restored to the machine? the restore.log contains a specific date, was that the date the data was restored to the machine?
    Thanks in advance!!!

The logs gets created automatically and have the information of the particular task which is completed or processed.

  • Rescue and Recovery -- USB external hard drive

Can anyone recommend the best external hard drive to use for Thinkvantage Rescue and Recovery?  I've been doing some research and I'm concerned about the Maxtor "one touch" software.  If I choose to purchase a Maxtor external hard drive should I go in and delete any software on the drive before I back up from Rescue and Recovery? I have been having a lot of problems with Rescue and Recovery -- it's difficult to delete past backups, and I get hangups.  But eventually it usually backs up.  I have read reviews for the Maxtor one touch software and it sounds like it doesn't work well for restoring an entire system (problems with certain files, such as hidden files, etc.).  But maybe that's not true?  Also, do you recommend that I delete all previous backups before running a Rescue and Recovery backup?  If not, if I ever had to restore from it, would it automatically use the most current backup?
Thanks in advance for any advice!  I'm a novice, but I want to make sure that everything is backed up properly.

    Herik,
I'm not sure  I'm looking in the right place - the folders you specified don't exist, or they aren't where you indicated. I can only get to "Rescue and Recovery" in the HK - Local Machine registry folder - nothing further there. Here's what I have:

  • Rescue and Recovery "restore to factory settings" fails

I have had need to recover my T61 to the state of original receipt. I boot from the recovery startup disc and select that I wish to recover to factory settings, and that I wish to save no files. After a progress bar fills, I am prompted to insert Product Recovery Disc 1. After it has completed, I am prompted for Disc 2, then Disc 3, etc., until the Disc 8. After the last disc progress bar is filled, I am presented with the message "Product Recovery failed to restore your system." The T61 then boots to the Rescue and Recovery menu. I have attempted this once again and have the same result. Please help if you can!

Trying to do a restore to factory settings, ive tried holding down '0' on bootup but i get nothing it just goes starts up.
I want to totally reset to factory settings, but unable to do it?
You said that Win 8 system run on this notebook.
As far as I know this notebook Satellite L750D-14R was preinstalled with Win 7 64bit OS.
This means that HDD recovery procedure will not work because the HDD content and the partitions has been modified!
To recover the notebook back to factory settings you would need the Toshiba Recovery disk/medium. If you did not create such disk then you could order this here:
    http://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/
Anyway, I guess that the LAN connection doesn’t work due to LAN driver issue.
I recommend you to uninstall the LAN driver (in device manager) and to download the latest available LAN driver from Toshiba EU driver page.
After LAN driver installation reboot the notebook.

  • Rescue and Recovery, restoring files from a vista system to a new Windows 7 system.

I had been using rescue and recovery to back up the system on my Thinkpad X300, up until a few months ago.  The OS was vista, and I have since upgraded to Windows 7.  Yesterday, my laptop was stolen, and have lost a good amount of important data.  Before I go shelling out $$$ for a new thinkpad, My question is, will I be able to use Rescue and Recovery on a  Windows 7 system for files that were backed up on a system running vista?

    mottowa2, welcome to the forum,
sorry to hear your ThinkPad was stolen, not a nice thing to happen
I think the important factor is how / where you have saved your R&R backups. I'm guessing you copied them to other media?
    On the download site for R&R v.4.3, which is only compatible with W7, it states;
If you want to retain the ability to restore from backups created with a previous version of Rescue and Recovery, you must create a copy of your backup files on bootable, external recovery media before installing the latest version.
To archive your backups, complete the following procedure:
From the Rescue and Recovery main screen, click Backup, and then select Copy backups from hard drive from the drop-down list.
Select the medium you want to save your backup files to by clicking the appropriate radio button. The backup files that will be copied are listed on the user interface.
    Click OK to continue
    2. You will need blank removable media when copying backups from the hard drive to CD or DVD. Make sure that you label each disc as it is created, and that you store them together in a safe place.
Note: You will be prompted to make the external media bootable at the beginning of the process.
I believe, and sincerely hope, that all may not be lost.

  • T43: Recovery Discs are corrupt and Rescue and Recovery won't restore from the Hard Drive?

I recently created Recovery Discs in Windows XP, but when I insert Disc 2, it always says that it is the incorrect disc so I cannot continue the factory restore.
Now I'm trying to restore by booting into the Rescue and Recovery on my hard drive, but it cannot find the hidden factory partition on the hd. It also now says that the restore had a "convertion" error when it wouldn't recognize disc 2 and will not let me try to look at my hard drive to restore anymore. If I use the RR boot disc, it will let me try to restore, but it finds nothing restorable on the HD.
I did look at the hard drive and see 2 partitions with one being a IBM_SERVICE partition with 3.9GB total size and 2.9GB free space.
    Please help, thanks.

    Hi,
maybe somebody here could help me. i've totly lost the original partition of IBM on my T41 thinkpad. If somebody could advise me how do i get it back, i would appreciate it very much.
    Thanks,

  • Rescue and Recovery failed destination network location can no longer be reached

W510, running Windows 7 Pro SP1,  updated with ThinkVantage including BIOS 1.37 along with Rescue and Recovery 4.31 yesterday. Using Backup locations "Local hard drive" had not problem, but when it was set to "Network", it gave me "The backup failed because the destination network location can no longer be reached.". Prior to running RR, I manually mounted the shared drive on W510 and could read and write files. The user that mounted the shared drive was not "Administrator" but has Administrator privilege. The network shared drive was a folder on an Windows XP SP3 computer. The shared drive had Full Control granted to Everyone as well as for Sharing. I rebooted W510 before starting RR. After the "network location can no longer be reached" error popped up, a long while later, RR actually wrote some files in the shared drive and then finally it aborted. It created on the shared drive RRBackups\SZ\<UUID>\... (among other folders and files); under <UUID> there's a common\rr.log with:

    The events don't make sense:
    a) Why would RR says "network location can no longer be reached" - the wording suggests that it was OK, but now it isn't.
    b) The br_funcs returns Error 0x501 (NOT_IMPLEMENTED or NOT_SUPPORTED), but RR still attempted to call mapdrv.
    c) Apparently mapdrv was successful otherwise it shouldn't try to delete the t0.dat on the shared drive (which didn't exist - hence Error 3 (PATH_NOT_FOUND)) and unless it has reached the remote computer, it wouldn't know the file wasn't there.
I'm curious to find out if anyone has run into this problem and how to fix it.

It errored out after it has already created some folders and files as indicated in the first post.Tried the same steps several times just make sure it was repeatable by closing Rescue and Restore app and starting it again. The network between the share host and my W510 was a direct RJ45 cable connection, so zero hop.  In the end I used Windows 7 Backup and Restore to do full backup, using the same \\server\sharename, the network share was mapped without a problem. But then Windows 7 Restore CD wasn't able to map network share - giving me 0x800704cf. Googling shows lots questions raised on this but no fix.
    Update:
Last night, I gave it a shot again. For some reason, RR was able to mapped the network share using \\IPaddress\sharename (this time I used a different folder and a diferent sharename). OK great, but after 10 hrs it's at 88% completion, did my math, estimated elasped time is 12 hrs, Wow! The image backup with Windows 7 Backup took 5 hr 51 min with 132GB in the WindowsImageBackup folder. RR is 2x slower!
On the other hand, as it's still running, the est. backup folder size is 106GB. RR does a better job in compression - a 20% reduction in size compared with Windows' at the cost of 2x time.
Going back to the Windows 7 Restore CD 0x80704cf error when mapping the network share, found an Internet user posting that he succeede by providing a NIC driver.

  • Rescue and Recovery 4.2 Does not Launch from Start Programs Thinkvantage

I have a T61 with XP SP3.  I recently installed and uninstalled the version of Ubutuno that can be booted from Windows.  I played with it for a few days then uninstalled it.   Then I unistalled Rescue and Recovery using Add Remove programs...I am thinking of getting a SSD and I wanted to remove large programs before I image the disk.
I changed my mind and tried to reinstall Rescue and Recovery.  I got the error saying that my boot space was too small.  I used the Lenevo mbr repair feature that I found on this board.
I was then able to install R&R 4.21,  and I was able to create recovey disks using the create recovery disks program
However, when I try to launch  Rescue and Recovery,  (Start, Programs, Thinkvantage, Rescue and Recovery). the disk spins and I get the hour glass on the cursor...and the hour glass goes away after about 7 seconds...the disk continues too blink off and on, but the program will not launch.  The rrservice.exe and rrpservice exe services are running.  I tried disabling Kapernsky virus, and that did not help.  I have rebooted several times.
Any suggestions!  I will buy you a beer for sure!!
    Thanks
    Jeff

My other post just  gave you the basics.  I got tired to typing the same info over and over.
    Two issues lately.
    (1) I am going from vista to win7, and I have a Factory shipped Lenovo. RNR wont install.
    (2) I have win7 on a factory ship, and I want to go from Hdd to SDD.  USB recovery wont boot.
    ==
I take my backups to a 2nd HDD.  Also, every few months, I backup to a DVD set, HDD's may last 3 years, maybe 4. You dont want your loved backup on the C drive, and HDD fails. On top of that, if you back up to the C drive, the HDD grinds away. Read C, write to C\rrbackups.  Backup will run faster to 2nd HDD or USB.
    ===
You state a pristine Vista.  I am guessing it was a Factory shipped Lenovo with Vista.
The TIP in the other post is if you know of this issue BEFORE windows 7 install.
At the time during Win 7 install, and it is deciding where to put itself, there is a Default Recommended and I think a drop down list of other options.  This is tricky.  Example, (a). park me in the current C partition. (b) park me on the whole HDD.
Did you upgrade the Vista, inplace to win7 or did you clean install win7 to a blank C partition.
Lets see if you have a recovery(vista) partition.
Go to control panel>admin tools>computer management>disk management. Check to see if other partitions show up other than the C drive. Recovery partition should be around 10 GB. Sometimes this partition is labeled IBM_Preload or similar.
    Solution/workaround
I dont have 1 that i have tested.  Maybe other users can offer suggestions.
(1)You could delete the Q, but this might not clean up the MBR/BCD(boot control) entries.
    (2) Backup your loved win7, erase HDD, then restore.  MAYBE a win7 backup allows ignoring the Q partition.  I am not an expert with using win7 backup, and I dont have a q drive.
*** all this is time consuming**, risky, and may not   solve the issue.

  • Recovering backup data from a previous version of Rescue and Recovery

    Dear All,
can you please advice how can I restore the system&data (Windows 7)
I created recovery CDs and did the full backup (USB drive)
I changed disk (diagnostic reported warnings for the old one)
    I recovered system from CD
I wanted to recover full backup/image from USB drive, however
after reboot R&R 4 starts and error message "... backup taken with previous version..." is displayed.
I wanted to recover single file (R&R 4.31)  from USB drive, however
error message "The list box identifierwas not found"  is displayed
What shall I do? upgrade R&R to 4.51? downgrade R&R to 4 (where are downloads)? something else? what R&R versions exist for W7?
    thanks in advance.

Thank you for coming back to my issue.
