Restore from Time machine has not restored services

Hi all,
We recently did a Time Machine restore on one of our OS X servers. After the restore, none of the services such as Open Directory are running. As a result I couldn't log in with the normal Administrator account, and had to use the DVD to reset the root password. This is very frustrating since my machine is now basically useless. Does anyone know how to get these services running again, and why did Time Machine not restore the correct service configuration on to the server?
Thanks,
Todd

Hi.
TM is probably hardwired to do you the favor of not attempting to backup your OD databases.
Please know that you cannot reliably backup a running database externally (barring other special cases, for example other OSes, different filesystems & specialized backup software). In some cases
it might "appear" to work but the result will likely be in an inconsistent state and should not be trusted.
You should do scripted backups (google for : automating Open Directory Backup)
and see in particular, www.afp548.com/filemgmt/visit.php?lid=68
Backup your OD appropriately to a location that is accessible to TM and then use it to backup your OD export/backup.

  • Full restore from Time Machine has not restored my photos

I was getting a triangle with an exclamation mark in it when I tried to click on my photos in iPhoto (photos uploaded from my camera only - iPhone pics are still there).  A backup from Time Machine didn't work, so I did a full restore from Time Machine to a date when I knew all was well with my photos but I still get the triangle/!. Where are my photos?

The ! means that iPhoto has lost the link to the original file.
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

Restore from time machine does not list all my backups.  I know they exist but their dates are not present on the restore list.  Any help appreciated.  If I must use one of these older dates to restore, how do I then get the more current data off time machine?

Ok, so am i correct in saying that the steps to fix are as follows.
That's one option, but not what I meant by restoring in the time-travel view. The latter is what you get when you enter Time Machine.
is the fresh install not going to be able to "see" the time machine backups that I have at the moment.
It should, but sometimes people report that it fails. I'm not sure why that happens.

    Hi bodegakc,
If you have the serial number then please use the below mentioned link to download the product you are looking for .
    CS5.5
Also before installing Please go to Applications-->Utilities--> Adobe installers and if there is any uninstaller for CS5.5 , you can remove it and do a fresh install.
You can also use creative cloud cleaner tool before installing.
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6

  • Restore from time machine error 'not enough space'

I'm trying to restore my HD from Time Machine and in the Select A Destination' window the HD is listed but I cannot select it.  At the bottom there is an error message of "This disk does not have enough space to restore your system".   Let me say the backup came from this same computer.  I thinking I may have to reformat the HD and then restore.   Any helpful advice?

  • Emails in restored mailbox from Time Machine are not visible

I have an IMAC 5.1 with OSX 10.6.8. When I restored a mailbox using Time Machine, the mailbox appears in Apple Mail however no emails are visible even though they are present in the folder in library/mail/mailboxes in Finder. Any suggestions on how I can make the emails visible?
    Thanks

I managed to find the solution.  In Mail under Mailbox in the header there is a Rebuild button.  I pressed it and my emails are now visible.

  • Time Machine has not worked since upgrade to Lion

    Hello,
I've noticed that my Mac Mini's Time Machine will no longer perform a backup - I keep receiving a "could not create the backup folder" error message. This problem only started after I upgraded my Mac Mini (2010 Model) to Lion, Time Machine had worked perfectly when I use to use Snow Leopard. I have both formatted and partitioned my Time Machine drives (the first drive was a Seagate Barracuda 7,200 RPM 1TB drive, the 2nd drive is a 2TB Porsche Drive I bought at my local Apple Store). Both drives, when I was partitioning them, were set to use the GUID Partition Scheme. The Seagate Drive is an Internal Hard Drive that is sitting in a ThermalTake 2-Bay Drive Dock which is connected by a USB Cord, the Porsche drive is an External Drive that is connected via a USB cord. I have also tried unmounting/remounting each drive, deleting the Time Machine "plist" file from my Library folder and restarting, and finally re-installing Lion from the recovery drive I made using the instructions on support.apple.com. Unfortunately, nothing I've done so far has solved the issue.
I checked my Console log for Time Machine and this is what I found:

Being a relatively new Mac User (I only knew about the above "fixes" after doing several Google Searches) I have no idea what the Console Log is trying to tell me or how to fix whatever is being referred to. I will be very grateful for any assistance that can be offerred.

I installed, and ran, the Time Machine Buddy Widgit and it displayed this message:
    Starting standard backup
    Backing up to: /Volumes/Backup/Backups.backupdb
    Error: (22) setxattr for key:com.apple.backupd.HostUUID path:/Volumes/Backup/Backups.backupdb/Abraham size:37

  • Why do I get messages telling me that Time Machine has not backed up?

I have a Macbook Pro with Yosemite 10.10.1.   Time Machine sends me messages that my computer has not been backed up in hundreds of days.  I just attached the hard drive two days ago and the light was on.  All instructions say Time Machine works when you plug in your hard drive.  How can I tell if it actually backed up my computer?

    Hello!
Open: "Apple menu > System Preferences > Time Machine" It will state there why a back-up has failed.

  • Snow Leopard & Leopard partitions from old Macbook 2007 (restored from Time machine) do not boot on new 13" MacBook Pro 2012

Bought a new 13 " MB pro 2.5 core i5 (2012) (not the retina) because old faithful Blackbook 2007 (Lion was its limit) fell off a table onto  a hard floor. new MBP Came with 10.8.2 but I made 4 partitions to match what was on old blackbook.
One of the partitions with 10.6 on it was used to run my old Canon FB630U scanner so Snow Leopard was as far as I could go.
Canon would have been nice had they made updates that didn't require or need  Rossetta or made the jump to lion. They have versions that work in Windows 7.
After the restore, I could not boot up  10.6 on my new Macbook Pro. Got the famous  kernel panic (please restart). Using the SL install disk would not work even if I tried to boot from the CD and the install button showed the famous (Will not Work) sign when I booted up in ML in ML  and inserted the MAC os SL dvd.
Other partition that I restored was Leopard. When I tried to boot it on the MBP, I did not get a kernel panic just a bright screen with no apple showing that something is happening.  Had 2 choices meaning 2 partitions  to run the scanner on the old  blackbook, L and SL. Again the installers did not work when I tried both ways to install on that old Leopard partition.
Is there a work around that would permit me to run in either SL or Leopard on my new MBP? If this does not exist, then I'll have a giant Canon scanner paper weight.
    Thanks
    Ted

Guess this solves the issue. Boo Hiss. Thanks
Hard to think of Leopard being associated with the Wright Brothers and Mountain Lion as a F35 but you're really referring to the hardware changes not the software.
Doubt that the roaring apps has the answer. One reason to boycott Canon products for not updating drivers of a perfectly good scanner meant to run in a Mac non intel world. Ironically intel is OK in the WONDOZE world.
    Thanks
    Ted

  • Mail recovery from time machine/capsule

I need/want to restore a deleted Inbox (2 hours ago).  I am assuming that I can do this from my Time Machine, is this a correct assumption?
If I can back up my deleted Inbox I cannot find it on my Time Machine anywhere.  Is there a trick to how to do this or do I need to full restore from a backup taken earlier in the day?
Appreciate any pointers at this stage.

Thanks for directing me to the link.  Very helpful.  Only one problem.  It appears for some reason that Time Machine has not backed up any of the mail files since I bought it over 12 months ago.  I thought that unless you specifically exclude items then things are backed up.  How do I check if my photos and music are also not being backed up?

  • Cannot copy files from Time Machine

    Hi,
I wanted to trash all my Time Machine Files yesterday but when I tried to empty the trash, my Mac started to count all the files on the trash for so long that I decided to undo that. So, I opened the trash and decided to move back again all my Time Machine back up files into the original disk where they where. My Mac started to count all the files and it did not stopped since then? What can I do to resolve this issue, since my Mac has been counting files since very late last night and it's been doing this ever since: it's been counting for at least one day?
Can I stop the process and do something else, I would not like to damage my disk or something else. I know I should have taken a «reformat» option instead but right now I do not know if I can stop this process or should I let it run for I do not know how long???
    Please help!
    Thanks
    Robert

    Hi,
After consideration of all this precious time spent, I've decided finally to call at Apple support even if my Apple Care coverage had expired for so many years. The 35$ fee for a month services was largely worth the call and the service I received... So, with the help of a well trained expert, I got the job done very fast et efficiently! Mind you, I had to insist to be in the hand of a good expert before doing anything, this was a "must" in my case...
After explaining my problem to this expert I realized that I was in good hands: he knew what was the problem and he really made my call worth all the money. I agreed to share my screen with him and we started with Terminal.
    First:
I emptied the trash by typing the proper command in Terminal. I tried it before but it wasn't working since all my backup files from Time Machine where not on my local disk, they where on another internal disk. With his help, I identified the proper disk and when Terminal executed the command, it was done in no time. Sweet, no more counting! But my files where still on the trash, no one could tell how long this would take to trash everything. I had a zillion files in my Backup from Time Machine!
    Second:
So, I asked my expert: "since we don't know how long will this process will take, will reformatting the disk, be better and will this save time? Is it possible since all my files on this disk are in the trash? He said: "Yes it will work even if your files are in the trash". Ok, let's do it! So, I've stopped the process after a few minutes and started Disk Utility. I then identified the volume and hit the "erase" button.
Voilà, the job was done perfectly after 2 minutes, my disk was clean.
    Conclusion:
Is it both actions that did the job, I cannot say. But in my case, it worked perfectly. I know, I should have reformat my disk first, it would have save me so much time.
May my mistake serve other users in the futur! If anyone would like the command codes I used in Terminal, feel free to ask.
Live long and prosper Mr. Technician!
    Robert M.

  • HT3275 Time Machine could not complete the backup.  The backup disk image "/Volumes/ELBs Time Ca/ELB's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use.

For the past couple weeks, my Time Machine has not been backing up file from my MacBook Pro.  I've had the Time Capsule for a couple years now.  Entering the Time Machine I discovered that there are no files before "yesterday" yet there are only 161.0 GB of 998.06 GB available.  A "Failed" message apprears with a popup message: "The backup disk image “/Volumes/ELBs Time Ca/ELB’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use."  How can it be in use when Time Machine takes hours looking for the device?
Another error code message also pops up from time to time: Finder error code -6584.  What is that?  And how is it fixed?
All software is up to date on this computer and Time Capsule.

Further to my earlier response (system re-start and firmware update resulted in full Time Machine backup) I waited until the next scheduled backup to determine success.
As it has turned out, the Time Machine's next backup was for 48 kb  and ran for eight hours!  The progress bar was complete (solid blue) and I therefore stopped the backup.  It has been "stopping backup" for the past hour.
What is wrong with this process?

  • Recovering iCal from Time Machine

In syncing my iPhone with my desktop, all calenders and events were wiped out. Trying to recover the data from Time Machine has been unsuccessful. Whenever I download the data from earlier, the calender does not show the missing events. I chose "replace" when it asked, yet still nothing. Any help?

    ssamnelson,
What file(s) did you replace using Time Machine?
Open your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Calendars Folder, and locate the Calendar Cache file. Quit iCal and move the Calendar Cache file to your Desktop.
Additionally, navigate to your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder, and find the com.apple.iCal.plist file. Drag that file to your desktop, log out/in or restart and let us know if iCal finds the missing events/calendars.
    ;~)

  • My Time machine can not backup as the backup disk image " . . . .sparsebundle" is already in use. ??

my time machine is giving me an error message that says "The backup disk image "voumes/data/..........sparse.bundle" is already in use. Time machine has not completed successful backup for over two weeks.

First, restart your Mac and the Time Capsule. In most of the cases, this will solve the problem.
    If it doesn't work, see > http://pondini.org/TM/C12.html
