Restore from TimeMachine - processing all pictures?

I had a complete internal drive failure.  The drive was replaced by Apple (under warranty) and I just did a complete restore from TimeMachine.  I have never had a drive failure and never done a restore from TimeMachine.  Luckily all seems well.  My only question is each time I open an Aperture project it is "processing" the pictures like the original import.  Is this because of the TimeMachine restore?
I also noticed that the Aperture icon is different and I think Apple loaded a newer version of Aperture on my drive.  I think I had an earlier version of 3.x and they loaded 3.2.4.
Bottom line, is there anything I need to do after the TimeMachine restore (related to Aperture).

Well, after about 20 hrs its done "processing" and all is in order.  So I guess when you do a full restore from TimeMachine it acts like a new import.

  • Question about restore from Timemachine

Today, I did a restore from Time Machine of my "Pictures" folder. I was surprised to see that it blessed and renamed the "new" Pictures folder, "Pictures (original)". Is this normally what it does ie rename a folder like this. Moreover, the folder name seems read only, and defies any attempt to rename it just "Pictures". Any insight would be welcome.
Thanks in advance and a happy upcoming New Year to all.

  • Approach for fresh OSX install to new SSD drive with restore from TimeMachine

I have an early 2010 MacBook Pro with running Mavericks with FileVault 2 encryption.  The drive seems to be failing.  I am not able to boot it up.  I get a "Prohibitory" sign with freezing.  I have attempted various recovery steps:  booting with Command-R, running Disk Utility, attempting to do a full restore from TimeMachine, turning off encryption via terminal/command line with no success.  I am not able to mount the disk volume.  DiskWarrior doesn't seem to support bootable Maverick volumes.  I don't the the existing drive deserves additional time.
I've purchased a new SSD drive and I plan to do a fresh OS install on that drive, followed by a restore of my most recentTimeMachine backup to that drive.  My backups are not encrypted.  Because the current HDD seems to be toast and is running FileVault 2, installing from scratch and then restoring apps and data seems to be the most realistic approach.
Can somebody please tell me what the preferred sequence of steps would be to do this?  Particularly the initial OS X install?  Since the new drive will not have a recovery partition, I assume that I cannot do Command-R at boot-time to start the install.  My system has a DVD drive, but I don't have a Mavericks install disk.
    Comments appreciated...

Restart the computer. At the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. There should be a disk icon for your Time Machine backup drive. Select it and click on the arrow button below it. This will start you into a hidden Recovery HD on your Time Machine backup drive. Select the Disk Utility option and click on the Continue button.
    1. After DU loads select your SSD (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    2. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    3. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    5. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    6. Quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu. Select the Install OS X option and click on the Continue button.
    7. Be sure to select your SSD as the installation target.

  • Cannot move photo from catalogue to all pictures in "home" location

I have adobe starter edition 3, windows xp. Computer is Dell 2400 (IBM), printer is PIXMA MP530. I have some pictures on fotki that I want to place in the "home" part of ADOBE, where all of my pictures can be seen. I am able to download to desktop. It seems as if I click on the ADOBE picture album folder, the photo would replace the picture album folder. When I download to the desktop, the photo is placed in the catalogue. When I try to place it in the home location, a "cannot place in location: picture already in catalgoue" message. I cannot see the photo unless I type in the file name and search using "find". I would like to be able to see this photo in the home folder. There are too many photos that need to be downloaded (a computer accident destroyed some photos, but I can download the original photo from fotki).
How can I place the photos in the "home" loaction?

  • Intel Mac Mini crash.  Restore from TimeMachine failed.  Reinstall from DVD failed

I am at a loss.  My Mac Mini (Intel 2.53ghz, 10.6.7, 4gb RAM) froze today.  Mouse would still move the cursor, but nothing responded.  After letting it go for perhaps a half hour, waiting for a chance to get control back or to perhaps relaunch Finder, I gave up and turned it off by holding down the power button.  On reboot, it would not make it past the startup screen.  I inserted the restore DVD that came with this Mac Mini, it booted from the DVD and I tried reinstalling OSX 10.6 from the DVD.  It proceeded to around 30% install and crashed.  I turned it off again, started up again form the DVD, and went into Disk Utility.  I verified the internal HD and it had no errors and nothing to repair.  This time I went directly to a restore from my TimeMachine backup.  (I had actually installed one new program today, and in case that program was the issue I chose a restore from the morning a few hours before that new program was added.)  The restore progressed to 86.6%, then crashed.  I saved the installer log to an external drive.
I took a few hours away from it, but came back after a few hours.  I attempted to boot from the DVD again, and it would not get beyond the Apple sreen.  I turned it off by holding down the power button, unplugged the power supply, and searched online for around 30 minutes.  After finding little online, I booted from the DVD again, this time succesfully, and am currently running a TimeMachine restore again which I started after I began typing this entry because, honestly, when I started typing this I didn't think it would boot from the DVD again.  At the moment, the resotre is at 12.7%, but considering it crashed at 86.6% last time, I'm not too hopeful.
Any thoughts or advice?  I'm not totally freaked out as I keep all documents on two external drives and backed up, in addition to having a 2tb TimeMachine drive with this system, all connected by fw800.  But... it's not like I don't want to get this Mac Mini working again.  It's from November 2009 an I don't have Apple Care for it, which I suppose means they'll charge me a fortune if I take it in.   (I'm grateful to have this 11.6" MacBook Air to work on.)
Until Disk Utility told me that the internal drive was okay, I was thining I should try sticking a new hd inside and reinstalling from there.  Not sure what to do if this TimeMachine restore fails.  (at 18.5% now.)
My thanks to any who read this.

Thanks for responding.  I forgot to come here and delete this thread.  As it turned out, I switched from trying to use the OSX Install disc that came with the Mac Mini and instead used a Snow Leopard retail dvd.  That disc worked perfectly.  Pretty disturbing that the dvd that came with the computer would not work, while a store bought one worked.  Glad I bought a retail version of OSX to hackintosh a dell mini or I wouldn't havebeen able to fix this.

  • Want to restore from Lion back to snow leopard using my Drobo-Fs.  Lion is my current OS but due to lack of support for powerpc applications I want to go back.  Has anyone done a complete restore from TimeMachine on a Drobo-Fs?

I tried to do this as follows, 1).  Using the install DVD for snow leapard I booted up the mac, 2).  Went into terminal and mounted the Drobo-Fs.  3).  Followed the usual Restore from steps.....
It took around 8 hours just to come to the point of actually starting the restored....and then calculated like +1000000 hours to complete the restore.  So I cancelled it.
Not sure, I mean the drobo-fs backs up data, but can it actually restore(full restore) via TimeMachine is my question.

I'm about to throw my Drobo FS out the window.  It's performance is so erratic.  Right now the green access light is on continuously, yet there's no IO from my mac.  Since upgrading to LION (and finally upgrading the drobo software), I can't log on to the drobo any more. The drobo app says the unit is healthy.
I know that the drobo does internal work from time to time, but there's no way to find out what it's doing. No user feedback at all.  Thank goodness I only use it for regular backups and not time machine. Time to move on.

    Hi there,
I made a mistake and all of my archived mails are "gone". I don't have them in iCloud anymor, nore on my MacBook. BUT, it seems the mail file can be restored from my last TimeMachine backup. The only question is : WHERE IS IT ? What's its name ?

  • Restore from iCloud backup. Pictures missing and ones there are blurry?

I went to the Apple Store and got a new phone so they went and did a restore from backup from iCloud. So, everything was fine and I went home and my apps were there. I look and only 900/1,700 photos transferred from iCloud onto the new device. Although, I have no more room on iCloud so they may still be there but because there is not enoguh wiggle room in the cloud for them to download, they cannot be pushed to the device. Or, more likely, my photos may be gone because the "genius" at Apple had wiped my phone so I'm not sure if my backup is still available or if it just says that it is. And, the 900 pictures that did transfer are all blurry and wont unblur so what should I do? Should I buy more storage and then restore this phone and restore from the previous iCloud backup? Help please

First of all, treat your device like a camera - always sync photos to a computer for archiving.  Many users have lost photos doing a restore from iCloud, and this is generally due to several reasons: only photos in the camera roll are backed up, and (it seems) iCloud messes up often enough when backup/restore is used.

  • Had my hard drive replaced and I've restored from TimeMachine backup. I have changed my username and now I can't access my old backups on my TimeMachine hard drive

I've recently had my hard drive replaced in the Apple Store.
I used time machine to backup and after I got my mac back with the new hard drive I restored all my files which are now on my computer and I can access it with no problems.
The problem is that I've changed my username (admin) and when I enter time machine, I can't access the backups of my old hard drive which is really frustrating.
A red negative sign appears on most folders. Also in macintosh HD/users there is a folder named with my old username and I get the same red negative sign in the folders.
Any idea what can be done about this?
If you need more info just ask.
    Thanks in advance

Turn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane. Leave the window open.
Navigate in the Finder to your backup disk, and then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the top level of the volume. If you back up over a network, you'll first have to mount the disk image file containing your backups by double-clicking it. Descend into the folder until you see the snapshots, which are represented by folders with a name that begins with the date of the snapshot. Find the one you want to restore from. There's a link named "Latest" representing the most recent snapshot. Use that one, if possible. Otherwise, you'll have to remember the date of the snapshot you choose.
Inside the snapshot folder is a folder hierarchy like the one on the source disk. Find one of the items you can't restore and select it. Open the Info dialog for the selected item. In the Sharing & Permissions section, you may see an entry in the access list that shows "Fetching…" in the Name column. If so, click the lock icon in the lower right corner of the dialog and authenticate. Then delete the "Fetching…" item from the icon list. Click the gear icon below the list and select Apply to enclosed items from the popup menu.
Now you should be able either to copy the item in the Finder or to restore it in the time-travel view. If you use the time-travel view, be sure to select the snapshot you just modified. If successful, repeat the operation with the other items you were unable to restore. You can select multiple items in the Finder and open a single Info dialog for all of them by pressing the key combination option-command-I.
When you're done, turn TM back ON and close its preference pane.

  • IPad restored from Iphone deleted all data and backups

    ****,
I just updated to 10.6.4 and had my ipad connected after the update but during sync I realised the screen looks different and while it as recognised as an iPad in the left hand menu on top it mentioned syncing iPhone. After sync I realised all my data and settings are gone so I disconnected and connected again and this time it seems to sync as an ipad but still all data is gone.
I know need to restore from time machine back up.
Apple fix your software if I loose my data and back up during sync this is not ready for consumers.

  • HT201250 Restoring from TM - Need all programs reinstalled?

Hi - I need to restore my entire system from my TM backup.  I erased my hard drive to reinstall Snow Leopard.  Do I need to resinstall all my programs (i.e. Office, etc.) BEFORE doing a restore from TM in Disk Utility?
    Thanks

If, at this point, you select "from a Time Machine" then your old computer set up should be recreated on the new target. That would include all programs, user accounts, files, etc.
I have done this several times and have never had to re-install anything. You MIGHT need to re-enter an authorization code (e.g. for Microsoft Office, or an Adobe program) depending on whether you are restoring your system to a new hard drive or to the old hard drive. Sometimes when restoring to a new hard drive, the software recognizes that the disk is diffferent and thinks you're on a new computer that requires re-entering the code.
The last time I did this I didn't have to re-enter anything at all. Once I had to re-enter a MS-Office code previously.

  • Problem with iTunes after system restore from TimeMachine

Recently I had to do a full restore of my system from TimeMachine.
Now when I attempt to start iTunes I receive the following error messages:
"You do not have enough access privileges for this operation"
    and also this one:
         "An unknown error occurred (-45054)
. . . and then iTunes closes.  Does anybody have any idea how to fix this situation?

This is one of the rare occasions when you should run Repair Permissions (not Repair Disk) in Disk Utility. Ignore the many false warnings that it produces. If there's no change, follow the instructions in this support article.

  • Damaged install disk for Snow leopard. How can I restore from timemachine

    Hello,
I got SMART warning about my hard disk, I got it replaced by a shop, but said I would do OS restore myself. (cant afford cost )
Thought it would be simple - but it is anything but.
It appears my install DVD is damaged, so was not able to boot with Grey OS install disk - holding the C key.
I managed to get iMac to boot up using the old disk  - using firewire dock. However I was not able to restore old disk and OS to new disk, Due to IO read error.
(this is why I had the SMART warning).
So I am unable to get the OS on the new HD using the old disk or the DVD as these are both damaged.
The computer is running, so I thought I would try buying and downloading LION - then using the migration tool .  The download is still running after 2 days.
I went to apple store, and was told that they cannot replace DVD , so I should bring in the iMac = and pay for the restore.  Dont wish to do this.
As I have the computer and OS running, is there anything I can do to get a time machine restore from another backup disk (USB).
This I hope would resolve my woes.......

Call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775 (telephone numbers for other countries - http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57). Provide the serial number and specifications of the Mac.
Sorry - my profile is wrong. Disk is 10.6.2  It is the original disk that came with the machine.
