Restore from TM backup onto new internal HD

I apologize if this is a redundant post.
Okay, I just upgraded my internal HD from 160 gb to 1 tb. Awesome right?
So here's my problem. Booting from my Snow Leopard install disk, I successfully erased and formatted the new drive to Mac OS X extended (journaled), as every forum anywhere says to do. Proceeding from there, my intentions were to select the backup to restore from, which was approximately 2 hours before this posting. Upon selecting "restore from backup" from the utilities drop-down menu, I clicked continue, and selected the FireWire device on which my backup is located.
After that, the problems begin. It says that no time machine backups can be found. I checked on anothe machine, and the backups on the external backup drive are indeed there and fully intact.
I have the original drive, in which the state should be the same of my last TM backup, but I really don't want to go back and re-install the hardware and then back again to my new one.
Is there any immediately obvious reason why my TM backup wouldn't show up upon selecting the drive as a source for a full system restore?
I greatly appreciate any help from you guys.

I figured it out eventually through use of the migration protocol within the installer. I wouldn't recommend it, and I wish the time machine restore would've worked better. Oh well, I've been working with this 1TB HDD ever since with no problems.

  • HT4859 I forgot to click Restore from iCloud Backup on new Device.

I forgot to click Restore from iCloud Backup on new Device, and then signed in on the Cloud with the same Apple ID I used to create the Cloud on my old iPhone.  Can i still access my CLoud backup for apps, photos, etc.?

You'll have to start over by going to Settings>General>Reset and tapping Erase All Content and Settings.  Then go back through the setup screens again and this time choose Restore from iCloud backup (see image below).  Note: your iCloud account and iCloud data will still be in your account and will be synced back to your device when you sign back in.  You also may want to connect your device to your charger as restoring from backup can take some time to complete.

  • Trying to restore from icloud backup to new phone

I have just bought a new phone as old one was damaged.  I am trying to restore from icloud backup.  when it asks for a rescue email address it won't accept the address I am submitting even though it is not any of the addresses that are already registered with icloud as apple id, alternate or rescue emails.  this has happened with two different email addresses now, neither of which icloud have a previous record of.  not sure what to do now!

You actually have to go through extra steps of setting up your phone as new, updating and then erasing and restoring from that back up.

  • I restored multiple TM backups onto new HDD, need to find/erase extra files

Help! My original 60GB HDD crashed on my iBook. With Applecare warranty, it was replaced with a new 120GB HDD. I attempted to restore last backup from 160GB external HDD using Time Machine. I somehow restored all three previous backups onto iBook. Now my iBook has triple the size of data stored on it. How do I locate and erase the extra files from my iBook?

    Hello iBook_user
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
A "do over" would probably be the best and fastest way to go!
Pop in you Install Disk, erase the Internal HD and Restore from the last Time Machine backup before the Internal went south.

  • New HD, tried to restore from TM backup, now new disc full

My mac HD failed, I had a new one installed.  I tried to restore from external TM backup, but it didn't seem to work.  I tried two times - the second time, it failed and indicated that I didn't have space on my new drive.  My original drive was 320g, new drive is 500g.  I had about 80g of data on the new drive.  Finder now shows that the new drive has only 25g available (old backup was about 280g).  My attempt to restore to my last backup (3/27/2012) didn't seem to work, my old files are not on my new machine.
I'm thinking my best bet is just to undo whatever has been done to my new drive.  I don't have a problem formatting the new drive, as there is nothing really on it that must be saved at this point.  I am not well versed in Macs (obviously), but I have enough tech sense to follow steps if somebody could offer them.  How can I undo this?  Should I just format the new HD and do a Snow Leopard install from scratch, and then try again to restore from my time machine backup?
My thanks in advance for suggestions - please be gentle with me (luddite).

If you migrated the backups after making a user account, it has probably created new accounts.
Might be easier to reinstall and use the setup assistant to import your TM stuff.
Have a read of Pondini's TM articles - may help.

  • When I try 'restore from iTunes Backup' for new iPhone it says the 'backup "(name)" cannot be restored to this iPhone because the software on the iPhone is too old'

I don't know how to resolve this so I can set up the phone?
It's an upgrade from 4S to 5S if that's any help and I have checked if there are any updates which have not been done on the old phone and it says there isn't.

    Why not?
How are you trying to do this?
Plug it into your computer, open iTunes, select it in iTunes then click Restore Backup...

  • Restoring from iTunes backup of my 4s onto my new 5s is missing all my photo albums

My laptop is being repaired and therefore I have nothing from my iTunes library such as photo albums, music etc, except what is currently on my iPhone 4s. I may or may not be able to recover what is on my old laptop and won't know for several more weeks.
Meanwhile, I asked Apple prior to purchasing my 5s if I would be able to transfer EVERYTHING that is currently on my 4s, into it, I was told "absolutely".
So yesterday I used my friends outdated but functional laptop to download the newest iTunes and proceeded to backup my 4s. Then I restored from that backup onto my new 5s. On the first attempt the 5s was missing all photo albums (only had camera roll and videos) as well as 75% of my apps and what seemed like my entire music library! however upon closer inspection it seems to have had all of the music listed but not on the iPhone! each song had a little cloud with a downward arrow protruding from it. Not sure what that is about because the majority of my music is from discs and downloads that I manually added to my iTunes library, not from purchases made in the iTunes Store. Regardless, it does seem I have those songs available so this isn't the problem. The missing photo albums and apps is the issue. So I attempted a second restore of the same backup file. This time the apps seemed to have all come through but still no photo albums. I am now underway on my third attempt in the hopes that they will materialize the same way the missing apps did on round two. I will know in two hours when it finishes but I am not optimistic.
Can anyone help me sort this out?

Actually it only restored about 1000 of 4000 songs, so 3000 songs missing as well. And the 3rd attempt didn't yield any more songs or photo albums.

  • Trying to figure out how to restore an iPhoto Library from a backup onto a new system.

I had an old imac that  died but I have backups of everything. I want to restore the iPhoto Libary to another system on another login
The old system was an iMac that was running I think either 10.5.8 or 10.6 and I think iPhoto6. I want to restore from a backup onto a newer iMac running 10.8.1 with iPhoto 9.3.2. When I go to the backup I see the iphoto libray, but it does not show the icon I was expecting. What I see is
Not the icon I thought I would see. When I double click I get a terminal window and I can see all of the files
So how can I get these photos onto my new system?
    Thanks

The backup was made via Time Machine. I want to take an account from an old machine to a different newer machine in the house. I tried using the migration assitant to move files onto the new system and all seems well except for photos. When iPhoto startes up it appears to recognize the photos and I can see thumbnails when I flip through, but I do not see full sized photos. How can i see all of the full sixe photos and make sure the conversion pulled my pictures over?

I got a new iphone 6.  When I restore my phone from my icloud backup my most recent photos and messages not restored from icloud backup.  How do I get the most recent backup onto my new phone?

    Hello, Anita.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand that you are wanting to restore your new iPhone 6 from an iPhone 5 backup.  This sounds like the iOS version of your old iPhone 5 may be newer than what was installed on your iPhone 6.  Try going through the steps in the article below.
iOS: Unable to restore from backup of a newer device
I would also check to see the backup dates in iTunes and if the  backup is located on iCloud instead of iTunes.
Back up and restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iCloud or iTunes

  • HT201269 tried to restore backup onto new iPhone 4 from old one, but only get error message (-1)??? Help please.

Have tried over and over again. Won't restore backup onto new iPhone 4. I updated the software first, have tried wiping phone and starting fresh. Continue to get message at an error occured. Sometimes it says (-1).

Well, the obviously solution is to use separate Apple ID's for iCloud.

  • My ipod won't sync and it keeps coming up with an error message saying "internal error" or it tries to get me to restore from a backup. All of my music and movies have been wiped from my ipod and the apps don't work. The backups don't work either. help.

I plugged my ipod touch into my computer to sync it and it came up with an error message saying that it encoutered an internal error and it refused to sync.
I then unplugged it and plugged it back in and this time it told me that I needed to restore from a backup or set it up as a new ipod. I tried to restore from a backup but it came up with the error message "Backup session failed" every time. I then looked on my ipod and all of my music and movies are gone though it still says that they are on the ipod in itunes. I decided to use the restore function and let that finish. After restoring it still doesn't allow me to sync or back up and The music and movies can still not be seen. I am currently attempting to copy the music and movies to my ipod though this did not work with my apps as they transfered but when I attempted to open them they just crash... If someone could please help me it would be great. It is driving me crazy.

If you get an error that says can't backup, try moving the existing backup file to a safe location and thry again. again. You can find the location of the backup file here:

  • Problem restoring Iphone 4 backup onto my new Iphone 5 with Itunes!

I just purchased a new Iphone 5, started it and in the configuration chose restore from itunes backup. The Iphone was connected to Itunes and the Iphone 4 backup restored onto my new phone, however only very few apps made it to the new Iphone 5! Any idea? Diskspace is the same on both phones and not full at all.

iTunes 10.7 and the iPhone 5 require Mac OS X 10.6.8 or newer. Mac OS X 10.6.8 requires an Intel Mac with at least 1GB of RAM; to get it, click here, buy and install the DVD, and run Software Update.

  • I previously had an iTouch, now a new iPhone. Setup as new iPhone, or restore from iTouch backup?

I previously had an iTouch (3rd generation - 32 GB), now I have a new iPhone 4S. During the beginning of the setup process in iTunes, after reegistering the new iPhone with APPLE, when I am asked to set it up as new iPhone, or to restore it from my previous iTouch backup, which do I choose? It isn't clear to me, and I can't find the answer anywhere.
If I choose to set it up as a new iPhone, will I lose all my apps and all my previous settings (and start over)?
My computer is a MacBook laptop.

If you set up it as new, you will lose the settings, but not your apps. You can try to restore from the backup because you will recover your settings and your apps automatically

  • HT3406 If I choose "restore from iTunes backup" to move everything from old phone.  Will I still be able to use the old phone for music and apps?  Can the old phone be docked up to the computer?  Or will the new and old phone overwrite each other in some

If I choose "restore from iTunes backup" to move everything from old iphone to a new one, will I still be able to use the old phone for music and apps?  Can the old phone be docked up to that same computer every now and then?  Or will the new and old phone overwrite each other in some way?  In other words, are the two phones treated as different devices when the "restore" option is used to set up the new phone?   Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can use the old iPhone as an iPod touch.

  • HT201269 iTunes is recognizing my iPod as a new iPod even though I have my old stuff restored to it and it says the name of it but still asks to set up as new iPod or restore from a backup.

iTunes is recoznizing my iPod as a new iPod and only gives me the options of set up as new iPod or to restore from a backup. I put my old backup on it and everytime I plug it in it still recognizes it as a new iPod. I've tried restoring it several times and it doesn't help anything and I've also uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it but it didn't help. Please I really need some help I can't download any music with it doing this.

There maybe better ways to do this, but this worked for me when things stopped working a couple of updates back.
Try this; Make sure your stuff is backed up on your computer first. plug the iPod to your computer and do the restore to factory setting. Then set up as if it's a brand new out of the box iPod. (DON"T use your backup copy) Go through all the steps of first time set up. Once complete, add back all your stuff, music, apps, pictures, etc. from your computer. I know it's a pain, but it worked for me.
By the way; the reason I'm doing this total restore is the RED square in the RED circle. All my music downloaded from CDs became unreadable / unplayable today, (worked fine yesterday-- today crap!!) and none of the fixes listed in this forum would work for me. So I started over, after the restore, the RED circles are gone and my music is playing.
    Hope it works, Good Luck!
