Restore function in yosemite for cloning?

i just ran across the restore function in disk utility and it seems like this could be used for CLONING my 1 TB boot OS to a 4 TB boot OS is that right?
if so it seems like i boot into the recovery volume and then select the DESTINATION which would be the 4 TB drive is that right? and then the source would be the 1 TB boot OS?
then i would just shutdown, pull the 1 TB boot OS and replace it with the new 4 TB boot OS is that right?
or is this a bad idea and i will get better results with CCC?
Can you use the "Restore" function in Disk Utility to clone MacBook Pro HDD and make a bootable copy?
THANKS

OK. THANKS.
so i am printing these out to try and review them.
how's this look? i guess i am seeing the designation "minotaur_CLONE" that i am hoping to get rid of.

I sent in my iPhone 6 for repair. I used restore on the loaner phone I was given, and the contacts, texts, reminders, and Safari pages all showed up. My phone is back, and when I used the restore function again, those items are missing. I do not use iCloud because I have no wifi at home, limited data available for regularly backing up, and I have a 64GB phone and don't wish to pay to upgrade from the 5GB iCloud storage. Am I doing something wrong? It worked so seamlessly on my loaner phone that I am completely stumped as to why it will not restore those items to my original phone again.

The iphone is designed to be synced to your computer or cloud service.  Your contacts should be in whatever program/service you have chosen to sync.
If you have failed to do this, then they are likely gone.

    FYI

Hi Susan.  I hope there's a better 'fix' coming to replace this "uninstall the updates, restore, then reinstall the updates after the restore".  This kind of workaround requires that all of us remember that there's a problem
with KB3023562 and KB3004375 from now until the end of WS2012E.  Not sure I'll remember this 6 months from now when the problem crops up during a restore.   -:(

  • In Mavericks, there was a drop-down to select outgoing SMTP server. How do I restore that functionality in Yosemite?

My university email addresses forward to my Fastmail account. I want to be able to send through the university SMTP servers. Mavericks had a drop-down in the compose window to send from a server of my choice. Yosemite does not have this. Is there a way to enable the equivalent functionality in Yosemite?

I still have Mavericks on my work computer. This is the functionality I want to enable on Yosemite:
That way if I switch the from field I can also switch the SMTP server to match. I can not find anyway to make Yosemite pair the correct from address to the correct SMTP server, or a way to manually select the SMTP server (as was possible in Mavericks).

  • Waiting For Ipod Restore Function error occurred 9

I try to restore my ipod touch I see the screen with the music icon disc and usb cable.
It starts to restore but says waiting for ipod.
I can see the Apple logo and a continuous circle at the bottom rotating clockwise.
It just stays like that even after several hours.
I even tried loading the cable that comes with the ipod classic.
When I disconnect the usb cable it says:
The IPOD "ipod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (9)

Try forcing your iPod into Recovery Mode prior to restoring:
Disconnect the iPod from your computer. Hold the Sleep/Wake button (on top) until you see a red slider that says "Slide to Power Off." Drag the slider across the screen to allow the device to power off. Then, press and hold the Home button on the front of the iPod WHILE you are connecting it to your computer... so, hold down Home, connect the USB cable, and then release Home when you see the Apple logo appear. iTunes should state that it has detected an iPod or iPhone in recovery mode, and prompt you to restore it.
See if that allows you to restore

  • Can you use the "Restore" function in Disk Utility to clone MacBook Pro HDD and make a bootable copy?

I'm cloning my MacBook Pro's HDD to a SSD and didn't really want to install another app (SuperDuper, CCC), can I just use the Restore function in Disk Utility app to clone it and make a bootable copy on my SSD?
    Thank you for the help!

    Yes.
Clone Yosemite, Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

  • Disk Utility Restore Function

If I use the restore function in Disk Utility to copy me Macintosh HD drive to an external drive, can I later restore it back and have everything the same?
I am going to reinstall the OS, but am concerned that my last time machine backup may not be up to date and have everything, I can not boot into the HDD, and I know that if I restore the same image I might have the same issues as now with the OS, but that is not my concern at the moment. So, I am copying the Macintosh HD to an external drive using the restore tab and want to make sure that if I do it the other way around, will it be the same and will I have a backup of all my data (particularly my local copies of mail folder) once I restore?
If this does not work, what is the default location for my mail items so I can pull all those and preferably my preferences along with it as I have a lot of rules and other items in mail that I would like to keep.

If I use the restore function in Disk Utility to copy me Macintosh HD drive to an external drive, can I later restore it back and have everything the same?
    Yes.
The Restore option of Disk Utility is for cloning one disk volume to another, also known as a full backup. Clones are 100% reversible. Note that if you use the Restore option of Disk Utility it will erase the target volume. If you are using Lion or later you must boot to the Recovery HD in order to clone the main startup volume.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
To reverse the process simply swap the Source for the Destination and vice-versa.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the arrow button below the icon.

  • Best for cloning - Retrospect Duplicate, SuperDuper!, or CCC?

I would like opinions on what is the "best" and fastest program for cloning my startup volume to another bootable drive. I have been using Carbon Copy Cloner for quite a while, but the new version is still beta. I have Retrospect, but have used only the "backup", not the "duplicate" function. And, I have seen good review about SuperDuper! If anyone can give me comparisons on these, to include speed of cloning/duplicating, I would be much obliged. Thanks.

Retrospect is an excellent backup utility although it hasn't been updated in a long time. However, the easiest way to clone is to use the Restore option of Disk Utility:
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    8. Select the destination drive on the Desktop and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the bottom in the Ownership and Permissions section be sure the box labeled "Ignore Permissions on this Volume" is unchecked. Verify the settings for Ownership and Permissions as follows: Owner=system with read/write; Group=admin with read/write; Other with read-only. If they are not correct then reset them.
For added precaution you can boot into safe mode before doing the clone.
    For general backup:
    Basic Backup
My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.

Not able to sign into Blackberry Protect.  Backup and Restore function not working. Message is: "Your device isn't associated with a Blackberry ID."  My Blackberry Messenger and Blackberry World is working fine so I am sure its not an ID issue on the phone.  I can sign into Link, Blackberry.com and Protect.  I see my device in Protect but cannot send messages or view it on a map.  Times out with cannot reach device message.  BB Protect on Device has a swirling circle beside the on/of switch.  Cannot turn off.
I have deleted Link and re-installed.
I have reset phone to default(factory) and signed in.
    OS level is 10.2.1.3062
    BB Link is 1.2.3.56
    Solved!

I managed to figure this out myself. I had to delete the device from the Blackberry Protect website.  protect.blackberry.com.  I wiped my device again and signed in with my Blackberry ID.  I dont know if the step of wiping was necessary as I did not try my backup with the current configuration on the device following the delete.  Restore is in progress for me!

Here's an article that will help:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/what-happened-to-backup-restore
In previous versions of Windows, you could use Backup and Restore to back up your files or create and use a system image backup or repair disc.
Windows 8.1 gives you choices about how you can recover your PC and back up your personal files.
    Reset or refresh your PC
If you’re having a problem with your PC, you can refresh Windows without losing your photos, music, videos, and other personal files. You can also start over by resetting it to factory settings. For more info, see
How to refresh, reset, or restore your PC.
Back up or restore personal files
You can use File History to back up the files on your PC in the Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos, and Desktop folders. Over time, File History builds a history of your files. You'll first need to set up a File History drive and turn File History on. For
    more info, see
Set up a drive for File History. If your original files are lost, damaged, or deleted, you can restore them. You can also browse and restore different versions of your files. For more info, see
Restore files or folders using File History.
    Use System Image Backup
You can use System Image Backup like you did in previous verison of Windows.
    To open System Image Backup
Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click
    Search.)
Enter File History in the search box, tap or click File History, and then click
    System Image Backup.

  • Best tool for cloning drive and regular back-ups

A 500gb 7200.4 seagate drive just arrived, and I'm intending on cloning the 500gb 5400rpm stock drive in my 15" 2.8ghz unibody MBP to the 7200.4 (attached in a 2.5 SATA USB enclosure), and then using the 7200.4 as the main drive, once I've found time time to install it internally. Once I've done that, the 5400rpm stock drive will be used for regular back-ups via completely cloning the upgraded internal disk.
I have CCC installed, but I've rarely used it, and I've noticed that the OS X disk services appears to have a 'create image' option. And then there's Time Machine, which I know very little about. The most important thing is that I need a bootable disk which, in theory, could simply be installed in a new machine and I'll be right where I left off. Which is the best back-up tool for this?

    Hi Neil,
I have CCC installed, but I've rarely used it, and I've noticed that the OS X disk services appears to have a 'create image' option. And then there's Time Machine, which I know very little about. The most important thing is that I need a bootable disk which, in theory, could simply be installed in a new machine and I'll be right where I left off. Which is the best back-up tool for this?
CCC is a very good tool for what you gave in mind. SuperDuper http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html is another one in the same league.
Time Machine is a good backup tool, since it backups once the complete content of your OSX harddisk and further on only the changed files.
It can also be used the restore the OSX but for this you have to boot from the OSX DVD.
To me using CCC or SuperDuper would be exactly what you are looking for:
Making a bootable clone onto your external HD, from which you can either boot-up your Mac or simply reinstall the external HD in your Mac.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Why is the Restore function in disk utility so slow?

I am using the Restore functionality in Disk Utility to copy my old 250GB Time Machine disk (which is now full) to a new 1.1TB disk.
250GB is calculating to take 11 hours to copy. Both disks are connected via FireWire (old one is FireWire 400, new one is FireWire 800).
If my math is correct, that's only 6.4MB per second.
Why is it so monumentally slow?

That's pretty much normal for a FW400 drive.  Restore takes more time that some copy programs because of the file verification it performs.
