Restore HD onto New Computer
I soon will get getting a new G5.Up to now, I've always cloned my harddrive to a LaCie external,including all applications,plug-ins,3rd party software. Will I be able to clone onto the new computer the applications,plug-ins, and 3rd party software??? I cloned using CCC. What about the OS??? I recall that going to another computer from the original could be a problem, but I can't recall the answer....Thanks!

I just migrated to a G5 Quad and discovered by acccident that the new Quad would not boot from a hard drive with 10.4.2. I had connected the wrong extrenal drive by mistake.
You might find that this works better if you upgrade to 10.4.4 and create a new clone with that version of OS X.
What I did to migrate from my old G4 to the new Quad was to take the system drive from my old G4 which was SATA and install it into the second slot of the Quad. I then ran Migration Assistant to move all of applications over to the Quad. I up and running on the Quad in less than 30 minutes which includes all of the unpacking and hardware setup.

You restore the media to your new computer using the backup you made of your old computer before it died. You did backup your computer, right?

I am in the process of trying to transfer my iTunes library from one computer to another. Some of the music/film info has been edited (by me) in my library (using get info). When put onto new computer (following apple's instructions- using an external hard drive) the info has gone back to how it was before i edited it.. Help!?

Have tried over and over again. Won't restore backup onto new iPhone 4. I updated the software first, have tried wiping phone and starting fresh. Continue to get message at an error occured. Sometimes it says (-1).
Well, the obviously solution is to use separate Apple ID's for iCloud.

All of your media that you bought from iTunes you can restore by plugging in the iPod and then right clicking on the iPod icon in the iTunes side bar and select "Transfer Purchases from (name of your iPod)"

Trouble getting backed up music onto new computer
Hi, my motherboard was destroyed on my old computer, but the computer technicians were able to back up my itunes music onto four DVDs. However, when I installed itunes onto my new computer, opened it up and then put my discs in my drive, itunes did not prompt me - as the itunes instructions say - to click restore. so what i did was go under file and click on "Add Folder to Library." I did this with all four discs and all of the music showed up in my library. So i tried to sync it with my ipod, and in the end most of the music on my ipod disappeared. And although everything is still listed in my library, if i click on many of the songs i get a message that it can't be found.
I'm looking for some solutions to this problem. Any ideas?I lost my old library that was stored on a hrad drive that died. I did buy a new ipod so I could continue downloading stuff. I've now found this site that enables you to access the library on an ipod without itunes updating your ipod using touchcopy. You get to work with 40 tracks for free and then you need to buy the full version for $19.99. I wasn't sure about it but it does work.

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using a lot of the utilities your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.

Depending on how you put the files on the drive, there are different ways to copy the information to the new system.
If you used the WD Smartware backup software to backup your files, you will need to use the same software to restore the files to the new computer.
If it was with the WD Smartware, please see the page 49 of the user manual for detailed information on how to retrieve your files.

I had my iPhone synced to my old computer. I connected it to my new computer and it won't allow me to put any of my old music onto iTunes without deleting it all first. How can I keep my old music and put it onto my new iTunes?
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself independently backed up against loss. To use a device with a new computer you transfer the content from the old computer (or its backup) directly to the new computer, not the device to the new computer. Media syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.

Hi, first of all my apologies if I'm posting in the wrong forum. Please let me know if I am, and where I should post my question/problem.
First of all I'm quite new to Itunes and the Ipod. I received an Ipod Nano 3rd generation as a gift several months ago. On my old computer (Dell Desktop, Windows XP), I had downloaded Itunes, had no trouble keeping my library and syncing the Ipod each time I needed to, or whenever I charged my Ipod. I also had my Ipod registered on my Itunes. My problem is I don't have access to my old computer any longer. I recently had to abruptly change computers. I'm currently using Toshiba laptop and Windows XP. Can I download Itunes again onto this new computer and register my Ipod again? If I do this, how can I ensure I don't lose my current library. I have less than 500 songs at present, but I don't want to lose all the music I paid for. But I don't want to mess anything up by registering my Ipod again. Am I making sense? I'm going to need to charge my Ipod soon, so if anyone has any ideas to help me, I'd appreciate it. Also, I didn't have any way to backup my Itunes library by burning to disc. Eventually, I'll be acquiring another laptop, a Dell laptop that will be using Windows Xp also. Sorry if this is confusing. Yes you can download the iTunes program onto your new computer, you don't need to register the iPod over again to use it on another computer.

Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.
