Restore iPad from time machine backup

Hi All,
Unfortunately I recently had my macbook and ipad stolen after a burglary at my house. Thankfully I carry out routine back ups using my time capsule.
However I replaced my Macbook Pro for a Macboo Pro Retina and the hard drive is not large enough to completely restore the computer entirely from time machine.
I am looking at restoring my itunes to the new macbook together with the iPad and iPhone back ups so that if I plug the new devices in they will sync and (hopefully) everything will be seamless.
I managed to get the itunes onto the new macbook however the back up for the ipad and iphone do not seem to be listed under 'devices' in the itunes preferences.
Does anybody have any idea how I can get these back ups so I can sync my ipad? I had photos and videos on the device which I would like to put on the new device.
Many thanks for any help you guys can give me.

As a follow up, Axeman I would like to thank you. Your advice helped solve the issue.
I ended up having to go into Terminal to make hidden files/folders visible. When I then entered the Time Machine backup I was able to see the library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
From here I copied all the back ups visible, then pasted straight into the coresponding local folder on my Macbook.
Enter iTunes and look under preferences and devices and all my back ups were immediately listed.
A quick restore from back up and everything is back and running as though there was never a problem.
Hope others find this useful as well as I am sure there are people out there who face a similar problem.

Do I need to uninstall CS4 and reinstall?
    Unfortunately yes.
Also run the Cleaner Tool prior to reinstalling
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
Restoring from Time Machine backups invariably breaks the activation mechanism (Error 150:30) and there's no easy way to fix a 150:30 error other than via re-installing.

  • HT201250 Circle and cross through iTunes icon afte the seagate hard drive replaced and restored data from time machine backup.

Circle and cross through iTunes icon: had the seagate hard drive replaced and restored data from time machine backup. Why does the iTunes icon have a circle and cross through it? As though incomplete? tried everything and still Circle and cross through iTunes icon.

No it isn't something you'd find on the computer, it has to be custom installed from the 10.6 installer disc or Software Update if it wasn't before.  It allows you to use older PowerPC applications on your Mac.   On the other hand double check the version of iTunes you have does not require 10.7 minimum either.

  • HT201250 (1) Where is the "Time Machine menu" and the choice to "Enter Time Machine" (mentioned in the "Restoring data from Time Machine backups" section)?

    1) Where do I find the "Time Machine menu" and the choice to "Enter Time Machine" (as mentioned in the "Restoring data from Time Machine backups" section in the Mac Support article "Mac Basics: Time Machine")?
    2) How would I restore e.g. a particular photo from a backup I made with Time Machine? I can see how this is done with Word documents, but can't see how to do it with photos?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    1. The Time Machine icon is on the menu bar.
    2. If you want to do that with individual photos, it's the same way as for documents. If you want to do it with iPhoto, you have to restore the whole iPhoto library, not only one photo

  • Restored system from Time Machine backup disk but the system could not start-up

On MacBook Pro early 2008, restored the entire system from Time Machine backup disk to the entire disk.
The previous system on the backup disk had FileVault turned on.
The restore completed successfully and I was prompted to restart the system via the new restored system disk.
I heard the normal start-up sound, then the Apple logo, but it stuck at the logo screen. And the cooling fan run at almost full speed?
I have been waiting for a few hours, guessing it might FileVault the disk.
Finally I have to shutdown the machine as it stuck at the logo screen forever.
Anyone has the same issue? Any ideas?

BTW, I also tried Repair the system disk, Fix permissions via Disk Utility.
I guess I must lose some files either during the backup or the restore.

  • How do I restore iBooks from time machine backup?

through the Genius Bar I had to erase my iMacs harddrive. So far I have reinstalled iTunes, which is over a TB in size, and Safari, mail and calendars restored automatically from iCloud.
MY trouble is I can't find iBooks on the disc I used as a time machine backup. I had over a thousand items in iBooks and really need it back!  I was surprised it didnt back up when I plugged my iPad into iTunes and put everything from my iPad back to the computer.
    THanks!

Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iBooksX
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Quit the application if it's running. Enter Time Machine and restore the selected item from a snapshot.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select

  • Restoring movies from Time Machine backup

Last night I tried restoring my photos from a Time Machine backup. It appears that all my movies (.avi files) have been restored as .jpg files. When I open the pictures folder, it automatically opens iPhoto and starts importing my pictures. Is there something I can do to make sure that my .avi files are imported as .avi files and not .jpg files? Thanks!

    From Apple Help:
    To restore files:
Open a window for the item you want to restore.
For example, if you accidentally deleted a file from your Documents folder, open the Documents
folder. If you want to recover an email message, open your inbox in Mail.
If you’re missing an item from the desktop, you don’t need to open a window.
Click the Time Machine icon in the Dock.
If Time Machine isn’t in the Dock, look for it in the Applications folder.
Use the arrows or the timeline along the right side of your screen to browse through all the
    backups Time Machine has created.
If you need more information about an item, double-click to preview it.
The windows behave just like Finder windows, so you can open folders, click items in the sidebar,
and use the search field in the upper-right corner of the window.
When you find the item you want to restore, select it and then click Restore.
You can restore individual items, multiple items, folders, or your entire hard disk.
If an item you restore has the same name as another item on your computer, you’re asked if you
want to keep the current item, the restored item, or both.
The restored item is returned to its original location. For example, if it is found in the Documents
folder, it is returned to the Documents folder. Time Machine may ask if you want to re-create one
or more folders in order to return a restored item to its original location.

  • Restoring System from Time Machine backup - only option is older backup

I have two drives in a Mac Pro - a system drive and a data drive. Yesterday morning the system drive died. The computer hung and when I manually restarted it, I got the circle with a line icon, and then on a subsequent restart, after resetting the PRAM, I got the ? folder icon.
I restarted with the install disk in, and booted into Disk Utility. I attempted to repair the system drive, but it was reported to be corrupted and not repairable.
I installed a new drive, booted back into Disk Utility, formatted the new drive, and initiated a "restore from Time Machine".
My problem is, once the list of "complete" Time Machine backups came up, the most recent one listed was for October of this year, almost 3 months ago. In that time, Time Machine has been on and running without issue. I know there were Time Machine updates made for this computer the morning of my crash, and the day before, etc. But in terms for restoring my system, my most recent restore point is late October.
I went ahead and restored to that most recent Time Machine "complete" backup, and several hours later my system is back up and running, but as it was three months ago, not yesterday morning.
Why, if Time Machine has been performing hourly backups without fail, was I unable to restore to something more recent? If I connect to Time Machine (on a Time Capsule) from the computer in question (after the restore) and browse the backups on it, the most recent folder I see is 2011-01-14-190729 - still not as recent as I would hope (maybe the drive going bad was causing errors with very recent backups) but much more recent than October.
I would really like to be able to get my system back to a much more recent snapshot than it's at now. (I have disabled Time Machine backups on it in the meantime so as not to overwrite the backups I currently have)
    Any suggestions?

See #14 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
On the list of backups (point g there), click the "pop-up" menu; there may be two entries there. If so select the other one -- it may have the backups you want.

  • Can't restore files from Time machine backup?

I kinda successfully restored my files from Time Machine after a clean re-install of Snow Leopard (Time Machine thought they were new files, though, so backed up the 26 GB... waste of space), but now I'm trying to restore the files of the other user on the computer. In her pictures folder, I can't copy the iPhoto Library because I don't have permission to access it! The same problem occurred on my account too, but I was able to go to my Time Machine drive and manually change the permissions for the files I wanted, which doesn't work on her account.
I have made a Youtube video of the error:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1__PdyAetVg
Can anyone assist me in restoring the files? That's all I need help in. Thanks

    wrongusername wrote:
But if I transfer everything with the Setup Assistant, won't I once again be experiencing the problems I had?
If the problems were caused by your data. But that's extremely unlikely. It may have been an app, or, much more likely from your description, something corrupted in the Leopard OS. That's one of the problems with upgrading a sick system without knowing what or where the causes are. It's a bit like a brain surgeon operating on himself: if he isn't in tip-top shape to start with, his condition is likely to change, and not for the better.
Most of us would have recommended first simply doing a +*Repair Disk+* on your internal HD; if that didn't help, installing the "combo" Leopard update; if that didn't work, doing an +Archive and Install+ and re-installing the "combo."
After a clean re-install of Snow Leopard, my Mac worked fine again (except for the TM trouble). So it probably had something to do with my old files.
Probably not. Much more likely OSX was somehow damaged. And you got a whole new one.
How come I could read the files on my external HD and yet not be able to copy the files?
Time Machine uses special "deny everybody everything" permissions on it's backups, among other things, in an attempt to keep us mere mortals from moving, changing, or deleting things and corrupting them.

  • Upgrade MacBook Hard Drive - Restore System from Time Machine Backup?

I have a MacBook that I want to upgrade the hard drive of. Am I right in thinking, all I need to do is:
Run Time Machine one last time, to make a recent backup of the MacBook
Install the new hard drive in the MacBook
Insert the Snow Leopard DVD, and start a clean installation
During installation, select the option to Restore System From Backup...
Will this copy across ALL of the contents of the old MacBook's hard drive, to the new MacBook's hard drive? A perfect clone? Because that's what I want to do.

I performed the installation, restoring a Time Machine backup from the external hard drive to the new blank internal one I put inside the MacBook. Everything went fine, except for one problem.
Now, whenever I try to open Safari, it immediately crashes with the error message:
    "Safari quit unexpectedly
    Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)"
What's going on? How can I stop Safari from doing this? I've repaired permissions using Disk Utility, and Spotlight has finished re-indexing everything.

  • Can I restore Espionage from Time Machine backup?

I called AppleCare for assistance with Espionage and was told that my version was out of date. The AppleCare support rep said I should uninstall Espionage and install the new version. Unfortunately, I did.
Now it turns out that if you do that, all of your encrypted files are permanently lost. I asked AppleCare for assistance in undoing the damage they caused but was just told they don't provide support for 3rd party products.
Anybody out there know how to restore Espionage and its data files from a Time Machine backup?

  • Freeze when restoring Mail from Time Machine backup

I had to have the logic board and solid state drive replaced on my Retina MabookPro and before I dropped it off at the Genius Bar I did a full Time Machine backup to an external drive.    I have my fixed Mac back, and restored from that backup, but when I try and start Mail it says "Mail needs to import your messages" and then begins the progress bar for importing my messages.   The problem is that it always freezes somewhere during the import, and now I am afraid I have lost all of my old mail.
First off, why does it need to re-import?   Why can't it just work off the orignal Mail database backed up via Time Machine?   And secondly, is there an advanced rebuild or other option that can hopefully recover my mail database?    Anything else to try?
    -Lewis

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the text on the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is corrupt and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • Restored iMac from Time Machine backup - now it wants a password!

Hi - hope you can help!
I restored my iMac from a Time Machine backup after a hard drive password. My system (user account) was not password protected - if ever asked for a password, all I needed to do was press Enter. The Time Capsule itself was password protected, but only in so much as the admin access and the wi-fi.
After restoring overnight, I'm now presented with a login screen and two user accounts to choose from (my wife and mine) but it requires a password. Pressing enter doesn't work, nor do any of the Time Capsule passwords.
Previously the iMac was set up to auto login to my account and didn't need a password then.
Any ideas why this might suddenly require a password? Is it a standard system generated password I should know?
    Thanks for any help.
I'm running the latest version of OS X.
    Jon

Didn't have enough coffee yet. Of course, what I told you won't work, since you can't log in. This might work. You must boot into to Single User mode, Cmd-s at the Startup chime.
At the root# prompt enter the following commands.  Press RETURN after each:
    fsck -fy
    mount -uw /
    launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist
    dscl . -passwd /Users/username password
Replace "username" with  one of the user names and "password" with the desired password.
    Reboot
