Restore iPod nano in DFU mode?

I have a 6th gen nano (received a few months back in the battery replacement programme for 2nd gen nanos) which suddenly stopped working. I have tried holding Power + Volume Down buttons to reset without success.
Holding down these buttons while it is connected to a mac causes it show up as a 'USB DFU Device' in System Profiler. It does not appear in the side bar in iTunes, but iTunes does give an error message: 'The iPod software update server could not be contacted. The server does not support this version of iTunes'. iTunes is up to date and I'm running ML on this machine. (Have also tried it under older versions on other macs with Lion and SL.)
I have read suggestions to erase the nano, but it does not mount on the desktop or appear as a device in Disk Utility under OS X, or show up as a recognized device on a Windows machine.
Any suggestions?

I had updated to 10.8 only a fortnight ago, but figured I'd give the suggestion a shot. Upon connecting the nano for the first time after reinstalling iTunes, it stayed on 'waiting for ipod' for a _long_ time before giving a new error message:
"An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again. An unknown error occurred (1601)."
Subsequent attempts to connect give the original error: 'The iPod software update server could not be contacted. The server does not support this version of iTunes'. It is still showing up in System Profiler as a USB DFU Device. Quitting and re-opening iTunes get it to display the error again, so it is seeing it, and recognizes that it needs to be restored, but can't process it for some reason.
Google turns up a lot of jailbreak stuff for error 1601; will sift through and report back if I find anything that makes a difference.

  • Nano 4G DFU Mode?

Hello, I've got a iPod Nano 4th Gen.
When I try to restore the iPod in iTunes it gives the error 1601?
Connected to my laptop without iTunes it says 'DFU device'?
I can't get the iPod out of DFU mode to restore. Any help appreciated.

Have you tried using it with a program other than itunes, such as Sharepod.exe?
Also, if you have disk mode enabled, open it as a drive, and go to iPod_Control\Device. Look for a file called ExtendedSysInfoXml, and see what it says about the display.
I've unplugged the cable during restore (I've tried everything and anything to get the nano to unlock). It doesn't do a thing for unlocking, but it also didn't kill the display screen either.

  • HT4235 Itunes only sees ipod nano in disk mode and still won't sync it

I have to place my ipod nano in disk mode for itunes (or Windows for that matter) to find it. In disk mode Windows and Itunes see the ipod and it passes all the diagnostic tests save for the sync test where it can no longer see the ipod and apparently a file is also not found. I'm ready to just reset it, but am unable to make that happen.
This problem began when I downloaded some songs from Amazon and fumbled the job purchasing and downloading some of them twice. Not very smart, but it was late. Anyway, I also downloaded their Cloud player and had it pass the songs to itunes. It was in itunes that I saw the duplicate copies of the songs. Itunes and the cloud player proceeded to butt heads, I deleted the the extra song copies and also uninstalled the Amazon cloud player. Then itunes went into the state I've described above.
    I'd appreciate any help.

  • After restoring ipod nano it wont sync with itunes. states error 13019 occured

after restoring ipod nano it wont sync with itunes. states error 13019 occured

I seem to recall that another user has this problem and found that it was because of some corrupted music files they were trying to sync over.
Try syncing smaller bunches of tracks till you come upon the ones that cause the error. You should be able to find out which ones are causing the trouble this way.
The other user said they used something called MP3Diags. I cannot vouch for this software at all, I have never used it.
I did a quick search on "how to repair MP3 files on Mac" and also found this:

  • HT1339 after restoring ipod nano how do I get tunes back if they are in my music library

after restoring ipod nano how do I get tunes back if they are in my music librbary- thanks

Configure the music to sync back over to your device from under its Music configuration tab.  If your library is smaller than the capacity available on your Nano, you can set it to sync your entire music library by enabling the Sync Entire Library option from under this tab. Otherwies, you'll have to select only certain artists, albums, playlists, and genres.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, CherryPie!
Could you tell me if you have set your iPod Nano to 'Disk Mode' using the latest release of iTunes? If not, then this is your problem.

  • I put my ipod touch in DFU mode, but when I plug it into my computer the restore your ipod alert does not come up in itunes. What can/should I do?

I have been on the Apple Support page for several hours now and cannot find my exact circumstance and other suggestions have yet to help me. I purchased a locked ipod touch and when I plug it into my laptop itunes says "Itunes could not connect to ipod because it is locked with a passcode". The guy I bought it from told me the password but I failed to write it down and remember it and he has since moved so I can't find him. I have tried putting it in DFU mode and I can get it there, but then Itunes does not show the pop-up that everyone has said will come up with the alert about an ipod trying to restore itself so I cannot get it to do so. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,

When in DFU mode and connected to the computer iTunes does not say anything but iTunes will see the iPod and you can restore the iPod via iTunes. When in recovery mode and you connect, iTunes will say it found an iPod in recovery mode.

  • IPod Touch 4G DFU Mode Issues!!!

    Howdy
I have recently been having issues with my iPod Touch 4G whilst trying to restore it in DFU Mode after dropping it.
The issue first started when I had dropped it which left me crapping my pants worrying if it would turn on or not... sadly it did not turn back on which i have reason to believe that it had went into DFU mode. I then plugged it into my PC and iTunes recognised it but came up with a message saying this device is in recovery mode and needs restoring. I then went through all the procedure of restoring the device but as it got to about 80% done iTunes came up with error 1601.
I repeated the process a couple of times just make sure it wasn't a one off but it wasn't as it came up with the error code again and again and again after every go at restoring it. However I did notice that during one of the restores that the screens background light came on and then started going through the process of installing the iOS but then it came up with error 23 before it could do anything and then rebooted with a white screen and then back into DFU mode.
I've search google but couldnt find anything related to the issue i was having except for one that mentioned replacing the battery as it could be a hardware malfunction. The screen works obviously but I can't get it out of DFU mode and into the recovery mode with the iTunes logo to plug it into a PC.
If anyone has a resolution for this issue then it would be much appreciated.
    Kind regards
    Joshua

  • I try to put mi Ipod touch in dfu mode but it doesn't work

My Ipod touch doesnt respond, and i tried o put it in dfu mode to restore it like the technical support said to do it, and nothing happened..

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
