  • Restoring iPod Shuffle using windows vista if the device is not showing on itunes?

    Hello fellow iPod users
    I had this problem in the past, using different computers. Whenever I change the computer, this happens with my iPod... and the solution is always to restore it to factory default.
    Currently my iPod shuffle first generation is showing on Windows (Computer), but not on iTunes. I am operating. I tried all the procedures on the support website (re installed itunes, quicktime and all other apple software, changed security software, plugged and unplugged the iPod, reinstalled the usb ports)... after I tried extra procedings such as restoring system and changing to another computer, but the problem seems to continue. When I turn on iPod, it flashes the green and yellow light.
    When I plug another iPod on the computer, on the same USB port, iTunes recognizes it and it works perfectly.
    So the problem seems to be the same that I had in the past, exactly the same.
    My question then is this:
    I try to use the restore utilty provided on apple website, but it is not compatible with Windows Vista nor 7. The option given by Apple is to use iTunes to restore the device, but hey, it doesn´t show on the device list, so how can I restore it if it doesn´t show???
    I already had this exact same problem and the solution was always the same, but this time I don´t have an Windows XP computer available...
    I also had iTunes run a device connectivity diagnosis and it reported all positive results, including: iPod found and USB ports checked.
    Orion Noise is the iPod name, since its creation...
    Here is all the diagnosis info (in portuguese.... esta sendo executado means is being executed, is working, properly...

  • Restoring iPod shuffle

    After restoring my son's iPod shuffle (2nd gen) I am having trouble loading songs using the "autofill" command. I get the error message "The iPod cannot be updated. The required folder cannot be found."
    Any idea what I need to do to fix it? Thanks
    iPod Shuffle, 2nd generation   Windows XP
      Windows XP

    Hi tjwils528,
    There are a few things that can cause a "required folder cannot be found" kind of message with an iPod (this is actually the first time I've seen one of those error messages on here with a shuffle, but the same troubleshooting steps can be used).
    So, let's go ahead and work through some steps to try, one-by-one, and see if anything seems to work for you.
    The basic procedure with the following instructions would be to disconnect your iPod from your computer prior to actually performing the task.
    Then, when you are complete with that step, open iTunes, and connect your iPod to your computer again, to check if you are still getting the error message. Repeat this kind of sequence as you go onto each next possibility to try (sorry if any of the steps relate to an iPod with a display, not a shuffle).
    <hr>
    iTunes needs to be reinstalled:
    It's possible that iTunes needs to be reinstalled, perhaps because some required installation files were not loaded properly, or have been deleted.
    Disconnect your iPod from your computer.
    Go to "Add or Remove programs" in Control Panel. Find "iTunes" and "QuickTime" on this list, and remove them both.
    Then, download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, to clear out the remaining iTunes and QuickTime installation files off your computer (see this MS document for information on it):
    Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
    Also, use this article to manually remove the left over files from installation:
    Removing iTunes and QuickTime for Windows
    After you've done that, restart your computer.
    Then, go to this page to install the iTunes + QuickTime installation pack onto your computer again:
    Download iTunes - 7.1.1.5
    Now, restart your computer once more.
    <hr>
    Corrupt iTunes Library files:
    -- It's possible that there is some sort of corrupt file in the iTunes library, which is causing this error.
    When you are getting this error message, does it seem to occur when it hits a particular song(s) in the sync?
    Try using the technique described in this article, for help in doing this.
    If so, then try tracking down where which song that is, and then attempt to play that song in iTunes.
    If you think you've found the culprit, delete it from your iTunes library (with your iPod disconnected), and reimport it into your iTunes again.
    -- Make sure that your external hard drive is connected. If you store your iTunes library songs on an ex. hard drive, then make sure that it is connected to your computer, or else you will have files that cannot be found in your iTunes library.
    <hr>
    USB issues:
    This error could also be caused by something with your computer's USB connections with your iPod.
    -- First, try connecting your iPod to a rear port, not the front one.
    -- With your iPod disconnected, try unplugging all other USB and FireWire devices (except your keyboard and mouse).
    -- Update or reinstall your USB drivers. For instructions, see the steps in this article.
    -- Also, you could try using a different USB cord. Disconnect your current one from your computer and your iPod, and restart your computer. Now connect the new USB cord (if you have another one) to your computer, and connect your iPod.
    <hr>
    Firewall issues:
    It's possible that your firewall or antivirus software is blocking an iTunes process (like iTunesHelper.exe, for example), from running properly when your iPod is connected.
    First, let's determine what Internet security software you have.
    If you're not sure, you can go to "START > All Programs", and browse along the list for your security program.
    (Make sure to do the following with iTunes closed and your iPod disconnected.)
    Here are a couple of firewall/security programs that come to mind, that we have kbase articles (or I have the security program myself) about how to allow iTunes onto it:
    If you're using your Windows firewall, then you can use this article to enable iTunes on it:
    How to enable iTunes on Windows XP firewall
    If you're using McAfee Personal Firewall Plus, then use the instructions in this article to enable iTunes there.
    (That article above only mentions "iTunesHelper", but allow anything Apple/iPod/iTunes related on that list... not sure if that is the only one listed there, but look around anyway).
    If you're using Norton Internet Security
    If you are using something else, then usually, you launch the program, and go to some sort of section like "Settings", then go to something that says "Firewall settings", "Internet Permissions", or something similar.
    Try to find a list of applications that it "Allows/Blocks".
    Then, like normal, enable "iTunesHelper.exe", or "iTunes.exe", and "iPodService.exe" or anything else iTunes/iPod related (again, not sure if there are many things on that kind of list).
    Now, after you've enabled iTunes processes on your firewall, restart your computer. Then, check your firewall again, just to make sure that your settings haven't changed back to default, and are still allowing iTunes.
    Then, connect your iPod, and see if it syncs with iTunes or not.
    <hr>
    Let's test something...
    If that does not fix your issue, then I would also like to do a little test with how something acts on your computer for you:
    With iTunes opened and your iPod disconnected, go to Task Manager (CtrlAltDelete), and click on the "Processes" tab. Here, there ought to be these three processes listed:
    iTunes.exe, iTunesHelper.exe, and iPodService.exe.
    Carefully watch those three processes (if they are all there), and leave your Task Manager up and runnning so you can see what happens.
    Now, connect your iPod to your computer.
    Do those three processes stay in your Processes area when the iPod is connected? Or does some other strange thing occur?
    For example, do either of those applications only stay for a few seconds when your iPod is connected, then promptly disappear?
    Now that were done with the test (please describe the results of what happened in a reply), you can move onto some other possibilities:
    <hr>
    Other causes:
    There could also be other things that could cause this error.
    For example, if your computer is out-of-date with its Windows Updates, that might be a contributing factor.
    You could try enabling disk use in iTunes, then resync your iPod with iTunes, and see if the error still occurs. (for instructions on disk use, check disk use
    This could be a digital signing issue on your computer, too. See this MS document on that for details:
    Detecting digital signing issues in Windows XP
    In addition, I would suggest that you could try reinstalling your iPod's software update files.
    See this for instructions:
    What to do if iPod can't be updated because the firmware file was corrupt or not found
    For some more ideas on "other causes", you could take a look at what is mentioned in this article. (i.e., running Chkdsk on your hard drive, or keeping your computer up-to-date with its downloads).
    <hr>
    I hope one of those things solves your issue,
    -Kylene

  • IPod Shuffle Windows or Mac formatted?

    I just got an iPod shuffle (2nd generation). It wont appear in ITunes. It's not any of the obvious errors listed and the 5 steps doesn't help. I've reset it several times. When I went to run the iPod updater it claims it is a Windows formatted iPod Shuffle and that the updater is for Mac only. The packaging doesn't have any description of it being a Windows only iPod! Can it be reformatted as a Mac iPod? If I don't have iTunes open the Shuffle will load as a disk drive in the finder but not as an iPod. Can anyone help me get my Shuffle to work? Cheers.

    iPod formatted on a PC can be read by a Mac computer but not the other way round.
    So your iPod of course can be restored or formated on a Mac computer.
    I am not too sure, it can be a bad contact between the cable plug with your iPod causing the problem. Otherwise, see doing the following helps
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”

  • Cannot update or restore ipod Shuffle

    Having trouble restoring my iPod shuffle with iTunes7- it says that it cannot be restored because it contains files that are in use by another application.
    This message also appears when I try to eject the Shuffle in iTunes.
    I also noticed that of the 512Mb capacity, 91.3Mb is taken up by "other" files.
    I did the unit set up for disk use a while back but since switched back to normal use.
    Any ideas please?

    Hi there,
    I just wanna let you know what happened! By the way, I STILL extremely appreciate your info of where we can still download ITUNE 6, and ipod-updater, my friend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    For me and my PC, having itune6 back “only” was a partial solution. I went to the local apple store to meet a mac genius in person, explaning the specific situation. Thank God, she instantly got it. Anyway, I could finally mobilize my ipod-shuffle again with itune6 with PC. In the mean time, I have NO plan to going back to itune 7 again.
    What a horrible experience it was!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    I think she saved the face of Apple because I almost was READY to start a serious BOYCOTT movement using my personal connection with a nationally popular radio talk radio host, which was to seriously demonize the (greedy & corrupt?) APPLE. However, because of her sincere caring, wisdom, I will back off for a while and keep my faith in APPLE that they will work so hard to come up with better version of itune 7, hopefully has NO PROBLEM with ipod-suffle ( I noticed that ipod with larger memory have ZERO problem with itune 7) with window system.
    Thanks L @ genius bar!!!!!!

  • TS1372 can't restore ipod shuffle error 1442

    how xan i restart my ipod shuffle with unknown error occured 1442?

    I FOUND OUT HOW TO FIX IT:
    1) You need to make sure you back up your library so you can maintain your ID3 tags, ratings, and library settings. So follow the instructions located at: http://www.kadavy.net/blog/archive/2005/08/transferyouri.php
    2) Uninstall iTunes completely
    - After uninstalling, make sure that the following directories are erased:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music\iTunes
    C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Application Data\Apple
    C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Application Data\Apple Computer
    C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\My Documents\My Music\iTunes
    C:\Program Files\iTunes
    - this will ensure that all the previously installed versions of iPod firmware updates are erased.
    3) One other thing that I did, which I don't know if it helped. Was cleared my registry from previous iTunes installations, by
    a. clicking start....run
    b. typing 'regedit'
    c. searching for strings that had "iTunes" in them and removing the ones under the folder "SOFTWARE" and NOT ANY OTHERS.
    ~be advised that the registry is very crucial to Windows interface and I am not liable for any damage done due to ignorance or neglect during this step
    4) Empty Recycling Bin to get rid of everything
    5) Re-install the latest versions of iTunes available at www.apple.com
    6) Click File-->Import and then selecting your exported Library File (XML)
    this will re-import all your settings and album ratings and ID3 tags
    7) THEN VAIOLA! This fixed my error -48

  • TS1372 Any tips for "Unable to restore iPod shuffle"?

    I am trying to update an iPod Shuffle 2nd generation I haven't used in several years. I keep getting the error message saying "Unable to restore I  Pod shuffle due to errors.......(long list of choices)
    I unplugged it, repluged it, again I was asked if I wanted to update the software, I said yes, and I don't know what's happening now! This shuffle has hardly ever been  used and I want to use it now when I bicycle...Any suggestions?

    Are you connecting the USB cable to a direct USB port on the Mac (instead of a hub or spare keyboard port)?  Are you using the USB cable with a mini-dock at the iPod end (the one it came with)?

  • IPod Shuffle Windows detection problem

    Hi, I've just purchased my fist iPod product, a 512 MB iPod Shuffle... and I'm very excited about the sound quality, about iTunes... but not about the fact that it works on all computers except my home computer. I've installed iTUnes at Work and got recognized by Windows and iTUnes there, the same on a laptop, but when I tried to load it with music from home I realised it was invisible to windows. Not in My COmputer as a disk drive, not in Device Manager as an unrecognised device, not in iTunes... where is it? The operating sistem does nothing when I plug it in the USB port (I've tried all of them). I also re-installed the operating system thinking it was a Windows problem, but again, the same problem. Can you help me please?
    I've updated the player with the most recent iPod Update tool... and same problem. The motherboard from my computer is an ABIT KD7-RAID with VIA KT400 chipset. Can it be an incompatibility between the USB host from the chipset and the player? What should I do ?
    Thanks for the answer!
    PC   Windows XP Pro   Athlon XP 2000+, ABIT KD-7 RAID (Via KT400 chipset), 1GB RAM

    Your shuffle didn't happen to go through the laundry, did it?
    My wife's did and that's about when this started.

  • Cannot restore iPod shuffle after update

    I have an iPod shuffle original model. For the past few years it has played music as background to my space. Today it went silent.
    I plugged into my Powerbook and iTunes offered to update it which is probably the basis of the following problem.
    Try and try but that same file from the iTunes library will no longer go into the iPod. I tested with a second one and got the same.
    What is the problem? This is my own recording imported via Quicktime and plays on my photo iPod which I'm using instead; but it will not even copy to the iPod shuffle. But it was there for years!
    This is galling.

    I had this error as well. I re-installed the updater to get it working again.

  • Cannot restore iPod (1418) - Windows XP

    Hi, I got my Fifth Generation iPod on Christmas 2005. I never had any trouble until now. I have more than 2000 songs and I noticed my iPod started being slow (overall) when using the iPod when a song is playing. Also, I got a few songs which cuts off at approximately 3 fourth of the song, which is really annoying (doing that for about 30 songs).
    After noticing all of troubles with my iPod, I thought it was time to do a restore and start fresh. When I press the Restore button in iTunes on the iPod source, it tries to update and after 2 or 3 minutes, I get the error message:
    "The iPod could not be restored. An unknown error occured (1418)"
    After doing some research, I tried using these guides:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304508
    and
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304996
    and without any luck, I still can't get it fixed.
    Things I have done:
    1. tried to format by right clicking the device in "My Computer" and selecting Format, then, it gives me an error saying I can't format that device (Quick Format unchecked, FAT32 selected);
    2. uninstalled the USB devices; changed the USB ports; unplugged every USb devices I have running;
    3. installing the iPod Software from the cd (gives me an error saying "Service Invalid";
    4. uninstalled iTunes COMPLETELY and re-installing (now it gives me a box saying "Windows system components that iTunes requires are missing or corrupted. iTunes might be unable to launch or communicate with iPod or iPhone. For help repairing your operating system, click More Information." Now when clicking that link, it goes to this page: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305999 and again, I tried to re-register the dlls and it still won't work.)
    I really need help fixing my iPod. Thank you very much for your following help.

    Alright, I think I'm getting closer to the problem. When I open iTunes, I said it gives me a new message box saying that some programs may not work. Then, on the help page that it links, it says that I should register 10 dlls:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304996
    So, I removed all of the "/s" from the commands and it gives me feedback instead of running them, silently (/s). I noticed I'm missing 3 dlls: gpkcsp.dll, sccbase.dll, slbcsp.dll. So, I just need to fix or find those 3 and I hope it works.
    Now I need to restart my computer (just finished reformatting my iPod by using My Computer Format tool).
    Edit: nevermind, at the last 98%, it popped the error message again. Now I can't reformat. Remember: Long Formating is 99% file system checking and 1% formating (time based). Quick Formating is only format (without the file system checking).
    I'll update this thread as much as I can! Stay tuned.
    *So, I'm 90% sure it's a Windows problem and not an iTunes/iPod problem.*

  • Can't restore iPod in Windows XP

    Hey everybody,
    I just had my iPod replaced and now have a newly restored monochrome iPod c/w in front of me. It came with instructions stating that it had been formatted for Mac, and that I would need to use the updater to get it ready for my PC.
    So, despite all the crap I have heard about iTunes 5.0 I downloaded it along with the latest updater. Both installs went fine.
    According to the instructions included I was to install the updater, run it, plug in my iPod, then click RESTORE when the software detected the iPod and bolded the RESTORE button.
    All this happens just as the instructions say but after I click RESTORE a message appears saying, "Can't lock iPod. Please check if any other applications are using iPod and try again."
    Obviously I am not so stupid as to run iTunes when I do this and I don't know what else could be using my iPod...any one know how to get around this?
    P.S. The iPod is currently mounted as a removable USB mass storage device in Windows. Could this be part of the problem (is MicroCrap Windows XP Pro using my iPod in the background)?

    Not that it matters but after a couple of reboots/unplug-replug sessions I got passed that error and now it just says "Firmware update failure. Disk write error." which seems to be what everyone else is getting with the latest software from Apple...***?!?!?
