Restore Ipod without connecting to windows?

Is there anyway to restore (ie. wipe the hard drive) without connecting the ipod to windows? My computer won't see the ipod and all the links/assistance I have followed results in "connect your ipod to your computer and restore with the ipod restore software" which I can't because my computer won't see the ipod.
HELP - I'm going round in circles!
Nick

There really is no way of erasing your iPod's hard drive without connecting it your computer. However, I want to clarify one thing - if you connect your iPod to your computer, and reset it while it is connected, it should go to the Do Not Disconnect screen. If it does, open My Computer and see if there is an Apple iPod or a Removable Disk listed under "Devices with Removable Storage." If it does not go to the Do Not Disconnect screen, you may want to try playing around with different USB ports and different USB cables (there's always the chance one of those two have gone bad).
Try this, let me know what happens.
Good luck!

  • Itunes freezes when ipod is connected to windows 7

I have had to return a new ipod after spending numerous hours going through the suggested fixes on this site to cure the problem with itunes.
Itunes works fine until the ipod is connected to the computer and then it freezes itunes after a couple of seconds.
I have completely removed and re-installed itunes several times, tried disabling drivers etc along with all the other methods suggested on this site and to no avail. Even the store helpline could not get the ipod to work with the computer after an hour on the telephone and remotely accessing the computer!!!!
This seems to be a recent problem, as an older ipod worked fine until the last two versions of itunes updates were released. Since then, no joy! Even uninstalling itunes and installing an earlier version does not cure the problem. Can someone at Apple get a grip and sort out this issue, as the current itunes seems to be littered with problems? Try a search on Google and you will see what I mean. This is a major issue with thousands of people.
Apple have lost the sale of one new ipod in this instance as I could not get it to work

  • My ipad is disabled and says connect to itunes. I dont know the passcode and I dont have access to a computer , can I restore it without connecting to itunes

My ipad is disabled, I dont know the passcode and I dont have a computer to connect to itunes... is there anyway of reactivating ipad without connecting to itunes?

Sorry but no. You will need to get access to a computer with iTunes somewhere to restore the iPad. You can get help with this at an Apple Store if you have them in your area. Note that if you haven't backed up your iPad to iCloud, you'll lose all your data. Apps and other purchases from the iTunes Store can probably be re-downloaded.

  • Ipod not connecting to windows (screen on ipod only lights up)

Hi, I have been using my ipod classic perfectly for months now. All of a sudden once day it failed to connect. I have tried the 5 R's I have put it in disk mode, nothing! The computer just won't pick it up at all! It doesnt show in device manager, my computer or itunes. I thought it was my computer so I reformatted my hard drive and the problem persists. I am getting really frustrated and do not know what to do. I REALLY dont want to reset my ipod to factory settings as I will lose ALL my music, movies everything and I don't know what to do.
I am not sure if it has somehow switched to mac version, as on the support area
    - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1335
It says on the settings>about to scroll down to the bottom and if the serial number is there its mac, however I dont have scroll instead I press the middle button and at the end there are 3 items, none of which are the PC version but one is the serial code, suggesting it has maybe gone to mac?
I really REALLY apreciate any help you guys can offer me I have been slaving away for days at it and this is my last resort!

OK, first, have you checked out this Apple tech support article - iPod shows up in Windows but not in iTunes?
Second, if this is an iPod Classic, you can check its format on the third "About" screen. This screen should have three lines:
    *Serial Number*
    Model
Version (this line should display the software version and format - i.e., 1.1.2PC, where "PC" indicates that it is formatted for Windows)

  • Is it possible to restore iPod without plugging into iTunes?

Hello - having great difficulty doing anything to my iPod through iTunes. Is there anyway in which I can restore my iPod without going through iTunes?
    (iTunes already re-installed)
    Thanks

I can't imagine there being any way, unless you use some 3rd party software (which I don't recommend)

  • Ipod not connecting to windows or iTunes!

My iPod isn't being recognised by the computer, but when I disconnect it it lights up.. So it thinks somethings happening. Also, a seperate iPod works fine on a different logon to mine. My iPod is over a year old, could this be caused by the battery?

Unfortunately, there is no one ‘Silver Bullet’ answer for this issue. Many things can contribute to the problem. Here are various solutions that you can try to correct your problem. One should work.
First, make sure that the iPod is fully charged.
Try Resetting Your iPod while it's connected to the computer.
Hold down the Menu and Select buttons until you see the Apple logo (or Menu & Play/Pause in older models).
This will often get it recognized. It may take several attempts.
Try closing and re-starting iTunes. There have been cases where iTunes refuses to see an iPod, but after re-starting, it works again.
Also try re-booting the entire computer. Especially if the PC has been operating for a long time &/or many programs have been opened and closed, repeatedly.
Other USB connected peripherals may be the cause as well. Try removing all connected USB items and attaching the iPod. If you have a USB keyboard, it may be worth a try using the adapter to convert it to non-USB. If the iPod connects, continue plugging things back in until you have the problem return. You may have then isolated the issue. Sometimes it could be a printer, camera, Flash Card reader, or other attached device causing a conflict.
If your iPod shows up in Explorer under 'my computer' try changing the drive letter: Click on Start=>Control Panel=>Admin Tools=>Computer Management=>Disk Management. Right-Click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”. Choose something further along in the alphabet that is unused. Usually, “M”, “N”, “O” (or something similar).
If that doesn't work, Put Your iPod into Disk Mode then plug it in and you should be able to Restore the iPod
Your PC may have difficulty with the USB2 protocol and the iPod. See this Article for a possible solution: iPod not Recognized Correctly
Also try these hints (and the other suggestions above) from any other USB port you may have on the PC. Sometimes switching USB ports can make all the difference.

If all else fails, there have been some successes using the information in this post below. • Ipod photo connecting to windows and mac

awhile ago my sister got an 40GB ipod photo and we formatted it to windows. she left and stayed with somebody else for awhile that had a mac and was able to connect the ipod to it without reformatting it. this guy said that if she connected it to a windows pc that it would delete everything on her ipod. i want to get all of the songs off of it but i don't want to delete them all by accident. the ipod says it's still formatted to windows but i don't know how it worked with a mac. does anybody have any idea what's going on?

Just make sure you dont swop between both without making sure it set to manual update and not likned to the new computers itunes library. Otherwise it will wipe off all the old songs . There is plenty of third party software that will allow you to manage songs OFF the ipod.

Troubleshoot your USB connection. If the issue persists, out-of-date or incorrectly configured third-party security software may be causing this issue. Please follow Troubleshooting security software issues. .

  • IPod nano connection to windows

I am the new novice owner of 6th generation iPod nano and have spent the 3 days since purchased trying to set it up on my computer. iTunes was already set up on my computer (used by my granddaughter) and when I connected my iPod all music from the library transferred, I also loaded from a cd, that was the last time anything went on it. Now iPod is recognised in devises on my computer but when I open iTunes I then get the dreaded code 21 windows is uninstalling code. I have tried everything recommended and am on the verge of smashing up the iPod and the computer. Please can someone help ?

    Hi,
If the cable is not Apple's own cable but a cheap fake, it might not work.
First thing to co, check if itunes is updates to newest.
After updating to newest, then check the cable for any breaks.
If there are no breaks and still not recognizing, see if other usb ports work.
If ist still doesnt work, try resetting the nano by pressing and holding the on button and volume down button at the same time until restart.
If all fails, buy a new apple cable like the one from here:

I hope it helps because im new

  • Restore ipod without a computer?

i wont bore you but my 160gb 6g ipod needs restoring. I have tried putting it into disk mode, but my computer does not notice it is plugged in. Ive tried many cables, and discharging + fullly charging the battery. Interestingly enough, when i run HDSMARTDATA in the diagnostics menu, it says temp:min is 51C , which is surely wrong. There must be a way of restoring it to factory settings without a computer, since there must be a lot of problems that can only be solved by this.
Thanks to anyone who tries to help

try using another computer to restore it then use your own computer to sync your ipod

  • Restore iPod without losing everything?

"iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes".
    iPod: 2GB Nano 1st generation.
I would like to be able to back up everything that's on this iPod before restoring it. So far, I have found no answer to this. It seems impossible to get into the actual iPod files (either on a mac or a windows PC).
If anybody has a suggestion or could let me know whether this is actually possible, then that would be very helpful!
    Cheers.

Use a program like Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
Once you've done that, restore the iPod. Now you see why it's such a bad idea to store the only copy of music/videos/games etc on the iPod only.
