Restore issue using Time Machine when re installed the OS

I recently had problem with OS and apple told me, i need a new Hard Drive. They installed a new Hard Drive and returned my laptop with OS installed on it. They also created a user named "My name" which is not same as my prior user name. Luckily, i had all my data in Time machine.
Now, i am trying to restore the data and i am not able to. First when i tried, i went to time machine and click restore on the most recent one. It looked like it was just going fine since i didn't encounter any problem and it took around 2 hours to restore that 80 GB i had. Now the Machintosh HD size is around 90 GB but i don't see any data on my laptop. Even the applications are not there, so i got to desktop, or documents, or downloads... Nothings there, its like a new laptop but the Hard Drive size is increased as if it restored everything. Macintosh HD shows 4 folders
Library
Users
System
Applications
Each one of them is less than 1 GB so why is this taking around 100 GB of hard drive?
Also, is there a way i can restore everything i have from My time machine backup without having to do OS? I don't care if i have to format the hard drive, i guess i can't do that since the OS is installed on HD.
Any help? Its macbook air and i don't have CD ROM so i can't do OS again, i will have to go to Apple and i rather not.
I am also trying to use 'M'gration assistant' so i can migrate everything but the remaining space is only 18.8 GB and i need more than 80 GB to migrate everything. Any help is sincerely appreciated.

Unfortunately, Apple doesn't make it clear how to restore your whole system.

  • How to restore files from Time Machine after Clean Install of Mavericks

How to restore files from Time Machine after Clean Install of Mavericks. I know the data is there but seems unaccessable because I may have changed the Computer or Owner name. Is there any way to fix that now?

    Hi Linc,
my back-up data is managed by Time Machine; the actual data is on a second internal Hard Drive with a capacity of 1TB - not partitioned. I am using Time Machine and have access to all data backed up since Mavericks Clean Install but not the data prior to this date.
When I open the 1TB drive in Finder I can see a folder "Backups.backupdb/Sigi's Mac Pro/ followed by many folders of backup dates going back to 2010-09-20-103441 and up to 2014-02-07-142414 all followed with folder Macintosh HD.  February 7th  2014 was the date of the clean install.
These Backups are followed by backup date folder 2014-02-08-075554 with a subfolder of MacPro-320GB (this is the name I assigned to my Boot Drive during formatting; I suspect I should have assigned the same name as before ie. Macintosh HD) and 2014-02-11 with a subfolder Macintosh HD, these are the ones I get access to by way of Time Machine > Restore.
Weird thing is on Febr 11 when I relised my possible mistake and renamed the Bootdrive back to what it was initially ie. Macintosh HD despite this I have access to all backup data since the Clean Install in both folders MacPro-320GB as well as Macintosh HD but not to any data prior to the Clean Install.
Is there something that Time Machine knows and prevents access or is it simply a matter of renaming the subfolder 2014-02-08-07554/MacPro-320GB to ........./Macintosh HD?
I like to restore selectively and not everything - It was hard work reinstalling apps that were supposed to be the troublemakers (ref my discussion on Maverick problems) but I now need to get onto data specific to some of these apps as well as other data I may have missed. Long story? Yes and sorry.

  • Do I need to pause Time machine when I install Aperture 3 ?

do I need to pause Time machine when I install Aperture 3 ?

If I had to anticipate when TM was about to run and then quit Aperture I'd really be disinclined to use it.
Not always, but you have to give TimeMachine a chance to make at least once a full backup. If Aperture or iPhoto are open, when Time Machine is running, you will only get incremental backups. I cannot find the corresponding Aperture document right now, but see this:
iPhoto '11: Back up your iPhoto library
Important:   Time Machine can’t do a full backup of your iPhoto library when iPhoto is open. To ensure that Time Machine does a complete backup of your library, quit iPhoto periodically before backing up.
To restore photos, quit iPhoto, open the folder containing your iPhoto library, and then open Time Machine.
I noticed recently, that TM had never made a full backup of one of my Aperture libraries and was a bit scared, because I am relying heavily on TM. So I try to remember to quit Aperture before connecting my backup drive. It is not dramatic, if I do not do it everytime, but I make sure, I get a full backup of each library at least once, after I created it.
Early versions of TM had a problem where if Aperture was running and TM did its backup there was a chance the whole library would be backed up rather then just the changes but I thought this was fixed in later versions of TM and/or Aperture.
You are referring to this, right?
Mac OS X v10.5, 10.5.1, 10.5.2: Time Machine may back up the entire Aperture Library each time
In Mac OS X v10.5 through 10.5.2, Time Machine may perform a full backup (rather than incremental) of the Aperture Library, resulting in heavier-than-expected disk usage for Time Machine backups.
This can happen if the Aperture library is included in Time Machine backups and a backup occurs while Aperture is running.  In this situation, Time Machine excludes the Aperture library from a backup while the application is running, but backs up the entire library once Aperture quits, rather than just the changes since the previous backup.
    Resolution
Download and install Mac OS X v10.5.3 or later. Afterwards, when you use Time Machine it will perform incremental backups as expected.

  • Restoring itunes using time machine

    Hi everyone,
I'm not hugely computer literate so please be gentle.
I managed to delete my ENTIRE itunes folder... apps, music, playlists, etc. Is it possible to restore itunes exactly as it was? I have a time machine back up from yesterday that would work.
So far I've managed to use TM to get all the music, apps and video back so I'm not stressed but it was basic and messy and not as organised as itunes was before I deleted everything.
So can you help? Can I restore itunes using time machine or not?

Hi, im actually in the same boat here, im in the process of re installing my OS and i want to restore Iphoto and itunes as it was. So correct me if im wrong, all i have to do is on my Mac go to this folder (<MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music )and than jump into time machine ? That would take me directly to the folder i have in view on my mac ? Once i hit restore, will this restore all my apps, songs, iphone and ipod back ups etc ? Thanks for your help all.
    Probably not.
How and why are you reinstalling OSX?
Assuming you erased your internal HD before installing OSX, your best bet is to use +Setup Assistant+ when it reboots to transfer your apps, users, and data from your backups. See #19 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If you don't do that, but set up a user account instead, that account probably won't be recognized as the same one on your backups, so you won't have permission to restore from them.

  • Kernel Panic, Restored System Using Time Machine but Problems Still  Persis

SOS! Please, please, please help. I'm at a loss here. I have an 300 GB iMac with a 32 GB partition for Windows. I backup to an Iomega UltraMax 500 GB external hard drive. Let me know if more info is needed. I went through the checklists to resolve a kernel panic, and nothing has been working. Here's the background:
I recently encountered a kernel panic (I saw the screen discussed in the "What is a kernel panic?" article). It started when Firefox 3.2 beta was running. It froze and eventually the system froze. I repaired disk permissions, and I was able to boot up, but it took awhile to boot up. Some things weren't right once it was booted; I lost some keyboard functionality, system settings (screen saver, display settings, etc), etc. I attempted to repair the disk (using disk utility while booted from leopard install disc), but it failed (generated an error, said it couldn't repair disk). So I did the next thing and restored the system from Time Machine. Things seemed to be alright.
And about a couple days later, Time Machine starting encountering errors and failed to backup (it failed while attempting to backup 300 MB). The system also started to get slower, and it eventually froze. So I restored again from Time Machine. Seemed to be alright, but again it eventually slowed and started freezing.
I can't retrieve the panic log. I think it was erased with one of my system restores. I went into Time Machine to look for it, and it's nowhere to be found.
So, I tried to repair my disk permissions. That succeeded. But the disk repair failed again. I restored again from Time Machine. Same thing: things seem okay, but Time Machine isn't able to back-up (it's pretty much non-responsive, even after I told it to stop, it just says "stopping"), things are a bit slow and some applications are unstable (Firefox crashed for no apparent reason). I just found this under /Library/Logs/Crash Reporter:

Windows XP ran fine from my other partition at this point. I'm wondering if my Windows partition has something to do with it (I chose FAT32 instead of NTFS file system)?
Please help. Will erasing the drive, reinstalling from the leopard disc (10.5.4), and restoring select applications/folders/files help, instead of from a system restore from Time Machine?
    Your help is immensely appreciated!

    Thanks for responding.
So under the partition tab, I should reformat to one partition, reinstall Leopard, and see what happens from there? Selectively restore applications, music, pictures to my system once it's reinstalled and properly updated? Anything else I may need to do or restore?
Why not reformat under the erase tab, zero out the disk, and reinstall? Any difference?
Just a little worried and unsure is all. If it's a hardware thing, I can accept that and take it in to be serviced. But, if it is a software issue, I don't want to do any irreparable harm during the erase-and-reinstall process. Just want to make sure I get it right.

  • Restore files from time machine after new install

In my office one of my iMac's suffered a complete system crash.  I am reinstalling OS X Lion as I write this post.  The iMac was backed up to an external hard drive using time machine.  After the new install of Lion how do I grab my user files from the machine backup?
I appreciate in advance your help.

When you complete the installation and boot into the Setup Assistant use the opportunity to restore from a TM backup which will appear in the Assistant. Just have the backup drive connected. You can then restore from the most recent backups of your Home folder, third-party applications and support files, and system preferences.
Restore will take a while, but when done just restart.

  • Restore calendar using Time Machine in Mavericks?

I lost my calendar information due to a mistake I made after upgrading to Mavericks. But, I've been using Time Machine for a long time. So, is there a way to restore my calender using Time Machine? All the instructions I found were Snow Leopard or Lion specific and didn't help at all. Thanks in advance!

After searching around a bit, I believe this will resolve my issue:
If a specific calendar, go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Calendars. Enter Time Machine and restore.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

Could not restore Photoshop CS5 using Time Machine after changing to Mac OS8.3 - the change was dictated by a power supply problem (now fixed) in my Macbook Pro - that has been fixed.

Restoring the Adobe application via Time machine is not a good practise and may cause other issues as well.

Backed up my entire computer on a Buffalo Ministation as I need to install new OSX and don't want to lose any files.  Tried the handful of options listed in Support to restore and nothing is working.  Using Time Machine, the Restore button is greyed out so I can't select it.  Using Disk Utility, when adding the source image, the Open button is greyed out so I can't select it.  Please help.

  • Can't restore mac using time machine

I've been having an issue where my mbp will restart suddenly. I tried downgrading to mavericks, but it didn't fix the issue. Before I did I used time machine backed up to an external drive. Now, I'm trying to restore my mac, but it's not letting me restore it past today. What can I do?

If this is not enough information then I will answer any questions about this problem I can.

  • When backing up using the G Drive on using time machine my wife drops the icon into the trash icon on the loading dock.  I told her this was not correct.  Who is right?  Thanks in Advance.

    Folks,
I found my wife dropping the icon of her backup file into the trash icon on the dock.  She had just completed using Time machine and when to uninstall the Gdrive.  I told her this was an erroneous practice.  She disagreed.  Who is right?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Restored system from Time Machine backup disk but the system could not start-up

On MacBook Pro early 2008, restored the entire system from Time Machine backup disk to the entire disk.
The previous system on the backup disk had FileVault turned on.
The restore completed successfully and I was prompted to restart the system via the new restored system disk.
I heard the normal start-up sound, then the Apple logo, but it stuck at the logo screen. And the cooling fan run at almost full speed?
I have been waiting for a few hours, guessing it might FileVault the disk.
Finally I have to shutdown the machine as it stuck at the logo screen forever.
Anyone has the same issue? Any ideas?

BTW, I also tried Repair the system disk, Fix permissions via Disk Utility.
I guess I must lose some files either during the backup or the restore.
