Restore iTunes library... folder comes, but files don't.

So, I've recently had some mac issues where I've had to create two new user accounts and got rid of my old one. However, these are all on the same computer, which means that I have three different user accounts on my time machine backups.
First, I was wondering what would happen if I created one more user account with the original name? I heard somewhere that this would screw things up as far as restoring from time machine. Is that true? If not, then I would love to have the original user account name back and be able to get rid of the other two I created (I only created them because I had to build a new account from scratch twice and heard that using the same name makes things screwy).
Second, I have restored my original iTunes library from my first account to my second account. However, when using the same iTunes library backup from Time Machine to try and restore it to the newest third account, it will not transfer all of the files... only the iTunes folder. Any ideas?
Third, when I am restoring from a separate user account to my new one via time machine, i get three options: (1) cancel, (2) locate folder for restoring, and (3) recreate folders, yadda yadda (i'm sure whoever is going to help me with this knows exactly what I am talking about). Which is preferential? I think that I have been using locate folder on my own, and I place things where I know they should go. Say I want to restore an iPhoto library from one user account to the one I am currently using. Which is best? Clearly cancel is not an option . So do I locate the folder myself, or do I let the machine do the recreating?
Thanks.

you won't have trouble restoring but you'll have trouble with the restored items afterward because the UID of the new account will be different from the old one so you won't have permissions to the items you restore in the home directory and you'll have to enter your admin password every time you need to restore. you can change the UID of the new user you create to match the UID of the old one but it will require some terminal work. also, you'll need to find out what the old UID was. by default the first user created on the computer has UID=501, the next, UID=502 and so on.
I can explain further if you want.

please describe the exact steps you are using. where was the old itunes library located? in the Music folder of the deleted user? how are you getting access to that folder from the new account?

in this situation it would be (2). it will let you restore to the location of your choice. option (3) would restore to the original location of those items in the now deleted home directory of the old user. it would have to recreate the full path to the itunes folder to do it hence the message.

How should I go about restoring my iTunes files from a backup?
I used to keep all of my iTunes media files (i.e., music, video, etc) on an external hard drive, using the Preferences:Advanced:iTunes Music Folder Location setting. My external hard drive has completely died (sidenote: never trust LaCie!), but thankfully, I made a backup by copying the directory tree onto a second drive. The second drive is now attached, but, of course, my songs still generate "file not found" errors. I have way too many songs to manually find each one... but I don't want to lose playlist and playcount information...
How should I go about mass "re-linking" the files on the backup disk to my iTunes database, so that I can then change my library location and "consolidate" all the files onto my internal hard drive?
Has anyone done this successfully? I'd appreciate some guidance!
    Thanks!

In case anyone has the same problem, here was the best fix I found:
Basically, you copy the files into the directories where iTunes is looking for them:
    1. Pick a few grayed-out songs in iTunes and open the song properties. Look for the song filename, paying particular attention. After a few, you should see a pattern, indicating where iTunes is looking for the files based on the song/artist/album name.
    2. Just copy the backed-up files to the locations where iTunes is expecting to find them. With luck (and particularly if your backup was recent), the pattern should be the same as the pattern in your backup, so you'll probably just have to drag files only once.
    3. Now double-click on a grayed-out song (that has had its file moved into the folder where iTunes is looking for it) and it should start playing and stop being grayed out.
    Hope this helps someone else!

  • Restored iTunes Library from backup, but Missing Artwork

    Hello
I had to reinstall iTunes 8. Fortunately, I had a clone of my HDD from just the day before. After the iTunes reinstallation, I replaced the iTunes Library and iTunes Music Library.xml files with my back up versions. Once I opened iTunes it took its time rebuilding the Library with the result being my ratings, play counts, and lyrics all where they were supposed to be. I am happy!
However, while that metadata was good, I noticed that I was missing artwork for a lot of the music files. It so happens that artwork was present in the iTunes Store purchased music, and in the files that had the artwork embedded via drag and drop (i.e., art was part of actual song file). On the other hand, every file that originally had images via Get Album Artwork was not referencing the Album Artwork folder (i.e., art not part of actual song file but referenced .itc files). So, no artwork.
How do I get that artwork back? All the images are still in the Album Artwork folder, restored from my backup, but I cannot find a way to make itunes reference them again! Why does the Library.xml restore all the iTunes-specific information for a track except the artwork?
Why do I not just use the Get Album Artwork feature again, you may be thinking? Because for most of the songs iTunes had the ID3 tag info wrong. After importing the music and matching the track names to iTunes Store to grab the artwork, I modified the ID3 info to more correctly reflect the artist, album, and track names. To rename the files to match iTunes Store, and then name them back to how I like them will take days.
So.. am I out of luck? Is there a way to actually backup iTunes information so that songs keep their references to the .itc files in the Album Artwork folder?
I thank you for your time reading this.
    cheers!

I've been restoring my iTunes folder from a backup hard drive to a new computer on which I've downloaded the latest iTunes (10.7). If this is a newer version than the one I backed up with could this be the problem? (I had the latest (to my knowledge) iTunes when I backed up the folder about 3 weeks ago, was this version 10.7?)
Or is the version of iTunes (within recent updates) not an issue when restoring a library?
    Using Windows 7.
    Any help please?

From the top of the page where the scripts live...
The general method of use is to download the script to a folder of your choice, e.g. your Desktop, Downloads folder or create a folder at ...\iTunes\Scripts. Select a playlist or highlight some tracks in iTunes and then double-click on the script to execute it. If no specific tracks are selected the script will try to work with all tracks in the current playlist. Some scripts offer a choice of track by track confirmation of changes or fully automatic processing of the selection. Many of the scripts can optionally display a progress bar while running.
You are strongly advised to backup your entire library, or at the very least the iTunes Library.itl file, before use. Test the behaviour of your chosen script on a small group of files first to make sure it does what you want before applying it to large numbers of files.
Most builds of Windows will execute *.vbs scripts when you double-click them. If that doesn't happen then you might need to visit the Add/Remove Programs or Programs & Features control panel to enable the Windows Scripting Host. I can track down details if you have issues.
Backing up and restoring data is an area that is often glossed over. Most people don't try to learn much about it until they've lost something important. (Me too )
If your iTunes library was in the usual layout then normally copying the whole iTunes folder from the User's Music folder in the old computer to the User's Music folder in the new one will usually work fine. Ideally this is done before iTunes is installed so that there is no empty library to replace, and all settings are picked up from the old library. This post contains more details.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • How do I restore iTunes library from Backup files on External Hard Drive?

How do I restore iTunes library from Backup files on External Hard Drive and keep the new iTunes library on the External Hard Drive. I have all the media and playlist and .xml .itl files, just want the iTunes to recognise the content.
I backedup my iTunes content by dragging to External Hard Drive. Formatted and reinstalled OS. My iTunes content is so large, that I wish for the Library and content to remain on the External Hard Drive. I have all the music files and playlists, I just cannot get the iTunes application to display all the content. Hoping to Not have to drag and drop all the content to be recopied into new iTunes organised files.
Troubleshooting this by researching other conversations on the web, I have come stuck for a solution. One Troubleshoot told me to hold down the Command key and then lauch iTunes and a dialogue box will appear to Choose a new library, however when I try this, no Dialogue box appear to give me the option!?

It sometimes has that funny switch symbol on it too.

  • Permissions error when restoring itunes library from old hdd's TM backup to new SSD OS X Music folder...

    Hello,
I got my self a new SSD and installed Lion in it from the internet. I tried copy pasting the itunes library from the most current backup in the TM drive that was used to backup the old hdd. I keep on getting "not enough permission" error for every single file. This same happens when I restore using Time Machine by navigating to the foler using the option "Browse Other Backup Disks"
Note: There is no encryption problem here AFAIK cause i never used encryption on any of my drives.
Please help me restore iTunes library and iPhoto library form the backup. Thanks.

    Don't copy & paste.
Just use TM to restore it.

  • Quick way to remove duplicate files in iTunes Library folder?

I "consolidated my iTunes Library", which caused iTunes to place duplicate mp3/mp4 files in my iTunes library folder (I assume it copied them all over from my backup drive) which has doubled the size of my iTunes Library folder.
Keep in mind, that iTunes actually shows only one copy of each song/video within the app. It's only that the actual files have been doubled on my hard drive. iTunes is only using half of those files.
Is there a way to quickly identify and delete the duplicated files on my hard drive that aren't being used by iTunes?

This information from Doug should help you decide what you can use.

  • Restoring iTunes library after hard drive crash

The hard drive on my Macbook pro (mid-2009) crashed. I took it to the genius bar for a diagnostic. The drive was physically fine so they wiped it and reinstalled Mavericks, which is now running 10.9.4. I am restoring user files from Time Machine individually to keep things clean. Hooray!
I'm now running iTunes 10.3.1. Years ago, I placed the iTunes library in Users>Shared on the hard drive, so my wife could access the files when she logged in. We don't need to do that now, so today I dragged all the music files from Time Machine to the "Music" section on the iTunes window.
They seem to have installed and indexed fine, but I lost some of the original data--like date added and numbers of plays--which would be nice to have. (Then all now read as installed today with zero plays.) My playlists are all gone as well; I'd like to have them back.
Is there any way to restore the music so those things stay intact, by basically making my library the way it was?
I considered dragging the entire set of folders over from the Shared section of Time Machine, but was afraid the music would not index, and the folder structure and nomenclature was different (for example, it had iTunes Music instead of iTunes media and there were a couple other anomalies). I imagine this is because the Shared library was set up under a different version of iTunes.
I hope this doesn't further complicate things but my user name was changed at the genius bar (from what it was prior to crash); they added my last name to my user name. I didn't notice till I got home. So far I have had no trouble accessing the files I have dragged in (Numbers, Word, etc), but don't know if the permissions on the music files might be affected.
    All help greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Finding you iTunes Library folder (via "Go" menu)

I had a heck of a time finding the answer to this so I thought I put it on the Apple site to help others.  For whatever reason if you need to find your iTunes Library folder, here's the article that helped me, in particular since under the latest OS (as of this date OS X Mavericks) you don't see "Go" menu for the Finder.  You simply need to press Shift+Cmd+G to get the Go to window, and then type /Library.  Tada!  Here's the entire article for more: http://www.macworld.com/article/161156/2011/07/view_library_folder_in_lion.html

Those TMP files point to a software conflict between itunes and some other program on your PC.
It could be security software like Norton, itunes plug-ins like lastfm, other media management software like Sony or Zune, speed-up-your PC kind of software like UniBlue, who knows what you have on your PC? ..... besides you.
Anyway, what is happening, is itunes closes and saves the ITL and XML files, and it makes a TMP file while doing so. When itunes finishes it tries to clean up and delete the TMP file, but something is not letting it.
You can try using MSCONFIG or SysInternal's FileMon to find what is causing this. Those methods are for advanced PC users, so post back if you want more info.
I see you are on itunes v6. If you had at least v7, you could just move your ITL file to another folder and fake the other software out. That is an easy workaround for new PC users, but it won't work with itunes v6.
With itunes 7 and later, you can press and HOLD the shift key to select a different itunes library:

  • External hard drives, media folders and iTunes Library folder

    Hello All,
I have an external hard drive with all of my iTunes media files and am wondering if I should also have the iTunes Library folder and related iTunes files on this same drive. Is this the preferred arrangement? It seems that backups would be greatly simplified.
If it is a preferred solution that all these files reside on one drive location, how do I set these files to the external drive?
Thanks in advance for any assistance?

no, i back up my iTunes folder (which is devoid of media content as my music files etc. are on the external).
the +apple of my eye+ is the +*iTunes library file+*
which is the heart (database) of the iTunes library (which is the whole thing: media files, support files, artwork folder)
while your media files are on an external drive which you mirror to a second drive.
    exactly.
Do you use Chronosync to mirror your externals?
    yes.
    Have you consider a NAS?
well, i have a test library on an external USB drive hanging off my TC. it's not a NAS exactly but pretty similar.
i found that a firewire 800 external HD @ 7200 rpm provides superior speed to any networked library which is important (to me) if you e.g. stream HD movies to an TV and don't want to experience a lot of buffering.

  • Time machine restore iTunes library

I need some help getting through what should be an easy operation:
Although I can see a number of backup files for iTunes via TM; when highlighted I can't make those (or any file for that matter) light up the "Restore" button. Because of that I'm unable to proceed with this or any backup operation.
I feel very stupid in this as TM is supposed to be, and would appear to be, very easy. So I surmise that I must be doing something really dumb. Any ideas/directions for me?
Also would it be the .itl or the .xml file that conatins the backup I need to retore the library?

    iTunes v10.6.3 64 bit

Chris: I had a question for you b/c you seem knowledgable about this.
The HD on my older Macbook Pro has failed but I have my iTunes library and sound files backed up on Time Machine.
Ordinarily, I would use Migration Assistant to restore everything from Time Machine BUT my new laptop has a smaller HD (by about 160GB or so) and that means, when I run the Migration program, I'll likely have to tell it to avoid restoring my sound files (since those take up about 200GB).
It's possible that after setting up my new laptop, I can then clear enough space to be able to then restore iTunes and the soundfiles but I've never tried this before. What's essential is that I don't lose my playlists and playlist folders.
Can I pull this off somehow?
For example, could I run Migration Assistant again but only for iTunes-related files?
Or is there another way to restore iTunes from TM in such a way to preserve all my playlists and playlist folders?
    thanks!

  • Restoring iTunes Library from Time Machine

I messed up my iTunes library when I attempted to move it to the Shared folder so that my wife could access my music on her account. Now when I load up iTunes, none of my media (songs, videos, podcasts) are there. I tried to restore from Time Machine (I restored the Music/iTunes) folder, but I still have nothing in iTunes. All my music, etc. is in the right folders, etc. -- nothing's been moved -- but it doesn't show up in iTunes. I could just add everything back and start from scratch, but I'd really like to recover my playlists, ratings, etc.
What do I need to do to do this? I must be missing something?

Try holding down the option key while opening iTunes. Select the option to choose a library. Inside the Music/iTunes folder there should've been a database file called iTunes Library. Select this file to use.

  • ITunes moving songs to wrong iTunes Library Folder

    Hi All,
Just upgraded to 10.1. I have my iTunes library on an external drive. Upon upgrade to 10.1 iTunes created a new iTunes Library Folder on my internal drive (/iTunes Library/Music) and moved 103 of my 8000 songs into that new folder. I've never had or needed that folder before. I have iTunes set to both manage my library and copy songs to my iTunes music folder (correctly points to the external drive in iTunes). So every time I try to add these 103 songs to iTunes, they do not get copied to my external drive library folder, they get re-copied into the internal disk folder that iTunes creates and iTunes will not play them (get the exclamation point). Even if I try to trash the internal iTunes Library folder, iTunes just automatically recreates it and adds those same 103 songs back in. If I copy/paste the songs into the external library and add them to iTunes - iTunes moves them back to the internal drive and will not play them! Some of the songs are purchased from iTunes, some are not. Only 1 song is DRM protected and some but not all songs are iTunes plus upgraded songs.
Anyone have any idea why iTunes might be behaving this way only with those 103 songs?
    Thanks!
