Restore loop...

Hi all, i bought a 3GS spares or repairs off ebay as i could not afford a working one, it is stuck in the restore loop, i cannot get itunes to recognise it right.
I have spent the last few days trying to sort it out, i have tried;
Hard reset
DFU mode
tried diffrent ways of doing it, i do not know if it has been jailbroken in the past or not.
What options do i have? i cant afford to pay for repairs from apple, so i could do with a fix that i can do myself.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks

Heres an update, i managed to get iRecovery working using windows xp (i dont have access to a mac) and i keep getting something about gas empty or something like that (i dont have it up as i had to restart)
I quickly googled it and found out that it could possibly be something to do with the battery? when i goto itunes and do a restore there i get error 40.
putting 2 and 2 together i am guessing that it IS a hardware failure...
first thought is the battery, but would that cause this? the phone does seem to have a problem with power unless its something to stop restore mode being kep on the phone for hours.
Thanks

  • Can't break out of the restore loop on my iPod Touch.

I've tried different USB ports, different USB cables, verified and repaired my permissions, and I have no third party security that I know. I unfortunatly do not have a diffrent computer to try. I'm guessing that is the answer I will get. But if anyone has some advice, I would love to hear it.

    Maybe:
Restore loop (being prompted to restore again after a restore successfully completes)
Troubleshoot your USB connection. If the issue persists, out-of-date or incorrectly configured third-party security software may be causing this issue. Please follow Troubleshooting security software issues. .

  • Can't sync iPod and stuck in restore loop after upgrading to iTunes 7

I cannot restore my iPod using my desktop, so I use my laptop to do it and it seems to work and I can transfer music to it, but when I reconnect it to my desktop, it tries to erase and resync with the other iTunes library. It seems to go through and I can see the status of all the songs being copied to the iPod, but when I then disconnect to see if it happened, it shows no songs. When I reconnect it to either the laptop or the desktop, it tells me to restore it. Only the laptop will restore, the desktop gets in the restore loop. I tried the selective startup, the drive letter change, the reinstall of iTunes, nothing works. Can anyone tell me if this is an iPod error or a software problem?

Try the following. I expect you will have to let the battery fully drain.
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • My ipod nano 7th generation is stuck in a restore loop with a white screen. Now it won't turn on anymore. What to do?

My new Ipod Nano 7th generation is stuck in a restore loop. Here is what happened: I added music to it using the latest version of iTunes, the colored bar at the bottom of the summary tab in iTunes showed my that I added it and I disconnected it to listen to the music. As I turned it on, it told me that there is neither music nor pictures on it. So I connected it again to my computer and iTunes told me that I had to restore. Which I did following all the steps but it keep telling me that I need to restore it. After three times of restore it, I disconnected it from my PC and turned it off. Now it won't turn on anymore - even though the battery is fully charged - and when I connect it to iTunes, iTunes tell me "The iPod software updater could not be contacted. The server does not support this version of iTunes." Well, I just downloaded the newest version a couple of minutes ago from the apple website. My iPod stays black. What shall I do?

    Hi clarity,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
You may want to first try removing and reinstalling the latest version of iTunes by following the steps in this article:

  • IPAD 2 is wiped and in endless restore loop with 5.1

I downloaded and installed iOS5.1 about 7 hours ago after being prompted on both my iPad2 and iPhone4S via WIFI. No problem with the iPhone, works great. However, when the iPad rebooted it told me I needed to restore the device, which I attempted to do so over a dozen times on two differnet PC's (office and home) and each time I get an error "The iPad "iPad" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1)." I have checked many forunm and sites for help. I tried everything that Apple and other posts suggested but no luck at all in the endless restore loop.
I am really shocked that Apple would release this IOS 5.1 disaster out with any real help or guidance. The worse part is the erasure of all data on the device, including the device name. The ITunes window can't even identify the capacity or serial number. What a cluster.

In case anyone was wondering how this was resolved, I had to ring Apple Support. Secondly, this problem was compounded by the fact that I only backed up to the Cloud, not my PC. Stupidly, on my iPad after it lost all it's data, I clicked on 'sync to the Cloud', which overwrote my good backup.
I had to set my iPad in iTunes up as a new iPad, and move everything back over. From now on I am only going to sync to the PC.

  • How do I get out of this "Restore-loop"?

I recently tried to restore my iPod touch 2g to it's original settings by deleting everything. But I hit the restore button on the iPod itself instead of doing it through iTunes. Now it's in a "restore-loop" so to speak and won't turn on.  I can  put it into DFU mode but that doesn't change anything. It just goes back to the loop of turning on after that whenever i press a button. The main problem is I can't connect it to iTunes. It's not recognized by iTunes or my computer. What can I do to get out of this loop? Is there anything I can do myself or do I need to take it to an Apple store? If anyone has had the same problem or knows how to deal with this, I'd appreciate getting some suggestions as to how I can fix my iPod.

    Follow the instructions here.

  • Infinite restore loop AND disk utility lists HD size as 500GB

So, after reading everyone else's problem with the restore loop i have another kink to add to the mix. I am running software 1.2.1 in itunes 7.5 on a 5th gen 30GB ipod on a MacBook, and it is stuck in the restore loop. When I attempt to restore via iTunes, it says that iTunes can not restore the ipod becase it is busy. I have tried rewriting the disk via the Disk Utility but the DU lists the size of th disk as over 500GB. I had the iPod playing music and acting normal earlier this afternoon, this whole debacle started when i connected it to my computer for the first time in a few months to update the software. Any and all help would be appreciated.
I have tried alot of the other solutions listed elsewhere...but as far as i can find no one as had the wrong listed HD size problem.

Thanks for a quick reply <baltwo>. You’ve answered that it is not a fake message!
fyi: I thought that I would use my external Buffalo for two purposes; namely the smaller ExFAT partition for copying stuff to my win7 netbook. The larger partition was to be used as my imac image of SL. So this was my first attempt at using disk utility - the idea being to hold an image backup at another location. Plus I now have the Lion thumbdrive ready to upgrade from SL and so being cautious wanted to have a SL image backup
Anyway I followed the apple instructions using my mac 10.6.3 install DVD but it would appear from other discussions that <unable to scan (internal error)> is not unique to me.
I’ll get back to apple telephone support for further advice.
I would though be grateful for an “idiots’ guide to making an image backup of my internal HD that runs SL 10.6.8
eg should I have just one partition on the external USB drive? format it as Mac OS extended? create the image as compressed or read/write? Basically I’ll do whatever will work!!
    thanks again

  • IPod Nano in restore loop

When connecting the iPod nano my laptop, iTunes states the nano is in need of a restore. Ok, I thought, I'll restore it then reload my music, I've succesfully did this before. I proceed with the restore but when it shows back up in iTunes listing, it again asks for a restore. From this point forward, it is in a restore loop. I take this nano to a friends Mac G5 and no problem, loads, re-syncs, works great. Bring it back to my laptop and same problem. Tried another Windows XP PC in my house and it too, works great, loads songs, re-syncs, works fine. I think I have an iTunes database error within this particular Laptop. Removed iTunes and ran a registry cleaner twice but that did not help. Any suggestions???

Reformat the iPod drive through the computer management within administrative tools in the Control Panel. When doing it select FAT for the format, not FAT32. Its the only way I fixed mine after every other attempt (i.e. drive letter change, reinstalled iTunes, format the drive by right clicking on drive, etc.)

  • IPhone 3g 16gb recovery/restore loop

2 recent iPhone 4s working ok since day 1. I (Dad) inherit 2yr old (out of warranty) iPhone 3g 16gb. Recently the phone went into the WSOD, Apple Logo, Recovery, Restore loop (was connected to car audio). Phone has not had any other problems since day one. Not jailbroken or unlocked. Rogers sim inside no longer active (iPod & Wifi usage).
Research week & tried every suggestion to do a phone restore/upgrade in order to get it out of the "Recovery Mode" loop (3 hours per day x 7).
    Here is my list:
    Full Battery - charges ok
    Firewall - turned off
    Disabled AV
    Reinstall iTunes (recent & old)
    # software suggestions to Enter & Exit Loop
Different PC - 5, USB ports, direct, USB Cables (Apple old & new)
    Different modes - DFU, Emergency
    Nothing else running on PC
PC makes noise when connects & disconnects
"Dock Connector" replaced - error 9 suggestion - no difference (old dock ok)
PC recognizes iPhone - assume usb drivers ok - Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode) USB Driver - no errors
During the restore process, consistently error 9 s out within seconds of (Apple Logo above empty bar) "Waiting for iPhone"
Suggestions & Help is always appreciated, perhaps this list will help someone else with the similar journey. Hard not to think that this is a software/firmware issue (But then always careful with sure bet advice!).

Tx x 2 I did read the information from Apple that you just posted. Note in my original post I do discuss trying all these combinations and permutations w.r.t. USB isolation/variation (only thing I have not tried is an OS other than Win 7 (XP or Vista) or via a MAC) - even having the dock connector replaced.
I have not gone to the Apple Store (and have no intent on doing so) and yes it is possible the phone is defective - would boil down to the logic board imho. The phone is out of warranty (again as stated above 2+ years old). This translates into swapping the device or paying for consulting time - given the resale market does not make economic sense imho.
The original intent of posting in this forum is that I have the sense a number of hardware ok iPhones (perhaps including mine) appear to be having firmware/software issues - reproduceable error 9 - the device connects and disconnects from the pc up until the "Waiting for iPhone"

  • How i saved my ipod from the itunes restore loop

this is a success story, i hope it will help others to save their ipods too. my ipod is a black 30gb 5g (late 2006) whereas my system is leopard 10.5.4 and itunes 8.0.2. but i'm sure it will also work with another ipod, mac os x and itunes version.
    *what happend:*
my ipod fell on the floor from about one meter height. it was not the first time that's why i didn't really worried about any damage. but this time it was different.
    *the symptoms:*
my ipod showed a white screen with the text "Connect to your Computer. Use iTunes to restore.". i connected it to my mac, the ipod mounted on the desktop with a generic white harddisk icon. then i started the restore process inside itunes. after about a minute the ipod restarted and instead of showing me an installing-progress-bar the ipod showed me the same white sceen again. after the fourth or fith restore i realized that i was cought in the itunes restore loop.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1441?viewlocale=en_US
    *the solution:*
i searched the internet and came across a lot of articles that described the same problem as mine but none solved it. then i stumbled over a very useful post in the forums. it proposes a lot of solutions. maybe it is useful to read it before you continue with my post: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4531234
+note: the following procedure will delete all the data on your ipod.+
    1. connect your ipod to your mac. wait until it is mounted on the desktop. if the ipod isn't mounted put it in disk mode: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363
    2. ignore any message from itunes and open the "Disk Utility" application inside your "Utilities" of the "Appplications" folder.
    3. choose your ipod in the sidebar. switch to the tab erase.
    4. choose "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as volume format. leave the other options as is.
    5. click on the "Security Options …" button. in the sheet choose "Zero Out Data" and click on "OK".
    6. click on the "Erase …" button and wait for about two hours. it will take longer on a bigger harddisk.
    7. the earse will end with an error message telling you something about invalid data. ignore it. this is because the harddisk can't be partitioned without the correct drivers form the firmware.
    8. eject your ipod and reconnect it to your mac. itunes should now start with a message "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes". click on "Restore" and wait.
    9. after a moment the ipod should restart and an installation progress bar will appear. do not disconnect the ipod and wait until the install is complete.
    10. the ipod will restart and now you should get back your normal ipod interface. congratulations, you saved your ipod!
if the described procedure didn't solve your problem you can put your ipod in diagnostic mode to see where the problem may be. for this you need a wall power supply or a fully loaded ipod: http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/index.shtml/

    Hi,
Can you tell me if you do this will I lose the TV shows that I have purchased and downloaded on ITunes 7.0. I am having serious problems installing CD's. Everytime I open the new version and install a CD, my computer keeps restarting and then says there was a serious error to my computer. Sometimes, it mentions DVD 43, and sometime it mentions a video device driver, my this is a new computer not even two months old. I have the old version still installed on my laptop and was wondering about moving it over to the main PC, but would hate to lose my purchases.

My iPod touch 4g is stuck in a restore loop and I dont know why! Its jailbroken and i got fed up of it so i decided to restore it. It didnt work. It came up with error 21 and then i tried to restore it in dfu mode and it came up with error 1600. I took it into the apple store and they said they would have to make an appointment to try it... I dont really want to do that becuase i cant live without it!

My iPod is 4 years old by the way

If somone out there could be an absolute star and help me with it i would be insanely grateful!

    You can try 2 things:
Restart your iPod by - Holding the Power and Home buttons until you see the Apple logo.
Put your iPod in DFU and restore - Hold the Power and Home until the screen goes black, wait about 2 seconds, release the power button but keep holding the home for 15 seconds, then on iTunes, Restore and Update.

  • Stuck in Restore Loop after 3.1 Upgrade

Can anybody help? My iPhone is now stuck in a constant restore loop and I cannot downgrade to 3.0.1. My iPhone is effectively now a brick.
This issue has really got me seething at Apple. Do they not test these things?

Just tried to update to 3.1, should have read the forum first. Had I seen the problems everyones been having I never would have tried it. When the update was finishing the iphone disconnected from itunes then the screen showed that I need to connect iphone to itunes. Tried reconnecting a million times, rebooted my computer, and tried to reset my iphone. It won't turn off or reset. When I was finally able to get it connected to itunes again, it says it must be restored. I freaked out, because my pictures didn't get backed up (even though I had them checked) and I can't afford to lose them, or any of my contacts and calendar events that also didn't manage to get backed up. I finally gave in and decided to restore, and it won't even try to restore. My phone worked perfectly well before this update. To top everything off I'm going out of town tomorrow and now have no phone, no ipod, and no internet. Any suggestions would be appreciated, the only option I have for now is to go to AT&T tomorrow and rant for them to pull the info off my phone if possible and restore it for me. HELP!
