Restore macbook air

Hi all, can someone lemme know how to restore my macbook air to factory settings

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If your Mac came with Lion or Mountain Lion, press Command, Option and R keys on boot, open Disk Utility, erase the disk and reinstall OS X. If it came with Snow Leopard or eqrlier, you must use Remote Disk or the USB SuperDrive

  • Restore MacBook Air v1.1 but how to get os x 10.7

I restored my macbook air due to a crashed harddisk. I was running 10.7 (on line purchase), have the original 10.6 Snow Leopard, but need to upgrade to 10.7. How?????

Mac OS X 10.6.6 and newer version have got the App Store. Look in your Dock for the Mac App Store icon, and press it.
If you don't find OS X Lion as a purchased item, maybe it's hidden. Unhide it > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
If, after doing everything, you can't get Lion, contact with the App Store support > http://www.apple.com/support/mac/app-store/contact

  • How to restore macbook air

My Macbook Air starts up and freezes on the Apple logo with the loading spiral and wont do anything else from there.
Is there a way that I can completely restore the macbook air - there's nothing important on it that I need.
    Thanks,
    Andy

Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Please Help.  Restore macbook air

Hi everyone. I've tried to restore my macbook air using the remote disc method described many times in this forum, but I think I have a new issue never discussed. Here is what I'm doing:
    1. Insert cd into my iMac
    2. Reboot macbook air and hold down option key
    3. Connect to wifi network and select remote MacOS cd as the bootup
Now, after I do all that, all I get is the loading screen. Eventually the machine will restart and boot up as it normally does to the operating system. What am I doing wrong here. All I want to do is restore my computer to it's original state. Please help me.

Thanks for the response. I get past step 9 where I select 'continue in Remote Install Mac OS X and my macbook air goes to a loading screen with a rotating globe. After it loads for about 5 minutes, the machine restarts and simply loads Mac OS X without entering the setup.

  • Restore MacBook Air and change ownership

    MacBook Air 11", 1.4GHz, (Early 2014 model)
    Model No: A1465
I'm trying to restore my MacBook Air to factory settings so I can sell/change ownership.
Following restart, I did not have a Recovery HD options.
So I used the Internet Recovery to erase my HD but when I click on reinstall OS X - it only gives me the option to install OS X Yosemite (not the original OS X).
Can someone inform me how I can restore?  Or can the next owner use OS X Yosemite without problems updating/logging in?
Any information very much appreciated (feeling like I've made a mistake along the way already!)

No - they belong to the original purchaser - you will have to purchase your own copies

  • How best to restore Macbook Air (OSX Lion) from backup?

So, I started up my Macbook Air yesterday and it wouldn't boot. Command-V at boot revealed that the filesystem is currupt; in particular, it hung up on a specific file (/private/var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/sqlindex-shm). The problem cannot be fixed by Disk Utility. The harddrive is encrypted with Filevault2.
Luckily, I have a backup (using CCC), but it is a day old (and that day had some important work and apps installed that I'd prefer not to reinstall). I installed Lion on a USB stick, booted up, and used CCC to clone the whole hard disk to an external USB drive. I could mount, but not write to, the corrupted drive. As expected, it had problems copying the particular corrupted file. So, I copied my day-old backup of the offending file to the external USB drive, and now I can boot my system off that. Yay!
But it wasn't without a hitch. Several apps seem to think that they hadn't been run before (like dropbox and textwrangler). I assume that this might be caused by the Volume name change? Everything SEEMS fairly normal, though. So, at this point, I wonder how to proceed. Here are my options, as I see them:
    1. Reformat the corrupt hard disk, and copy all files off the USB external HD to the newly formatted internal drive, and hope that there are no other issues with corrupt files that I didn't know about. If I do this, how do I format the internal drive so that the OS will know to boot off it? Should I encrypt it, or leave it unencrypted and then enable filevault2 again after booting off it successfully? How can I check that everything is OK once I successfully boot of the reconstituted internal drive?
    2. Install OSX Lion clean. I'd rather not do this, due to the problem of reinstalling apps, redoing cron jobs, etc. But at least this way I minimize the chances that other OS files are corrupt. If I choose this option, how can I minimize the pain of reinstalling apps? What about apps like MacTex and ParagonNTFS, that have files in places other than the Applications folder? Can I just copy those over, too?
So, which of these routes should I take? Or is there a third route that would be even better? Since I have full backups, it seems like I'm pretty flexible.
*(I should mention that for speed of backup, I excluded large, relatively expendable files, like VM hard disk files that I can remake, from my regular backups. So restoring from the day-old backup would be some trouble, on top of just restoring the old work.)

Thanks much, that seems to have worked!
(Now just have to figure out why the Time Machine backup didn't contain quite everything we expected; but I can always pop the old hard drive and get the last few things from there is necessary.)

  • Restoring Macbook Air

I have a Macbook Air OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 and I want to restore it back to it's original state, like when I first purchased it. I tried using the OS X Recovery tool to reinstall the OS X but it didn't do what I thought it would do. How do I restore my Mac?

    Follow these instructions:
What to do before selling or giving away your Mac
    In addition to the above:
If you enabled FileVault, disable it in System Preferences > Security & Privacy.
"Deauthorize" your iTunes account. Same for Audible if you have one.
System Preferences > iCloud > de-select "Back to My Mac" and "Find my Mac".
Sign out of iCloud. Select "Delete from Mac" when it appears.
    Then:
Start your Mac OS X Recovery
Remove any Open Firmware password if you created one: select Firmware Password Utility from the Utilities menu and remove it.
Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
Remove any partitions you may have created.
Select the Mac's hard disk icon, then select the "Erase" tab.
Select the "Security Options" button and erase the disk.
The more "securely" you erase the disk, the longer it will take. The fastest method is sufficient since all but the most expensive techniques and equipment will be able to recover securely erased data.
When it finishes, quit Disk Utility.
Select Install Mac OS X from the Utilities menu. Do not create any user accounts.
When it finishes, shut down the computer.
Your MacBook Air will now be in the state it was when you first purchased it.

  • Restore Macbook Air mid-2012 to Factory Settings for Sale

    Greetings from Brazil!
I am about to sell mey macbook air. It came with OS X Mountain Lion. So I would like to reset everything, update the Mac Os X Lion, install some apps and, when I hand over the computer to the new owner, I would like him to get the Assitant Set Up experience. Is there a way to do it?
    Thank you!
    Gilson

It should, but the bottom comment may be easier.
[kirkmc adds: I'm running this hint because it contains a lot of useful information. But I wonder why one can't simply erase the hard disk and re-run the installer to get everything back to its initial state. That seems a lot easier to me…]

  • Restoring Macbook Air from someone else's backup.

Got a new macbook pro.  Used timemachine to transfer files.  Worked great.  Want to give my old Macbook Air to a colleague.  Not OSX disk, but I want to wipe my computer and let her set up the air from her timemachine backup.  What do we do?

Follow these instructions step by step to prepare a Mac for sale:
Step One - Back up your data:
           A. If you have any Virtual PCs shut them down. They cannot be in their "fast saved" state. They must be shut down from inside Windows.
           B. Clone to an external drive using using Carbon Copy Cloner.
              1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
              2. Select the Source volume from the Select a source drop down menu on the left side.
              3. Select the Destination volume from the Select a destination drop down menu on the right
                  side.
              4. Click on the Clone button. If you are prompted about creating a clone of the Recovery HD be
                  sure to opt for that.
Destination means a freshly erased external backup drive. Source means the internal
                   startup drive.
Step Two - Prepare the machine for the new buyer:
              1. De-authorize the computer in iTunes! De-authorize both iTunes and Audible accounts.
2, Remove any Open Firmware passwords or Firmware passwords.
              3. Turn the brightness full up and volume nearly so.
              4. Turn off File Vault, if enabled.
              5. Disable iCloud, if enabled: See.What to do with iCloud before selling your computer
Step Three - Install a fresh OS:
         A. Snow Leopard and earlier versions of OS X
              1. Insert the original OS X install CD/DVD that came with your computer.
              2. Restart the computer while holding down the C key to boot from the CD/DVD.
              3. Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu; repartition and reformat the internal hard drive.
Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
              4. Install OS X.
              5. Upon completion DO NOT restart the computer.
              6. Shutdown the computer.
         B. Lion and Mountain Lion (if pre-installed on the computer at purchase*)
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because
it is three times faster than wireless.
              1. Restart the computer while holding down the COMMAND and R keys until the Mac OS X
                  Utilities window appears.
              2. Select Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Utilities window and click on the Continue button.
              3. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click
on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
              4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button
and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
              5. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
              6. Quit DU and return to the Mac OS X Utilities window.
              7. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
              8. Upon completion shutdown the computer.
*If your computer came with Lion or Mountain Lion pre-installed then you are entitled to transfer your license once. If you purchased Lion or Mountain Lion from the App Store then you cannot transfer your license to another party. In the case of the latter you should install the original version of OS X that came with your computer. You need to repartition the hard drive as well as reformat it; this will assure that the Recovery HD partition is removed. See Step Three above. You may verify these requirements by reviewing your OS X Software License.

  • Can't restore MacBook Air

Mac started glitching and then shut itself down. Now it will only come back on in recovery modeand ask me to reinstall OSX 10.7. I cannot access the app store to get it and I never purchased 10.7, my computer came preloaded with it. Is there any way that I can do this without purchasing the software? Really if you have to purchase the software then it's a bit of a ripoff isn't it? This is honestly the only problem I have had a problem like this with any Apple product.

If your air came with lion preinstalled when it was new then you don't ever need to buy lion. It is included with the computer. So from that internet boot screen use disk utility to repartition the drive as one partition and then reinstall lion. No need to buy it, it is included.
But if your air just shut down and it can't find the os to boot from I suspect there is a hardware problem. Like the ssd in your air has failed. If you can't successfully install lion from the internet boot then you will need to take the system to apple to be diagnosed and fixed. Hopefully you still have some warranty left. If not then the fix will be at your expense.

  • How do I restore MacBook Air with time machine

I've done backups to time machine but have no clue how to restore. I have a problem with Open Office hanging up and it doesn't help to delete it and download again.

    From Apple support article: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
To restore individual files see Restoring specific files or folders.
Restoring your entire system from a backup
Hold down the Command and R keys at startup to start the computer from the Recovery system. The Recovery menu that appears includes the option to restore from a Time Machine backup. If you are using Mac OS X Snow Leopard, start your computer from the installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility.

I cannot access the app store to get it and I never purchased 10.7, my computer came preloaded with 10.6. Is there any way that I can do this without purchasing the software? It won't let me erase it, re-partition, or buy it and also if I try to just do a reinstall of Lion it says verifying eligability with Apple and gets stuck in a loading loop that I can't escape without manually shutting the computer down.

You will have to contact Apple Customer Service for duplicate installation media.  Have you MBA serial number ready and there is a charge.
I suspect that your problem is that Lion is registered under a different Apple ID, therefore you will have to start with Snow Leopard and establish your own Apple ID.
    Ciao.
