Restore Missing Mailbox

I have an old email account with an ISP that I no longer have an account for. However I do need to retain access to the old email messages.
I'm not quite sure how but I appear to have lost all the messages for this inbox for this particular account. I don't have it in Time Machine but I do have a copy on an old hard disk. Is there a way I can copy the file across and replace the empty one on my computer?
The backup is a OS X 10.9.1 where as my current system used OS X 10.10 - Would this cause any problems?

Thanks. I'm trying to find out if there is anyway to restore the inbox in the original position?

  • Missing mailbox and time machine

Somehow I lost a mailbox from Mail. No problem I thought, I've got time machine. So I go to the Mail folder in my library then to the mailbox and start Time Machine. I highlight the mail box and ask time Machine to restore. What I get when I open Mail is an empty mailbox folder.
Since the mailbox was more important than my recent mail, I opened applications and restarted Time Machine. I went back a couple of days until my mailbox was present and asked Time Machine to restore the Mail program. It did but still with an empty mailbox folder for my missing mailbox.
So I tried again with Time Machine and actually opened my missing mailbox where I could see all the e-mail and open individual letters. It was there. I highlighted the email and Time Machine said click restore. I did and I don't think anything happened. At least my mailbox folder was still empty when I opened Mail.
Is there any way to restore a missing mailbox with Time Machine?

Actually I must have done something right. If I searched Mail for an email address I knew was in my missing mailbox, it could find it and actually open the letter, but it didn't tell me where it was.
In looking under the mailbox menu down at the bottom it says "rebuild." So I opened my empty mailbox and clicked on rebuild. Like magic, my mail reappeared.

    Hello Jessica472,
It sounds like you need to recover some missing files but do not have access to the iWork '09 disc you used to install it. If you have a Time Machine backup and know what files you need, you can use the "Restoring specific files or folders" section of the following article to restore them:
Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac
If you do not have Time Machine, you will need the disc to reinstall the software suite.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • How do I restore iCloud mailboxes from Time Machine without losing new mail?

This morning when I opened my laptop and checked my email, Apple Mail decided to flag every single email in my three separate Apple-related accounts ([email protected],[email protected], and [email protected])—some 14,500+ emails total. None of the emails in my comcast or yahoo accounts were affected. Of course, each of the three accounts is set to download copies to my laptop as well as keep them on the server, so now all of those emails are flagged across the board—on my iMac, my iPhone, my iPad mini as well as my laptop. Yay. Since some of the emails were actually flagged intentionally by me over time, I don't want to just unflag everything or I'll lose my flags as well as the ones spontaneously generated this morning.
    My questions are:
    1) If I use a Time Machine backup from last night to restore the three affected mailboxes, will iCloud accept them as the de facto most up-to-date versions, or do I still have to go through some complicated process in order to convince the cloud that the 14,500+ unflagged emails don't then need to be "updated" to flagged status?
    2) More importantly, will the cloud still sync properly so that I still get all of the emails that came since last night? I'm fine if the absence of the more recent emails from the "new" (actually older TM) mailboxes is interpreted as though they've been deleted, since my preferences are set to keep deleted email on the server for a month. But it would be a problem if those emails simply disappear into the ether.
    3) Does anyone have any idea what might have caused the random flagging in the first place and/or suggestions for keeping it from happening in the future?
I remember vaguely that in the early days of Time Machine, restoring iCloud mailboxes was a complicated process in order to trick the cloud into accepting the Time Machine backup as the latest and greatest version. I take it that's no longer such a tricky proposition nowadays, since a search of Apple's knowledge base yielded little information on it. I'd appreciate some confirmation on that, however, so I know what to expect after the restore.
    Thanks!
I'm going to try cross-posting this issue in both the iCloud and Time Machine forums since it's some of both. Apologies in advance if that causes confusion.

I set up an admin account for myself, logged on to it, and then followed the procedure in the help file to delete his account, saving it as a .dmg file.  Then, when he asked for his old emails, I followed the procedure in the help file to restore a deleted user account and copied the contents of the .dmg into it.
I'm not entirely confident I got the restoration sequence right, since I find the order of steps in the help file confusing. But everything except the Mail data seems to be recovered.
Another source of trouble may be the email account settings:  when I opened Mail under his log-on, there were no accounts set up: I recreated them using his email address and password, but Mail may well be treating these as new accounts, rather than re-opened old accounts.
    Thanks, John

  • How do I "restore" a Mailbox from an archive?

I know how to Archive a Mailbox (Mail > Mailbox > Archive Mailbox > choose a location to store the archive file) and it works.
But how do I restore a Mailbox from this archived file? I have not found ANY reference in the help menu about what to do with an archived mailbox and what it should be good for.
I'd appreciate any pointers to understand this archiving business better. Thanks and cheers, Veit

The reason that I could not find the "Import mailbox" feature: I looked in the Mailbox tab, where one would expect it to be.
Thanks for the solution, it worked perfectly.
By the way: What is the difference between these three Mailboxes?:
    Inbox>Veit (i.e. my first name)
that's the inbox for your email account. you evidently called it Viet.
(I also have one for my wife and for an old POP account) and
    On My Mac, and
    Veit
that's just a local mailbox in "on my mac" section called Viet. it's not tied to any account and exists only on your computer.
Let me know if you can enlighten me there.

  • Cannot restore a mailbox from Time Machine

On the recent Yosemithe I cannot restore a mailbox from my Time Machine backup. I proceed exactly as described in the Mail (Yosemite): Restore mailboxes and their content article. However, nothing happens after the process window completes. The restored content does not appear anywhere.
    Any ideas?

Although you can restore messages from a Time Machine snapshot within the Mail application, it generally won't work with messages that were saved by an obsolete version of Mail. In that case, you have to use an alternative method.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open. Inside it are subfolders representing your Mail accounts. The names refer to the email addresses you use.
Enter Time Machine and scroll back to the snapshot you want. Select the account folders you want and then select  Restore ... to... from the action menu (gear icon) in the toolbar of the snapshot window. Restore the folders to the Desktop, not to their original location.
From the Mail menu bar, select
              File ▹ Import Mailboxes...
Choose Apple Mail as the format and import from the mailboxes in the folders you restored to the Desktop. The imported messages will appear in a new mailbox. Move the ones you want to keep wherever you like and delete the rest. Then delete the folders on the Desktop.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

Still don't have the "Mail" notes created before erasing the drive. Am I missing a file?
Dunno about notes... I personally think that this is not something that belongs in a mail client and am a bit annoyed Apple stuffed it in there.
I have to enter a password for the account for the mailboxes. The only passwords I use don't work, is there a way to change the password?
That is specific to your e-mail account, and generally changing passwords requires knowing the old one. You'll need to contact the e-mail provider and ask them to reset the password for you.
What is the best way to move the old address book to the clean drive.
That stuff is all stored in *~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/*. Also, in ~/Library/Preferences/, there are two Address Book-related files:
    com.apple.AddressBook.abd.plist
    com.apple.AddressBook.plist

  • Yahoo can restore your mailbox

I contacted yahoo after the iPhone deleted all the messages out of my acct and recieved this reply:
    Hello Dave,
    Thanks for contacting Yahoo! Mobile.
I apologize that you had that many email messages deleted. That would
really frustrate me. I am more than happy to restore your mailbox to a
previous date so you can recover these messages.
While the iPhone is a great piece of equipment, there have been quite a
few issues with it an Yahoo! services and you are not the only person
who has reported this issue. Apple and Yahoo! are working together to
    resolve these issues.
Our servers talk with the iPhone and basically do what it says, so the
problem is the iPhone and not your Yahoo! Mail, however we are working
together with Apple to prevent these issues in the future. I would
assume that before the iPhone you had been using Yahoo! Mail pretty much
without issue, at least for 4 years as you describe.
Again, please let me know if you would like to restore the mailbox. If
so, can you please provide the date to which these messages disappeared
and if you have received any new mail since that date, please forward it
to another address for archival before the restore.
Thanks again for contacting Yahoo! Mobile.

  • Restoration of Mailbox to another user

    Good afternoon all
    Exchange: 2013
    Outlook: 2013
I have yet another question relating to the recovery of a mailbox. What I require is the ability to restore a mailbox of a user from a recovery database to a temporary user account without a mailbox.
Basically what has happened, is a user has deleted their mailbox rules and I am trying to recover them by restoring a backup of their mailbox to an RDB and then restoring this mailbox to a newly created temporary user account so I can then export the rules
and get the user to import them. Is this possible or is there a better way?
I do not require assistance with the restore of a mailbox database to a recovery database, I am more than comfortable doing this. It's just when I got to the point of restoring the mailbox from the recovery database I had created I was unsure of how to proceed.
As always, any help and advice I can be given will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi
Really sorry to keep asking questions, but I get this when I run the command to restore a mailbox from the RDB to another temporary user's mailbox. Is this expected and I should use the '-AllowLegacyDNMismatch' switch?
Source mailbox's legacyExchangeDN '/o=******* ***/ou=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)/cn=Recipients/cn=7a38b514502f4a04abc1b5a370212b23-****** *****' doesn't match the legacyExchangeDN or X500 proxy for target mailbox 'MailboxRecoveryUser1'.
Use the 'AllowLegacyDNMismatch' switch if you want to allow this operation.

    Thank you.

    Hi Karan,
Based on my knowledge, Backup Exec offers 2 ways to restore Exchange data.
    1. Using Mailbox database restore.
    2. Restore individual mailbox or mail items from the backup set.
Besides, I'm not familiar with the third-party software Backup Exec. I recommend you ask more assistance about Symantec Backup Exec from Backup Exec vendor.
What's more, we can use DPM to restore individual mailbox.
Here is an article for your reference.

  • Missing Mailbox

I am missing a Mailbox in Mail. It has not been used for at least a year. When I tried to access it today, I got the message "Email needs to be downloaded. Take this account online." for each message in the mailbox. These emails were years old and had already been downloaded and deleted from the server. The accounts for the emails shown were already online and had downloaded other already today.
When I tried to rebuild the mailbox all the messages disappeared and the mailbox is completely empty. There are other mailboxes in this folder and they perform as usual. I've no problems with any other mailbox.
How can restore these emails? Thanks for your help

    Hi to all,
I've had similar Mail problems and have been reading a lot of posts. I think everyone should read carefully the info on Mac Help and elsewhere about rebuilding mailboxes before you do it. My particular Mail setup (before I lost it) was to delete my messages from my server after I downloaded them into Mail, so a rebuild would only give me an empty mailbox. After I spent a lot of time importing all the messages I could find, I certainly didn't want to start over. I also looked around and discovered that my messages were in user/Pictures/Library/Mail/Mailboxes instead of user/Library/Mail/Mailboxes (don't know why, don't remember setting it up there), so take some time to look around carefully to find all the old messages.
After "successfully" importing into a newly setup Mail mailbox, I discovered I could not read or move messages -- I got the "offline" error message. So I shut down Mail and made a copy by holding down the Alt key and dragging the user/Library/Mail folder (where my newly created mailbox was) to my desktop. Then I restarted Mail and imported from this desktop backup file -- this gave me a "good" mailbox that I could then further set up with sub-mailboxes, etc. Maybe a tip for others ....

    Laurie

  • How to I restore missing StickiesDatabase file from Time Machine?

I have looked all over for a solution to this. Basically, I am trying to restore a stickiesdatabase file from a Time Machine backup. I put in a new HD and am slowly pulling files over in pieces. The thing is, the backup that had the stickies I want to restore did not seem to back that file up. I navigated to user/library to find StickiesDatabase, and it is not there, even though I went into the terminal and unhid invisible folders and files (other greyed out invisibles showed up so I know it worked). But here's the weird thing, when looking on my current hard drive, I could find that file for my new, empty stickies just fine. Also, I went further to a Time Machine backup from a year ago, and I found the stickiesdatabase file in the library as well. It's like these last two backups I did that had the stickies I want did not include that file in the backup. Any thoughts? Am I doomed? Oh, and I am currently on Mavericks and the backup in question was also Mavericks. And I have a 2008 Macbook Pro if that info is helpful.

There is another, huge thread on TM backups on this forum and exactly this issue has come up. Sadly, no one has a perfect answer. I do not have a spare drive available to test this myself, but I would try something along these lines.
-- Ask TM to restore your full Library and the Masters, if Referenced. I believe that TM will give you the option to not overwriting your current Library, but be careful. However you do, stick this "Recovery Library" out somewhere. (Yes, this is gonna take some time, run it overnight.)
-- Open "Recovery" with Aperture and select the Project(s) that contain the images you want. Export these "Projects as New Library."  (Don't export as either Versions or Masters.) I would select the box "Consolidate Masters" and I would probably discard the Previews. Stick this somewhere.
-- Now open "Original Library" and import the "Library" that you exported back into your Original Library as something like "Stupid Lost Project."
-- You should now have a Project full of adjusted, and adjustable images. (N.B. this is basically the technique I use with my laptop. I shoot, load into AP3 on the laptop, noodle, and then export/import into AP3 on the MacPro when I get home.)
-- Clean up. (Delete "Recovery", convert the recovered Project back to Referenced Masters, if you wish, etc.)
One good argument for never throwing those old USB drives away.
I have missed some of the details in the process, so be careful, but I believe that this will work until Apple lets us run Aperture inside Time Machine.
    Best wishes.

I am currently trying to reedit some old work, unfortunately, I lost the memory card with all the original files, is there a way I can restore the files in LR without the originals? I figure since the program still has some of the data and can show us a preview of the images, there should be a way around this.

I assume you copied the original memory card files to HDD during import into LR. Did you later move the files or the containing folder to another location from outside LR and now they are missing?
