Restore music on new pc from Backup disc made from my other pc - no dialog

I did made a backup disc from my notebook and want to export the music to my nea pc by restoring the music on my backup disc to my new pc but the dialog does not appear when inserting the backup disc in my new pc. The 2 x computers are not linked via a network so I cannot transfer the music via the network.
Please advise

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself independently backed up against loss.  To use a device with a new computer you transfer the content from the old computer (or its backup) directly to the new computer, not the device to the new computer. Media syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software.  See this document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Technically if you no longer own the CD then you no longer have the right to a copy of the music.

  • I keep getting a 'Looking for backup disc' message from my  Time Capsule.

I keep getting a 'Looking for backup disc' message from my  Time Capsule. I have set it up several times without any apparent problems (I have even done a Hard and Factory reset). Everything seems fine until I ask Timemachine to 'back up', and then the problems start.
    Any ideas?

I had the exact same problem. I bought the Time Capsule this past July and it worked fine for about a month then it told me it hadn't backed up in 10 days and was stuck looking for the backup drive. I called Apple and they said the reason was that the Time Capsule was in Bridge mode. I launched Airport Utility and sure enough, it was. I changed it to DCHP and NAT (Airport Utility -> Network tab -> Router Mode). After updating the Time Capsule, I couldn't even get on the Internet, let alone do a backup. A logged into the software for my cable modem and discovered that it too was in Bridge mode.
It turned out (for me) that neither should be in Bridge mode (which is for connecting two networks). Your cable modem only has one IP address. Your Time Capsule should be doing the NAT (Network Address Translation) which translates the internal IP addresses on your network to the one IP address your cable modem has. When I switched my Time Capsule to DHCP and NAT, it conflicted with the fact that the cable modem was also trying to do this. The answer was to turn this off on the modem (allowing all the packets to just go through the modem to the Time Capsule and let IT do the NAT). I did that last week and since then, my Time Capsule has been working perfectly.
    1) Go to your cable modem (via a browser, enter "http://192.168.100.1"). Log-in and find the setting that indicates NAT. If you're uncomfortable doing this or can't find it, call your cable company and ask Tech Support to do it for you. They can do it remotely.
    2) Launch Airport Utilty. Go to the Network Tab and change the router mode to "DHCP and NAT".
    3) You may need to restart your modem and Time Capsule. I can't remember if I had to or not.
I hope this helps. I tried many things but this is the only solution that fixed it for me. And it makes sense. Only one device, the cable modem or the Time Capsule, can be doing the NAT.

when importing tunes from cd disc, songs from 1 albumn all appear as a differnet albumn, only happens from compilations, how can this be fixed? I am using PC with windows 7.
    Thanks.

Generally all you need to do is fill in an appropriate Album Artist, though for compilations you should also set the part of a compilation flag to yes. For more details see my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic One album, too many covers.

  • "Restoring" to a new drive using Backup, which Catalog is active now?

I have PSE 5 and just added a new internal hard drive because the original drive (my C drive) is nearly full. I read some posts here about moving the files using the Folder View, etc. (I got the memo on DO NOT move using Windows Explore, so I am at least somewhat coachable) and I successfully moved a few individual folders from the C dirve to the new drive, but then couldn't figure out how to do a mass move. I have 34k photos occupying 146 GB of space with hundreds of folders.  So rightly or wrongly, I decided to populate the files to the new drive using the "Restore from Backup" command using a current Full Backup that is on my external hard drive that I use strictly for backing up.  That seemed to go just fine.  When I open the Organizer, the file locations map to the new internal drive as desired. I've disconnected the external drive now to keep it safe.
My question is regarding which is the current and correct Catalog File.  When I used the "restore" command, all the files and the Catalog file were copied from the external back up drive to the new internal hard drive. (That is no surprise.)  But of course there is a Catalog file also on the original C drive.  So when I open the Organizer, which Catalog is being opened, the one on my C drive, or the one on the new internal hard drive?  How would one know?  When I look at Edit/Preferences/Files, it still says I'm mapping the Catalog File to reside on my C drive. (Again, not a surprise, it has always resided on my C drive).  I'm ok with that long term, but having two identical Catalog files one two different hard drives seems like a bad plan.  I want to delete the (now duplicate) photo files off my C drive now to regain capacity, and I thought I should delete the Catalog file also from either the C drive or the new internal hard drive I just populated with the photo files. I just don't know which one is "active".
Any help here is greatly appreciated.  Once I get this figured out and I clear the C drive, I intend to update to PSE 8, so I'll be reading up on pointers as to how to do that smoothly.

Thanks Barb.  I do find the Catalog Folder on my C (original) drive.  I do not see it on the new drive near where the new Catalog is. This is supported by what I said in the earlier post that when I moved the Catalog Folder (containing the thumbnail cache) from my C drive to my desktop and then opened the Organizer, I got the "hourglass" and could tell the thumbs were being (slowly) recreated.  I moved the file back, re-opened the Organizer and they populated normally.
I am very curious (more like concerned) to know how to get it all files working from the same place on the new drive. When I check Edit/Preferences/Files, the "Save Catalogs In:" option is still mapping to my C drive, because I never changed that; I just restored from backup to a new drive.  Could that mean that as time goes on I'll be writing Catalog updates to certain folders on the C drive, and other files (like the main Catalog) will be updating on the new drive?  I sure don't want that.  My goal is to DELETE everything related to PSE from the C drive (i've already deleted all the actual photo files) but I can't tell if that'll wreak havoc with these Catalog Folders.   I wonder if I need to map the Save Catalogs In to the new drive.  What's odd is that I know the program is accessing the main Catalog from the new drive.  I moved that file to my desktop and when I opened the Organizer I got the message saying the Catalog wasn't there and asking for me to point to it.  I moved the Catalog back to the new drive and it worked fine.

  • Why can't I restore from a backup (backup file made from another Z10 now gone)

I made a backup yesterday from my old Z10 (now exchanged and security wiped)
I want to restore to my new Z10. But Blackberry link (1.2.1.18) won't open the backup, it's greyed out and it says 'can't find any backup from this phone'.
How do I restore this backup from a different phone?

    Ira,
    Thanks for your suggestions.
I haven't ever changed my Blackberry user ID - unless somehow I was logged out if that's possible, on the old machine.
The new phone after setup downloaded an upgrade to BB10 that is a newer version (I assume) than the old phone.
Is there no way to unlock this backup? What is the point of having a backup system you can't restore from? The Link software has improved but throughout history it has been full of non-working DRM that seems designed to frustrate and make impossible the simplest tasks. Can I turn off the security somehow?

  • Restoring Music to New Drive

We got a new hard drive. When restoring from Time Capsule, I needed to eliminate restoring music for space. How do I get music from my iphone to the new hard drive. Or, how do I get music from Time Capsule to new hard drive? I also got an external drive to move files to before doing the music restore.

So this is clear, you want you iTunes media on the external drive?  Why not put the whole library there?  It makes it a lot easier to move in the furutre and if the external drive will have to be on in order to play anything then you might as well keep it all together neat and tidy.
You don't say how you had it organized previosly which makes it hard to tell you what needs moving where.  If it was all together before, copy the entire iTunes folder to the desired drive, then start iTunes while holding down the option/alt key and guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file on the new drive.

  • Building iphoto library from backup discs

I have decided to finally build a photo library. I have about 900 photos backed up on discs when I was using iphoto 4. I am now using a 2010 mac mini with iphoto 9. I was able to preview the photos last evening and would like to start transfering them. What are the do and don'ts for this? Can I just drag them over to photos and then make albums or just make the albums now and drag over. I want to keep things organized and avoid duplicates. If a photo is in the photo library and I drag it to an album does that mean there are two copies of that photo. On the backup discs there are folders such as data/thumbnails, do I need to concern myself with this when importing the photos. Thanks for your assistance.

I have about 900 photos backed up on discs when I was using iphoto 4.
Are these just jpeg files or are they in an iPhoto Library?
On the backup discs there are folders such as data/thumbnails, do I need to concern myself with this when importing the photos.
That sounds like an iPhoto Library Folder, is it?
It's a key issue and once we know that we can figure out how to proceed.

  • Recovery from recovery discs made with recovery manager on g62

I got the blue screen of death and had to do a system restore for my hp g62 laptop. Before i restored the computer, the recovery manager launched and had me backup my files. I backed up the system on like 15 discs using hp"s recovery manager. After it was done, i returned the computer back to factory settings. Now, im having a problem using the recovery discs made thru the recovery manager. The files arent being read. I tried to copy them and move them onto the hard drive....and they are all saved as .wim files....which arent read by anything. So i have all my files backed up, but that arent opening. How the hell do i open my files that i backed up? How do i put my files back on the computer?

    Hi,
I've never really used the HP File Recovery system, but you can open an Image file as follows.
Download and install 7-Zip from the following link.
    http://www.7-zip.org/
When installed, right click on the .wim file, select 7-Zip, select Extract Files and click Ok - your files should be in the newly extracted folder.

  • My Purchased folder doesn't restore from Backup disc

I changed my iTunes music to an external drive (following the instructions listed by Jesse Hollington on Transferring your iTunes Library as suggested in a Support Discussion) but later decided I could live with it being back on my internal hard drive.
I have since noticed that not all my purchases are in my Purchased folder.  Having  recently performed File>Library>Backup to Disc I did a Restore with the Ovewriting option ticked.  All my Playlists are correctly showing but only one Purchased file is in the folder.  When I play some of my 'Purchased' songs from playlists I had created they play correctly. When I Get Information on the tracks they show up as AAC Purchased songs.
Can anyone assist as to why they do not show in to the Purchased folder?
I am using OSX 10.6.8 and iTunes 10.3.1

Well thanks for your help since you were the only one who commented, but I had already figured it out the next day I had posted this. There were two things wrong. 1: The sales person who went ahead and set-up my phone as a new phone was one thing and a recover had to be done. 2: My internet was down that night for some unknown reason while I was updating my phone, so that caused it to get stuck on that picture that's says "Connet to iTunes", but before that I was using my personal hotspot.
Again, thanks for your help .

  • Restoring iTunes from backup disc

I'm moving my music from old computer to new and according to the instructions the iTues will recognize the backup and ask if you want to restore - well it doesn't happen.
Is there a way I can restore from the iTunes software?

Moving your iTunes library to another computer
If you get a new computer, Setup Assistant helps you transfer files from another computer. If you don't transfer files during setup, you can transfer your iTunes library by connecting computers, or by using a portable hard drive or iPod.
For more information, open Mac Help (in the Finder, choose Help > Mac Help) and search for "transferring files between computers." Also click the links below to see articles on the Apple Service & Support website.
When you sell or give away a computer, don't forget to deauthorize it.

  • Restored my library from backup discs, need help with album art/playlist

Good morning everyone. Using the great information on this site I have successfully backed up "my library". I then reformatted my hd and reinstalled win xp and itunes. I was also successful in using the awesome restore feature of itunes. "My library" is back 100%.
The only thing left is the album art and my playlists- both currently on my ipod. My question is how do I update "my library" and "my playlist" from my ipod? I am worried that if I plug in my ipod without knowing what to do then my ipod will try to match "my library" (which does not have artwork) and thus my ipod will delete the album artwork. I have several thousand songs and would HATE to lose that artwork since it would be a time consuming pain to update those manually. Also I have 20 or so playlists on my ipod. I am afraid of losing those (currently on ipod) when I connect to itunes since it will try to update and match the now empty/blank playlist currently in itunes.
I am sure these are easy solutions for you pros out there. That's why I am asking! You folks have always given the proper help and advice whenever an issue has arisen. Thanks in advance!

    clever point...

some album covers just aren't exactly square, particularly if the CDs are sold in cardboard flip-cases.
I deal with artwork in a more hap-hazzard way, but most of the time, i get SQUARE results...
Just Google the album title, then click the IMAGES tab. More times than not, I find the album cover in multiple sizes and about every time, at least one version that is truly square.
All i need to do then is click the image, then again at the top of the resulting Google page (to show just the image - out of it's surrounding page), then drag the image directly to the Album Artwork Placeholder in the GET INFO tab (that has already been opened on multiple items - the whole album).

TM won't try to do a new backup or delete old ones unless you select the drive and turn TM on. Don't do that yet.
You probably want to use Migration Assistant, in your Applications/Utilities folder. It gives you the options of transferring various things, but you can't pick, for example, only certain 3rd-party applications.
To transfer individual files or folders, hold down the Option key while selecting the TM icon in your menubar. That will change +Enter Time Machine+ to +Browse Other Time Machine Disks,+ and you can see the backups from the old Mac there, and restore them selectively in the usual fashion.
If your old Mac was a PPC model, be very careful transferring things that may not be compatible with an Intel Mac.
Once you have your new Mac the way you want it, your best bet is to erase the TM drive via Disk Utility (also in Applications/Utilities) and start backing-up the new one fresh. If you leave the backups from the old Mac there, not only will they take up a lot of space, but they'll never be deleted automatically by TM.

when i sync my ipad to my new computer, apple tells me it is synced to a different computer and can only have one, the old computer has died, what can i do i don`t want to loose all my music, as some of it is not recoverable, hope you can help?

Your old computer has died, but surely, since it contained nonrecoverable music, you've made a backup.
Simply move the contents of the iTunes folder in your computer's backup to the iTunes folder on your new computer.  You should then be good to go.
