"restore needed", then subsequent "no sim" problem

I purchased an iPhone in the US, and installed sim card. It has worked fine for at least a month. I am currently in China, and the phone has functioned just fine. When I woke up this morning, the phone said I was unable to send and receive calls, and that I needed to restore.
I plugged in phone to restore, but computer locked up on me almost immediately when restoring. Once rebooting computer, and trying to go to iTunes to resolve issue, it is now saying it cannot backup phone as there is no sim installed.
I will be in China for another week, and am lost without phone and business contacts. The authorized reseller here was not helpful, advising they could not help.
Any ideas?

Welcome to the discussions,
carrier locked phones will only work if you insert the SIM provided by the carrier, in your case AT&T.
If your SIM gets damaged, you'll need a replacement card.
If someone modifies the software to be able to use another provider, a restore will put the phone back to the original status, which would be carrier locked for the U.S. iPhones.

I finally see a dim light at the end of this restore drama, I managed to get my phone back to the post recovery stage finally, and with "restore needed" message

Same thing happens to me...all i see is the itunes and apple logo. Even though it's connected. It JUST doesn't wanna sync/restore/acknowledge there's a sim in my phone. I get NO SERVICE etc (that's if i'm lucky enough to have the phone in working order and not a black screen)

  • Restoring and then re installing maverick problem?

I am erasing my macbook air to factory settings. I erased the Macintosh HD disk and am trying to re install os x maverick. the problem is it says in order to do this i need to use an apple id that has purchased os x maverick in the past. This is my first macbook and i got it from a friend and now do not know what to do.

You need to download it through your own Apple ID. If you can't do it on your erased Mac, take a USB stick to a friend's place or an Apple Store and download it from there using your own Apple ID and then reinstall.

  • I recently inherited a restored iPhone 5 from my uncle and its needs a sim to be activated, could i use my friends sim just to activate my iPhone and then give the sim back once its activated without affecting his contract and later on get a sim ?

I recently inherited a restored iPhone 5 from my uncle and its needs a sim to be activated, could i use my friends sim just to activate my iPhone and then give the sim back once its activated without affecting his contract and later on get a sim for myself and a contract for me and it all be normal??? Thanks

The phone MUST have a SIM present in order for activation to complete. The process will not finish otherwise.
    For the OP:
If the iPhone 5 is locked to a carrier, you must use a SIM from that same carrier. Otherwise I think you would be OK borrowing the SIM to activate the phone.

  • HT3960 My iPhone will not update. it keeps asking me to restore but then says there's an internal error -1. At first it wouldn't update saying there was no SIM Card. This was a used phone that i had the SIM Card replaced

Got a used iPhone4 to replace my lost one, had the screen replaced and then had the SIM card replaced by Best Buy.
They had issues in the store connecting to iTunes but the Geek Squad where they wiped it and said all was good.
Got home to update it and all was good up to the point where i needed to have the phone to work.
Then it wouldn't recognize there was a SIM card and to restore my phone.
it comes up now with unable to restore, unknown error -1

There is no way that you can locate the iphone at all.
The thief can restore it and use it as their own.  You will never know or be able to tell what they do with it.
Very sorry.  Your iphone is gone.
Report it to the police and change your passwords.

  • Restore needed, but itunes wont see it???

    Hi,
Phone all of a sudden just turned off, then back out telling me to connect to itunes, i have done that but it comes up with
"Restore needed, blah blah" then itunes tells me that my sim is locked and doesnt see the phone??

Both of you can try this out and see if it works. The method below will put your iPhone into DFU mode:
    1. Connect your iPhone to your computer and open iTunes.
    2. Hold down the sleep and home button (ignore power off slider) and continue to hold for 7 seconds after the screen shuts off.
    3. Let go of the sleep button, but continue to hold the home button. The screen should stay black while in DFU mode, if it turns on try the process again.
    4. iTunes should pop-up saying that there is a iPhone in recovery mode.
    5. Try restoring now.
Let me know if it works for you. If you are using a MAC to do this, you cannot be on 10.5.6, you have to update to 10.5.7. There was a problem with 10.5.6 recognizing iPhone's in DFU mode, but it was corrected in 10.5.7.

  • Persistent Restore Needed error

Almost since purchasing my 16 MB 3GS last summer, I have been getting the dreaded "Restore Needed iPhone cannot make or receive calls. Restore from iTunes" error a few times a week. I have done the following steps in an attempt to fix this problem
    - Run multiple restores, including DFU restore
    - Replaced the entire phone through Apple
    - Replaced the SIM card through AT&T
    - Restored as a new phone and loaded NO apps and NO music/videos
And the problem STILL persists. Having ruled out the hardware, my AT&T account, and my content as the culprits, the only thing that remains is my email and calendar. I have an Exchange and a Gmail account that I sync email/contacts/calendar to the phone. My question is this: could my email accounts really be causing this problem? Has anyone else experienced this? I have not been able to find out much online and the "geniuses" at my local Apple store are stumped.

I am having the same problems with my 3GS. If you figure it out my problem will also be fixed. I have had my phone replaced three times. The phone must be restored every 2hrs - 3 days. I have tried all of your fixes PLUS
    Restore from Recovery Mode
    Changed from PC to iMac
    Changed USB cord
Removed and replaced the IPSW file in iTunes
I have been through 13 level 1 and 6 Senior Advisers at Apple and 1 ATT service adviser. HELP!!

  • HT201412 I dropped my iphone 4. It showed a 'sim problem' window and now has no service.

my iphone 4 slipped off a table and than later had a window that said 'sim problem' and now has no service.

    Hey 35Cotton,
I understand that you're encountering SIM/service issues on your iPhone. I would run through these troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue:
Update your iPhone to the latest version of iOS.
Toggle Airplane mode On and Off.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
Check for a carrier settings update. Tap Settings > General > About. If an update is available, a prompt will appear.
Remove the SIM Card and verify that it is a valid, carrier-manufactured SIM. Also verify that it is not damaged, worn, or modified. Then reinsert it.
    Restore the iPhone.
If you still are unable to resolve this issue, contact Apple support for further assistance.

  • I'm trying to use my iphone 3g as an ipod now that I've upgraded to an iphone 4.  But it is telling me that I need to have a sim card in my iphone 3g to use it.  I don't want to use it as a phone at all so I wouldn't think that I need a sim card.

Actually, I wanted to let my son use my old iphone 3g as an ipod now that I upgraded to the iphone 4.
But it has continued to shut down and say that needed to restore it.
The last time I did it, it's now saying that I need to have a SIM card in order for it to work.
Now, I'm not wanting him to use it as a phone or for texting, so I just assumed this would work.  But it's been very challenging.
Any thoughts on what I need to do so he can use it as an ipod?
    Thanks!

I need help in resolving a problem that prevents me from accessing the iTunes store.  Message reads " iTunes cannot contact the iTunes store" and also says that my laptop is no longer authorized to access my account.  Help!

Go up to the top of your screen on iTunes and click on 'Store'.  Then go down to 'Authorize This Computer'.  That should cover part of it unless you've already authorized a bunch of other computers to use your account.  If that's the case, you'll have to go to one of those computers and click the button just below it to 'deauthorize your account' from that computer.  If you're not able to access the store, check your internet connection to make sure you are connected.  Hope this helps.. good luck!
