Restore needed -There is no SIM
I finally see a dim light at the end of this restore drama, I managed to get my phone back to the post recovery stage finally, and with "restore needed" message
I think the drama will end.I will be glad if I come out of this.On connecting to Itunes, I get the message "There is no SIM Card in the phone you are trying to activate" I might have inserted the SIM card at least four or five times.Checking forums for an answer.
Same thing happens to me...all i see is the itunes and apple logo. Even though it's connected. It JUST doesn't wanna sync/restore/acknowledge there's a sim in my phone. I get NO SERVICE etc (that's if i'm lucky enough to have the phone in working order and not a black screen)
Getting frustrating

"restore needed", then subsequent "no sim" problem
I purchased an iPhone in the US, and installed sim card. It has worked fine for at least a month. I am currently in China, and the phone has functioned just fine. When I woke up this morning, the phone said I was unable to send and receive calls, and that I needed to restore.
I plugged in phone to restore, but computer locked up on me almost immediately when restoring. Once rebooting computer, and trying to go to iTunes to resolve issue, it is now saying it cannot backup phone as there is no sim installed.
I will be in China for another week, and am lost without phone and business contacts. The authorized reseller here was not helpful, advising they could not help.
Any ideas?Welcome to the discussions,
carrier locked phones will only work if you insert the SIM provided by the carrier, in your case AT&T.
If your SIM gets damaged, you'll need a replacement card.
If someone modifies the software to be able to use another provider, a restore will put the phone back to the original status, which would be carrier locked for the U.S. iPhones. -
Got a used iPhone4 to replace my lost one, had the screen replaced and then had the SIM card replaced by Best Buy.
They had issues in the store connecting to iTunes but the Geek Squad where they wiped it and said all was good.
Got home to update it and all was good up to the point where i needed to have the phone to work.
Then it wouldn't recognize there was a SIM card and to restore my phone.
it comes up now with unable to restore, unknown error -1
Help pleasePerhaps try the Error 1 or -1 advice from the following document:

You cannot active a phone if it does not have a SIM card in it. Period. End of discussion.
If you get this error and it has a SIM card in the phone then either the SIM card is defective or the phone is defective. Get a new SIM card and try again. If the problem occurs with the new SIM card the phone needs to be repaired. -
I am traveling to India, north and south, with my ipad 2, G-3. It is activated by AT and T. How do I use it in India? Do I need to purchase a sim card there and if so what kind? Would they be available in the Delhi airport or where else in central Delhi?
Also in order not to pay a fortune for the service is it better to acquire if needed a SIM card only once there?
Check with your carrier about roaming charges. They are usually prohibitive. Best to get a local SIM. -
How do i restore my iphone from "no Service". I tried to update my iphone 3G TO iOS 6.0. But it got stuck and now my itunes is displaying Error message: "there is no sim card installed in the iphone you are attempting to activate" and my iphone is without service. It sounds a lot like your phone was hacked or jailbroken to unlock it prior to your trying to update it.
If that is the case, it is nowpermanently bricked. -

The iPhone 3G is Not Compatible with iOS 6...
It also appears that your phone may have been Hacked and / or Jailbroken...
If this is the case... you are out of luck... Because...

Failed restore on iPhone 3GS because iTunes says there is no SIM card installed.
I have an unlocked iPhone3GS that I used in Thailand for 2 years with a Thai SIM card. Now I am back in the USA and I got a AT&T SIM card without a contract. I wanted to update to the newer version of iOS so I contacted AT&T and had them do an authorized iPhone unlock. I backed up my iPhone and then restored it in iTunes. After restarting the phone iTunes told me there was no SIM card installed in the device. I've taken the AT&T SIM card out and put it back in but nothing changes.
Any help or suggestions? The iPhone was jailbroken before I went to Thailand. I never had a contract in Thailand ethier. The phone was working fine on my new AT&T SIM card for 2 weeks until I went to restore and update the iOS.
I also tried to use WIFI to activate the device instead of iTunes. After a few minutes of trying that a mesage tells me that Apple can't activate it and to try use iTunes or contact Apple support. -
Is there a way to backup iphone when error message says restore needed
My iphone is with Verizon Wireless. This morning I lost service to the phone and when I attempted to restart it it has a message saying restore needed, telling me to plus it into iTunes. I've plugged it in to iTunes but iTunes is not recognizing my phone. Is there something else I can try? Verizon is sending me a new phone but I do not have a recent backup of this one.
Unfortunately you cannot backup a phone that will not start up.

i have a ipod touch 2g and after a restore none of my apps will restore because it says that i need a newer version of the ipod software to run them they all work fine till i did the restore . is there any way to get them back ?
Your only way is if you have the version that was compatible on your computer such as in the recycle bin/trash or in a computer file backup. In that case delete the current version that is in your iTunes App library and replace it with the older version. Then sync.
