Restore not working

I needed to reformat the hard drive on my powerbook to remove a partition. I thought this would be no problem thanks to Time Machine. I used my Leopard DVD to restore OS X and then tried the restore from Backup. When I did this, it never finished calculating the apps file, and allowed me to restore, or it appeared to, but it got stuck half way through. I have browsed the disk that has the time machine backup and it appears fine. But I can't restore. I have run disk utility on it also, no problems. I can't find backed up applications on it anywhere, just my docs and the application support files. Is that the problem? I thought I could do a real restore of everything, and I don't recall telling time machine don't back up apps. Any thoughts on what I can do?

Depending on where on the drive that partition is, you may be able to do that without a reformat. In Disk Utility, click the top line of the drive (with the make and size), then the Partition tab. That will show a diagram of the existing partitions.
You can delete any partition except the one you're running from, by clicking on it, then the minus sign at the bottom.
You can then drag the lower right corner of the partition above it down to fill the now-empty space, then click Apply.
When I did this, it never finished calculating the apps file, and allowed me to restore, or it appeared to, but it got stuck half way through.
I don't follow: did it finish calculating and start restoring, or did it "get stuck" while calculating?
I have run disk utility on it also, no problems.
I assume you mean +*Repair Disk?+* If not, do that.
I can't find backed up applications on it anywhere, just my docs and the application support files. Is that the problem?
How are you doing that? via the Finder or the TM "Star Wars" display?
I hate to say it, but it sounds like you excluded System files. If you select either /System or /Library, you get a prompt to exclude just the one selected, or all system files. If that's what happened, then OSX wasn't backed-up.
I thought I could do a real restore of everything, and I don't recall telling time machine don't back up apps.
Ordinarily, yes.
Any thoughts on what I can do?
I'm assuming your Mac is still working? If so, go to TM Preferences > Options and see what's listed in the +Do not back up+ box. If you see your system files there, that's what happened.
If so, select that line, then click the minus sign at the bottom to remove the exclusion. Run a backup (it will take a while, including a long "Preparing" phase), but should back up all your system folders.
But either way, if you decide to erase and reformat, I'd strongly advise making a secondary backup, preferably to a separate external HD. Many of us do that routinely (I learned long ago, the hard way of course, never to trust my backups to a single app or piece of hardware: no app is perfect; all hardware fails, sooner or later).
I use CarbonCopyCloner, others use the similar SuperDuper, and still others are in Kappy's post on Basic Backup, complete with links to the web sites of each product.
The advantage to a "clone" is, you can boot up from it and run normally (if a bit more slowly) to be sure everything is there and working, then clone back to your internal HD.

    - Next try the manual install method of:

Place the iPod in recovery mode after the firmware download is complete and then restore using the instructions in the article. Sometimes recovery mode timeouts and returns to disabled before the firmware download is complete.

  • Time machine corrupted sparsebundle? how to repair? time machine restore not working

On my macbook pro, after starting with Cmd-R, I erased the hard disk, re-installed Mavericks and I want to restore my back up with Time Machine. I select the NAS where the backup is, it sees the backup file but it says: "There is a problem with this backup and it can't be restored". I also copied the backup file (with extension sparsebundle) to another external hard disk and tried to use it from there but I have the same problem. With my iMac (as the laptop is not usable since I started it with cmd-R), when I double click on the backup file (ext sparsebundle), it mounts and I can actually see and access the files that are there. I do not understand why the restore is not working with the Time Machine. It seems the sparsebundle is corrupted. I tried these instructions: http://www.garth.org/archives/2011,08,27,169,fix-time-machine-sparsebundle-nas-b ased-backup-errors.html
But I am stuck at this step: tail -f /var/log/fsck_hfs.log

Nothing seems to happen even after a few hours (like 3 hours). The sparsebundle bakcup file is about 200 GB big. It does not seem to do anything as I do not notice any disk activity.
Could someone please advise how to do the restore with the Time Machine or how I can repair the backup file?

Well, if Time Machine is the only thing on that hard drive and there is only one partition, sooner or later, Time Machine will fill up the entire thing and you can't use it for anything else.
Now, you can start over, but that will mean that your Time machine backups will be wiped out. If that is what you want, it is a rather easy process easily accomplished in Disk Utility:
With hard drive connected, open Disk Utility (Applications -> Utilities). Highlight the Time Machine hard drive (the top entry for it). Click on the Partition tab. In the window, pick 2 partitions under the "volume scheme" and then slide the little thing at the bottom to adjust the size of each partition. Make sure the format is Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and, under options, click the GUID partition scheme. Name each one (i.e. "Time Machine" and "backups") and click "apply". Disk Utility will first erase the drive and then create 2 partitions (2 totally separate drives so to speak). You're done.....
You can then set up the one for Time Machine and the other to drag over whatever files you want.

  • ICloud restore not working after change of apple id

    Hello,
I had an apple account with [email protected] and everything including my icloud backup and itunes is tied to this account. i changed my apple id to [email protected] (not a new apple id) and now when i had to restore my phone, it first asked to log in into [email protected] which i could not log in since the all the passwords i tried is not working. so i skipped it and log in successfully using [email protected] and it restored all the settings and apps. Now my issue is, most of my pictures are not being restored and its been a week and it still hasn't downloaded even with wifi speeds over 25mbps.
    any ideas?
    Thanks
    kev

Hmm, there are a few prelims that may be going on.
It's completely possible that your old backup may not contain all of your photos. It's also possible that you just don't have Photos turned on under Settings > iCloud. Same on your old device that you're restoring from.
You can always call Apple Support and they can lookup your old and new Apple ID, and see if there are photos backed up.

  • Restore not working in OS4

When performing a restore itunes shows the following:
Choose a back up to restore. This will restore only contacts, calendars, text messages, and settings, not the iPhones firmware.
instead of having dates of my old restores now, I am only seeing restore attempts example.
    Ron's iPhone - Jun 24, 2010 12:34 PM
    Ron's iPhone - Jun 24, 2010 11:24 PM
    Ron's iPhone - Jun 24, 2010 10:15 PM
I do not see my original restores from 2008 and on. I believe it is possible that the file structure is different in OS 4 and not allowing us to see ontacts, calendars, text messages, and settings. I do not even have my password for locking the home screen anymore. I would bet if I could roll back to the previous OS I wouldn't have this problem. Is there anyway to do that?

  • Satellite Pro A300-1A8 Vista system restore not working

I wanted to use system restore due to attempting to reconfigure administrator rights, its somehow deleted all my shortcuts on my menu and messed about with a few things.
However when i try to use system restore (i have attempted to use it in safe mode, via cmd promp, both together and normal boot), yet all seem to stay hanging in the same green page where it reads something along the lines of 'system is initialising restore etc' (spending 45 mins on this page before i get fed up and shut down the computer). I have tried using different restore points but the same occurs. It like its not working at all.
Can anyone help with this please?
My laptop is a Satellite Pro A300-1A8.

    Hi
You mean the Vista tool which can be found in (Start button -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore) does not work and you cannot set back the Vista to the early time point?
Well, usually there is no much to do to restore the OS to the early time point you have to star the system restore tool and have to choose the restore point. Then everything should run automatically.
If this doesnt work then something is messed up as you said in your posting above somehow deleted all your shortcuts on my menu and messed about with a few things possibly the OS has been messed to.
Try to clean the OS using the free software for example CCLeaner. I use it too. Its great. Repair and clean the OS and check if its possible to use the system restore tool again.
I found also this MS page:

  • G580, Restore Not working

I bought a G580 last Spring and followed the directions to make a restore thumb drive, and have tried testing it with a blanck HD to verify that the thumb drives restore would work.  It doesn't.  I've tried storing the restore stuff twice to the thumb drives, but it just won't work.  Thumb drive is a 16GB high quality Sandisk unit.
This is infuriating, what if my hard drive did get hosed, the restore wouldn't have worked.  Why isn't it working, why won't you sell restore disks to consumers?
I tried on 2 different thumb drives, both 16 GB.  It boots off of the thumbs, but when I try to restore off of them, it can't says the file is not there.  Something is wrong with the restore process or the way the restore thumbs are making.  I want some restore disks and I should have to pay for them if your process doesn't work!

yeah, I'm having the same problem as I was trying to restore due to my issue with my DVD player.  Lenovo is about to lose a future customer.

  • System restore not working, even with recovery disks

I have a Touchsmart Tx2 1020us. I want to completely restore it to factory settings.
when i use the recovery manager it pops up saying that there isn't a recovery partition and to insert disk #1. i bought the recovery disk set from HP and put disk 1 in. it then says to click on next. when i click on next the computer just shuts itself down. it never restarts, just turns itself off.
i also tried using the "press f11 repeatedly at startup" method. after pressing f11 a ton of times my computer just begins this shrill beeping sound and will not stop until you stop pressing f11.
so basically i've tried every method on this page :http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&docname=c00809678#N554    with absolutely no results.
any ideas on how to get this stupid system restore to work?

    Hi,
Since you deleted your recovery partitions and your recovery disk set has issues you will need to purchase a set of recovery disks from HP or from an HP Partner. the cost is around $25.00 USD.
It is unfortunate, but when you deleted the recovery partitions you limited the options that were previously available to you.
Nonexistance or modification of the recovery partition is the reason that neither F11 from startup nor Recovery Manager from within Windows does not work.
    Best regards,

  • Restore not working for subscription on Newsstand

One of my subscriptions (Practical Fishkeeping) should have enabled me to download a new issue today. The cover page of the issue is there but downloading did not work. So I deleted the app, closed both our iPads, and then downloaded the app again from the App Store. When I tried to restore my previous issues the restore started but then stopped. I have tried this several times on both iPads. Additionally I still cannot download the new issue. My subscription runs until October of this year. Can anyone advise what I should do? Thank you.

    Hello blights,
I would be concerned too if my magazine subscription was not downloading.  I found a couple of resources that might help with downloading this purchase.
First, I recommend checking to see if the download was interrupted.  You can use the steps in the section titled "If your download was interrupted using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch" in the following article:
iTunes: How to resume interrupted iTunes Store downloads
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1725
If you are still not able to download Practical Fishkeeping, I recommend reporting this issue to the iTunes Store support team:

  • Iphone 4s reboot/apple logo problem - restore not working

My iphone 4s is stuck in the reboot cycle. The apple logo appears for 3/4 seconds, dissapears and the returns. it does this constantly.
I have already put the phone into recovery mode and tried to restore twice. about 15 mins from the end of the restore process the flashing apple logo reappears and that is the end of that.
Can anyone help? i dont mind losing data just would like the phone to work again.
    Thanks
    Chris

Turn your device off and connect your cable to the computer, but not the device just yet. Start up iTunes. Now, hold down the home button on your device and plug it in to the cable - don't let go of the button until iTunes tells you it's detected a device in recovery mode. Now you can restore to factory settings.
If this procedure does not work, make an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar to have it evaluated by the techs there.

  • Download restoring not worked

When I download multiple files from the Internet.
Why is the download list is cleared when the program crashes.
Downloading the files remain in between and they can not continue.
Why is the download list is not built on a refund or restoring?
Un-downloaded files may be many and the majority of them is broken.
This is a big problem for all firefox versions.

in firefox features site say in Download Manager
The resume function also works if your system crashes or is forced to restart. The manager shows your download progress and lets you search your files by name or the Web address where the download came from.
    This not worked to all.
Why is the download list/manager is cleared when the program crashes?
is this a bug or what?
Downloading the files remain in between and they can not continue.
i dont want to use external download manager.

  • [SOLVED] HDMI audio - "alsactl restore" not working

I can't seem to get audio through HDMI working properly.
I was able to get it a few weeks ago, on Debian Jessie by doing the following:
Creating ~/.asoundrc with the following contents:
    pcm.!default {
    type hw
    card 0
    device 3
    running "alsactl restore"
    I got this from https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=132641
When I run "alsactl restore" now, on Arch, I get the following output:
alsactl: state_lock:114: file /var/lib/alsa/asound.state lock error: File exists
alsactl: load_state:1677: Cannot open /var/lib/alsa/asound.state for reading: File exists

Hardware is initialized using a generic method
Audio continues playing on my laptop speakers, not on my TV.
I tried renaming "/var/lib/alsa/asound.state" and then running "alsactl restore", but I got the same error (even though the file no longer exists!).
Running "aplay -D plughw:0,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav" does give me sound on my TV speakers through HDMI.
    Any ideas?

What exactly are you trying to achieve? Do you want to switch between laptop speakers and hdmi? Type hw is not recommended and you are using it directly, which means if the format does not match it will not accept it, s a plug between would make sense.
Alsa wiki wrote:Simply setting a type hw as default card is equivalent to addressing hardware directly, which leaves the device unavailable to other applications. This method is only recommended if it is a part of a more sophisticated setup ~/.asoundrc or if user deliberately wants to address sound card directly (digital output through eic958 or dedicated music server for example).
You could send sound two both cards and then toggle mute between them. See multi plugin for this. It could be problematic though.
I also fail to see what 'alsactl restore' is supposed to achieve here, since it restores the previous settings for ~a[lsa]mixer, you would have to store the appropriate settings first with 'alsactl store' [in multiple files]. Switching between configurations should be easier.

  • Please Help! Restoration Not Working

Hi, all of the songs on my iPod mini just vanished so I tried to restore my iPod (I have Windows XP) following the instructions on
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983#Two
This is fine until after Step 6 but after that nothing happens. My iTunes no longer appears to recognize my iPod as it doesn't show up with "Cat's iPod" when it is connected. Also when my iPod is connected it always has the "do not disconnect" message on it even though it is not updating.
Please help because I have no idea what to do. I've tried everything that I can think of but nothing seems to help.

    Hi
I also battled for hours with restoration, until I tried it on another computer: It worked! It could have been the third party access I had to the computer, or something else, but the moral of the story is, to end your frustration by switching to another PC. I also thought my computer did not recognize my Ipod mini: Make sure your Itunes is closed, then attach Ipod mini to the USB port. It sometimes takes up to 5-10 minutes for it to list your Ipod under source: I was too hasty if it did not list it immediately, and jumped to the conclusion that it did not recognize my Ipod Mini. So patience might help?

The restore function on my N97 mini seems not to work. I've setup my N97 to daily backup @ 06:00 due to an software error in the PC Suite I've lost all my messages. Yet when I restore the message the mailbox stays empty.
How do I successfully restore the messages on my N97mini?

Yes for sure, most of us did backups & restored the messages successfully taking into account the backup process itself was successful. You have to make sure that you select the same memory, whether "c" or "e", when you backup & restore. If you select "e" as the memory of storing messages, you had to backup mass memory, & restore mass memory to have your messages back.
