Restore of OSX

iMac 2006 20 inch new hdd just installed - unable to initialise internet recovery of OSX
Must I purchase a OSX Boot DVD?
It is a dumb machinen but it will boot to a Windows Install disc and load it.  HDD been reformatted by Apple Genius since but she was unable to install Snow Leopard or OS10.4 blaming it on incompatible RAM which was 6400 fitted as an upgrade a year ago eith no operational problems.  Now it has its original 2x512Mb cards of 5300 RAM.
What do I do next?
Very frustrated.

Your model is too old for Internet Recovery. You must reinstall at least Snow Leopard 10.6.8 from which you can then upgrade further if you wish.
Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
     1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
     2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
     3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
     4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

Hello.. I am getting a screen when i turn my laptop on startup says OSX utilities....restore, reinstall osx  or disk utility....what does this mean?

Hi, that sounds like it's booting from a Restore partition, but that is only for 10.7 & up, you list 10.6.8 though.
Anyway, hold alt key at bootup, what boot choices are shown?

  • Mac Crash, Time Machine won't restore different osx?

    Hey All,
Yesterday my beloved Mac decided to die in the *** after an OSX update, it was running fine before I put in the dreaded update.
I tired everything possible to get the Mac going again to no avail, so ended up having to put in the origional disk (osx 10.5.6), this worked a treat and got the old girl going again, however when I instructed it to use the time machine to restore, it ran for probably about 5hrs then said it couldn't be performed as the time machine was running a different OSX.
Iv tired to restore it going into the desktop, opening time cap and trying to restore from there - I get the same issue.
Also tired to go into the finder, time machine, data, imac_0023dfa.sparse and selected that and got the same issue - OSX
I have no idea what to do next?
Can I update to 10.6.3 without doing all of the inbetween updates (this is what time was running on)
Driving to an apple store, is a 5 day drive or a 6hr flight... so not really an option.
    Please help
Thanks in advance for any advice

Since you have both machines connected why don't you use Migration Assistant to transfer your Home folder? Or you can simply drag your documents from the old computer's connected hard drive.
I hope you realize that Migration Assistant will not transfer your Home folder if you have a new Home folder with the same name. Instead it will create a whole new Home folder with a different name. Have you checked to see if you have two user folders located in your /Users/ folder?

  • Help please! Need to restore my OSX Midi Network driver!

Hello friends, this is the first time i write you guys here.
But heck, i've solved hundreds of problems just reading these boards for some years now!
So yeah, i have been a Touchdaw user for some months and everything went great until
a couple days ago it broke/froze up, even crashing my audio midi setup issue that i managed
to fix (thanks to you guys) by deleting some plist around.
But when i came back today, to set everything up again, i found that there's no NETWORK
icon on the audiomidi setup anymore.
Thing is i can't actually find a single post about this issue anywhere on the web
Someone said that deleting the "com.apple.midi.netsetup" file would restore everything
but..bingo, there's no such file where i believe it used to exist before the crash.
My guess is i need to restore this file somehow, or install a "midi network driver"??
I seriously need this to work again, all my midi instruments are in another room, now i can't
record as comfortable as it used to be with  the wireless network and it's making me lose a bunch of time!
    2012 Mac Pro 10.7.5 OSX
I hope someone can help me! — Thanks in advance!!
    Please excuse my english,
    Jesús

    Hello Cheeky,
Unfortunately, i haven't found info about this issue and i had to move a couple keyboards into the control room.
I guess i'll have to reinstall my OS, but there's a lot of things that could go wrong...:( i don't know.
Everything would be cute again if the network thingy appeared :'(

  • Ipod photo won't restore in OSX

I've tried the five "r's", but the ipod updater won't recognize the ipod in order to restore. This ipod sync'd just fine a few weeks ago. I have reinstalled itunes and ipod software, still no go.
    Any ideas?

This is the same issue that I have. I believe it has something to do with transfering files onto your iPod during the same connection that you've used to automatically update your iTunes songs and playlists within iTunes. I've heard that even with "enable disk use" activated in your prefs, you still need to disconnect and reconnect in order to properly copy files onto your iPod. That also means switching your prefs to "automatically update playlists and songs" for when you connect for your iPod updates and then setting it to "manually update your playlists and songs" + "enable disk use" for when you want to use your iPod as a file transfer device.
Have your iPods all started acting up like this around the same time that you began copying files to your iPod? I would like to know what's causing this. This is second time (on 2 iPods!) that this has happened to me! I've never been able to trouble shoot it myself. I've always had to go back to the Applestore for a replacement.

  • IPod Nano 3rd gen 8GB does not show music library, can't restore in osx.3.9

I have two problems: Although, I can see mu iPod's music library when I plug in it into my ancient laptop (iBook G4 10.3.9), the library doesn't display on the iPod once it's disconnected, meaning I can't play any songs on the iPod proper). I've done everything that the Apple website recommends for troubleshooting my Nani 3rd generation, including attempting to reset it repeatedly. I've now saved the songs elsewhere, and I'm prepared to restore it, but I can't seem to find a way to reset it in iTunes 4 (apparently the latest version of iTunes that will work on this computer). Am I missing something? What should I do? Any help would be much appreciated.
    Best,
    Diane

    Hey there,
If your iPod is a 3rd generation nano, it will not work with anything below 10.4 as outlined in this Apple support document. That could be the underlying problem. Hope this helped.

  • Restoring Mac OSX & Upgrade HELP

    Dear Friends,
I have a project coming up, as soon as Snow Leopard is released. I want to clean install OSX on my Mac Pro. Here are the questions:
I have iTunes library on HD #2, will that mess things up for me if I don't back up my iTunes on DVD before the clean install?
I have Vista Ultimate on HD #4. Will a clean install mess up my bootcamp Vista?
Time Machine is on HD #3, but I think I'll just format it if the clean install goes as planned.
    YOUR ADVICE IS APPRECIATED.

Get back on your Paxil and anti-anxiety meds. You have months to fret. And for you, buy the full install package; redundant backups.
Normally if you don't take precautions and leave behind your umbrella it is sure to rain.
One piece of advice - start using SuperDuper and take a look at purchase of Drive Genius 2 ($59). I would never ever rely on TimeMachine; I want bootable backups as well.
Pull Windows drive if you are worried (Windows 7 RC has proven to me to be better than Vista SP2 was or is).
DVDs are nice, but invest in two or more backup hard drives - you are more likely to use and doesn't take as long (the first iTunes backup run to DVD does take time).

  • Restoring my OSx from an external DVD unit....

Hi guys, i got an intel based IMAC and its DVD drive is not working anymore.
I need to reinstall the operating system, I've been trying with an external DVD drive (via USB), but when the installer ask me to restart the system to begin the process, it boots like there was restarting normally.
I wonder if there is some kind of keyboard function or something that help me out to boot the Installation DVD from the external Drive (Sony external DVD).
Every comment will be very helpful!!

    Hello Rikaruz
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
With the drive connected and your install disk in the drive, try holding the Option key while restarting the iMac! The iMac should startup in the startup Manager and hopefully give you the option to startup in either the Macintosh HD or the Install Disk! There may not be any need to reinstall the OS X, once your booted from the Install Disk, go up to the menu bar and select Disk Utility and try to repair the Macintosh HD.

  • Restore mail from time machine

    Help needed please!
I have recently restored Lion OSX but in doing so my mailboxes have disappeared.  I have Time Machine so tried to enter it but the restore points only go back to the date I restored Lion.  I can see other backups in the route of Time Capsule which suggests that previous backup files are available but I cannot access them from Time Machine.
    Any suggestions please?
    Thanks
    Steve

Sometime the Library folder are hidden and you cannot see it.
    Try this:
Press and hold down the Option key.
Pull down the Go menu in Finder.
    Select Library.
    You can now release Option.
You should then be able to find the Mail folder there.

  • How do you install OS 9 or Classic with OSX 10.21??

I have never used Classic - went from OS-9 to OSX.
I am trying to get a dual-usb IBook to run OS-9 so I can get the data off my old Jaz disks. The Jaz drive will run on UUSB only with OS-9. To run it on OSX 10.2  (which came with this model) requires a firewire adapter which I don't have.
I have a 9.1 install disk that is white with a big 9 on it.
I have a set of 3 gray disks labeled IBook Software Restore Mac OSX and Mac OS 9 ver. 9.2.2
I have a gray disk IBook Mac OSX ver. 10.21 Disk 1.
I have a CD-R disk (copy, not original) labeled OS 9.2.2 Drag Install.
The IBook itself has OSX ver. 10.2.1 installed and the pieces I dragged from the OS 9.2.2 Drag Install disk.
All I want is to get OS 9 to run so I can hook up my Jaz drive to a USB port. I don't know if Classic will work or not - Iomega says you need OS 9 for USB and firewire with the adapter for OSX.
    Any help appreciated!

Install 9.2.2 from the grey disk that came with the iBook.

  • HT201250 I use Snow Leopard and tried restore my Macbook pro using Time Machine.

After waiting a considerable time for Time Machine to restore my whole system, applications and files I had problems in that my Macbook Pro would not restart. The Apple logo appeared but then the screen scrolled down and a lot of letters, numbers and symbols appeared - not making any sense, and a box appeared telling me to restart holding down the on button. This I did. However it kept on repeating. In the end I had to reinstall the whole lot. Fortunately I had backed up all my files. I cannot use some of the programs I have because I cannot retrieve them. I do not have a disk with them on to reload because I downloaded them from the net and they are old progs and still did what I wanted. A lot of files I have saved do not open now without the old system and apps. Can anyone come up with an idea?

    ds store wrote:
Ah that's good to hear, does this still work if TimeMachine updates to reflect the 10.7 drive?
There is no special update.  After installing Lion, Time Machine will do a normal "incremental" backup, of the stuff that's new or changed.  That will be relatively large and lengthy, of course, since OSX and the default Apple apps will all be backed-up.
But there's nothing else different about the TM drive. It stil contains all the past backups, including older versions of OSX.
In other words if a user upgrades to 10.7 and doesn't like it after a few days/weeks, has TM connected and it updated to relfect 10.7, can the user c boot off the 10.6 disk erase and restore 10.6 from the TM drive?
Yes, except you don't have to erase.
You just boot from the Snow Leopard Install disc and do a full system restore.  That includes erasing the destination, so it doesn't matter what's on it.  Then everything on the backup is restored, including OSX, apps, users, data, settings, etc., just as it was at the time of the backup selected.
See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14, especially step (g).  The sample is a bit fuzzy -- it's a photo, since you can't screenprint there, but note that the last two backups were made on Snow Leopard:
Once that's done, and the system restarts, you can use the "Star Wars" display to restore selected items from later (ie, Lion) backups, but of course in some cases (Mail for one), the Snow Leopard apps won't work with the Lion-formatted files.

  • Restoring Entire System

My four-year-old hard drive (250gig) crashed.  I have purchased and installed a Seagate Momentus Hybrid (750gig).  I have partitioned it for the "Macintosh HD."  I have booted from a USB flash drive with OSX Lion on it.
My question is, do I need to reinstall the OSX on the drive before I restore from my Time Machine backup, or do I simply select my backup for restoring?  In other words, will the restore also restore the OSX operating system?
    Thanks for your input.

Unless you told Time Machine not to back up the Mac OS X system, it'll be restored.
