Restore old fce files

Some years ago I used Final Cut Express (3.5.1) for video editing. For some reasons (too complicated, no further support from Apple?) I went back to iMovie and recently to Adobe Premiere. Now I have the problem that old files in fce format do not open anymore and  When I try the system askes for licence-data, which I don't have anymore after all those years. Is there a way to restore or convert these files to mp4 or any other format that can be handled by iMovie and/or Adobe Premiere? Also I am surpised that there is an acive FCE community, I thought Apple stopped supporting the application???

Hello, and welcome to the FCE Forum.   Apple Discussions are supported by users (volunteers) just like you.  This is not the Apple Support Organization.
While FCE was in fact discontinued back in June 2011, there are still many users making good use of the program.
When you say "files in fce format" exactly what do you mean?  Do you mean your FCE projects, or video clips you imported into FCE or finished videos you exported from FCE?   The projects themselves (files ending in .fcp) cannot be used by iMovie or other applications except for the (also discontinued) Final Cut Pro/Studio.
However ...
Video clips that you imported into FCE are all QuickTime (QT) files and may be used by iMovie, QuickTime, Final Cut Pro X and  other editing apps that support QT/DV and-or QT/AIC.  Clips that you imported into FCE reside on your hard disk - they are not "inside" FCE.  As long as you still have the clip files you can reuse them.
Finished video that you exported from FCE may be different file types depending on how you exported your videos.  If they are self-contained QuickTime files then you can reuse them the same as clips you originally imported into FCE.  If you exported video as MPEG4 or H.264 (the most common non-QT export types), those files should be usable in iMovie, Final Cut Pro X and other editing apps.

  • Restoring old 'domain' file?

How did you restore the original 'domain' file?
My 'domain' file was overwritten by iWeb 2.0, and I can't open it anymore because iWeb 2.0 crashes and iWeb 1.1.2 won't touch it.
Any suggestions how I can get it back?
I went back to iWeb 1.1.2 until the 'fix' arrives.

dreamery post had me look in username>Application Support>iWeb and there I found my old iWeb "Domain." It was untouched.
I am not completely updated to iWeb 08 (2.0)!!!!
Finding the "Domain" was the key. I thought it lost forever.
The first thing I did was make a copy of the Domain (I duplicated it and moved it to a new location).
Then I double clicked on Domain and it opened iWeb 08, advised me it had to update for the version of iWeb. I agreed and in a few minutes, waiting while the progress bar moved to completion, wondering the whole time if I had done something stupid and lost my last chance, iWeb 08 had ALL my old pages displayed JUST LIKE it was the old iWeb! Yippee!!!
    I am soooo happy.
    Hope this works for others.

  • Using Pacifist and OSX 10.6.4 Combo updater to restore old CUPS file

I am planning to update to 10.6.5, but am anticipating printing problems with Adobe programs (after reading posts on this discussion board and at MacFixit). I have heard one solution (after updating to 10.6.5) is to replace the new pstops filter in the CUPS system with the old one in 10.6.4 by using Pacifist to extract the old filter from the 10.6.4 Combo updater. When you go to the Combo updater page, there seem to be 2 ways to download it, one from the main page, but then there is another page where it offers to download a different kind of package for use with multiple installations, etc.. Which one should I download? I just want to have the installer package sitting on my desktop so I can extract the pstops filter from it; I don't want it to go ahead on its own and reinstall 10.6.4. Also does anyone have any other advice on using Pacifist to extract the pstops filter? Thank you.

Thanks, Kappy. I did upgrade to 10.6.5 and decided to go ahead and extract the CUPS file from the 10.6.4 updater using Pacifist. The file was indeed in the 10.6.4 combo updater, which I had no trouble downloading (with your reassurance), although it took quite a while to download. I actually used instructions given by MacFixit (which had alerted me to the printing problem in the first place) to do the extraction. All now seems to be working fine with printing in 10.6.5.

  • Restore old .iChat files without chat.db File

Is this possible? I have years of iChat's backed up but can't seem to restore them. I've been scouring the internet and now see I needed the chat.db file which I don't have.
If anyone can help me if really appreciate it. I'm on OSX Mavericks

    Hi,
    You need two places.
~/Library/Messages is where the chat.db items (plural) are that fill in the "history" when you start chatting to an iMessages contact.
This will happen irrespective if you have Saved Chats.
The other place in Mavericks is ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.ichat/Data/Library/Messages/Archive
At the moment you upgrade to Mavericks  then your Saved Chats  are moved from ~/Library/Messages to this new place.
You will notice that the container sort of lists the same folder layout but it is just deeper in the folder stack.
You can access this User's Library by holding down the ALT key whilst using the Finder > Go Menu and then selecting the Library that appears.
Some people report that if you take all the Contents out of the Container... .../Archive and place it on the Desktop then restart Messages you can then replace the contents and restart Messages again and it seems to then "See" the Saved Chats properly.

My daughter's iPhone 3gs has just been replaced by Apple. When she tried to restore her backup files she was told to upgrade to itunes 10, but she can't because her Macbook is too old to run it. What do we need to do to get all her stuff onto the new phone?

Here's what I'd do, go back to the Apple store, take the phone & computer. Ask the geniuses how to fix this since they replaced the phone. You never know, they may just update the computer for free...its happened before...can't gurantee it will happen for you, but worth a try.
Otherwise, you're looking at purchasing a retail copy of Leopard, however if her computer can handle Snow Leopard you can purchase the $29 upgrade disk & install a full copy of SL.

  • How can I delete a corrupted old sessionstore file (it's affecting my restore session feature)?

On 2/29/12, Windows reported that sessionstore-38.js was corruput and unreadable and requested I run CHKDSK. I run it but this file was not deleted. Also, it has resulted in my Firefox session restores to be "frozen" (same windows and tabs) to back on 2/29 when this bad file situation started on 2/29/12. I've even tried using new sessions but Firefox constantly reverts back to the old set of windows and tabs from 2/29 whenever the session drops. Help me please!!!

Numbers in sessionstore file names can indicate that Firefox had a problem replacing your old session file with a new one.
The quickest way to open your profile folder is
Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Open Containing Folder" button
Once the folder is open, you might need to close Firefox before proceeding.
Please read the solution from cor-el in this thread before deleting any files: [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/901885 session restore issues | Firefox Support Forum | Firefox Help].

  • Using RMAN, how do you restore from an old backup file?

    HI,
I use Oracle 9i on Solaris.
I'm currently doing incremental level 0 hot backups every night using RMAN in NOCATALOG mode. The controlfile is backed up with the database. I back it up to a file (e.g. "level0_20041225.dmp"). After I back it up, it's backed up to tape using Veritas. Before doing a backup, I delete the old one first.
I need to restore a copy of the database backup that was taken a month ago. This file is on tape. How do I go about it using RMAN? The documentation is not too clear as it talks more about Restoring the control file and the latest copy of the database.
How do you restore an old copy of the database from a database file?
    Pls advise
    Thanks

You can recover to the last committed transaction,
provided you have the current controlfile, archived
logs since the backup and the current online logs.
Here's the procedure in a nutshell:
    a) Restore datafiles from tape.
    b) Recover database using restored files + current
controlfiles and archived/online logs. RMAN will prompt
you for the logs it needs for recovery.
You can also perform this type of recovery using a
backup controlfile. In this case you would still need
all logs as above. After recovery, you would have to
open the database with RESETLOGS because you are using
    a backup controlfile.
If you don't want/need to recover up to the last
committed transaction, you use a backup controlfile and
perform incomplete recovery (time or change based). This
simply means that you stop the application of redo at
the time or SCN of your choice.
Most of the scenarios of interest are documented in
    the following book:

  • Trying to restore old GarageBand projects, some will, some won't?

I am on OS X 10.6.8, 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, and before the last system update (to 10.6.8) I was running Time Machine on an outboard Samsung drive, and had an Iomega external drive to which I had moved my GarageBand folder (and its pointer) and all my projects.  With the update to 10.6.8, my Iomega drive was suddenly no longer accessible.  I read a note on the forum that said Firewire support was dropped with 10.6.8, so I reconnected the drive with USB, but still was unable to access.  I had the bright idea to restore my GarageBand projects from Time Machine, from before I had moved them to the outboard drive.  I can see the projects when I do a search for "garage" on my Time Machine backups, but have only been able to restore a handful of them.  The icon for some of the project files is a dark grey horizontal rectangle (the ones that =did= restore) then there are others that have a light grey horizontal rectangle as their file icon, and others that have the little tan guitar as their icons.  I'm figuring these may be sets of projects from the different versions of GarageBand that have lived under OS X in its various incarnations.  Whenever I select any project files other than the handful of dark-grey-rectangle files, and click "restore" in Time Machine, after asking me to select a target folder (which does exist on my Mac) I get a pop-up message that has "Copy" in the header for the pop-up, and says:
"The volume has the wrong case sensitivity for a backup."
Please help me understand (a) what that error message means, it sounds like the Time Machine program is trying to improperly create a backup on my main HD, but all I want to do is copy those files to my Mac, (b) how I can get my files out of Time Machine and back onto my main HD, and (c) if I can convert them to the current GarageBand format once I get them on my machine.
I also tried to restore from Time Machine the .mp3 files that were created from my GarageBand projects, but after selecting a group of those from a Time Machine search, I got the same message about "wrong case sensitivity for a backup"...  If I try to play them from my iTunes, where I had put them after creating the .mp3's in GarageBand, it gives me a message that the underlying file isn't present, so it can't play the song, which is why I'm trying to get those GarageBand files over from Time Machine.  If I had only not updated to 10.6.8, I think all would have been well.
Something doesn't look quite right.  Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated.  I'm a songwriter and my old songs are now trapped in Time Machine!  I'm very nervous that I might accidentally delete them instead of rescuing them.

Unfortunately, no.  The error message I'm getting, about the volume not having the right case sensitivity for a backup, seems to be an inappropriate message, at least to my thinking.  I am only trying to restore some old files.  Seems like it would not have any problem.  And the first five I restored came back just fine, I chose "choose location" and just let them come into the Applications folder, then I moved them to a separate folder on the desktop just so I could see them all together.  When I went back to gather some more files, I started getting that "case sensitivity for a backup" message, and now I get it every time, even if I try to restore the same files that I already restored, to another folder of course.
It's like Time Machine thinks I'm making another backup, when all I'm trying to do is restore a few GarageBand .band files.
I played around with it some more, trying to restore a single file to an empty folder on my desktop, trying to restore to a thumb drive (got a "volume is not formatted properly" error, even though the drive already had some Quickbooks files on it I copied from my current machine successfully), and nothing I try is working.
Do I dare restart my computer and see if that clears something up?  Like I said before, I fear I will end up deleting my song files, or destroying access to my outboard Time Machine backup disk.  The original song files were on an Iomega external disk that my Mac cannot access anymore, it may be crashed, I will have to take it to the Genius bar to have someone look at it.  But it is frustrating to see those files in my Time Machine backups and not be able to get them back on my main disk!!!!!  Thanks for the help you gave, but there was nothing in there that pertained to this particular problem.  Any other suggestions?  Should I "eject" my Time Machine external disk and then restart the computer and reattach the Time Machine disk?  Will that protect those files?
Sorry to be so full of questions. I really just need help getting these files off the Time Machine.  Sounds so simple on the tutorial, but it is just not happening here.  Thanks again, please, any other suggestions please send them on.

  • How to I restore missing StickiesDatabase file from Time Machine?

I have looked all over for a solution to this. Basically, I am trying to restore a stickiesdatabase file from a Time Machine backup. I put in a new HD and am slowly pulling files over in pieces. The thing is, the backup that had the stickies I want to restore did not seem to back that file up. I navigated to user/library to find StickiesDatabase, and it is not there, even though I went into the terminal and unhid invisible folders and files (other greyed out invisibles showed up so I know it worked). But here's the weird thing, when looking on my current hard drive, I could find that file for my new, empty stickies just fine. Also, I went further to a Time Machine backup from a year ago, and I found the stickiesdatabase file in the library as well. It's like these last two backups I did that had the stickies I want did not include that file in the backup. Any thoughts? Am I doomed? Oh, and I am currently on Mavericks and the backup in question was also Mavericks. And I have a 2008 Macbook Pro if that info is helpful.

There is another, huge thread on TM backups on this forum and exactly this issue has come up. Sadly, no one has a perfect answer. I do not have a spare drive available to test this myself, but I would try something along these lines.
-- Ask TM to restore your full Library and the Masters, if Referenced. I believe that TM will give you the option to not overwriting your current Library, but be careful. However you do, stick this "Recovery Library" out somewhere. (Yes, this is gonna take some time, run it overnight.)
-- Open "Recovery" with Aperture and select the Project(s) that contain the images you want. Export these "Projects as New Library."  (Don't export as either Versions or Masters.) I would select the box "Consolidate Masters" and I would probably discard the Previews. Stick this somewhere.
-- Now open "Original Library" and import the "Library" that you exported back into your Original Library as something like "Stupid Lost Project."
-- You should now have a Project full of adjusted, and adjustable images. (N.B. this is basically the technique I use with my laptop. I shoot, load into AP3 on the laptop, noodle, and then export/import into AP3 on the MacPro when I get home.)
-- Clean up. (Delete "Recovery", convert the recovered Project back to Referenced Masters, if you wish, etc.)
One good argument for never throwing those old USB drives away.
I have missed some of the details in the process, so be careful, but I believe that this will work until Apple lets us run Aperture inside Time Machine.
    Best wishes.

  • Lightroom - how to restore backed up files (not Lightroom catalogue) from one external drive to another?

How to restore backed up files (not lightroom catalogue) from one external drive to another.
I recently backuped my photo files from one external drive to another. The backup (carbon copy cloner) pointed to some corrupt files on the original drive.
I have deleted those files and am finding good copies of them  in Time Machine backups.
I want to get rid of the original external drive; use the recent backup as my main external and then back it up onto a brand new drive.
What I am not sure about is how to point lightroom to the backups so it knows to look on the new drive instead of the old drive and all those exclamation marks and question marks go away.
There are close to 60,000 images in numerous folders all with one 'parent folder.'
My best guess is from Lightroom Help - Create and Manage Folders -  Locate Missing Folders
Can I point to the one parent folder and all the subfolders will come back?
Is this the process to recover files into lightroom and will there be a problem with so many photos?

  • I need to access old MacDraw files

I kept my old Pismo PowerBook in order to be able to run OS 9.2 and old applications that were not brought on to the OSX platform.
When I went to open some old MacDraw files I discovered that somehow the translator for MacDraw no longer was available to ClarisDraw or ClarisImpact.
Does anyone out there have a copy of the translators, or can tell me where/how to get hold of it. I do not recall if ClarisDraw was distributed with OS 9.2. If so, I somewhere have the CD's and could reinstall or repair the programs. Can anyone tell me how CLarisDraw and Imppact was distributed?

The Claris (boxed) programs (MacWrite, MacDraw, MacPaint, etc.) shipped with floppy disk installers and a spiral-bound user manual.  In the early to mid-90s, they were combined into the single program "ClarisWorks," which was included as bundled software (on the OS restore disk) with the Performas running OS 7.5, sold for home or educational use.  The program included built-in translators, to read files created by the older versions of its component programs.  With version 5, ClarisWorks was re-named "AppleWorks."  You can download/install the final version of AppleWorks 6.2.9 (available here), but I seem to recall (from another Forum topic about a year ago) that some of the older translators were no longer included with the newest/final release of the program.  Because the Claris Corporation sold boxed, retail versions of the program, you should check eBay for ClarisWorks 4 on CD (ClarisWorks 3 may run on OS 9.2 - I haven't tried it).  I'm suggesting version 4, because it may have translators that weren't included with version 5 - but I don't know that for sure.  Apple's support page for AppleWorks can be found here.

  • Restoring backed-up files to different TX-2000

I purchased a new Vista TX-2000 in 2008, which is now having motherboard problems.  It is backed-up with the "Backup and Restore Center" that came with Vista.  I depend daily on the unit for my business and have been told by HP Help that I may loose the hard drive files when the MB is replaced.  To cover the possibility, I have purchased a used TX-2000 from E-Bay.  It is in good shape and appears to be vintage 2007, with a smaller size hard drive (120MB vs. 250MB).  The failing unit has two partitions, created originally by HP.  The E-Bay machine was third-party re-formatted with a single partition, with no Recovery files, nor included the original Restore CDs.  Both machines have Vista, SP2.
Other details:  HP Help says there are no Recovery CDs available for the E-Bay machine.  There is adequate room on the E-bay machine for restoration of the files.
    Questions:
    1)  Can I restore my backup from the failing machine to  the E-Bay machine?
    2)  Do I need the drives on both machines to be identical, both size and partitioning?
    3)  Can I just physically transfer the drive from the failing machine to the E-bay machine or is there an embedded number that has to match the drive boot record (or whatever it's called nowadays)?  Can I harm the drive by trying or will Vista mark the drive in some way to make it unusable with the original machine?
Just for completeness, I have spoken to HP Help about this a half-dozen times and got a different answer each time.  They appear now to be no more than a message center and their "experts" just read off their monitors whatever a database search says.  Definitely HP Help is no longer technically knowledgeable.

I believe that Apple's "Backup" application uses a special storage scheme that normaly requires Apple Backup to restore the backup items. There may be a problem, though, because your screenshot shows the backup items as ordinary folders. I don't use Backup any more, but I have some old storage items made with Backup 3, and my full and incremental backup items look like single files in Finder. They actually are packages, "special" folders with the same internal structure as the one you posted, but which look like single files in Finder. Maybe you used an earlier version of Backup that creates folders instead of package files.
I don't know if Backup 3 will be able to open and use the "normal-looking" folders that you do have, but it's worth a try. If you don't have Backup 3 on your current Leopard installation, you can download it at
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL184
You need a MobileMe subscription to make new backups, but I think you can restore old backups even without a subscription. There is a Help menu in Backup 3 which includes instructions on how to restore things when you no longer have the backup plan used to make the backups. You would normally use Backup 3 to open the most recent IncrementalBackup file if there is one, otherwise the FullBackup file. In your situation I would try to open the folder with those names, not the folder contents.
If this doesn't work try double-clicking the "backup.sparseimage" files in the Folder>Contents>Contents subfolders. If the disk image mounts, look inside the mounted disk for your stuff and drag the contents back to your internal HD. Don't try to restore "settings", just datafiles.
