Restore old iMessage chat contents after OS X reinstall?

Last night I had to do a wipe of my MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion. At the end of the installer I chose to migrate all my old apps/data/settings back onto the machine from a recent Time Machine backup. Everything transferred over correctly with the exception of all  my iMessage threads. When you open the Messages app, all the recently chatted with friends show up on the left hand sidebar, but when you click on one, the thread contents are blank. Is there any way to manually reimport all of the old iMessage chat contents into my currently installation?
I still have all of my old iMessage data on my Time Machine backup under the folder "~/Library/Messages" folder. I tried copying over the new version of this folder with the old version stored on the Time Machine backup, but the reimport didn't seem to take so I reverted back.
Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

HI,
I would have said that the ~/Library/Messages folder was the thing to copy back.
As you "owned" the original I would have thought there would be no Ownership  issues.
You would need the Archive folder (All Old Chats if you were saving them) and the Chat.db items as these hold the iMessages chats and the attachments if there are any.
Two possible issues
Creating an iCloud ID with an older Apple ID and using a different name in Messages to register for iMessages
Although iCloud web site will let you login with either the originating Apple ID or the created @me.com name iMessages registers only one of these rather than the "whole Account".  (Obviously one can become an alias in Messages for the iMessages account)
The second is related as it is which ID is then used to Login in System Preferences > iCloud.
This then passes over to Mail, Contacts and Calendars and can be active for Messages.

  • URGENT Help Restoring Old Mac OS FIles After Install and No Backup

Have an older MacBook that was on Mac OS 10.5.?. A friend of mine just did an install of Snow Leopard but did not back up any of the files. He says it was a clean install.
Is there any way I might be able to restore any of the files that used to be on my system before the clean upgrade to 10.6? I am particularly concerned with iPhoto. My music is all on my iPod that I can copy off, and apps I have backups of.
    Thanks

If your friend did an Erase & Install, without Secure-Erasing them, then (most of) your files are still on the hard drive, but you'll have to use one of these:

  • HT3529 I have lost all data on my iphone and the back-up is too old. How can I restore iMessage chats on my iPhone 4? I have all the chats on my Mac, but there seems to be no sync function from Mac to iphone. Please advice.

    Hi,
I have lost all data on my iphone by mistake. I needed to restore the phone and I didnt realize my back-up was 1yr old, and now the phone is restored and I've got a year old contact list and iMessage chat history. Luckily my iMessage on the Mac is still valid and has all the chat history. My question is how can I restore iMessage chats on my iPhone 4 from my Mac? I have all the chat history on my Mac, but there seems to be no sync function from Mac to iphone. Please advice.

If things seem to be going haywire with your phone, it seems that it MAY be a software issue.
Now, that being said, that does not necessarily mean that it is a virus. Software issues do happen sometimes. It is probably just coincidence.
What you need to do is restore the device using iTunes. This will fix any software issues. After you have done this, you can restore from an iCloud backup.
iCloud does not back up the actual software, so no, the "virus" would not have gotten into the backups.
The link below provides steps on restoring your device using iTunes as well as how to restore from an iCloud backup.

Don't worry! Everything should be back to normal if you follow these steps.

Can you clarify your problem? Are you having trouble restoring your new iPhone from a previous phone's backup? Or are you having trouble logging into iMessage?

No. When you restored the backup of the old computer it wiped out everything on the phone.

  • IChat & Restoring In-Progress Chat After Quit

    Hi
iChat used to have the ability where if I was in the middle of a chat and I accidentally quit, that chat would be restored when I re-opened it... very handy IMHO...
Sometime in the past this went away for me (SL, maybe? Not Sure)... last night I was messin' around and enabled 'In New Chat Windows, Show Last Chat'...
This seems to be very similar to what I used to see, except that now it literally restores the last chat - even one that I had previously closed...
Did Apple just change this OR is there another option somewhere?
    Thanks!
    -Justin

    Hi,
    Apple Changed it.
Saving Chats is needed to be on and it has the new sub option of displaying the Last Chat or a number of Last IMs
Note:- Cycling through these and then back to Last Chat will then display the Last IM Only.
Last Chat will open the last chats the Software can find with the Buddy you highlight in the Buddy List even if this is in a Group chat.
    (Similar for Last (x) IMs)
It does seem that if you Quit iChat with a chat open it sometimes (I Repeat - Sometimes) will seem to re-open the Chat that was open at the time iChat was Quit.
Mine appears to work like this but others report they cannot get their's to do this.
I would say that it does seem to depend a little on gaining some History to Saved Chats.
The other thing is I updated from Leopard to Snow Leopard so the .plist may hold the info that the "Remember Last Chat" is to be remembered is still in there.
Obviously if you can't remember who you were talking to last the Recent Items list will show you.

  • Old iMessages not showing on iPhone 6 after upgrade from iP5

    Hey guys,
I've picked up my iP6 today and I can't see any of the old iMessages I've had. They are still showing on my MBP but not on the new iPhone (MBP is still running Mavericks as I don't want to upgrade before I submit the project for work next week... just a precaution ). Any ideas?

I haven't done a recent backup - any chance I can get them synced via iCloud? I've assumed this would happen since it's being constantly synced with everything else I've got running on iOS

  • Lost content after a restore operation.

I received a message that a software update was available for 2nd gen Touch, but when I tried to execute the update, the thing froze and only a restore would work. The restore worked, however, the content is gone. I don't see a backup that will provide all of the music and apps previously loaded. Being new to the Touch, can anyone point me in the direction that will get all of the content back.
    thanks

Yes, all of the "stuff" is under C:\My documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music or C:\My documents\My Music\iTunes\Mobile Applications or C:\My documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Previous iTunes Libraries. Some of the music content synchronizes, but not all.
    Thanks.

  • When changing transferring to an existing iphone should i restore the phone before or after activating it

I'm giving my son my old iphone 5 should I restore the iphone before or after activating it to the new number.

    Hey Shells1,
Thanks for the question. The following resource outlines the sequence of steps you should take before giving away your iOS device:
Before you sell or give away your iOS device, make sure that you've removed all of your personal information. Follow these steps to protect your data and get your device to its factory default state for the new owner:
    1. Back up your device.
    2. Go to Settings > General > Reset, then tap Erase All Content and Settings.
              - This will completely erase your device and turn off iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, Game Center, and other services.
              - If you're using iOS 7 and have Find My iPhone turned on, your Apple ID and password will be required. After you provide your password, the device will be erased and removed from your account so that the next owner can activate it.
    3. Contact your carrier for guidance on transferring service to the new owner.
When the device is turned on for the first time by the new owner, Setup Assistant will guide them through the setup process.
Important: Do not manually delete contacts, calendars, reminders, documents, photo streams, or any other iCloud data while signed in to your iCloud account, or the content will also be deleted from the iCloud servers and all of your iCloud devices.

  • Approach to restore CMS DB and Filestore after upgrade

    Hi,
I'm looking for the best possible approach to restore the FileStore and CMS DB after upgrade.
We are on BO XI 3.1 SP2. And we are applying SP6 on top of it.
The current approach decided is - Completely Uninstall BO > Install SP6 Full Build > Restore old FileStore and CMS DB. The CMS DB is SQL Server.
    My Questions are:
Keeping in mind backup of FileStore and CMS DB would be taken before the upgrade, can I completely uninstall BO and install SP6 Full Build with the default CMS Database SQL Anywhere, then later -
    a.       Replace the FileStore folder with the backed up FileStore?
    b.      Repoint the CMS to the old CMS DB?
I understand, I would need to recreate the SIA to create the server entries. Having done all the above, would ALL the Users, Reports, Universes etc be restored with this approach?
Thank you so much for your attention.

    Hi Jawahar,
We faced a problem during our DEV Server upgrade to SP6 from SP2 to SP4 to SP6 with a manifest file which is why we had to uninstall BO (suggestion from SAP) and do a SP6 Full Build install.
So, to keep the UAT and PROD Servers in sync, we decided this approach.
The DEV Server upgrade was done by our previous Admin and there were no backups (FileStore/CMS DB/BIAR) maintained, so we lost everything and replicated the UAT Server contents. It took a lot of time.
Another reason I opt for SP6 Full Build for UAT is because of the issue reported in KB 1844998 - Tomcat 5.5 does not get upgraded to Tomcat 7 during SP6 update. And I'm not really confident with Silent Install.
    Let me know.
    Thanks again.

  • HT201269 When upgrading (4s to 5s), is there a way to save old iMessages?

I know old iMessages are normally deleted when you upgrade and iMessage is empty on the new phone, but is there a way to keep the old ones?

Messages are part of the backup, as long as you don't delete them from your device.
So, restoring the new device using the backup of the old one should bring your messages back again.
    Here’s what iCloud backs up:
Purchased history for music, movies, TV shows, apps, and booksYour iCloud backup includes information about the content you have purchased, but not the purchased content itself. When you restore from an iCloud backup, your purchased content is automatically downloaded from the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store. Automatic downloading is based on iTunes in the Cloud availability by country, and previous purchases may be unavailable if they have been refunded or are no longer available in the store.
Photos and videos in your Camera Roll
    Device settings
    App data
    Home screen and app organization
iMessage, text (SMS), and MMS messages
    Ringtones
    Visual Voicemail
Your iOS device backup only includes data and settings stored on your device. It doesn't include data already stored in iCloud, for example contacts, calendars, bookmarks, mail messages, notes, shared photo streams, My Photo Stream, and documents you save in iCloud using iOS apps and Mac apps.
