Restore option in time machine is so wierd

Hi
I am using the time machine for the backup of macbook air which having Lion Os. when Click on the time- machine given the very wierd options for the backup and restoration !!!!
why this option like that ??? have anybody have faced this issue ????

Describe the 'very wierd options' in full detail or better yet, provide a screen image.

a further question to restoring my hd from a previous backup on time machine...it says it will erase the hd. does it actually erase everything or does it just erase anything that may have been added or downloaded since that backup? this is confusing to me.
another problem which is part of the original problem is it seems that when i connect my iphone to my computer and iphoto uploads my pics...it doesn't just upload new ones, it duplicates and uploads every picture again...which is why i have 45,000 pics...they are 40,000 duplicates! what's up with that?
I have a macbook pro, and recently updated the os to Yosemite. the iphoto app is out of date, but i'll worry about that once i can figure out how to get all those pics off the desktop. also, i recently purchased and installed 8g of new ram, but that hasn't seemed to help.

the booting and walking away and then attempting to browse and clean method is what i've been trying to do. it won't let me drag and drop and just freezes up and goes to sleep after 2 minutes. it's a never ending battle with very few results. which is why i questioned the method of just restoring the hd from a time machine backup.
do you think restoring the hd from time machine will resolve the issue with all pics on the desktop? and everything will be as it was from the date i restore it from? sorry, as you can tell, i'm not overly computer savvy.
i have a really old desktop mac...i can try connecting the two...how does one boot a mac in 'target mode'?
as for the iphoto cleaning and organizing issue...that is what i was trying to accomplish with importing them to a folder. was going to browse and clean from there...but somehow imported to desktop which is what's complicating everything. once i get them off the desktop i can work on the iphoto issue...which as i mentioned...i didn't take 45,000 pics...i've just taken about 4,500 over the last few years, and they are being duplicated in iphoto. this was my attempt to clean it out entirely and start over. it will basically be a lot of deleting.
one problem, seems to lead me to more...which is just my luck. :-)

I am very disappointed with this iMac. It is only 18 months old and this will be the third visit to the workshop. I had expected more from Apple and from their repair agents. Luckily I have AppleCare.

I have replaced my old hard drive on a MacBook Pro midyear 2010 with a new SSD drive. I have a complete system backup of my old drive in an external hard drive using Time Machine.
Questions that I would like to get answered.
1) Can I connect my external hard drive to the macbook pro and use that to boot up my machine by pressing and holding down the Options key? Once booted up successfully, can I use Disk Utility to format the new SSD and then restore the complete time machine backup?
2) If that is not possible, can I use my old drive which I can connect using a USB adapter and use that to boot up by following the same strategy as listed in Step#1 above?
3) If neither options are possible, do I need to use a bootable USB drive for Mavericks OS X to boot up the machine,
I have Mavericks OS X ( 10.9.6) and I do not have a DVD of the OS.
Any help is appreciated.

Let me first document the steps that did not work and then I will document the steps that worked.
1) Replaced the hard drive with SSD.
2) Connected the original hard drive using a USB adapter to the MacBook to make it behave like an external device.
3) Powered on the machine and on hearing the chime pressed Command-R to start in recovery mode.
4) Chose the Disk Utility option to erase and format the SSD. The format chosen was Mac OS Extended Journaled.
5) Once the formatting was done, then clicked on the "Restore" tab in Disk Utility
6) In the Source field, dragged my original hard drive from the left pane and placed it in the field
7) On the destination field, choose the new SSD drive. Clicked on "Restore". Gave me a warning, accepted the warning and the restore was under way.
8) I had 236 GB to restore so took 3.5 hours before it was done.
9) Disconnected the external hard drive ( my original internal HDD), shut down the machine and powered on again.
10) Heard the chime and after that it was a white screen with no Apple logo.
Was visibly upset and started thinking what my next move will be. Then tried these steps
1) Again powered off the machine.
2) Connected my internal HDD once more as an external drive
3) Powered on and on hearing the chime, pressed Command-R as before
4) Once the OS X utilities screen popped up, this time chose Install OS X
5) Erased the contents of SSD once more and reformatted it using Mac OS Extended Journaled.
6) Installed OS X by following the prompts.
7) Once the OS was installed, I was presented with an option on how to transfer data to this new Mac
8) Chose the option to move the data from my original HDD.
9) Took another 3 hours to move the data.
10) Removed the original HDD once the transfer was complete, powered down the machine and started it once more.
11) Booted successfully and all my content is now accessible on the new SSD.
Moral of the story - It is the spirit that counts.

Can not restore from all Time Machine backup locations

I've just set up Time Machine in Mountain Lion to rotate backups between a Time Capsule (existing) and a Synology NAS (new).
When I select "Enter Time Machine" only the backups created on the NAS are shown.
How can I make Time Machine show restore points from both devices, or at least select a Time Machine location to restore from?
Backups are rotating and operating between the two without any issues.

You have to use the Browse Other Backup Disks option, per Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #17.

After Restoring your computer to Factory Settings How do you restore backups from Time Machine? Help!

I have Restored my Computer to Factory Settings and Now I'm trying to restore the backups from my Time Matchine. I've already done the Migration Assistant things. But I dont know where to find my details or where my files are.
Everything is in different spots then where it was when i started this process.

Restoring from Time Machine and using Migration Assistant are either/or options... either restore from a Time Machine backup or restore by using Migration Assitant. You don't write which version of OS X you're running, so it's kind of difficult to tell you where to begin (or start over).
If you're running Lion or Mountain Lion, I would boot into the Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys whilst booting) and use Disk Utility to erase your boot volume. Then, with your TM drive connected, restore your latest backup to your newly formatted volume. You can do the same by using the installation disc that has Snow Leopard on it, just with a few extra steps.

How to restore from playlists Time Machine?

I replaced my hard drive and restored everything from Time Machine and now all my playlists are gone. How can I get tham back. All the music appears to be there still.

The playlists are stored in both iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Library.xml files located in your iTunes folder. They should have been restored with the rest of the iTunes folder. Restore from your recent Time Machine backup just these 2 files inside your iTunes folder, then hold down option key while starting up iTunes and select the current iTunes folder that holds both library files. If this doesn't fix it and you don't have another recent backup of these files, you might be out of luck and have to re-create your playlists from scratch. See the following articles 1 and 2 on iTunes library files.

I'm installing a new hard drive and wanted to restore it from Time Machine. When I restart w/ "command" /"R" it returns to orig. startup disk.

I'm trying to load a new harddrive using timemachine when I restart the Macpro using "command"/ "R" keys it restarts to orig. startup disk and not to restore option.

If you installed a brand new hard disk, there is no recovery partition. OS X Internet Recovery should enable you to boot with ⌘ R but this does not work on all Macs, just ones with updated firmware that enables this function. Yours may predate that ability.

Some computers that did not ship with OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion installed may have a software update available that allows them to use Lion Internet Recovery.
Therefore, without a recovery partition, your 2008 MBP cannot boot OS X Internet Recovery.
Boot from your original system installation disc, then restore from your Time Machine backup. It will create the recovery partition on your new HD.
Time Machine backup volumes are also bootable, so you should be able to boot from the TM volume using Startup Manager. Connect the TM volume then an Option key while starting the MBP.

Twas quite a hassle if I am honest which was eventually resolved but I don't feel qualified to help anyone through the process as it required a trip to my local apple store and a genius bar appointment.
Personally, I would do anything like moving pictures out of folders etc. Certainly not creating a new users. i don't think that is an elegant solution
Try the following which MAY just about rescue the situation for you but if they don't work you may have to do something more drastic.
(1) Holding down Cmd & Alt at the same time, start iPhoto by clicking on the iPhoto icon. From the resulting menu choose Rebuild photo library by selecting all available options given to you and then pressing REBUILD!
If that doesn't work
(2) Fire up Utilities. Go to migration assistant. Chose 'From another Time machine back-up'. Open the 'Users' option that comes up next and from there select Pictures, then uncheck everything else like Applications etc (you don't want to do a full migration of everything) and click go.
If that doesn't work, take a deep breath and this step is rather complicated but it worked for me. First of all close iPhoto! Then go to new Finder window.
From the Finder window choose Pictures, then iPhoto library, press CMD and the letter i. It brings up a new window. Go to Sharing & permissions. From there select the padlock to unlock settings. and then select User account, then press the 'cog' icon next to +/- abd choose Apply to enclosed items.
This may take a while. Once completed, re-open iPhoto.
And that should (I stress should) cure it.

Restoring photos, using time machine

Yesterday I lost 1/3 of my photos in iPhoto. When I go back in time machine to an earlier day when they were all there, I can't locate the file. The 'images' in the sidebar is grayed out so I can't use that. I tried holding the option & command keys to get to the rebuild section but they warn to back up photos before using this step which I can't do. Any help would be appreciated. (I have iPhoto '9)

When you are in TM you have a finder window and you control the date with the arrows or the display on the right - the restore button is in the lower right hand corner of the screen
You go to the date you want and select the iPhoto library (by default in your pictures folder in your account) and click on restore
On the time machine screen I find 3 iPhoto library icons with titles like 'recovery', 'old', etc.
Do you have these in your finder window prior to entering TM?

It sounds as though it's not in iCloud anymore.
You may find that restoring from Time Machine results in the information simply disappearing again. You might try this: disable iCloud syncing, restore from Time Machine, re-enable syncing and choose the merge option when presented.

Restoring from a Time Machine Backup on a new Hard drive

Hi,
I have a late 2009 iMac and I had the HD replaced (it was included in the recent HD recall).
Before I had it replaced, I made a backup using my time capsule and it was on the latest version of Mountain Lion.
My question is, since I have to install the OS using the original install discs which was Snow Leopard, if I use the restore from Time Machine using Mac OSX Utilities, will my Mac restore my Mountain Lion backup (and have everything like it used to before I had the HD replaced)? Or do I have to reinstall Lion then Mountain Lion then restore from there?
It would be a pain to re download everything.
Hope someone can help me out.

You will find that Mountain Lion stores an invisible copy of the Recovery HD. You can boot from your Time Machine backup drive by restarting with OPTION boot:
Boot Using OPTION key:
1. Restart the computer.
2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "OPTION" key.
3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
4. Select the disk icon for your Time Machine backup drive.
5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
Your computer should boot into the Recovery HD. You will be presented with a main window of options. Select the option to restore from a Time Machine backup then click on the Continue button.

Restoring from a Time Machine backup manually ?

To make a long story short, I reorganized my disk space to create a Fusion drive from the initial hard disk drive and an added SSD one, confident in being able to restore everything from my Time Machine backups.
The creation of the Fusion drive went well but the restore from Time machine failed. This happenned probably (but I realized this too late) because the hard disk drive contained initially my own home directory and Time Machine had backuped 2 drives whereas I was asking it to restore on a "single" Fusion drive now.
So my question is simple : is there a way for me to recover the data (actually my own user directory, I reinstalled a clean system and all applications from scratch) that is available in my Time machine backups "by hand" ? And, if yes, how ?

If you can't restore from a Time Machine snapshot in Recovery, Setup Assistant, or Migration Assistant, then restore as much data as you can in the time-travel view.
Starting from a fresh installation of OS X, set up a new administrator account and log in. Enter Time Machine and press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible.* Select the one you want and navigate to your home folder (in the Users folder at the top level of the old startup volume.)
You should now be able to restore your user data. I suggest you do this in two stages. Quit all applications except the Finder before you begin.
Restore all the visible items at the top level of your home folder.
Hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the Finder menu bar. Enter Time Machine and restore all items in the Library folder. Log out and log back in as soon as the restore is complete.
Any other invisible folders or files at the top level of your home folder that you want to preserve will have to be restored separately. For most users, that isn't necessary.
Then either restore or reinstall all third-party applications, or restore them from another kind of backup, if you have one.
You'll have another problem if this is a new computer, or if you erased the startup volume: The next time you back up, Time Machine won't recognize any files as being the same as they were before, and will make a full copy of all files. There might not be enough space on one or more of your backup volumes for that. There are different ways of dealing with that situation, depending on your needs. The easiest way is to set your backup drives aside, if possible, until you're sure you'll no longer need the data on them, then erase them and start over. Meanwhile start a new backup on one or more empty storage devices. If that solution isn't workable for you, ask for instructions.
*If you don't see any snapshots in Time Machine, exit the time-travel view and then hold down the option key while selecting

My macbook pro OS crashed...the local apple store reinstalled OSx 10.6.8, told me to restore from my time machine backup drive. How do I get the backup to go? I've plugged the drive in, the machine finds it, but I see no place to click and start the restore...

To restore your backup:
1. Insert the Mac OS X disc and hold the C key while your Mac is starting.
2. Choose your language, go to Utilities menu (on the menu bar), choose the option to restore a backup and follow the steps.
Another way is to use Migration Assistant > http://pondini.org/OSX/Migrate.html It will create a new user with the transferred files
