Restore OS X Lion
After some error and not sure how it occured I needed to restore my system using my time capsule, BUT after 7 hours it stated that " an error had occured and halted" so I tried to re install the whole lot OS X Lion again but upon getting to the login section that did not recognise my apple ID, but it does when I go on itunes via my Ipad ? So a 2 hr 40 min call to Apple support and they are unable to assist me untill tuesday. So has anybody got any clue how to do it.
I am new to Apple so when my new system arrived I was buzzin but now I am beat, Please help
David,
You seemed to have created quite a mess. I'd recommend either waiting until Tuesday or if you have an Apple Store in your area to make an appointment and take it in today. There is a good chance they can probably help you navigate through.
As a new user there are some sites I'd recommend you bookmark and use. Also PLEASE do not treat your machine that like a MS Windows machine. What i mean is it's common to have to reinstall Windows to solve problems, with OS X that isn't necessary unless something terribly wrong has occurred. Please study the book marks while you're waiting.

Can SL restore from a Lion Time Machine backup?
I want to downgrade from Lion to SL. If I do a fresh install of SL will it be able to read my Lion Time Machine backup to restore my applications and data?
To clarify any perceived inconsistency between my advice and that of sig's, my presumption was that you were going to do a complete restore from Time Machine. If that's not the case, sig's advice is important.

Safari crashes when trying to restore windows after Lion update.
I just got the OS X 10.7 Lion update, which I must say, is awesome.
However, whenever I open Safari, it attempts to restore my previously opened windows, and freezes. After about 30 seconds, it closes and shows the crash report.
When I start it up again, it says that "Safari crashed while trying to restore your windows" (or something similar to that) and it gives me the option to start a new session (or attempt to open them again).
Is there any way to turn off this resume feature entirely? That would be the ideal solution.
Or, is anyone else having this problem?
Thanks =D

Trying to restore a Mountain Lion caldav.sql into a fresh/clean Mavericks installation
Call me cynical, but upgrades and Migration Assistant were never my thing. I'm starting to experiment with migrating some of my Mountain Lion OS X Servers to Mavericks.
Under OS X Server 2.2.x (Mountain Lion), I had a script that would individually backup the postgres_server databases, caldav, collab, device_management, etc.
I'm now working with a clean Mavericks installation and trying to restore the caldav db. Through the help of ~morgen, I've worked out that caldav seems to have its own postgres instance and I can see and view the fresh caldav database there:
/Applications/Server.app/Contents/ServerRoot/usr/bin/psql -U caldav -h /var/run/caldavd/ccs_postgres_3d403b3009fe0c830944d87bd751fbe9/ caldav
So, I backed that up before proceeding with:
/Applications/Server.app/Contents/ServerRoot/usr/bin/pg_dump -U caldav -h /var/run/caldavd/ccs_postgres_3d403b3009fe0c830944d87bd751fbe9/ -c caldav | gzip -c > /Library/Server/Backups/PostgreSQL/caldav.sql.gz
And then tried to use dropdb to drop it, so I could use createdb to re-create it and then use psql to suck in my Mountain Lion backup. The three intended commands in order would have been:
/Applications/Server.app/Contents/ServerRoot/usr/bin/dropdb -U caldav -h /var/run/caldavd/ccs_postgres_3d403b3009fe0c830944d87bd751fbe9/ caldav
/Applications/Server.app/Contents/ServerRoot/usr/bin/createdb -U caldav -h /var/run/caldavd/ccs_postgres_3d403b3009fe0c830944d87bd751fbe9/ caldav
/Applications/Server.app/Contents/ServerRoot/usr/bin/psql -U caldav -h /var/run/caldavd/ccs_postgres_3d403b3009fe0c830944d87bd751fbe9/ -d caldav < /Library/Server/Backups/PostgreSQL/caldav.sql
HOWEVER.... the first command failed:
dropdb: database removal failed: ERROR: database "caldav" is being accessed by other users
DETAIL: There is 1 other session using the database.

So, how can I gently get this mystical one user off of the DB in order to do this? OR, how can I start up calendar in such a way that this mythical user is not connected?
If I unload this job:
launchctl load /Applications/Server.app/Contents/ServerRoot/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.calendarserver.agent.plist
I can no longer access the postgres instance in order to drop and create the db.
Any other ideas / suggestions / solutions? If you knew your sql, I don't think it would be insurmountable to pull apart the full dump.
As to the upgrades in place, here's some of the output in caldav's error log every startup:

To be clear, I don't believe its Server.app. Each of these services stores its schema version IN the database and its checked every startup, and it would appear, that each service knows how to perform that upgrade at each startup. -
I wish to uninstall os x maverick how do I uninstall and restore os x lion?
After purchasing my mac air I purchased and downloaded os x lion. A few weeks ago apple offered a free download of os x mavericks which I downloaded, since downloading my mac has not functioned well and some programmes will not run atall, how can I uninstall mavericks and restore lion.
You can only downgrade OS X by first erasing the drive then installing the original version of OS X that came pre-installed when you purchased it. Or:
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.4 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo).
4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.4 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo). -
How to restore Macboo pro (Lion) defautl keyboard command settings?
Hi there,
I am not sure what happend, but all of the sudden my default keyboard commands are not following the "defaut settings" already in place on my mac...
Example, when I use the screen capture, (commnad+4) it kick me back to the previous page, and when i use the command+3, it kicks me forward.(to the page I was in the first palce.
I did check the settings such as untick the F1 thing, and I did select the options "restore default".. Could anyone help me please?
thank youJust do as sig says - hold down the Command and R keys while booting. This will take you to the Lion recovery disk (a small partition on your hard drive). You can erase your disk from here using Disk Utlity and restore Lion by using Internet recovery. Make sure that you have a good Internet connection because Internet recovery can take quite awhile.

I need to perform a complete restore of my IMac from a stand-alone HD Time Machine backup. The restore was to the internal HD in the IMac. The IMac is a new Intel i5 unit running Lion. The restore went fine except none of my picture files appeared. My external HD is partioned into a Time Machine Back Up and a Stoarge partion. All the TM back ups prior to the restore are gone and the external storage was wiped clean. 3000 photos from our African Safaris are gone. Any ideas on if they can be recovered from either the external storage drive or the internal HD?
Where did the older TM BUs go?
Thanks for any adviseHello:
I don't know what you did, but there must have been some option to clear the external HD. To my knowledge, restoring from a Time Machine backup will NOT clear the external HD.
Since I was not there, I really cannot speculate on what happened:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4927
In any event, there are third party tools that will attempt to recover data from erased drives (the erase normally deletes pointers, not the actual data).

Restore OSX Mountain Lion on Used Mac Mini
Hi all,
I just purchased a Mac Mini from someone on Craigslist. It's the late 2012 model (Core i7, OSX Mountain Lion)... The problem is, the person I bought it from upgraded it to OSX Mavericks. I use Pro Tools 10 which doesn't work on Mavericks. So I need to restore the Mac Mini back to Mountain Lion, which came on it originally.
Is there a way to do this? Or do I have to actually purchase Mountain Lion from Apple and wait several days for them to email me the download link? You need to do this:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer. -
Time machine won't restore back to lion
Mountain Lion is causing me big problems. My external firewire 800 hard drives will not stay mounted and my fans are running at full speed after waking from sleep. Restarting fixes these problems until it sleeps again. Sometimes it takes several restarts.
So I am trying to revert back to Lion the day before I foolishly upgraded to ML and Time Machine will not allow me to restore any of my old backup prior to ML. How can I get rid of ML without loosing data and taking up tons of my time?Time Machine will not allow you to go back to a previous OS version, unless you are running that version. So if you are running Mountain Lion, it will only restore to ML back ups.
Others have done what you want to, if you have a OS X LION install disc/usb. You will have to manually copy over data as you should always back up your system regardless.
Source; Derek Currie https://discussions.apple.com/message/19105493#19105493
"Time Machine does not provide bootable backups. Therefore, this is not the solution.
If you bought Lion, you should be able to re-download it from the Mac App Store. (Sadly, Apple pulled the ability to actually buy Lion off the store). You should be booted to another volume other than the one you will be installing to. You may have to disable the installation on the disk you wish to move back to Lion. I'm not certain, but suspect that trashing the ML System folder would do the job. The Installer will probably notice the missing OS and allow the Lion install. If not, then you'd have to go to the root directory of that volume, make invisible files visible and trash the 'Kernel' files and try again to install Lion.
Ideally you can use the Time Machine backup to restore just about everything else. But you may find everything works fine after the install.
I beta tested 10.8 Mountain Lion and know that it had a couple remaining bugs upon release. That's what updates are for. I expect there will be a rapid release of 10.8.1 update via the Mac App Store. It may well be worth hanging in there with 10.8. It is most definitely an IMPROVEMENT over Lion, whose Finder bugs I absolutely hate. (But that problem may soon be solved with the 10.7.5 update coming soon).
If you look around the net you'll find there are instructions for creating a bootable Lion installer DVD or USB thumb drive as long as you have the Lion Installer on a hard drive. Here are a couple with illustrations:

Restore leopard from lion backup
I want to return to Snow Leopard from Lion (love it) for personal reasons (family). Can I use the Lion backup to restore the Leopard preferences, etc? Or will I have to reconfigue the machine with mail, bookmarks, etc.
Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files. -
Restoring to Mountain Lion.
Hey guys!
I am using mac from the past one year but sadly, I am still a mac newbie So, I need your help.
I had Sleopard when I got my early 11 MBP and upgraded to Lion with the free up to date program. Since then my mac has been acting like an old Windows pc with impotent hardware, hanging every now and then, freezing, super slow.
So, Mountain Lion was a blessing! I did a clean install of it on my Startup drive using guides available.
I had prior to installing Mlion, made a new partion of my HDD (320GB) and used that to take a time machine backup of my drive. The backup is there, and I can access those files even now using finder.
Now, I want to restore my files (images, music etc) as well as some apps but nothing that will cause the old problems to come back. I can use Migration Assistant to restore the user files easily I know, but user account names are different so will it work fine and restore everything to its proper place?
Also, if I start time machine ie enable it, and select the same partition where my old backup is (of the lion install) what exactly will happen? will it overwrite that? create new folder or what..
How do I restore specific apps? I can copy paste from Finder, but is that the right way?
Those are few questions I'd be glad if I get some advice on. Basically it comes to restoring data from an old install in such a way which does not bring old problems back.
Thanks!!okay I got the thing about copying data fro finder. I am doing it slow and steady..
I also know using internal drive for TM is wrong, but currently have no other option.
OMG! I just realized I lost all the iLife apps! this did not happen when I "upgraded" to lion.
When I copied iphoto to apps and ran it, it gave me an error:
"iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem.
Check with the developer to make sure iPhoto works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the applicaton. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS X."
What should I do?
My question now remains is that, how can I start using Time Machine again? If I enable it from preferences what will it do? overwrite my old backup? Keep a new folder what?
One quick question:
opening anything in preview (if preview application is not currently running) takes a second and is noticeable. Is it working fine or IIRC in Sleopard it was INSTANT! -
Time Machine Restore failure after Lion upgrade
Hi all,
I recently (accidentally) reformatted my Mac's hardrive and then installed Lion. I can only recover the files from TM after the Lion install. I can 'see' other backups for a split moment in the time field, but can onlny restore from the last 2 backups that I can clearly see after the Lion install. I REALLY need to get my apps back! Can anyone out there heeeeeelp!!!?Are you using the "Star Wars" display? If so, that's probably not what you want to do.
Your best bet is to do a full system restore, per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. That will put everything back just the way it was; your version of OSX, your apps, user accounts, preferences, data, etc. -
Time Machine won't restore file in lion - don't have permission
I can't restore files in my document folder now that I upgraded to Lion. I get an error message to the effect you don't have write permission. I'm god **** admin for god sake.
Well I kept on tring to figure out what was going on and I got further.
The problem is on the TM side. The error is saying I (actually my wife because I was loged in in her accout) doesn't have permission to copy the file from the TM drive. When I did a Get Info she had RW and everyone had Read permissions.
The file is the data file for Quicken Essentials. Now this gets crazy to me. She's the one who does Quicken so it was created by her and placed in her Documents folder where TM backed it up. So if anyone should have access it should be her and she is and Admin.
I loged into my account and traversed the TM drive looking for the file. Once found I could drag n drop it to my desktop once I gave my Admin password. I tried doing the same on her account and I still got the same error message.
There are other files my wife can restore from TM just fine. This has got me very nervous about TM. If it can happen to my wife on some file I'm sure it's happening with me on other files that I just don't know about until the time comes. -
Restore data from Lion with Time Machine
Help needed!
I am going to buy a new iMac. Currently I am using Lion (10.7.5) and backing up with Time Machine. So the question is: Can I restore the data from the Time Machine to a new iMac with Mountain Lion or do I need to first upgrade Lion to Mountain Lion?
Thanks for helping me!You can restore this Lion Time Machine backup without any problem. During the first startup of the new iMac, it will ask you to restore the backup, so choose the option to restore from an external drive and follow the steps.
You will be able to choose what you want to restore, and as you have newer system apps versions than the ones that the backup has, they won't be replacing, keeping Mac OS X working correctly. Read > http://pondini.org/OSX/SetupLion.html -
Will a Mountain Lion Time Machine backup restore to a Lion MBP?
I have two computers:
(1) My iMac late 2009. This is upgradeable to Mountain Lion.
(2) My MBP late 2006. This is running Lion, but is not upgradeable to Mountain Lion.
If I upgrade my iMac to Lion and my iMac needs repair will I be able to restore from Time Machine to my older MBP?
Thanks,
dougYes, I would have the same problems with CCC - if I upgrade my iMac to Mountain Lion.
If I don't upgrade, then it works just great. I unmount the CCC clone from one computer, attach it to the other computer and do a reverse-incremental-backup to the other computer and - voila! - I have synchronized my two computers!
It's the only way I know of synchronizing two computers.
I've been doing this for several years now with no problems.
It probably only works because the OS is the same and the hardware on my late 2009 iMac and late 2006 MBP are sufficiently similar. Both use Core 2 Duo cpus.
But if I upgrade to Mountain Lion (or, upgrade my MBP to an i5 or i7 cpu) I will lose the ability to do this. So on travel, I would have no easy way of synchronizing apps and files.
Of course one easy solution is just "don't upgrade." It's not like anything is particularly broken now. But it's always fun to have the latest OS.
I'm just not sure of the best strategy for having everything I need for travel if I want to use the MBP. I guess I could always switch from this quick synchronization process to a tedious "all afternoon and evening" process of moving files and folders over.
The kinds of files I'm talking about are source files I'm working on, VMs - all the typical stuff people have. Photos. Whatever.
I know how to do it manually. It's just a time-consuming nuisance is all.
One thing I'm doing is moving away from "On My Mac" folders in Mail and doing everything in IMAP. That should help. I also have LogMeIn installed. So I could always get something if I forgot it. And I have more stuff in DropBox and Evernote. That also helps.
Thanks,
doug
