Restore OS X with Broken Display

Hello,
I have a cracked display, nothing is visible on my powerbook. i have been using an external monitor but now it will not recognize a signal from my powerbook. my hard drive recently crashed also, so i had to put in a new one. My question is how do i run the restore disk if i cannot see my monitor. i have been using an external monitor, but it is not receiving a signal when i turn on my powerbook, i pressed the mirror desktop button but no response. Any suggestions?

One option is to use your PowerBook in FireWire Target Disk Mode and install Mac OS X to your PowerBook from another computer.

  • Connect iPhone to iTunes with broken display screen

My iPhone has a broken display screen and I can't connect with my iTunes because it says I have to log into my phone.  I can't log into my phone because it is not working.  I tried pressing the home button and then acting out the motions of entering my password, but nothing is happening.  I have my replacement phone and I'm trying to reset my broken phone, but I can''t do that until I log into iTunes.  If someone can advise me on what to do, it will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.  By the way, I am doing this on a PC computer.

Try putting the phone in DFU mode and then doing the restore. This article should help.

  • Help with installing OSX Lion on iMac with broken display

    Hi,
Having some trouble installing OSX Lion on my 5 year old iMac which has a broken display.
The display has been dead for a couple of years now and I've been using an external monitor without any problems. Today I decided to upgrade to Lion - I downloaded the installer from the App Store and started the install which rebooted the machine. After reboot I'm presented with a grey 'thatched' background image on the external display and nothing else, no menu bar, installation menu etc.
I presume the internal display is showing the menu I need but I can't see it as that screen is broken. Is there a way to turn on mirroring during the install process so I can use my external display? I've tried various shortcuts held down during startup - OPTION-F14, CMD-F1, CMD-F2 - but none have worked.
If this isn't possible, is there a way to abort the Lion install process and go back to using my Snow Leopard install? Whenever I boot the machine I am taken to the OS X Lion installer and don't know how to get back to my Snow Leopard install. I tried holding down OPTION key on startup to choose the list of available OS installs, but again, the internal display is being used so I can't see what to do.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Genius idea, thank you. Was able to step through the install procedure using voiceover and the screenshots on this page http://www.macstories.net/mac/os-x-lion-installation-guide-boot-discs-and-qa/
Definitely a first for me, installing an OS with voice only

  • Hot To Get Data Off A G5 With Broken Display Card?

    Hi.
I have a G5 with a broken display card, the computer boots up ok. Is there a way I can get data out the G5 onto my powerbook using a firewire cable between the 2 computers? Unfortunately the file sharing is off on the G5. Any help would be fantastic thanks

    Hi Milton,
You can use FireWire Target Disk Mode to transfer the files to your Powerbook.
Instructions can be found here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583

  • Bring my MBP in for battery replacement comes back with broken display

So I took my late 2011 15" MBP in for a warranty covered battery replacement and when I returned to pick it up they told me that the display does not work. Never had an issue with the display and worked fine when I brought in an opened it up for them to inspect it cosmetically. They tell me it will be 500 dollars to repair this and theres nothing I can do about it. They offered to let me pay for half of the repair. But still, does this not seem right? You dont drive your car in for an oil change and come back to find 4 flat tires you are $500 on the hook for.

May be some sort of electronic short also took out the display along with the battery, if there was obvious physical damage they would have caught it at the get go.
If you don't have AppleCare, a 3 year old machine facing high repair costs, I would suggest you don't spend another dime on it and either buy a new one or a cheaper Windows laptop if your rough on hardware.
My Early 2011 is still like brand new, because I'm very careful with it.
This will assist in getting your data off the dead machine.
My computer is not working, is my personal data lost?

  • Installing OSX on 24" iMac with broken Display

    Hi,
I have a 24" iMac but the Screen is broken. It still worked with a external Display connected via MiniDVI but now i would like to install OSX 10.6. The problem is that I can't get the Installation to show on the external Display and I can't see what I'm (supposed to be) doing on the iMac's screen. With the DVD inserted it boots up like this (I can't even get the DVD out now):
Is there a working Shortcut (I tried cmd+F7 and cmd+F1) or other way to install without the main screen or is there at least a way to retrieve the DVD?

If you had another Mac you could do a remote install to the iMac 24".

  • How to download photos with broken display

I accidentally dropped my Lumia 820 and want to download my photos now. But the display is so broken that I cannot enter the PIN code and hence cannot connect the phone via USB to my laptop. Is there any way around entering the PIN? All my photos are still on the phone memory and I would hate to lose them!

Unfortunately not as wouldn't then be a security feature. For future reference consider use of SkyDrive to backup images to the "Cloud" as they are taken: http://www.windowsphone.com/en-gb/store/app/skydrive/ad543082-80ec-45bb-aa02-ffe7f4182ba8

  • Restoring disabled iPod with broken power button

My daughter forgot her passcode and I need to wipe/restore her disabled iPod. But the power button is broken. How do I do this?
    One suggestion:
I found some similar discussions where lllaass recommends using RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode. I downloaded RecBoot, but couldn't get it to work because "iTunesMobileDevice.DLL is missing". In fact, the instructions for RecBoot say "The program requires LibUSB utility whos setup is included in the zip package", only ... no such utility was included in the zip package. How do I get RecBoot to work?
    Any other suggestions?

  • How to use with broken display

I dropped my Powerbook G4 dvd. Two questions:
    1. How do I set it up for operation in clamshell mode with an external display, keyboard and mouse?
    2. How might I fix the internal display. I can see the windows and cursor working normally if I hold a flashlight to the screen. It seems that just the backlight is broken.
    Thanks much - John

    Operating with display closed
Is there any visible damage to the outside of the Powerbook, especially to the display bezel and/or the hinges? If not, then you may (if you're very lucky) just have a connection inside that got jarred loose. If you're not so lucky, you'll need a new display, new hinges, or you'll need to find a repair service that's willing to risk opening your display to replace the backlight — something Apple and most other technicians won't tackle, because of the great likelihood of causing permanent cosmetic or functional damage.
Remove your Powerbook's bottom panel and check all the connections to the logic board for tightness by disconnecting and reconnecting them. The inverter may be the chief suspect.
Instructions for most of the surgery (not including opening the display bezel) can be found here. You'll need to know exactly which Powerbook model you have in order to choose the right illustrated guide.

  • Help with broken display

My MacBook Pro screen has recently died. It is out of warrenty and without AppleCare. For the time being I have been using an external display with the hdmi out adapter.  This has been fine apart from some slight issue with resolution. In trying to fix the resolution issue I have un-ticked the mirror image option from the display options. Giving me a secondary desktop and a primary desktop. I am unable to change anything back or use any of my applications as I am unable to view any of the primary display. I can only view the secondary desktop on my external display with just a blank background. Is there anyway this can be resolved so I can use the external monitor as my primary desktop/display? I appreciate any response and apologise for any bad grammar as I am typing this on an old iPhone 3GS.
    Thank you.

I guess you could reset the PRAM.. then reboot.. once your computer senses the video cable it should display to the additional monitor.. I am not sure if the MacOS will sense the additional monitor as the "default" screen with the Finder menu bar or not..

  • Inexpensive ways to use working iPad mini 2 with broken display?

My iPad Mini 2 display is broken (both glass & display), making the screen unusable, but the iPad itself still works OK. I can't afford a replacement display for several months.  Are solutions available to allow at least limited access to the iPad & its apps. Preferred solution would involve use of another tablet I have to access the iPad, a la TeamViewer-type access.
