Restore photos from iOS 5.1.1 to current iOS6

I have an iOS 5.1.1 backup (encrypted and I know the password). This is from my iPhone 4. I currently have an iPhone 5 running the latest iOS 6 software. How can I get the photos from this old backup onto my iPhone 5?
Thank you in advance!

No there isn't, unless you still have the iPhone 4. As for restoring, doing a restore would not downgrade to iOS 5, only restore the data and settings. For more information see:

Says file format not recognized. I see how to do it one at a time with the "download" button in Dropbox but that's so cumbersome for lots of photos.

How do I restore photos from iPhone 5 to iPhoto. I erased all my events in iPhoto by mistake so need to sync them phone upstream to lions 10.7....not even apple support could help?? I plug my phone into iPhoto and it sees the camera roll but none of my event so I can move them back into iPhoto

Your photos are gone.  When you synch your phone with iPhoto, the actual picture file does not synch, rather is is a very small thumbnail file suitable for viewing on the phone, but of such small resolution that it's useless for anything other than viewing on the phone.  In any case, Apple makes no way for you to retrieve these thumbnail file.
If you deleted photos from iPhoto, your only hope is if you have Time Machine or another backup that might have had those photos.  Are they perhaps still in the "Trash" within the iPhoto app?

You might post this query on the iPhoto forum and perhaps someone there can provide an answer.
I tried this on my MBP and it seems that you have to restore the entire iPhoto Library.  What I did was put the current library in a separate folder on the desktop and then I restored the library from a prior date.  If you were to do that, you then could extract the desired photos and then delete the restored library.  Then place the current library back to the original location and import the desired photos.
Not tidy but it seems it will work.
    Ciao.

my phone was updated and  a google street view map was lost. How can i restore back from ios 6 to ios 5?

You cannot downgrade the iOS, there is no supported method.
Google streetview was not lost, Google Maps were removed from iOS6 and replaced with Apple Maps.

  • How do I restore photos from Photostream Album

Hi, I have my photostream turned on in settings and I had over 400 photos in my photostream album on my iphone 5. All photos along with the photostream tab suddenly disappeared 2 days ago from album in the photo setting. I backup my phone on icloud and cant find these photos neither can I determine how to restore the photostream tab. Despite all that I have done, I am only seeing the following albums, All Photos which don't contain the photos that I had in photo streams, Videos and Recently Deleted, which also don't contain the photos that I had in photo streams. I hope that the photos were not lost as I recently also upgraded to iOS 8.1.2.
Can someone explain to me how to restore these photo as well as the photostream tab since photostream was never turned off turned off and remains on. Do I have to reset the phone to an earlier back up?

I have followed your advice and I have restored the photo stream tab by disabling the iCloud photo library.
Is the restored album empty?  And none of the photos are in your "All Photos"? Are you conncted to Wi-Fi, signed in with the correct Apple ID? And the iPhone is charged? It may take a while, until the photos will download again from iCloud, if they are still in iCloud. However, photos older than a month may no longer be in iCloud.
My Photo Stream is not meant to store photos; you are supposed to download the photos to your Camera Roll during the month they are in iCloud.  And Photo Stream is not included in your iCloud backup, only your Camera Roll is included in the iCloud backup.
So you can neither retrieve older photo stream photos from iCloud nor from iCloud backups.
Have you saved your iPhone photos to a computer and could restore them from there?

  • Trying to restore photos from external drive and realized TimeMachine had been turned off.  Found in Imac backup folder in iPhoto library a modified folder with many of the missing pics.  Can I restore these?

I recently had a hard drive crash on my iMac.  After replacing the drive, I discovered that TimeMachine had apparently been turned off for six months, and all my photos from that period were missing after the restore.  In looking on the external drive used by TimeMachine, I discovered a folder called Imac backup, and under iPhoto Library was a folder called Originals and subfolders for each year.  To my surprise, there were photos covering the missing time period!  Somehow I imported the 2011 folder from the external drive into iPhoto, and then I discovered they were small files of less than 100 KB each, not the 1-2 MB original photos.  So now all of 2011 is screwed up, not just from May on.  These photos also include faces pulled from many larger group photos.
I can get Jan - April restored using TimeMachine.  But in continuing to explore the Imac backup folder, I found a similar folder in iPhoto Library called Modified.  This folder has many of the missing photos in their original MB size in folders indexed by date for the missing period after April.  Is there a way that I can get these modified photos back onto my new hard drive and into the iPhoto library without causing more damage?  If TimeMachine was turned off after April, how did those modified photos and all those small images from the missing period find their way to the external drive?
    Any wisdom greatly appreciated.

What you want to do is merge the two Libraries? The only way to do this is to use the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager
I created a new iPhoto Library on the iMac and dragged the entire iPhoto Library from the MacBook into that new Library. It worked, however it all came over into one big album and my previous album structure was gone
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.

  • I don't want to restore photos from icloud onto my new iphone

    Hi there,
I had an iPhone 4 and just got a new 5c. I backed up my 4 to icloud as i dont't own a laptop. I bought 20GB of storage and everything seemed to work. When I set up new iPhone i selected 'Restore from iCloud Back up' as I need old contacts on this new phone HOWEVER, I do not want all photos on new phone as I donot have enough space and they will fill up my memory. They are already in my iCloud  so I shouldn't need them on new phone. I didn't see any option to just restore data rather than media and so photo stream is downloading constantly but wont finish as there is not enough space on phone. How can I just restore contacts to new phone and not pictures? My other option could be to set up as new iphone, but if I do this can I then download the contacts from my icloud seperately?
    Going slowly insane.

You can't restore only part of the backup.  Only camera roll photos are stored in the backup and they will have to be restored as part of restoring the entire backup.  Photo stream photos are not stored in the backup; photo stream photos from the last 30 days will stream to your new phone when it signs into your iCloud account.  You can stop this by turning off my photo stream in Settings>iCloud>Photos.
The other thing you should be aware of is that you can't have photos in iCloud that are not also on your phone.  If you delete them from your phone, they will be deleted from iCloud.

  • Recovering photos from iOS back to Mac or windows

hi, my wife and I were recently burglarized and the robbers got both our macbook pros, which were not backed up
they they did not get our iPads or iPhones, however. i sync all my photos on my computer to both my iPad and iphone, is there a way I can get the photos off my iPad and back to a computer without having to select each one and email it or something tedious like that?

Be careful and do not sync the iPhone and iPad with iTunes, until you have downloaded the synced photos. Syncing again with a different computer will erase the photos. Also, do not enable iCloud Photo Library (Beta), if your devices have been upgraded to iOS 8, because enabling the  iCloud Photo Library (Beta) will immediately delete the synced photos.
is there a way I can get the photos off my iPad and back to a computer without having to select each one and email it or something tedious like that?
Apple recommends only the "Something tedious" (iTunes: Syncing photos - Apple Support) , so try the third party apps.
You can't reimport pictures synced from your computer to your device back to your computer. You can only import pictures in the Camera Roll or Saved Photos from your device to your computer. If you need to retrieve synced photos from your device:
Email them from the device to yourself.
Copy them from the emails to your computer.
On iPhone and iPod touch using iOS 5 and iOS 6, all synced photos will appear in a unified category called photo library.
You could also try to share the photos to a shared photo stream, if your iPhone and iPad support that.

  • Restoring photos from the preview in Lightroom 5

I recently deleted a few files in cleaning up my desktop, however, in doing so managed to delete a few folders that had some really important photos on them. In lightroom I still have the previews for them, but can't work out if/how I can restore the photos from the previews. I googled the problem, but only found a solution to the problem in Lightroom 4, as posted here-
    http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/extract-previews-lightroom-4.html
I would be extremely grateful if anyone could help, as I need these photos!
    Cheers,
    Rory

As Jim said, ideally it would be best if you can fish those files out of the trash/recycle.
Failing that, and failing recovery from backup and/or original card, then Adobe's Lr4 procedure will work in Lr5 too.
However, if you follow their procedure, recovered previews will be devoid of all metadata, and not have a proper ICC profile assigned (read: it's a 1/2 way solution).
    For a full-fledged solution, consider:
    * Rob Cole's Preview Exporter, or
    * Jeffrey Friedl's Preview Extractor

  • Add / Delete Photos from iOS device

Why won't iPhoto allow me to manage my iOS devices (iPad2, iPhone 4) like an external drive where I can Drag & Drop files into the deivce from my MacBook Air laptop - or, highlight a photo / video file on the iOS device in the iPhoto Browser and click "Delete"??!!
Currently I see that iPhoto will take images OFF the iOS device (placing them on my laptop using DROPBOX???????? Why?), but I cannot place an image ONTO the phone from my laptop with Drag & Drop, NOR can I highlight an image in the "Device" gallery from iPhoto and simply click "Delete".
    Should be simple enough.

    From the iPhoto help:
Sync photos and video clips using iTunes
Connect your iOS device to your computer.Note:  If Wi-Fi syncing is on in iTunes, you don’t need to connect the device to your computer, but they both need to be on the same Wi-Fi network, and the computer needs to be on. For more information on Wi-Fi syncing with iTunes, see your device’s user guide.
In iTunes, select your device (below Devices), and click Photos at the top of the window.
Select “Sync Photos from” and select the photos you want to sync to your device. On a Mac, selecting an album or event organizes the photos as an album or event in iPhoto. On a Windows computer, selecting a folder organizes the photos as an album in iPhoto.
If you want to sync video clips, select the “Include videos” checkbox.
    Click Apply, and click Sync.
When the sync is complete, click next to your device, and disconnect your device.

  • Updated to iOS 5.0 / restore Backup from iOS 4.3.3 not possible!!!

    Hi everybody!
On Saturday I changed my iPhone 4 on the new operating system iOS 5.0, here the steps as I proceeded:
    Usind iTunes 10.5.0.142
    1) I'm beginning to create a full backup (as the backup was still iOS 4.3.3).
    2) Then I wanted to select the previously downloaded "iPhone3, 1_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw" update file (Shift-click the Update button and choose file).
    3) In this process I was constantly getting back the error message "3002".
    4) In various forums I have read to update the iPhone via Restore and choosing the "iPhone3, 1_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw" file (Shift-clicking the Restore button and choosing file) and then restore the previously created backup (from iOS 4.3.3) so that messages etc. will be retained.
    5) The Update via Restore (Shift-clicking the Restore button and choosing file "iPhone3, 1_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw") works fine!
    6) However, it can't restore the created Backup (from the iOS 4.3.3) because "it's broken or not compatible"
    7) Downgrade to 4.3.3 iOS is no longer possible.
    Can someone please help me?
    I would be very grateful!
    Thanks in advance.
    Kind regards

I have been working on this for the last two days - and still no luck. Did a reset. Did a restore. Now I am doing "Set up as new phone." Not very hopeful, but will let you know.  Even called the Apple Store, and they were no help.  Does anyone have an answer?

  • Restoring photos from TM

Having trouble restoring iphotos from time machine. Cant see photos but have found some thing called package that has 5.3gb of data which should be all my photos. When I restore that from the TM the photos dont appear in the iphoto and that package seems to disappear. I made sure that the time machine does not perform any backups until this issue is resolved. Any clues?

    Hey Bob
Thanks for the info.Using iphoto  9.2.3 Unfortunately Pondini although thorough, has been unable to help. Not impressed with Time Machine at all. It just hasn't worked! Plenty of backups and appears to be all running well but have taken both imac and TM to authorised apple repairer and they haven't been able to restore. Appreciate they didn't charge for their time. Very jaded at the moment as I have been with Apple since 1989 my first being an LC111 at great expense, when included with Apple Laser Printer. A touch over 5k.Can't understand why I cant find itunes songs that have been purchased through the store and the store tells me I have purchased them but wants to charge me again to update my itunes file. Very dissappointed with TM overall as I purchased it after we got robbed and lost the computer last time.I know the stuff is on TM as the memory is nearly full (1TB) but I only have around 400gb of my own data. So something is there it is just hard to extract.   "Back in Time" software is proving a little more successful and have started to retrieve the photos. Thank God as my wife would have taken the one that the bank manager doesn't own. Overall, still persisting and looking forward to the new imac release soon

  • Restoring photos from holiday

I recently went on holiday and lost my iphone5. I now have a new iphone5 and the contacts I added to the phone which I lost on holiday are still in my contacts but none of the pictures I took are. Is there anyway I can retrieve them?

If they were in the camera roll when you backed up your old phone, restoring the backup to your new phone should recover them.  Also, if you were using photo stream on your old phone and your new phone is signed into the same iCloud account and has photo stream enabled, it would receive photo stream photos from the last 30 days.
