Restore Point?

I use a G5 and have Skype installed. Over the weekend we lost power and after re-start I noticed Skype did not re-start as usual and I was being asked to re-install. After I did all my bookmarked and recent chats were deleted.
I would like to restore my computer to an earlier date, but can find nothing in HELP to tell me if this is possible and how to do it.
Can anyone offer some advice?

Versions of Mac OS X prior to 10.5 don't provide that capability; unless you've been using a third-party backup product, or the Backup tool provided with MobileMe, or been making manual backups, you can't.

Iphone would not restore---- Error -50. I have tried to restore, and it restored it to the new point that it created after 5.0 was installed. How can I get it an older restore point from my backups and restore it on another computer? The phone has been wiped out. I can see earlier backups in my C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup folder. There are four subfolders in this address. I need my contacts, photos, and messages back. I know this is a common error but I can not figure it out. I have ran the other troublshoot items in the error steps for 13 and 14 like apple says. Is there a way to call apple and get a step by step of how to restore from another restore point? Does anybody have a solution????

It tells you to go to Error 13 and 14 if you receive error (-50).
Here is what I have tried...
Error 13 and 14: These errors are typically resolved by performing one or more of the steps listed below:
Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including trying a different USB port directly on the computer. See the advanced steps below for USB troubleshooting. I have moved it around to different ports.
Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer. Didn't change anything.
    Try a different USB 30-pin dock-connector cable.
Eliminate third-party security software conflicts. Removed all virus protection and firewall.
There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting one or more TcpWindowSize entries into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance. Or, follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to reset the packet size back to the default for Windows.Used the Microsoft fix it.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online. Doesn't matter.
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network. I do not know how to do this or how to find the correct/full/complete restore point. There should be more information for this.

  • How do I reset Mountain Lion to an earlier state? I'm looking for a PC-style restore point.

I upgraded my MacBook Pro to Mountain Lion about a week ago. Soon after, I noticed a problem with Zinio Reader (I could not view my magazines any longer). I found instructions on Zinio's Web site to remove the reader and Adobe Air, then re-download and install the reader. Things seemed to go smoothly for a short while, but then my MacBook slowed to a crawl. It takes about five minutes just to log into my machine. I'm getting a lot of the beach ball action. Every action—even resizing a window—has become an agonizing chore. So now I'm looking for a way to set my machine back to an earlier state—something like Windows restore points.

To answer your Carbonite vs Time Machine (you should probably ask this in a new thread .)
I prefer Time Machine because it backs my system preferences, user account (if you have more than one), apps, and files.  It's also fast to restore.  4 hours max from reinstall of my osx (from Leopard to Lion) to Time Machine Restore.
Carbonite just back up your files.
I tried the free version of Carbonite once (5 gigs of storage), and didn't like it.
I also know people have a hard time restoring from Carbonite because it is so slow.  You should probably test that out sometimes.
One last problem I have with Carbonite is that if you delete a file on your mac, it will be deteled on the Carbonite within 7 day (something like that).  With Time Machine, as long as the drive is big enough, the file will be there (until the drive is full, than the oldest Time Machine backup will be deleted).
The advantage of Carbonite is that the files are not in your house.

  • Problems with system restore points in Win 8.1 (keep increasing in size)

    Hi,
I was sent here by Microsoft Support who seem to have no idea of the mechanics of System Restore and what could interfere with it. I've no idea where to post this, so I hope you can help in that.
I have the problem that my System Restore point (only a single point) keeps increasing rapidly in size from a few Mb to many Gb and even fills the C drive if I don't stop it. Setting a limit to the size doesn't help (in System Restore or VSS), as it ignores
it and increases the limit. I have tried all the usual (sfc, DISM, chkdsk, several antivirus and malware programs) with no success.
Obviously, I can turn off System Restore, but that isn't really something I want to do.

When you say "system backup", do you mean generation of system restore points or an actual backup? i don't use MSBackup.
    Hi,
What I meant system backup is system backup feature that it would create restore point when you enable system backup automatically.
I made a test in our testing enviroment. limit restore point disk space usage to minize, create some restore point. When I create a seconde restore point, it would replace the former time point. The maxize disk space usage won't more than the limiation.
Therefore, please check the size of Restore Point in C:\System Volume Information if it's larger than system limiation.

  • Windows Backup fails to complete and System shows 29 Restore Points all titled "System Image restore point" but none will work.

Problems both seemed to appear about the same time and may be related.
Had backups on an  external drive prior to the problem and appeared to be working. I have since cleaned the external drive in an attempt to start a new backup series but it continues to stop and report backup has failed.
The System restore was working fine and one day it had changed all the existing Restore Points to "System Image restore point"
but still showed all the different dates.  In the System Properties window it indicates that there are 0 bytes in "current usages",
which I assume they are all empty but I can't create any new ones. I get Error code 0x80042308.
I have tried the Clean Boot with no results. I use MS Security Essentials for virus protection.
I have no other symptoms or problems on the PC.
About ready for a Recovery and start all over.

    Hi,
Your first step should be to run chkdsk /r /f on all the drives in that computer. Shadow copy errors are often caused by disk problems (usually minor) which chkdsk will find and correct.
Also, this issue can be caused that VSS dlls are corrupted.
Re-install the VSS dlls by following these steps:
    a. Using command prompt, CD to the WINDOWS\system32 directory
    b. Stop the Volume Shadow Copy service by executing the command "net stop vss"
    c. Register the following DLLs and services by executing these commands:
    regsvr32 ole32.dll
    regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
    Vssvc /Register
    regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
    regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll
    regsvr32 es.dll
    regsvr32 stdprov.dll
    regsvr32 vssui.dll
    regsvr32 msxml.dll
    regsvr32 msxml3.dll
    regsvr32 msxml4.dll
    Hope these could be helpful.

  • HT201269 I just traded my old phone for a new phone and I am trying to set it up.  I am attempting to back up my phone from the latest restore point and it will not allow me to do so.

I am unable to get the information from I cloud to my new device from the latest restore point.

If your old iPhone was more up-to-date it won't restore a newer version's backup.
Set up as a new device (Skip Apple ID Sign-in to save time) and update iOS, then do Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content & Settings to restart the iOS Setup Assistant and restore your iCloud Backup.
If it still won't work, contact AppleCare as there may be a problem with the iCloud Backup. They never charge for troubleshooting iCloud issues.

  • How to create restore point in windows server 2008 service pack1

hi i am bhaskar ... how to create restore point in windows server 2008 service pack1 and how to restore system from a restore point in windows server 2008 service pack1.. is this option available or not ? what is the difference between shadow copies and
restore point ? instead of restore point we have this shadow copies option in windows server 2008 ?Bhaskar

AFIK, Restore Points doesn’t exist in Windows 2008.
Volume Shadow Copy option can be used to achieve:
Creating consistent backups of open files and applications
Creating shadow copies for shared folders
Creating transportable shadow copies using a hardware provider — for backup, testing and data mining scenarios
Quickly recovering and restoring files and data
It is more like a file, data, application backup.

  • Restore point not shown in DBConsole

    Ciao all,
i have a test Oracle database (11.2.0.3.0 64bit) on Oracle Enterprise Linux 6
    I installed OEM DBConsole
I'm testing flashback and i noticed the problem.
in the page Manage Restore Points I always have No Rows Found while in RMAN:
    RMAN> list restore point all;
using target database control file instead of recovery catalog
SCN              RSP Time  Type       Time      Name
    62438606652                GUARANTEED 27-DEC-13 Begin_activity_dec27
    62440714714                           03-JAN-14 Reload_Starting_Point
    62442581664                GUARANTEED 08-JAN-14 test_oem
    62442584836                PRESERVED  08-JAN-14 BOH
I have this behavior creating restore point from the OEM and from RMAN.
    Any suggestion??

    Thanks.
I did just download and install the updates (DPP, EOS, Picture Style Editor and Zoom Browser).
Still no red focus point(s) shown with Back-button Focusing.
I searched on the web for this "symptom" and found, that I'm not alone.
It seems in Back-Button Focusing, the focus point won't be displayed unless you hold the back button down (* button  in my case) while pressing the shutter button.
I tried holding the * button while taking a shot and yes the red box shows up.
This seems like defeating the usefulness of back button focusing. (???).
What do I know? I'm just a newbie.

  • Visual Studio Update 2 hangs for 13 minutes on "Creating a system restore point..."

It appears that Visual Studio 2012 Update 2 hangs for a long period of time before it tries to create a system restore point.  Should I create a Microsoft Connect issue for this?
    Here is what I did:
I created a new Windows 8 x86 Virtual Machine using VirtualBox.  I installed Visual Studio 2012 and Update 1 because Update 2 was not yet out.  I came back 1 week later and tried to install Visual Studio Update 2.
When I ran the installer on the Virtual machine, it hung for seemingly 10 minutes at "Creating a system restore point..." I powered off the virtual machine and disabled system restore.  I then ran with the /layout option on the host machine
so I could pre-download the files.  Then I tried again.
Again, it hung.  This time I let it go.  It hung for exactly 13 minutes before it gave up and continued on to the install.  The log file says this:
    [0EBC:0F90][2013-04-18T12:39:36]: Apply begin
    [0EBC:0F90][2013-04-18T12:39:36]: MUX:  Apply Phase Begin

[01F4:0748][2013-04-18T12:52:34]: Creating a system restore point.
[01F4:0748][2013-04-18T12:52:34]: Could not create system restore point, error: 0x80070422. Continuing...
NOTE: Although it says "Creating a system restore point" at 12:52, it actually displayed the message on the screen at 12:39.  That indicates that it was really doing something else during those 13 minutes, not creating the restore point.
That is corroborated by the fact that it took a long time regardless of system restore being on or off.
If no one has any information or explanation, I will create an issue on Microsoft Connect.

I have the same issue. Visual Studio 2013 Professional update 2 was not installed from Web installer. Rather I downloaded a trial version and now want to uninstall it. However, I let the uninstaller try to create a Restore Point all night while I slept.
Next day, not done. So I clicked cancel, and it then commenced to create a restore point for the cancel. I did let the cancel run for awhile but I rebooted.
I then researched something on how to disable the restore point security on my drive, but that did not deter Visual Studio from trying to protect me and it TRIES to create a restore point before uninstalling. Just hangs forever. I don't need a restore point
for an eval copy of VS, thank you very much. Perhaps a simple dialog ("Do you want to create a restore point?") would be helpful?
Update: turning off Windows Defender fixed the problem.

  • Create guaranteed restore point in oracle 10g RAC ASM

    Hi DBAs,
In our production environment we have 2 node master RAC database (Oracle 10.2.0.5) (node1 name=master1 and node2 name=master2)
for which there is going to be a release tonight so want to create a guaranteed restore point for this RAC database.
I have googled many and found some ways, but before I implement it wanted a reviews from experts here.
Note: We already have db_recovery_file_dest set up in ASM...db_flashback_retention_target=1440 and db_recovery_file_dest_size=200GB with arch mode ON.
    The steps are
STOP the RAC Database on Both Nodes...
    Node1:
    $srvctl stop database -d
    $Srvctl stop database –d master1
    Node2:
    $srvctl stop database -d
    $Srvctl stop database –d master2
And now start one instance only in mount state:
    On node1:
    SQL> startup mount
    Now enable flashback on Node1...
    SQL> alter database flashback on;
    SQL> alter database open;
    SQL>CREATE RESTORE POINT before_upgrade GUARANTEE FLASHBACK DATABASE;
    Now start the second instance…
    $srvctl start instance -d -i
    $srvctl start instance –d master1 –d master2
Please let me know if there is something needs to be rectified.
    Regards,
    Ritz

    The steps look fine.
Presumably you've already checked to see if the database is in flashback mode and it isn't...hence you putting it into flashbac mode?
Probably just typos but it looks like you have interchanged database names and instance names in your commands....you have the following commands.  The srvctl commnds can be run from any node  (ie you do not have to run it on node1 to shutdown instance1 and node2 to shutdown instance2).
    Node1:    srvctl stop database –d master1
    Node2:    srvctl stop database –d master2
    You would run either:
Any node:    srvctl stop database -d master (assuming you database name is master...this will shut down both instances)
    OR shutdown each instance individually
Any node:    srvctl stop instance -d master -i master1
Any node:    srvctl stop instance -d master -i master2
Same commnds as above to start using "srvctl start"...the following start commands do not look right to me:
    srvctl start instance -d -i
    srvctl start instance –d master1 –d master2

  • Reset to previous RESTORE POINT only possible with FLASHBACK ?

Ok, I can create a Restore Point (in v10g) by a command like:
    CREATE RESTORE POINT foobar;
Actually I expected a symmetric command which reverts the whole database back
    with a command like
    RESET to RESTORE POINT foobar;
However I did not found such a (or similar) command.
Instead the only way I found was by a FLASHBACK command:
    FLASHBACK DATABASE TO RESTORE POINT foobar;
Is this correct? Is there no other command for reverting back to a previous RESTORE POINT?
    Peter

    HI
Well there is no such command "RESET to RESTORE POINT foobar".....its... "Flashback database to restore point"
now question is that why we use flashback database to restore point? for example we want to run some application on our database but we are not sure that it might create some unwanted changes in our database ...so we mount our database and enable flashback then we create restore point let say "create restore point beforeupgrade"....and then we run our application now if we find some unwanted changes in our database we will flashback database to created restore point.

  • Create a restore point fails with 0x81000101 error after replacing hard drives

I recent had a hard drive failure so, figuring that I may as well gain something for all of the work, I replaced both drives in my RAID 1 array (thereby doubling the drive space).  I then restored from back up and all has appeared well for several months
now.  Last week I started having trouble with RDC which led me to potential issues with my Intel RAID driver which finally led me to System Restore points.  It turns out that they haven't been working for some time now and I've been unable to get
them started using any of the advice in the other discussions on this particular topic.
All of the necessary services should be running.  I've also tried turning system protection off/on.
The new information that I provide is that when I first opened the System Protection tab, I found two entries for the C: drive.  The first had protection turned off.  The second, named OS, was listed as missing.  After a couple of attempts
with the configuration, I ended up with one entry for OS (C:) with protection On.  It still didn't work which led me to the forum and many failed attempts at getting this one feature working.
One of the other discussions mentioned the RestoreSystem log files.  They are, of course, binary files but I was able to see that I'm getting something called SxRegReadDWORD4FAILED6 fairly soon followed later by a FAILED CSpp::_CreateSnapshotSet.
I'm hoping that somebody with the right tool and knowledge to actually read those files can help me get restore points working again.

    Hi,
What is the full error messages? Like this?
The shared restore point operation failed with error (0x81000101) The creation of a shadow copy has timed out. Try this operation again.
If yes, then we might take a try with the method mentioned in the below blog:
