Restore "prepares" but never fully copies files

I've seen some similar problems to this, but I didn't think it would be appropriate to append this post to any existing threads. My apologies if I've missed something and am only adding to clutter.
Time Machine is not restoring files correctly. It won't refuse or give me any errors; it simply can't finish the job. This seems to be isolated to specific files, like the iTunes Music folder and its contents. I was able to restore some other files as a test to see if it affects the whole drive or not.
Upon upgrading to Snow Leopard I went ahead and reformatted my iMac's hard drive. Maybe it's superstitious of me, but it's something I've always done when changing or upgrading OSes. The Time Machine and Macintosh HD disks are both formatted the same way (MacOS Extended [Journaled]), and at least some files will restore properly.
However; when I attempt to restore any iTunes music folders or files, it will either copy nothing or an empty folder. I suppose relying on Time Machine is a sloppy way to back up my iTunes library, but it should work.
Is this a bug with a fix pending, or is there something I have to do to make these files recoverable?

I'd suggest doing a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions) on your TM drive via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
If the troubles persist, Let's take a look at your logs. There may be a clue in some of the messages. Use the Console app (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
When it starts, click +*Show Log List+* in the toolbar, then navigate in the sidebar that opens up to your system.log and select it. That will open your current log at the end (bottom). Scroll upwards to the date and time of the most recent of the problems.
Then see what follows that might indicate some sort of *error, failure, throttling respawn, termination, exit,* etc. (many of the messages there are info for developers, etc.). If in doubt, copy and post (a reasonable amount of) the log here.

IPAD restores applications but not data or files associated with applications

1) Today Itunes prompted me to update the OS on the IPAD.
2) It warned me to back up IPAD before I did. I did
3) I updated software.
4) It returned with an error saying it could not install software and I must restore to facotry settings
5) I resotored to factory settings
6) After that I attempted to restore contents of my IPAD from Itunes on my Windows 7 machine.
7) It restored only music but no applications and no other information
8) I spent all day on the phone with Apple Support who managed to get the applications restored by going through one by one and syncing.
9) It took a few hours
10) After I finished I noticed that files/documents associated with various applications like Kindle, Goodreader, Penultimate Notes were missing on the IPAD.
11) I have made a few phone calls to Apple and thy claim the following: "Apple is not responsible for restoring files or data associated with any applications, only the application itself. It is your responsibility to contact the application developer to get your files restored." This sounds patently absurd to me. I spent half an hour explaining the absurdity of this claim to the Apple representatives but they are firm and non-wavering in this opinion. One even claimed that restoring does not restore applications which of course is not correct.
12) I gave them the example of MS Word on MacBook Pro. If I save/back up on another machine and then restore back to the original machine I would expect to be able to see the Word files I had created and saved. That in particular the failure to view them would not be Microsoft's responsibility but Apple's. They disagreed saying it would be between me and Microsoft and the Apple devices had nothign to do with saving or successful restoring.
13) So I have lost all e-books purchased on Kindle, plus all documents saved on Goodreader application, notebooks on Penultimate applications, and my children’s drawings on their drawing applications. Apple Support say I should contact each application vendor to try and recover the missing data. They refuse to tell me how to get it from ITUNES backup stored on my Windows 7 machine as they say it will not be there.

Did you try restoring from a backup of the iPad? If you have a backup with all of your app data and files, that should restore all of that content to the device.
No - restoring does not restore applications. You have to either sync the applications back from iTunes on your computer, or you can download them again, BUT ... All of your data, files and device settings are stored in your backup. Do you have a backup in iTunes .... Edit>Preferences>Devices - that should show you all of your iDevice backups.

Each time I download the Adobe Reader I get to step 2 but never get to step 3.

I have been having a problem installing Adobe Reader, I never get to step 3 of the instillation. I also get a message that another Adobe is running. Each time I open a PDF file is shows download but never opens the file. I had HP Service working on it yesterday for more than 4 hours and they could not correct the problem. I have tried uninstalling the program and re-installing but I have no success. Please help me.

USB Flash Drive (with password protected Disk Image) copies files very slowly. Why?

I'm backing up some data onto a 32GB flash drive that I've put a password-protected Disk Image onto, and am copying this data into, but it is achingly slow. It's taking hours to copy just 500MB!
I have another 64MB flash drive that I have set up the same way, but this one copies files very quickly. I can't spot any difference between them in Disk Utility/System profiler.
For the record, the process I've used for bothe drives is reformatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then created a new Disk Image onto each drive (just a bitsmaller than the maximum size of the drive to enable it to fit) with 128--bit encryption.
Does anyone have any idea why the 32GB drive would perform any differently? I am using the same USB port on my iMac for each drive, but am getting very different copying speeds. It's driving me nuts! Many thanks.

The drive seems to be working fine if I copy files onto it outside of the Disk Image file (there's about 200MB of free space left over after I added the DMG). So I can only deduce from that that it is something specifically to do with the DMG itself. Though, as mentioned, I compared the DMG on my (fast) 64GB stick and the DMG on this problematic (slow) 32GB stick in Disk Utility/System Profiler (and I originally set them up in an identical way, as far as I am aware), and they seem to be the same. But one is performing achingly slow. Even dropping a file into the mounted DMG takes a few minutes to even think about it. It's very odd.

If done right and your itunes is configured as such, the phone will reload the drivers and start up itunes, and then prompt for a restore/update.

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

This was EXACTLY what I needed about the purchases I made from my device. However, is there a way to re-download other ones you've made from a computer? Because I realized some of them were not just purchased from my device.

‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

App Store says I downloaded an app but it never fully downloaded?

So I was downloading an app (keynote) but it never fully downloaded. Like it froze mid download. So I refreshed the iPad and when I checked, it was nowhere in my apps. So I went back to the App Store to re-download it, but when I found the app, the only option was to "open", as if I had the app on my iPad. So I clicked "open" but nothing happened, the iPad just froze and crashed. I keep trying and the same thing keeps happening. So then I went to settings and found the app there, but the logo is all weird. But there's nothing I can do about it there. So I went to Search iPad and typed "keynote", but nothing showed up, as if I didn't have the app. So, summarized, I want an app that I don't have, but I can't download it because Settings and App Store think I already have it.
What should I do?
(For what it's worth, this is all from a brand new iPad mini)

or you could try to hold your finger on top of the icon until it begin ti wiggle and have an X which if pressed will delete the app so you can redownload it as one can only buy an app 1 time all other attempters to rebuy it with the same appleid will result in a free redownload
