Restore published site to IWeb

I cannot seem to use Time Machine to restore my website to IWeb. One day the site disappeared and a very old version appeared instead. I have not published the newly appeared site.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. If you can't find the domain.sites file or have a backup copy of it that contains your current published site then you'll have to start over from scratch. However, Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing image, audio and/or video files in the published site in the reconstruction of the site.

  • Constant error message when trying to publish sites in iWeb 2.0.1

    Dear All,
I have a few sites in iWeb (mostly from iWeb 1) and after upgrading to iWeb 2, finding my old sites again and installing the update I decided to build a new site. On completion and trying to publish I get:
Publish Error: An unknown error occurred.
I've tried "publishing all" instead but no change. No problems with iDisk, Firewalls, .Mac etc, however it won't publish to a folder either so it must be the program. Any ideas? Apparently the 2.0.1 update was supposed to fix this, but obviously not.
    Alex

    Alex,
If it won't publish to a folder then there is an element/file in the site that iWeb 2.0.1 is choking on. Normally, even when iWeb produces a publish error during upload to .Mac, it will still write the html locally, to a folder.
Check to see if you have some unusual file extensions on pics or movies.
You can test the worthiness of your iWeb app by making a simple page with a blank Domain.sites file and seeing if you can publish it to a folder.

  • Restoring a site in iWeb after hard disk crash

Hi all - I've had great help in answering my questions in the past. Thanks in advance.
I used iWeb on a MacBook to create a site (www.thewarmfront.com) and the hard disk died on it. FYI - Applecare was fantastic. Quick turn - 1 day repair.
Anyway, I have the site on the server, and as a zip file that I e-mailed to the webmaster. Can I simply unzip the file, and will iWeb recognize all the elements as its own?
Or will the files need some manipulation to get iWeb working on that site on the Macbook?
    Thanks!

I'm guessing the domain.sites would have been on the MacBook HD, correct?
Let's approach this from a different angle. I have all the files that iWeb used to publish the site.
I don't mind recreating the site, but if I can import most of it back in that would save me a lot of time.
I have literally everything that iWeb uses to publish the site, all the files, .css, images, etc.
    Can I -
    a) edit a new domain.sites to recreate it?
    b) start a new 'The Warmfront' site on iWeb and import / cut paste the old files in?
    Thanks again...

  • Cant Publish site through IWEB 09 FTP server in my computer

Hi everyone, I have trouble publishing my site in FTP server in my computer. Each time I tried, its saying my password is not correct.I have Macbook pro 10.5.6 intel. I tried publishing my site through another computer and it did!. I dont know whats wrong with my computer. I have Protec Mac antivirus installed. do I have to remove it? I have tried to disable its scan and still not successful. I have my own domain and purchased a 3rd party hosting service.
    Help!

    OT,
thanks for the reply. yes I can publish it using local folder. But the web site address in browser is sooooo long and starts with file://user/admin/folder/name of my folder/name of my domain name/page name in my web site. Not a good business image and looks so unprofessional I have specifically purchased a domain name and I would prefer it would show up when a client type my web address.
What I dont understand is that It has published from my husbands computer. Isnt the reason why we buy software and install in our computer is for us to be able to use it whenever we want to? (of course with compliance to rules and regulations) I have Ilife 09 and cant use the IWEB. I know that something is causing this "behaviour" in my computer because I am able to upload my site from another computer. I have to borrow my husband's computer everytime I need to update my small business web site.
can anyone suggest something I can do to resolve this issue?
would really appreciate it a lot!
    thanks.

  • Cannot Publish Site on iWeb

I know others have addressed this issue but I am having multiple issues uploading to iWeb.
I am trying to publish an entire site, and I get random errors at random times. Some times the errors are "Check the internet connection", sometimes the errors are "The mobile me service is unavailable", sometimes it give me file blahblahblah.jpg cannot be accessed.
I have formatted and reinstalled OSX, and still no help. I have followed someone else suggestion on here to delete the preference files and still no luck.
Any help? I am about to dump mobile me for another hosting If this does not get fixed soonish.
    Thanks.

I would think that it is a MobileMe issue - there have been issues recently with MMe where Blog comments don't work and lots have been posted recently on this topic.
If I were you I would change to an external host - there is a lot more you can do and they tend to be more reliable.

  • Published site w/ iWeb but next time opening iWeb no content was there

I recently published updates to my site but the next time I opened iWeb there was no content & I was asked which templet I wanted to use - as if I was opening for the first time. Is there any way to reload the content into iWeb - if so how? Thanks in advance for any time & effort in helping me.
    Guy

Guy ~ Assuming you haven't inadvertently logged in to a different User Account, try this... Via Spotlight's magnifying glass icon at upper right of your screen, search for iWeb's Domain file(s) by entering this:
    .site
...and see what shows up in the drop-down list of hits. Note that any files which may be iWeb's Domain file won't be displayed as filename.site — rather they'll be displayed simply as filename, where filename could be anything you've perhaps renamed the original Domain file to be.

If you can't find it, be aware that only iWeb's Domain file can be opened in iWeb. See this Apple doc on How to back up MobileMe data. It says:
Any websites you have published with iWeb should still be available within iWeb. iWeb stores everything in a Domain file, normally located in the ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder (although it can be moved). If you no longer have this file, you can view your currently published pages and manually recreate them within iWeb, but there is no way to import published pages back into iWeb. You can manually back up the Domain file, or use Backup to back it up.
Paragraph 2.3 of this FAQ page gives some tips on how to use published files, graphics, photos, etc., to help rebuild the site from scratch:

  • Restoring .Mac site to iWeb

Hoping someone can help me. I have a website that I developed in iWeb and was hosted on my .Mac account. The hard drive on my Mac Mini died, and had to be replaced. Got the computer back, went and opened up iWeb, and my old website isn't loading up. Is there any way to get the site on .Mac back into iWeb? All of the data on my old HD was lost.
    Thanks for the help.

Unless you saved a copy of the Domain file from your old hard drive, no, there is no way to use iWeb to do anything with your old site.

  • Publishing site to iweb not displaying correctly

I recently updated a site and republished but some of the old stuff sticks around in Safari, (specifically an old text box). The new text box appears and its links work in Firefox? In addition, some of my text on other pages that is spaced correctly in iweb is off in both browsers. Anyone know what gives?

I have an iWeb site and I view it from a PC running Firefox. I have the same problem in Firefox of not seeing the current version of the site unless I clear my cache.
This is a stupid step to have to take EVERY TIME I update my site. Furthermore, how can I expect other people to clear their cache before visiting my site?
There must be a better way.

  • Restoring Lost Site Through iDisk

I just reformated my mac, so everything got erased. But my iDisk has my site still under iDisk -> Web -> Sites and then has my site. So how can I get my iWeb 09 to import the site from my iDisk to the actually iWeb so I can start editing it and etc..

No, because it is not part of your published site, rather it is an iWeb file and can be found under User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites.
Anything on your iDisk or under MobileMe is a published site that iWeb cannot open and it is the same if you publish to a folder, the site is published so iWeb cannot use it.
In this case, you will either have to locate your domain file or re-build your site.

  • Can't publish iCal in iWeb after updating.

I recently updated to the new iCal but now I am unable to publish my calendar to my web site through iWeb? Help me please.

If the files are in your sites folder, then iWeb will never be able to open them because they contain your published site.  iWeb has no import facility so is unable to open html pages - a previously published site.
You need the data storage file called domain.sites to be able to access your site again.  This can be found under User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites.  Find this file and double click it and iWeb will open it.
Note that you need to look in your User Library and not your System Library, as you won't find iWeb there.

  • How to restore uploaded iWeb sites as iWeb data on your computer.

My original internal HD died. Fortunately, I had data backed up with Time Machine. Unfortunately, I had turned off automatic backup because Time Machine was giving my computer problems and I'd forgotten to do a manual backup. So the last backup my Time Machine did was in 2008. In that time when I Time Machine was turned off, I had created a few sites on iWeb and uploaded to my Mobile Me account. I now have a new HD and restored all my data from my Time Machine backup but the most up to date are from 2008. I've lost the iWeb files created in 2009. Is it possible to restore my iWeb files to my computer from the files I uploaded to the Mobile Me server? If so, how would I do it? Hope there's a way. Thanks.

As you already found out you'll have to rebuild from scratch. However, Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing image, audio and/or video files in the published site in the reconstruction of the site.
Also it might be a good time to develop a backup strategy.

  • After I publish IWeb, unwanted hyperlinks show up in the published site.   How do I get rid of this worm?

I have noticed that no matter how hard I try to rid my published site of these hyperlinks (that I've never put in) certain words within the published site are highlighted and underlined and link to another source trying to sell something.  I've never put this in and think there is some kind of virus or worm on my Macbook Pro with Mountain Lion.  I've even deleted pages and started from scratch with a new page.  They are still showing up and multiplying.  HELP!  I'm on a Windows computer right now and don't know how to take a screen shot to show you how it works.  I hope my description is enough.

This has nothing to do with iWeb. These links are added on the server- probably due to the fact that you are using a "free" hosting service.
Contact your host to upgrade your account or choose another one with more appropriate facilities...

  • Can't Publish Site, Can't Access iWeb

I am so far beyond frustrated it's hard to think straight. I have been having nothing but problems with iWeb for weeks, and I can't find any answers or help. Ever since I got the notice that .Mac Homepage is going to be retired, I have been trying to update the 1400+ Homepage pages on my site to iWeb so I can make changes as needed to the pages in the future. I have a music review and interview site (I don't sell anything), and I need to update as many of these pages as I can before July 7. In the past two weeks, I've been able to update only a few pages because iWeb freezes, disappears, drops the updates, or the little ball just keeps turning. I have worked so hard to make MainlyPiano.com a top-notch site, and since I upgraded to iWeb '09, it has been nothing but heartache. Instead of writing new reviews, I'm spending all of my time trying to get this program to work for me again, and it just keeps doing everything except what I want it to do. Apple Support indicates that there is nothing wrong with the program. Why then are so many of us having so many problems getting it to work properly, and why does it work properly for a little while and then crash? iWeb was working fine on my iMac for a long time, and now I can't bring the site up on that computer at all!
I updated a couple of pages this evening, and they published in record time. I went to update another page and the program froze, so I quit iWeb. Then I couldn't get iWeb to open to the site, so I rebooted. The two pages I updated are now online, but I can't access them in the iWeb program. How can that be? This is like an ongoing nightmare and I don't know what to do to fix it. Can someone please give me an idea of where to go for some answers????
    Kathy

I know this, but I need access to most of my pages so I can update them as necessary. The biggest problem is that most of my updates either don't publish or iWeb freezes while I'm working with it or my new pages disappear like they did last night. They are online, but they aren't on the iWeb application so I can't access them. I just quit and reopened iWeb to see if they came up, but they did not. I saved them both before I published, so I don't understand this at all. I still can't get the site to come up at all in my iMac. My forehead is getting very bruised from banging my head against the wall!

how do i publish to a public site through iweb for free?

http://000webhost.com offers free web hosting, but, if no website is uploaded or it did not received more than 10 visitors in 30 days they will delete your account.

  • Published a site in iweb but looks different in the web browser

    Hi,
I have published a site in iWeb but it looks different when viewed in the web browser having published a few times.
The pictures have small frames around which display perfectly i niweb but do not show in browser?
The navigation menu is all showing in iweb but again not showing in the web browser?
Not sure what I am doing wrong? I have tried to publish a few times.. checked that all the tick boxes show 'display navigation menu' etc?

I noticed on the Pricing page that I cannot click the Gallery link. Something covering it?
    Other pages have similar behaviour.
And there's no link for the home page. Perhaps you're hiding it.
And see if you can use a shorter, and different, Sitename. It is clear who you are. And just welcome is enough.
    And empty the browser cache.
