Restore/recovery questions and concerns

Hi,
Just order a recovery disc for my Qosmio X505-Q850, I have been having numerous issues (blue screens, etc.) and have been putting it off way to long. I want to restore to original out of box settings so that I can start over. However, I have some concerns (which by the way have been current issues) with my SSD (64GB), which is my C drive. It seems to be full even with every attempt to have nearly all downloads sent directly to the larger E drive (320GB). I am at wits ends and have randomly deleted stuff in hopes to make space. I am now at the point where that is not helping anymore, and ready to pull my hair out, lol. That is why I finally ordered the recovery disc from Toshiba.
Currently I don't really download many programs, main use of my computer is to play World of Warcraft and use of Ventrilo client. I have Zone Alarm Suite (firewall, anti-virus) also on my computer. Pretty much just the basics. I would like to know what to do after I restore to factory settings once I receive the disc and how to safely remove excessive bloat and avoid the filling of the SSD drive. I think most of my windows updates have gone on that drive, is it possible to have it all go to the larger E drive, if so how is that done? I am not a tech wiz but some good step by step info would certainly assist me. Thanks in advance for any assistance I can get regarding this matter.

Here are some tips.
1. You can move all those special folders that contain pictures and so forth. See Ramesh's instructions (which are the same for Windows 7).
How to move the special folders in Windows Vista
Do Not Move Special Folders in Windows to the Root!
2. You should certainly relocate the temporary-files folder. Its contents grows without limit and needs to be emptied from time to time in any case. Take a look at it by entering %temp% in the Start/Search field.
Relocate that folder by changing the values of both the TMP and TEMP variables to point to a new folder as follows. Open System Properties (sysdm.cpl) and on the Advanced tab click the Environment Variables button. You should see both TMP and TEMP listed in the section labeled User variables for <account>. (Each login account is assigned its own temporary location.) In the Variable value Edit box you should specify a path to the directory that Windows and many other programs will use for temporary files. Do the same for both TMP and TEMP.
3. And you should consider relocating the paging file (pagefile.sys). Leave at least 2 MB on C so you can get a small memory dump for BSODs. This is the only change that might interfere with performance.
Optimize Virtual Memory in Windows 7 Manually
4. Finally you need to consider shadow storage, which occupies (eventually) 15% of the C drive. You can limit that. See the commands here.

  • Database restore/recovery questions...

HI I am somewhat new to the recovery process and I have just installed a new 2 node cluster on linux itanium and I have created a testdb in ASM. I have backup up the new testdb using rman with a full online backup and including control file. We are not using a recovery catalog and all of the rman backup data is only stored in the control file.
I was planning to use the drop database command to drop the datafiles and then resore the database so that I can test my restore/recovery procedure.
If i use the drop database command it will reove the control file and parameter file so I was wondering how I can get my database back if that is the case because all of the backup data is stored in the control file?
Can someone steer me in the right direction here? How can I recover if the control file is gone?

controlfile backup is crucial to be backed up for this scenario,if yours alls backup stuff exist while controlfile backup (repositry of yours database files as well backup stuff) gone then recovery would be more tricky and complex.

  • Windows on iMac, questions and concerns...

    Hello,
I bought an iMac and unfortunately some games I want to play are only developed for windows, under those circumstances I need to install windows vista on my iMac and have it run both operating systems. I'm concerned however because a few of my friends have had system problems when doing that and I cant afford losing all my work on my current Lion operating system...
So, in the end, my questions are: What will happen when I install both operating systems on the iMac? Do I need to be careful or pay attention to any particular step of the windows vista instalation? And, is it true that some iMacs suffer system damages when sharing operating systems?
My iMac configuration is: 2.5 GHz intel core i5, 4GB 1333 DDDR3m, AMD Radeon HD 512MB.
    Thanks in advance,
    Guedes.

  • Burg, Questions and concerns about it.

I've heard/read that it is outdated and unstable. How unstable is it? Is it worth building it and replacing it with Grub2, and does it build off of, or replace grub2? I really do like the graphical abilities of burg, and it far surpasses the themes of grub2. Any guide/information on it or a packagebuild to have it replace grub2 would be nice, as I was unable to find any relevant information for my situation pertaining to burg on both google and the wiki. Thanks in advance, Multimoon.

I recently tried grub2 as burg in the AUR has become unmaintained (though still usable) but immediately had to switch back as burg is so much nicer. Just follow the wiki entry, it's very similar to grub2 and you can have both installed at the same time. Obviously only one can be installed to the MBR. There's also a long burg thread on these forums.
It's installed on my SSD to a 1 MiB bios_grub partition (GPT, no separate /boot). I maintain /boot/burg/burg.cfg by hand. I have various entries for Arch, a SystemRescueCD ISO and WinXP (on the first partition of a rarely used drive). I've never had a stability issue.

  • My phone is stuck in recovery mode, and iTunes will only let me restore to factory settings.  My question: Can I restore from iTunes backup after restoring to factory settings?

I attempted to update to iOS 8 and now my phone is stuck in recovery mode, and iTunes will only let me restore to factory settings.  My question: Can I restore from iTunes backup after restoring to factory settings?

    Hi, kformagg
I would say yes. I once had the same problem (iPhone 5, IOS 7) and first restored to factory settings and after that from iCloud backup.
    It worked very well.

I accidentally screwed up my apple id when trying to change my primary email address. Password recovery options and security questions arent working either to restore. Created a new appleid just to get into forums to ask a question but hesitate to sync itunes and iphone with it as i may lose all purchased music apps etc. can anyone help? i have received no email response frm apple support, it's been over 48 hours

I have the same problem - it is maddening. I rely on this iPad for work so this is not just an annoyance! The above solutions of changing the appleid on the device or on the website do not work.
The old email address no longer exists - I haven't used it in a year probably and I no longer have the account.  I logged into the appleid website and there is no trace of the old email address so there is nothing that can be deleted or changed there.  On the iPad there is no trace of the old email address so nothing can be deleted there either. I have updated the iPad software and the same problem comes right back.  Every 2 seconds I am asked to log in using the old non-existent email.  The device is currently useless.
The only recent change to anything was the addition of an Apple TV device, which was set up using the correct login and password.
Does anyone have any ideas? The iPad has been backed up to the iCloud so presumably it now won't recognize the current iCloud account? So restoring may notbe an option?

  • I tried to do the update on my ipad 2 and now it's telling me I have to connect to itunes which says it's in recovery mode and i need to restore it to facroty settings which will lose all my stuff?  Is this so? and if so, why did it do this?

Tried to update, screen said verifying update.  then said to plug into itunes.  itunes (on home PC) said ipad was in recovery mode and I need to restore to factory settings to move ahead, losing all my stuff.  Obviously traumatic. Do I do this?  why did this happen?

The best way to backup your iPad is the way that makes the most sense in your situation and the way that works best for you. There is no hard and fast answer.  But since you asked .....
I prefer using iTunes because I don't have to worry about having enough space available in iCloud. You are allotted 5GB of space with the free iCloud account, but that is really not that much storage space at all. You can purchase more space, but IMO, its crazy to pay for cloud storage if you have your own computer. On top of that, you have more control when you use your computer. You can backup the content on your computer in order to have backups of backups. You can't do that with iCloud. Another disadvantage to using iCloud is that you always need to be connected to WiFi in order to backup to iCloud. Not everybody always has access to WiFi every minute of every day.
Read this and see if it helps you make your decision. If you have more questions, post again and ask.

  • Rescue and Recovery 4 and X31 HPA Restore Your Backups

    Good morning!
Installed a new hard drive on my X31. I used a purchased set of official restore media to do a clean install of Windows XP with the HPA Predesktop Area in place.
Two weeks later all of my Windows and ThinkPad updates are complete and I am ready for a clean backup.
I installed Rescue and Recovery 4.23 and after a false start, I successfully made a backup to a USB Hard Drive that will boot into ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery. The Windows software seems to be fully functional.
On normal bootup, however, if I use F11 or the Access IBM button, I am taken to the original Predesktop HPA interface -- so the partition is really there. The Factory Restore appears to now be functioning if I ever wanted to use it.
My problem (or questions) relates to the "Restore Your Backups" icon. When I select it, I get the message: "IBM Rapid Restore PC is not installed. Press the enter key to reboot to Windows and install IBM Rapid Restore PC."
Therefore, that portion of the HPA is not accessible.
And, therefore, other than a factory restore, there is no way to run restore from the HPA.
    So, here are my questions:
    1. Is there anyway to put the Rescue and Recovery 4 predesktop area in this HPA?
    2. If so, would it wipe out the Factory Restore option?
    3. Should I have made at least one backup with "IBM Rapid Restore PC" before the "Rescue and Recovery 4" installer removed it?
    4. Is there any space on the HPA I can recover?
    5. Is there a tool or method to delete the "Restore Your Backups" icon if it is non-functional?
This may all seem not that important but I do care about this awesome X31 and I really would like to know how all of these competing technologies interface with each other.
    Thanks for any help.,
    Charlie

    > ... it does not support X30 or X31, this could be part of the problem.
It also says that it *** may *** work on other systems. My experience is that if the IBM/Lenovo software supports the X32 (and RNR4 does), then it will work just fine on the X31 (example: Access Connections; exceptions: drivers that are specific to the very few hardware differences like CDC daughter cards -- Bluetooth).
The existing version was uninstalled and it was "way older" than what is covered in those special instructions (thanks, I did check it out -- no directory or utility present).
This is probably the end point for me -- good advice: "If that does not work, and if R&R under Windows works, you might create Recovery media and then boot from that if you want to restore from backups."
So, here is one new idea and one new confusion:
The last "official" RNR that supports the X31 was version 3.1 but it contains this somewhat cryptic (to me) caveat:
    Consideration 12
computers that have a hidden protected area (HPA), also referred
to as PARTIES, and have the Rescue and Recovery program installed
will not be able to boot into either the PARTIES or Rescue and
Recovery workspace after recovering the original factory contents.
To enable the PARTIES area again, restore a backup using either the
Rescue and Recovery program in the Windows environment or by booting
from rescue media and then uninstall the Rescue and Recovery program.
My thought: Should I uninstall RNR4, install RNR3.1, and then upgrade to RNR4?
My confusion: There are apparently two types of predesktop areas: HPA and Type 12.
Do RNR3 and RNR4 only use Type 12? If so, can it coexist with the HPA, can it replace the HPA on its own, or do RNR3 and RNR4 not install the Type 12 space nor update the HPA if the installer finds an intact HPA?
To recap, what I have now is an HPA as it would have existed in 2004. I have a working RNR4 in Windows. The Access IBM button and F11 boot to the HPA. What I would like is an RNR4 predesktop area that can do a factory restore.
Any more help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Charlie

I forgot my password and am trying to reset my ipod, but it won't work.It says that my ipod is in recovery mode and that I must restore it. I click ok, and then click on restore and update. Then it says connecting ipod software update server and a screen pops up with ipod software update on the top and iOS 5.1. It lists a bunch of stuff this update contains and on the bottom it says next, which I click and nothing happens, it just goes back to the ipod restore page. Help, what am I doing wrong?

Update to the latest version of iTunes. Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard) users may need to download iTunes 10.6.3.
Third-party security software or router security settings can also cause this issue. To resolve this, followTroubleshooting security software issues.
Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to performunauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. Uninstall the unauthorized modification software from the computer.
Edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from your hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect. For steps to edit the Hosts file and allow iTunes to communicate with the update server, see iTunes: Troubleshooting iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you do not uninstall the unauthorized modification software prior to editing the hosts file, that software may automatically modify the hosts file again on restart.
Avoid using an older or modified .ipsw file. Try moving the current .ipsw file (see Advanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations), or try restoring in a new user to ensure that iTunes downloads a new .ipsw.

No, it does not.  It transfers purchases from the iDevice to the computer.  The computer must be authorized for the Apple ID that the content was acquired with.

  • Can't get iPhone 4s out of recovery mode and always get error 40 during restore

I tried updating to ios 6.1.2 and I left it for a while since I had to do some stuff. When I came back, my iPhone is in recovery mode and I can't get it to restore using itunes. I always get error 40. I tried restoring on a different pc but it's still a no go. Is it possible that this has something to do with the hardware? I've already looked up possible solutions but my iphone's still in recovery mode. I never had this phone opened nor did I attempt to jailbreak it or anything. I tried asking my carrier for assistance but they're charging me for repairs. The fee's pretty expensive.
