Restore Shrunk The Disc

Hi all
Well resrtore didin't actually. I've blundered but can't remember how I fixed this last time and can't find any notes.
I've created a disc image and used netrestore to write the image over a machine.
However the result on the target is a 7 gig drive that is full instead of a 60 gig drive with 7 gigs of data. I know last time it was something simple.
Can someone quickly point me to where I went wrong and how to fix it ?
Thank you
Kind Regards
Eric

Hi William
Resolved.
The issue wasn't with the image but with the retore process. Two possible contributors which I didn't have time separate being initialising the drive before restoring and the initialise check bosxin netrestore.
Clue was that we had zeroed out the drive to effect a repair. My previous net restore exercises were with formatted drives. It occurred to me that the zeroed drive hadn't been initalised and didn't know it was 60 gig and simply produced a partition the size of the image.
On running the restore after initialising the drive I also realised we used the intialise checkbox in netrestore.
Turned this off and the image restored correctly.
Kind Regards
Eric

I can't format the disc, and iTunes says I may have a corrupted iPod. The system has been restored. What do I do to get my disc space back? All the iPod is doing now is constantly syncing things. I have the latest version of iTunes. It is a 160 Gb system.

I also had about 80 gigs of space left when the iPod decided to fill up my music files, somehow.

Julz, keep the set of recovery disks for emergencies. Follow the instructions starting on page 62 of your User's Guide to run the Toshiba Recovery utility from its hard drive partition, and return your unit to its factory default out-of-the-box settings. Back up all your user files, music, etc, power off the unit, press and hold the '0' (zero) key while you power the laptop back on, keep holding the '0' key down until you see the Toshiba Recovery menu.
Please let us know what happens. Good luck.

  • T43: Recovery Discs are corrupt and Rescue and Recovery won't restore from the Hard Drive?

I recently created Recovery Discs in Windows XP, but when I insert Disc 2, it always says that it is the incorrect disc so I cannot continue the factory restore.
Now I'm trying to restore by booting into the Rescue and Recovery on my hard drive, but it cannot find the hidden factory partition on the hd. It also now says that the restore had a "convertion" error when it wouldn't recognize disc 2 and will not let me try to look at my hard drive to restore anymore. If I use the RR boot disc, it will let me try to restore, but it finds nothing restorable on the HD.
I did look at the hard drive and see 2 partitions with one being a IBM_SERVICE partition with 3.9GB total size and 2.9GB free space.
    Please help, thanks.

    Hi,
maybe somebody here could help me. i've totly lost the original partition of IBM on my T41 thinkpad. If somebody could advise me how do i get it back, i would appreciate it very much.
    Thanks,

  • Restore a Macbook Pro without the disc...

    Hello!
I have had some issues with my Macbook Pro latley, so I have been trying to completly reset my Mac to the factory-preferences, without succes. The disc that I need to do this has somehow vanished and can't find it anywhere.
So my question is if it is possible to completly reset the Mac without any these external appendage so I can have my Macbook Pro running smoothly again? I have updated to the very newest version of Mountain Lion and would like to maintain that even after the resortation.
    Thank you in advance!
    Hampus, from Sweden.

http://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro will take you to the proper forum and you could check in on Mountain Lion.
    Yes you can.
Depends on when and what your Mac shipped with whether it has network install.
You can also clone or install Mac OS to external and totally nuke and do clean install from there too.

  • Error:the ipod cannot be updated. the disc could not be read from or writte

May sound silly I am sorry, new to this. Just got an ipod shuffle and have gone through all troubleshooting suggestions ie: restore ipod, reinstall software etc. Am getting an error: "The ipod "administrator's ipod" cannot be updated. The disc could not be read from or written to". This occurs when I click and drag a playlist from the source section to my ipod in the source section. Getting a wee bit discouraged by reading all the problems associated with this ipod and am hoping for an easy fix to slide past further frustration. Please help. Thank you muchly.

Go to the iPod Shuffle Support Page, look around in there, and follow the troubleshooting steps in the article entitled "Can't be written to" or words to that effect.

  • Urgent help needed! How do I use Time Machine to restore my System disc?

I need urgent help. First I discovered that my Library folder was empty. When I tried to restore the library to an earlier version via Timemachine it would not let me because it said the system was in use. Trying to start-up from another system on another internal drive and using various disc repairs resulted in the whole volume to disappear.
Question is how do I get the earlier system from my Timemachine backup drive? I have another Mac where I can attach the TIme machine HD to. Can I restore it from there and then copy the files over to my corrupted disc? All my programs are on there as well, which would take me days to re-install and then there are the other bits, emails, photos etc. Can anyone help?

Thanks for your sympathy Pondini and the encouragement. You just reminded me that I will lose a whole working day restoring !!! Do you happen to know where the emails are kept on the system and the address book? I better nick those as well as my other life sustaining bits before its too late. I don't trust anything any more.
I don't know what you mean by "nick those." Time Machine will put everything back the way it was at the time of the backup (unless you'd excluded things).
Do you mean you want to restore things from the period after the backup you selected?
For Address Book or Apple Mail, start the application, then +Enter Time Machine,+ navigate to your latest backup, and you'll have a prompt to restore. For Mail, you can restore an entire mailbox. When you exit from TM, you'll see a new folder in your Mail sidebar with the restored items, so you can sift through them and move, delete, or leave them as you wish.
Other items, you'll have to locate and restore via the Finder > Time Machine.

  • Why did F4 beta uninstall itself after I put MacBook to sleep and had to be rebooted from the disc image?

I put my MacBook to sleep with Firefox 4 beta open and when I went to use it again it had vanished. My spotlight search yielded v. 3.6 and the v.4 beta installation file (.dmg). I opened v. 3.6 and declined to transfer v4 Add-ons . All tabs that were opened on v.4 beta opened on v. 3.6. I closed 3.6 and reinstalled v.4 beta from the disc image. I was warned to replace previous version (3.6) - which I did. V4 beta installed intact (bookmarks, add-ons, history etc.) but I lost my open tabs. My only concern is that I was required to replace v. 3.6 and don't want to risk losing bookmarks and history if v. 4 proves unstable. I am otherwise pleased with the new look and performance.

Yes, your iPhone has the classic signs of early onset Alzheimer's...
Assuming that nothing is pressing on the Home button when this occurs, try the basic steps as needed:
    1. Reset phone - press both home and sleep/wake buttons until the Apple logo appears.
    2. Restore phone in iTunes using a backup
    3. Restore in iTunes as new, without using a backup.
If #3 doesn't help, there is a hardware problem such as a defective home button, and you should make an appt. with an Apple Store Genius bar.

  • How to Install Windows 7 Without the Disc

    1a)  Here is very useful article from PCWorld.com. The article is entitled "How to Install Windows 7 Without the Disc" and means just what it says. The article also has links to Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder and legitimate Windows 7 ISOs from Digital River, a licensed distributor of Microsoft software. The article lists "Step 1" as;
"Find your Windows 7 product key: Typically this 25-character alphanumeric string is printed on a sticker affixed to your PC or on documentation included with your PC. Alternatively, you can use a keyfinder program such as Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder to pull your product key from the Registry. You need your product key to reinstall Windows."
1b)  Using a key finder, however, is only useful if the Windows 7 product key was printed on a sticker (Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity) affixed to your PC, on documentation included with your PC, or sent via email by Microsoft. Assuming your computer came from one of the big brand computer manufacturers... HP, Sony, Dell, Gateway, etc... as most do, it uses a generic "mass activation" OEM SLP key. Trying to use this key by itself isn't going to work. This OEM SLP key needs to be mated with an OEM SLP certificate and an appropriate OEM BIOS with a proper SLIC table.
1c)  Here is where ABR Beta With Windows 7 Support comes to the rescue. Follow the "How to use it" section of ABR for Windows Vista for information and instructions on how to use ABR. The steps listed for Vista apply to Windows 7 as well. Perform the "activation backup" to "backup" and save the OEM SLP key and OEM SLP certificate. Save the entire ABR folder to an external location for later use. This will allow you to pre-activate your "clean" Windows 7 install on the computer you pulled the key and certificate from.
1d)  Now install Windows 7 from your new "Windows 7" disc or USB stick, following all prompts as needed. Don't enter a Windows 7 product key if request. Also, don't allow Windows to try to auto-activate. Once Windows is fully installed, run ABR "activation restore" to "restore" the previously backed up product key and certificate to the new Windows 7 install. Verify that Windows is activated, repeat "activation restore" if needed.
    2)  Here is another useful article, this time from SevenForums.com. This arcticle is entitled "Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7" and provides detailed steps required to backup your computer, audit current hardware and software, locate software and drivers, install and activate Windows 7, and create a Windows 7 Backup Image of your fresh install.
    Good luck.
Links to additional Windows 7 SP1 "Editions" and "Languages" can be found HERE and HERE.
Link to "ei.cfg Removal Utility". The "ei.cfg Removal Utility" is a simple tool that will remove the ei.cfg  from any Windows ISO disc image, thereby converting the image into a "universal disc" that will prompt the user to select an edition during setup instead of being forced to use different discs for different versions of Windows 7.

    ervis,
Before formatting the hard drive you should have been able to use the HP Recovery Manager to create your recovery discs or perform a system recovery. This is provided the recovery partition wasn't already corrupt or damaged. If the "D:" HP Recovery partition is missing or damaged and you don't have a set of HP Recovery Discs, you will need to use the information in my previous post to get your computer up and running again.
    The information in the document referred you to applies to several different "types" of installations;
Using ABRbeta is only needed if you have an active OEM factory SLP (system locked preactivated) installation of Windows. You use ABR to pull the factory key and certificate off the computer, to reuse it on the same computer with a clean Windows install.
If you are just installing Windows and are going to use the Windows 7 product key on the COA on the side of your computer, all you need to do is download the same version of Windows that your key is for and burn the ISO. Now install Windows answering or following all prompts as needed (except do not enter the Windows product at this time... it will be entered later). Once Windows has completely installed, enter the key and activate it. Your Windows 7 OA key should work on a SP1 install without issue.
The only thing I see that could mess things up, is the language of the install. If you are still having trouble activating Windows, please reference the ISO you download and a post a photo of your Windows COA
with the key erased or Xed out.
    Please send KUDOs

I interrupted a software update and my macbook pro will not boot. I have tried to reboot using the startup disc, I have tried to verify the disc, and repair the disc. It tells me I need to erase and reformat the hard drive then reinstall the operating system. I do not have a back up of all my applications, my garageband music and other things. I also do not have time capsule set up on this machine, but I do have a 2 TB time capsule.
Is there anyway to back up this corrupted drive so I can restore my applications later?

There's an old saying.  If you don't have a backup disc, then there must be nothing important to backup.  That's just lesson #1.  Lesson #2 is to never interrupt a software update.  Not a good thing.
OK, I'm sure you know this.  It just upsets me to read your story, knowing you have a lot of important stuff on your hard drive, and didn't use time machine.
You're pretty much in a bad place.  My only hope for you is to boot to your Installation Disc, then using disk utility see if you can save the internal hard drive (by fixing what can be fixed).  You might be able to see your user folder and some of your apps.  I wouldn't even consider copying the library, because who knows what's been corrupted in there.
    Good luck.

  • I am trying to reinstall OS X Mavericks but the disc is locked.

I Am trying to reinstall os x mavericks after reading pressing alt on start up is the right thing to do. I have followed the instructions upto the point where it has asked me to select the disc. The disc is locked and only has 117mb left. Can someone advise me what to do To get everything working again?

Repartition and re-format the disk provided it has not failed. If you have a free external drive to use, then you can try cloning the drive to the external to save your data. Otherwise, it is lost:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
