Restore software cd question

can someone tell me when the restore software cd's would be used....r they used to restore the basic operating sys when a hard drive has been changed...or r they used when there is some type of operating sys already on the computer...
the reason for my question is that I replaced a hd and the manual stated that the cd's were used to restore the basic sys back onto the computer but when i tried to run them i had a problem and they couldnt be used....it seems i first had to re-install my panther install discs in order to have an operating sys in place...
confused because i thought that the restore cd's were for that purpose

Apple has implemented a number of different schemes over time. Some do a complete restore to factory conditions using bootable restore discs, others use a Mac OS X CD first, then use the restore discs to install OS 9 and iLife, among other things.
Which approach you can use depends on what discs you have available. The exact procedure and a sketch of what can be restored and how to do it can be determined by reading the article below, and taking the branch that applies to your exact situation:

  • Why doesnt HP state USB 3.0 should not be used when creating "Restore" software on a flash drive?

about 2 weeks ago I received my HP DV7TQE with Windows 7 64 Bit. First thing I did was create a "restore" backup media just in case for future use. I used a ScanDisk Cruzer 32GB Flash Drive (memory stick). The stick was in one of the USB 3.0 ports while I was creating my "restore" software. On Friday night I performed a test just to make sure my "restore" would work. Unfortunately it did not. I got "the boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessable" message. After some surfing on the Internet I found out that USB 3.0 should not be used to create a "restore" software. My question is why would HP leave this little detail out from the intructions provided on the laptop at the time I was creating this?

From what I have found out it is ok to make the media on a usb 3.0 port, you just cannot restore using a 3.0 port, it should work from a 2.0 port.

  • Erasing old backups using Thinadvantage backup and restore software

I want to erase 3 old backups on my external USB disk  using the Lenovo backup and restore software  (T500 with latest Lenovo toolbox and other software.)  Everytime I click on "delete" on the line of the backup it goes into "not responding" and forces me to exit the software using the task manager.   The software seems to be hung up, because when I want to disconnect the disk (safely remove hardware) I get a message that "the disk is in use by some software- shut down the software first".  OF course, nothing is running so I have to shut down the computer before disconnecting.   When I start up and reconnect the disk, I have problems disconnecting the disk, even if I haven't used it.
Is the problem with the disk or with the software?   Would formatting the disk clear up the problem?
    Thanks in advance,    Ben .

    Bent500, welcome to the forum,
could you try deleting the last backup made on it's own first and when it's finished the others.  Sounds a little crazy, but this works on most occasions.

  • TS1559 My Iphone 4S with the latest software, wifi setting is grayed out. Could not be resolved even after restore software in Itune.

My Iphone4S wifi setting was grayed off and could not set wifi on even after I have reset network setting and also restore software from Itune.

    Hi YKLeong,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you may have tried all the steps in the article below. If your wi-fi setting is still grayed out after trying the steps, the article suggests contacting Apple support for help with your iPhone hardware:
iOS: Wi-Fi settings grayed out or dim

Follow these steps to resolve the issue:
Verify that airplane mode is off by tapping Settings > Airplane Mode.
Reset the network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Note: This will reset all network settings, including Bluetooth pairing records, Wi-Fi passwords, VPN, and APN settings.
Ensure that your device is using the latest software. To do so, connect your device to your computer and check for updates in iTunes.
If your issue is still unresolved, perform a software restore in iTunes.

If you are still unable to turn Wi-Fi on, please contact Apple for support and service options.

how to restore my secret question?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You might try to see if you can change your security questions. Start here, change your country if necessary and go to manage your account > Password and Security.
I'm able to do this, others say they need to input answers to their current security questions in order to make changes, I'm inclined to think its worth a try, you don't have anything to lose.
If that doesn't help you might try contacting Apple through Express Lane (select your country, navigate to iCloud help and enter the serial number of one of your devices)

  • A 3rd Party system restore software story.

Hi all.  This will probably only apply to those of you on this forum that don't have a very strong knowledge base of Windows and how to correct major system issues, etc., like myself.  I had my first serious hard-drive crash yesterday.  I tried installing some older software on Vista, and upon reboot, I would only get blue-screened and then rebooted and then blue-screened, so on so forth.  I had purchased a copy of Acronis True Image 11 based on some internet reviews and had been backing up my system weekly.  Of course, I had not tried the software out, as I wasn't going to wipe my drive just for the fun of it, so when my system got messed over by me, myself and I, I definitely had a moment of panick as to wether or not the restore software would work.  I can honestly say it was a well spent 40 bucks.
The install CD from Acronis is also bootable, so once I figured out I was in over my head since Vista wouldn't even boot into safe mode, I tossed the cd in and waited for the worst.  It booted me right to the main software menu, which is very user friendly, and in about a minute and half I was on my way to re-imaging (if that is the correct term)  my hard-drive.
All in all, it took near 5 hours to complete as I selected every verification and fail-safe option the software had, but finally it spat out that the process was complete.  I threw up a quick prayer, and clicked OK to reboot the PC.  Everything booted right back up just fine.  No weird driver errors, or configuration issues.  Nothing but a functional OS, and functional everything-else software.
If anyone is thinking abotu buying backup software or can't make a decision, I would highly recommend Acronis.  It's very simple to use, and I can tell you it actually works flawlessly.
Hope this is a help for anyone who needs it.

    Thanks again Bear,
I have Roxio 5 so that would have been fun also... LOL.  Did you give a thought to the Windows Restore app also?  BTW for MP3s I think some of the cars see MP3 but depends on the bit rate that you burn them. Some can do the 128 others the full 320bit.  I use Cakewalk Pyro because if it's super ease and use. The Creative X-FI Pro does come with some nice software like the Pyro but is a bit complicated. Thanks again for the info.

  • IBook restore software

Need help finding the correct restore software for an early '04 iBook 1.07GHz pre-loaded w/ 10.3.3 new and slot-loading ComboDrive. I purchased it used w/out software. The following is available on eBay:
+You're looking at a set of Apple iBook G4 software install/restore DVDs. (Make sure your iBook is capable of reading DVDs before purchasing this!) Comes with Mac OSX Version 10.3 -Panther, OS 9.2 Classic Support, and all the original software that came with an iBook G4- Games, AppleWorks, iPhoto, iMovie, etc. Should come with iLife '04 or '05 as well (GarageBand, iMovie 4, iDVD 4, iTunes, etc.), Apple Hardware Test, etc. This is essential if you're re-selling or restoring your iBook! Should work with the earlier iBook G4s. This will include a User's Guide and possibly an Apple car sticker or two as well.+
Is this the correct restore software?

    Hey buzzworms,
Don't know what he deal is. They gave me no hassle. I just stated I bought the computer used without disks, and they said OK. Sorry you have had no luck, but I WOULD try again until they get it right. Seems 60 bucks is a little steep. Previous owner said they were included, but she took it to an Apple store and the wiped it out and restored it (why she couldn't do it is beyond me). They did not ship them with the laptop, though. Oh, well, $34.32 wasn't too bad. Good luck and don't give up...

  • How long does it takes for iTunes to restore software on a 5s?

How long does it takes for iTunes to restore software in a iPhone?

There are three major portions involved in a restore:
    1.  Downloading the latest copy of iOS to your Mac for installation on the iPhone.
    2.  Installing the software from your Mac onto the iPhone.
    3.  Restoring all the contents of your iPhone (except iOS, which was done in the above step).
Step 1 will depend on your Mac's download speed.  We are talking about downloading more than 1GB.
Step 2 should take about 10 minutes or less.
Step 3 will depend on how much personal stuff (e.g., apps, photos, music) you had on your iPhone.  It might take minutes, or an hour or more.
